NightLink: Salary Cap and Cutler's Extension

Yes, I realize that Cutler's giving the bedroom eyes to Allie and HoneyBear, but that's not the purpose of this post.

As we brought you on Sunday, the Bears have $20.8 million in salary cap space. Adewale Ogunleye's and Israel Idonije's contracts are up at the end of the 2009 season, but the elephant in the room is an extension for Jay Cutler.

I'll give my opinion on how Jerry should go about Cutler's extension and let you go at it: I want Jay to get a full year in a Bears jersey before Jerry extends him. Why? If I'm Jerry, I want to see how Jay performs both on the field and in the locker room when this honeymoon period is over. Tough times show true character; anyone can be a patron saint in a time of peace.

If we look forward after the 2009 season, I could see both Ogunleye and Idonije getting new (albeit smaller for Wale) contracts. Jerry would have an opportunity to see how Jay does before he tosses money at the man.

What do you think? Would you rather Jerry extends Cutler now or would you like to see how Cutler does before he gets an extension?

Exactly!
He just found his locker.
We paid a kings randsome in Draft Picks, and shipped off “Neckbeard”.
His turn to show his worth now. Lot of time for extension talk later!

Agree!

Bears’ fans are hoping for the best, but Cutler has to prove his worth in 2009. Anything less than the NFC North crown will be unacceptable.

I’m all for annointing him KIng of Chi-town too, but after he completes a season or ‘gasp’ a regular season snap under center in a Bears Uni.

Might cost more later

ReSigning him now won’t hurt, it would probly save the bears some money. If he does have an awsome year(like we all know he will) it gonna cost a lot more. Well worth it though. Either way I hope he’s the next great thing.

LET's GO BEAR's

Doubt it

Quarterbacks aren’t like other positions, where a guy gets locked into a deal and has to really fight to get it modified. QBs that are worth more than their current salary usually get paid, when they want it. If we extend Cutler on a slightly less salary than an awesome QB makes, and then he has an awesome year or two, he will ask for more money and we will give it to him. He won’t be locked into the deal we negotiate now, at all.

If anything, it will cost us more money, because it might boost his salary now.

yah but...

even cutler is not looking for a deal right now.

I think thats the Bear's and Bus Cook's plan

Unless it's for the rookies or Pisa Tinoisamoa, Or a surprise WR cut,

contract negotioations should be dealt with next offseason.

No need

There’s still a feeling-out period, and he’s on his rookie deal for awhile still. Let’s see how this season goes and re-asses then.

by TCBullfrog on May 20, 2009 8:43 PM CDT reply actions

They may very well wait to redo Cutler's contract

but he is currently going to get a $12mil roster bonus in 2011. It might behoove the Bears to try and restructure it now than wait til later. Then again, with Bus Cook being the one to deal with, we are gonna pay out the rear end regardless.

Thx for posting the NL ChiFan… my computer is officially free of the swine flu now.

With if Cutler is not who Angelo thinks he is?

Cutler and Cook will probably seek $10 to 15 mil per season, over six to eight years. We’ve already bet the ranch. Let’s hold off for a couple years before we throw the McCaskey trust fund into this big bet.
The Bears’ QB chart is still in a long-term downtrend. Let’s wait until the fundamentals improve before
we give the keys to Cutler. We are still talking about the Bears and QBs afterall! Guilty until proven otherwise!

by rocko1 on May 20, 2009 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Hey, I won't argue with you

But I will say that there is a possibility that the Bears and Cook will be able to both give Cutler his money (whether it is now or later), and relieve the liability of the $12mil bonus at the same time.

Recent history has shown us that the Bears are willing to reward their own when they deserve it, so Cutler will undoubtedly get his at some point.

A good point

about the signing bonus!

by rocko1 on May 21, 2009 5:24 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree on Ogunleye and Cutler, but disagree on Idonije.

Sort of. I’d start negotiations, but I definitely wouldn’t do it all costs. He’s shown no signs of decline and is only 28. Extend him at FA market price.

I wouldn't mind seeing Idonije getting wrapped up this offseason

The reason: You remember John St. Clair’s negotiations this offseason? We could have re-signed a versatile band-aid for very cheap last offseason. We then played with a horrible OL – so much so that JSC looked pretty good by comparison. Then he gets signed to a ridiculous contract by a desperate team.

I’m worried that this could happen with Izzy too…

Prove you can win

then we’ll pay you the going rate Jay. Until then keep the wallet in the pocket Jerry.

How you doin', Jay??

Haha. JK. I’m definitely off the market. Although, those eyes are pretty charming… lol!

Give him at least 1 year

Probably 2, to get it done. We put the immediate future on hold with our picks, but in the longerish term the money that would be first round bonuses can go towards Cutler’s long term.

No extension yet

I would still like to see how he handles the pressure of a big city media circus if they have a few losses during the season. Although, he has handled himself very well so far.

by BearFan611 on May 21, 2009 4:50 PM CDT reply actions

about how he's handled himself, and the media.

i waited to see how he reacted when he first came to town, then again at the press conference, and again everytime he’s stepped in front of a mic. i give jay an A++++++++ on the way he’s handled himself so far. now only if the damn season would start already!!!!!!!!!!!! i’m bringing out the classic jerseys this year! payton, butkus, plank, sayers. they normally only come out on special occasions.

which btw,

anybody got any leads on a 75th ann’y jersey. mitchell and ness was a bust, and the only one i found on ebay was a XXXL. i’d love to somehow get a hold of a staley’s jersey too, but i think i’ll stick to the nearly impossible as opposed to the really impossible.
