Unofficial "Guess Which Rookies Stay" Game
I wanted to make an unofficial Guess Who Stays Game. Why? Because the draft is over and there is a loooong time until more meaningful begins.
I want us to make predictions about which draft picks and undrafted free agents make 53-man roster, which make the Practice Squad and which get shipped to the garbage pile. Obviously, we, most likely, won't know what the end result is until the end of the Pre-Season. However, we'll have idea along the way. I don't think we need to analyze who these guys will make the team over (i.e. does Knox make it over Davis, do they cut LaRocque or Roach for Freeman, etc.), unless, of course, you want to.
The winner gets a virtual high-five from me. (and a free Jay Cutler jersey from WCG and a choice of ChiFan13's collection of Brad Maynard's used game pants.)
I'll go first:
53-man
Jarron Gilbert
D.J. Moore
Jauquin Iglesias
Marcus Freeman
Will Ta'ufo'ou
Chase Patton
Johnny Knox
Henry Melton
I think Knox and Melton make it for special teams, and because they are too unique in their athletic abilities to last too long on the Practice Squad. I think Patton makes it over Basanez and Ta'ufo'ou over McKie.
Practice Squad
Mike Rivera
Lance Louis
Al Afalava
Agree or disagree? What do you think?

You should consider
Derek Pegues a FS who was ranked #7 at safety. Afalava was 23rd. The ranking was by Scout and he was called a true centerfielder.

I think the 6 picks who get in are:
Iglesias
Gilbert
Moore
Freeman
Melton (I think he’s a project but since JA likes him so much he’ll make the team)
Kinder
PS: Afalava, Knox, Louis (he’s too big a work in project)

I don't think you guys have to limit it to six. I think that was just Angelo's guess and posturing...

Yeah but
It’s what Biggs said in his first article and it seems like a decent guess, although I think that Knox or Kinder takes Davis’s spot, Freeman replaces LaRocque and Ervin Baldwin is out in place of Melton.

I understand that. I just don't think anyone knows for sure.
There’s no reason for the Bears to say, “We’re only taking 6 and that’s that.”

You're right
I think if these receivers have a good training camp and continue to excel, then we could carry 2 or 3 of them on the roster and drop Davis or Rideau.

I actually agree with your list save one: Chase Patton. Would it be smart to keep Patton over Basanez? Absolutely. But this is Lovie Smith and Jerry Angelo we’re talkin about.
I'M A MAN! I'M 22!
by ChiFan13 on May 2, 2009 9:00 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't understand why...
it would be smarter to pick Patton over Basanez. I say you let Patton ride it out on the practice squad for a few years to get some more practice. He has a lot of raw skills, like the huge arm, but absolutely no accuracy at all. Sound like someone familiar. Now I haven’t seen Patton play much, but I think I remember him being in at the end of this years Big 12 Championship game. And I remember him missing receivers by as much as 10 yards, and this is an Oklahoma defense that folded at the end of games and stopped trying, see the Texas A&M and Nebraska games. I know he was crowned the next Matt Cassell, but there was a reason he wasn’t drafted or even talked about anywhere except that article.

At the same time
Who is Basanez? I mean, I know who he is and all that. But it’s not like Basanez is some worldbeater by any stretch.
Also, remember that a lot of good NFL players have been undrafted. I understand your point, but it doesn’t encompass everyone.

Yeah, but there have also been shitty undrafted players...
and at least Basanez has some NFL experience, and was a lot more accomplished in college than Patton, I believe he was Big 10 Player of the Year once.

they will have one eventually. And I’m not worried who it is, because they will blow regardless.
so unless Tom Brady or Peyton Manning wouldn’t mind backing up Cutler, i don’t give a shit about our backup QB situation.

You're being
shortsighted, as are the Bears if they don’t get a decent backup. But sadly you are probably right, they will just get a warm body and hope that nothing happens to Cutler. They should be trying to get at least a journeyman veteran who could hold the fort like Fuller used to do for McMahon. Right now they got nuthin.

Why on earth would the Patriots have cared about their backup QB last year?
They had Brady, who cares what the backup QB is like…
Oh yeah, he got hurt and missed the season and still had a chance because they had a quality player at backup QB.
Why would they have cared about the backup QB when they had Drew Bledsoe, an excellent QB before that? Again, after he got knocked out for the year they were able to turn the ball over to Brady.
I don’t care if you have John Elway, Joe Montana, Steve Young or Warren Moon on your team, you are dead meat if your starting QB gets hurt and you have nobody to back him up with.

injuries happen, get over it. that’s why the depth chart is called the DEPTH chart. You all are dealing with what if’s. Of course we need a backup QB and we will have some before the season begins. I once heard John Madden say
that the best piece of advice Al Davis ever gave him was that “A team in the long-run is only going to be as good as their back-ups.”
With a new QB in Cutler, we are all really giddy about the short-term potential… but for those that are trying to look at the Bears building a solid foundation for the next 10+ years, we have to look at building the best 2nd and 3rd string we possibly can…

John Madden? Al Davis!? Are you mad?
that’s fine and dandy, but in past years, the only reason I had to worry about the backup QBs is knowing that eventually, they’d be the starting QBs.
Now that we have Cutler, I don’t care.

For what it's worth,
just because Madden and Davis have become more pop-culture/ media characters shouldn’t take away from their history of accomplishments and contributions.
And to say that because we have Cutler then our back-up doesn’t matter is a little dangerous in my opinion.

I think we'll be ok
Hanie looked good last year, albeit in the preseason.
Also, Carolina was looking to keep Basenez to be their back up to Delhome. Obviously he is good enough to back up Delhome, he should be alright to back up Cutler.
I also feel the reason they are keeping Hanie, is that his arm is strong and he is mobile. He is obviously not Cutler, but his game should translate well, without having to change the offense scheme completly, like we had to do with Grossman when Orten got injured.

I think Gilbert and Iglesias
are the only ones with a chance at starting. Oh, and hopefully Taufoou sends McKie packing.
Moore may end up at nickel, but not til later in the season maybe. I’d be a lot higher on him if he didn’t look like they found him on that “Little People Big World” show. If we’re not careful, Jim Hendry may sign him as a middle infielder.
Knox may end up on ST due to his speed. I just hope he doesn’t turn out to be another Airese Currie.
Melton, Freeman, and Louis spend their time making sure ice doesn’t form on the bench, at least for a year or two.
Afalava convinces people that he’s Polamalu’s little brother. Troy finds out and physically breaks him in half during the week 2 game, clearing a roster spot for someone good. And sober. Bears win anyways.
Kinder gets a pink slip, saving us from a season of commentator’s bad puns about him being a “Kinder, gentler player.”
Chase Patton becomes Cutler’s official insulin holder.
Mike Rivera and Eric Peterman make the practice squad. Peterman has decent speed and intelligence, but he played for NW which means he will suck out loud. We all pull for him regardless. This becomes known as Darnell Autry Syndrome.

Good point, but I don’t see him as a starter. I think Knox will not only make the team but will get a fair amount of playing time as the 4th WR probably. I would rather they take a chance on him (or Kinder for that matter) than keep a stiff like Davis for another year.

agreed...
although it is possible that hanie gets beat out..i doubt they release brett after just signing him this year.
also davis may get beat out…he drops the ball like its nobodies business which could allow kinder to move up..
i just hope hope hope hope that we keep Ta’ufo’ou and release mckie…he will be a rookie bad a and level some cheese packed tools, viqueens, and lionesses.

No, I don't...
These rooks will replace people currently on the roster… 2 FB’s yes, McKie aand Ta’(we had 2 FB’s on the roster last year), but Patton will replace the number 3 guy (or he would in MY world anyway), and the 3 rooks at WR will knock out some dead wood currently on the roster….
There’s no reason to keep guys that suck and have less of an opportunity to develop (the older guys).

so something like....
knock off Hanie since we just signed Brett Basanez
knock off Jason Davis
knock off Davis? or Brandon Rideau…we have a couple of guys on practice squad i am not too familiar with…but i am sure one could be knocked off for Kinder
Bring back our honey bears...sick and tired of hearing about the dallas cowboy cheerleaders and the bars they go work at when they quit. cold weather + cheerleaders in skimpy outfits = lots of fun

So just keep Basanez and hope that two QB's don't get hurt in the same year?

We did NOT have two FB on the roster last year, at least for most of it.
Jason Davis was only on practice squad until McKie hurt himself.
We do not usually keep two FB.
