Afternoon Notes: Buzz From Chicago
A few things to report this afternoon from Chicago:
Vaughn McClure reports that the secondary will be a key focus during OTAs.
As topdoggkyle mentioned, Corey Graham is working at Free Safety.
Luckie815 and Mule Train brought us info regarding Rod Hood visiting the Bears.
Our secondary remains one of the Bears weakest links, and it seems that our coaches and management are taking the time to evaluate some possibilities to either provide competition or depth to our game of musical chairs.

I am so confused
So now Graham and Bowman are converted to S. OK, so is the coaching staff hell bent on getting everyone to try every position? Or are they just trying to give Vasher every possible chance to win back his starting job? It seemed to me that his heaviest competition was going to be Graham. Now it’s either the tiny McBride or the rookie Moore? Vasher wins that.

I'm a little encouraged that they see the weakness.
Their action with the secondary obviously indicates they know its a problem. We know its a problem, and now we know that they know..etc.
This little tidbit from Biggs is a concern for me:
* Tommie Harris, Marcus Harrison, Desmond Clark, Joey LaRocque and Hunter Hillenmeyer are all sidelined.
So our new and improved defensive line has 2 main guys sitting out. What’s up with Tommie and Marcus?
can't find where that's from...
however, i find it interesting that if pisa is signed, he could instantly be plugged into first team D, giving him a HUGE advantage over roach and hillenmeyer… but i’d still like to find that article.
Also here
* Israel Idonije is going back to defensive end but with Tommie Harris (knee) and Marcus Harrison (knee) sidelined, he filled in at tackle. Expect Idonije to be able to rotate during the season also.

good lookin...
i actually read that article too!!! didn’t remember that, tho. and yes, i was REALLY trying not to believe you. i hope they’re just being overly precautious.
Get your A!! out there son!
When I played I was a triple threat.... Stumble.... Fumble.....Grumble....
"Marcus Harrison iz in ur Backfield sackin ur Quataback!"
haha, yeah
get well soon, so you can continue to dash our hopes.
Teams were saying knees of a 40 year old….and we still drafted him. He was and is the biggest tease ever. Healthy, he’s ridiculous. But he’s never healthy, which is a slightly less awesome form of ridiculous.

jay calling out riddeau over on the bears website… also, in the cbtv expo piece, watch how cutler has his hands on olsen… looks like he found his favorite target… those two seem like they’ve been friends since birth.
more on Cutler
this is from “BearsNFL” on twitter…
“Through the first 50 minutes of the Bears’ first OTA practice Wednesday, Cutler threw several dozen passes, and the football hit the ground just one time, when Rashied Davis dropped an accurate pass on an intermediate route. Toward the end of the first session, however, wide receivers were working one-on-one against cornerbacks, and Cutler was flawless.”
“His passes were different than backup quarterbacks Caleb Hanie and Brett Basanez, with all but the deep balls arriving on a line and in a hurry. The other noticeable aspect of Cutler’s passes is that the ball is fired nose down on many of the intermediate routes, which is possible only because of the velocity with which it is thrown.
The majority of Cutler’s reps were with Devin Hester and Earl Bennett at wide receiver, and for now those two are expected to be the Bears’ starters."

on another different note...
UFA Woodny Turenne is apparently making a bit of a name for himself right now… the kid looks solid at 6’, 183#, 4.4/40… sure he’s picking off our back ups but i don’t know??? our secondary is a three ring circus right now with all kind of different situations being presented. if he doesn’t make our roster, i hope he plays somewhere. would’ve put links to his college highlights but camera work was garbage, and he still managed to impress.
Likely bringing in Hood at CB, now that they moved Graham to S
So, it looks like Graham may stick at Safety. Gosh… you hope they can find one friggin guy who can play the damn position. Ugh.

From today's Bear official website
here is a somewhat disturbing stat:
Inside their opponents’ 20-yard line last season, Jay Cutler completed 39 of 84 passes for 273 yards with 17 touchdowns, four interceptions and a 74.1 passer rating, while Kyle Orton connected on 31 of 59 passes for 249 yards with 13 TDs, 1 interception and a 96.0 passer rating. As a team, the Bears scored 28 touchdowns on 50 red-zone possessions (56.0 percent), while the Broncos tallied 30 TDs on 55 red-zone possessions (54.5 percent).
Forced to pass
Versus the luxury of balance would be my guess (and in turn predictability). They had the same amount of rushing td’s, but I would like to see the amount run plays vs. the amount of pass plays for both teams in the red zone.
!
You're right
Denver was forced to pass more and Chicago had just as many rushing TDs simply because teams were stacking the box against Forte. With Cutler there look for the rushing numbers to improve for Forte this year.
We are who we think we are.
Eh...
All I know is: one guy is a 25 year old Pro-Bowl QB. The other guy might not even win the starting job.

From Fred Mitchell's article today Re: Cutler's passing strength
“I’ve never been around anything like that before,” added Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner.
When you recruit players like Tim Beutjer and Dustin Ward, that tends to happen. How long before the Bears can finally be rid of this nitwit?

To Be Fair
There’s probably 25 Offensive Coordinators that have never been around anything like that before.
