The Bears Den - 5/19/09
....where if we want to crown Sir Jay, we'll crown his ass. But he is who we thought he was! And we got him on the hook!
In The Den
ChicagoBears.com
Jerry is confident in the young wide receivers, going so far as to say that the WR corps will not be the weak link of the team. I have two things to say to that: 1) Don't stop believin' and 2) What will be our weak link? FB? S?
Chicago Sun Times
Ron Turner believes that Jay Cutler will have the playbook down by OTA's.
Brad Biggs makes the case that giving Hanie and Basanez a chance to prove themselves makes more sense than going after another veteran QB.
Chicago Tribune
Dan Pompei has a good column about the Bears coaches ready to use Cutler to their full advantage.
Daily Herald
Jay Cutler has already achieved rock star status in Chicago, as evidenced at the Bears Expo.
ESPN Chicago
Jeff Dickerson answers some questions about Craig Steltz, Brian Urlacher, and more.
Dickerson also reports that Ron Rivera's defensive staff has a Chicago flavor to it.

Observations
Wide Receiver – I think the only possible move might be to acquire an Amani Toomer. A move that I would endorse.
Quarterback – I think it is inevitable that the Bears sign a veteran backup. And that would be the wise decision. Banking on Hanie or Baesanez to be a viable backup at this point isn’t wise.
Safety – I still think we will see the Bears make a late pickup of a veteran after players get cut during training camp.

I know that voice!!
I dunno if this topic has been discussed on a blog yet… but during a story on that network on michael vick I heard a confident and familiar voice talking about forgiving michael vick… alas it was Lovie Smith. Vick would start at WR for us right now and would be Cutler’s backup… Wildcat with Hester + Forte.

Regardless of the moral side to it,
Vick has got a ways to go before seeing the playing field in the NFL again. He was dangerous with the football, but who knows how well he runs routes, or even if he could catch the ball?
But, Lovie has said recently that we aren’t going to change the face of our offensive scheme… so I’d think that the wildcat would be out of the question.

welcome to the NFL in the 21st century
nothing should be out of the question.
not to mention Dan Pompei’s column about the Bears coaches ready to use Cutler to their full advantage + WCGs post about Culter allowing the Bears to open up the playbook + [the Bears ran a Wildcat formation at least once last year = Wildcat is in their playbook (called “Cajun” when Forte gets ht ball)] = there is very little validity to your above comment

The wildcat is dead
If you watched how the Patriots and the Ravens thrashed the Dolphins every time Miami tried to run it, you’d know there’s no way it will catch any defense off guard this season.

its not a matter of catching anybody offguard...
it is about matchups.

I'm going to draw this up
so once and for all the wildcat hype will be put to sleep.

No validity?
Lovie Smith said that the addition of Jay Cutler would not prompt a change in the offensive scheme. Ron Turner said that having Cutler would allow the Bears to tap into more plays in his playbook, but would not cause a schematic change in what we do.
We are a run-first offense, and that should be more effective with:
the upgraded OLine, the presense of Cutler being able to extend plays, and the RB tandem of Forte/Jones.
My comment was that I didn’t think we would be changing the offensive scheme, specifically into a wildcat offense, based on our coaches’ comments. You saying that my opinion isn’t valid because “Bears coaches ready to use Cutler to their full advantage” and "Culter allowing the Bears to open up the playbook " doesn’t make a lot of sense.

using the wildcat does not equate to a change in the offensive scheme
staying within the scheme and playbook they called Wildact plays… the notion of expanding the playbook makes Wildact a possible play to call every once in awhile considering they are expanding a playbook which already includes the wildcat/“Cajun”. hence everything you have said is baseless and caught up in the notion of a change in “scheme”.

used the wildcat once...
we also lined up in 3-4 variations on D… i guess we’re throwing cover 2 out the window also… every freakin’ playbook has a handfull of direct snap plays(yes…that’s what they’re called).
by windycity72 on May 19, 2009 11:24 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, good luck with that...
Can we kindly cease with discussion of “conceivable” options for the Bears. Plaxico Burress stood 0.0% chance of ever being an option for the Bears. Michael Vick actually stands less chance than even that.
by BLou on May 19, 2009 10:55 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
that is your opinion
as important as you think your opinion is, the purpose of my post was to share the opinion of the head coach of the Chicago Bears on the topic. BLou’s opinion < Lovie Smith’s actual endorsement of Vick

Good grief Charlie Brown.
Smith’s comment on Vick =/= Smith wanting Vick as a Bears WR to run the wildcat.

"Bears WR to run the Wildcat"
don’t try to muddy the discussion. i never said bring him in to run the wildcat… i said he would start at WR for us and would be the backup QB… mentioned the Wildcat as an afterthought, yet i think it is an intriguing afterthought considering we tried it last year with ORTON and now we have CUTLER.
by No It All on May 19, 2009 11:18 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not trying to muddy the discussion.
And it is a silly discussion, so I’ll bow out, with my final thoughts:
Vick at WR… can he catch the ball or run routes? We don’t know. (Not to mention he has been out of football for a long time, and has a long way to go before ever seeing the field again)
Wildcat offense… it’s just not who we are, and I don’t see us changing that anytime soon.

I'm not a coach, so if I'm explaining this wrong, feel free to call me out.
OK. this is the singlewing wildcat against a traditional 4-3 unit. Instead of the QB sliding to the receiver spot and the RB taking the snap, We’re just gonna imagine it’s a mobile QB taking the snap from the shotgun.
The Defense is playing strong right, meaning they’ve shifted their front seven (sometimes just the Linebackers) to the weakside, thus, making the WILL into the SAM and vice-versa.
Notice how the RE is circled in red. He’s gonna be the read. if the RE crashes to pursue the slot Receiver, the QB will keep the ball at the snap instead of handing it to the slot. The QB has options to run both edges, where he’d have to depend on the WRs and the FB/RB to get a good block on the LBs.
However, he has a third option which is squeezing through the 4 gap between the RG and RT neutralize the LBs because of the zone blocking scheme and the Tight End creating a wall by phasing out the left end. The slot receiver should take care of the Strong Safety. The Free safety should be out of range, thus making it impossible for him to stop a big gain or a score.
How the Defense will counter the Wildcat:
stopping the QB from even getting past the line of scrimmage all depends on the LBs reaction to the O-lines blocking.
The Best counter attack is for the linebackers to ignore assignments and focus on plugging whatever holes are generated. the LBs will wait till a hole(usually that 4 gap) forms, all three should spy on the QB, and anticipate where he’s going with the ball. this is the Formula The Pats and Ravens used against the Phins, and they totally shut down the Wildcat.
In closing, I used this post to respond to No It All and show him that the Wildcat is obsolete. But after watching highlights, Learning how it’s ran, and drawing it all out, I think it can still be effective On the NFL level. I still don’t want Vick on the Bears though.

Like the thought but I thought I would chime in....
No Team ever would Spy all three running backs as well as not have the slot receiver covered.
You also have to think of the Wildcat throwing the ball.
Also the LE would be the read not the right. Strong side is always the Key read.
When I played I was a triple threat.... Stumble.... Fumble.....Grumble....

thanks for the insight
I was sure that all three LBs can’t spy, but I thought It sounded cool. As far as the read goes, you’ve got a Y and Z receiver, and a runningback lined up on the weak side, which makes the defense shift into a RIP call, that would make the RE the read being the the left side is originally the strong side.

by ifuwannacrownem on May 19, 2009 6:55 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The read is the Player that you Key the play through....
The RE is Unblocked in your designation so is considered a non factor in the play.
the LE is the read because his first steps dictates what the blocking becomes. If he steps inside then the RT seals him inside and then the TE Blocks a LB creating the Hole outside and if he steps Outside then the TE logs him and the RT Steps upfield and creates a Hole inside.
When I played I was a triple threat.... Stumble.... Fumble.....Grumble....

by windycity72 on May 19, 2009 11:29 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
the RE would be the one to step
when he crashes hard to follow the slot receiver in motion. wouldn’t that make him the read.
Think With Your Dipstick Jimmy!

Kind of depends on the coach
and the direction the play is meant to take…. in some situations, you would be right…. but for most purposes the read would be the LE because the right side is the weak side and the sweep to the right is not the first, second or third option…
When I played I was a triple threat.... Stumble.... Fumble.....Grumble....
