What Will Keep the Bears From Going 12-4?

I have become the ever-optimist this offseason, largely because for the first time in many years the Bears have started taking a more pro-active approach to addressing areas of need.

It is not uncommon for me to talk-up the Bears 2009 outlook, boldly predicting a 12-4 record, and claiming the NFC North title as our own.  Many of you claim that my optimism is silly.

My mentality is this:

Last year, some of our biggest concerns were the QB position, our OLine, our lack of a pass rush, and the fact that we were running matt Forte into the ground.  Since then, we have acquired Jay Cutler, revamped our OL by bringing in Orlando Pace, Frank Omiyale, and Kevin Shaffer, while letting John St. Clair set his sails for Cleveland.  We also brought in pass-rushing specialist Rod Marinelli to help address the lack of production from our defensive front.  And Matt Forte will have a 100% healthy back-up in Kevin Jones.

As we stand right now, the two biggest concerns that I see are our wide receiver corp and our defensive backs.  But, I don't see those as being as big of a problem as many of you.

With a solid running game, a Pro Bowl QB, a dynamic TE tandem in Clark and Olsen, and Hester and Bennett having a season (or 2 for Hester) under their belts, I think the passing game will be fine.  Look for Iglesias to make an impact too.

As far as our defensive backs go, we should see a huge push from our defensive front, which will create more opportunities for our DBs to make plays.  Pressure will be off of Brian Urlacher to stay so close to the line, and he should be back to form as well.

The way I see it, our two biggest areas of concern will be offset directly by the surrounding cast, and I see no reason why we can't go 12-4.

What do you see as our biggest reason why we won't?

11-5

i think 11 wins is totally feasible… i’ve crunched the numbers so many times, and can’t come up with 12. i, personally am not sold on the whole “eadiest schedule” crap, as i see nothing easy about steelers, eagles, vikes, falcons, ravens, and cards(say what you want, the were in the SB). that’s almost half of our schedule… god, i wish i could find my one comment where i broke it down… maybe you should list the 12 teams that you’re expecting us to beat so all of us can spend the next week arguing over it!

by HanelucaTC on May 29, 2009 9:19 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hope it doesn't happen, but here are some possibilities.

1. Injuries – obviously, there’s some key pieces that make this team work and we couldn’t afford to lose.
2. Marinelli doesn’t get the line to put pressure on, and the secondary isn’t gifted enough to save us.
3. Cutler doesn’t make the jump – either he throws too many picks, gets discouraged with lack of open receivers, or takes too long to mesh in the new system.
4. GB and MN get a lot better (not counting on DET)

That said, I’d feel really good if we hit the playoffs at 10-6 on a winning streak and with no key injuries – we could do something then (when it really matters).

When I played I was a triple threat.... Stumble.... Fumble.....Grumble....

by scespy12 on May 28, 2009 8:55 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

not to be negative, but

realistically we have a lot of new moving pieces. Revamped OLine, new Dline coach, new wr’s, new QB, and new free safety. So while they are all good moves and upgrades I think it will take a little time to gel and we will probably have some growing pains along the way. I say 10-6 and gelling as we reach the playoffs. I think the O will be fine, but the Dline rush and the free safety play is going to decide if we go deep in the playoffs

by tfrabotta on May 28, 2009 9:23 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I could argue 4-12 but...

I see 11-5 maybe 10-6. I believe the running game is the key here. If K Jones has a breakout/comeback season, the Bears could be 13-3. My guess is somewhat more realistic, however. I see the defense leaving 1 winnable game on the field and the offense about the same as last year, maybe one better. Thus, 10-6 is most likely, but NFC north champs and divisional round loss in the playoffs; Giants or Eagles, perhaps.

by LostInSTL on May 28, 2009 9:57 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

11-5 and i'm sticking to it

I just think with Jay Cutler back there it is just going to open the field up for Matt Forte. People are concerned with him having a sophmore slump but i just don’t see it. Every facet of his game is totally balanced. From his blitz pickup, to his hands, to his route running, to his explosiveness in the hole. And like an earlier post said, with a healthy Kevin Jones for a change of pace back oh man…Forteezy is gonna run wild this year.

by Chitownproduct on May 28, 2009 10:23 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Here's some issues from most likely to lose some games to least

1)Tommie Harris and the D-line struggle. Without a healthy Tommie, the D-line is average at best, which means the defense will be average at best.
2)Secondary issues – I don’t trust Vasher at CB until he proves otherwise, especially with weak safeties
3) Injury to Matt Forte – without him, the offense will struggle, Cutler or no Cutler. The Bears’ don’t have good enough WRs to rely solely on the passing game.
4) Injury to Orlando Pace/Chris Williams struggles. If Kevin Shaffer is forced to step in, we’re in trouble
5) WR problems. The corps is thin as we all know, but if we lose a couple to injury, we’re absolutely screwed.
Basically, the common theme is injury. If we get a major injury at WR, RB, OT, DT, CB, or S, I don’t think we have the depth to go 12-4.

12-4 is possible if the defense returns to form...

We’ve got a lot of talent at the offensive skill positions, and we will score some points. Hester is set to have a break-out year with Cutler able to get him the ball down field. I’m still not sold on the pass rush, though – and we didn’t really address that this off-season. The play of the defensive line is gonna be the key to the season. If the d-line plays well, 12 wins is very realistic.

Playing devil's advocate...

We could’ve been 10-6 last season if not for the Tampa game and taking it a step further we could’ve been 11-5 if not for both the Tampa and Atlanta games! But 12-4 in 2009 sounds great!

Hmm...

1.Offensive Line play, which dictates the rest of the offense’s production.
2.Defensive Line play, which well you know what that dictates.
3.The early “off week” is usually not a good thing,or it might be,depending on the direction the season is going to that point.
4.I’m not worried so much about the WR play in the regular season,it’s the playoffs that I’d be concerned about.

Lot’s of variables that go into the season, which we all know about. But I think 10 plus wins is very realistic.

You're being very Un-Dude right now.

11-5, personally

is what I think we’ll end up with. I can see us realistically losing to the Steelers, the Cardinals, the Ravens — with a toss up on the other two bird games (Eagles/Falcons) and I also figure to split with the Vikings… so that’s 6 losses, but I figure them to pull off one of the three latter-mentioned games.

Getting defensive

I think the offense will score enough points this year to win 11 games, but the Bears will only go as far as their defensive line.

With this new Bears team, they are looking at a winning season

I’m thinking the Bears are going to have a 10-6 or 11-5 record tops this season. Jay Cutler is making a great effort this off season to really build relationships and become one of the guys while still displaying his leadership skills. Everyone one on the Bears roster was already excited for him to join the team and now they are finding their comfort level with him faster than anyone thought. This is key to have a successful pass offense. Now, outside of the receiving corp of TE’s and WR’s that I feel will prove themselves this season, you got to expect every opposing team’s pass rushing to be nails when they are playing Chicago cause you know they can’t afford to let Cutler pass all over them. This is where our new bolstered O line steps in and Matt Forte and Kevin Jones will take over from there. We have too many options to turn to with our offense now. Our defense has a credible history of pulling off some crazy turnovers and thats pretty much what lead us to the Super Bowl in the 06-07 season. Now it’s time for our offense to finally get on our defense’s level of play making and begin another Super Bowl. We are a full circle team now. We don’t exactly have any major holes to fill anymore. Watch for the Bears to be one of the big play making teams this season. I’m predicting that with our winning record will come with wins over Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Arizona and Philidelphia (all 4 of last year’s conference finalists) this season. The Bears are not f***king around anymore. This is it. Bear Down…

There's always some unexpected wins and losses

But fortunately I managed to travel to the future and nab an almanac with the regular and post season outcome.

CHI @ GB: Win
PIT @ CHI: Loss
CHI @ SEA: Win
DET @ CHI: Win
CHI @ ATL: Win
CHI @ CIN: Win
CLE @ CHI: Win
ARI @ CHI: Win
CHI @ SF: Loss <—-Obligatory “WTF?” game
PHI @ CHI: Win
CHI @ MIN: Win
STL @ CHI: Win
GB @ CHI: Win
CHI @BAL: Loss
MIN @ CHI: Loss
CHI @ DET: Win

Then we go on to meet (and defeat) the wildcard (and first round survivor) Vikes, then the edge past the Eagles to reach the superbowl, where the Patriots receive an ‘85-worthy repeat thrashing. Who’s with me??

That's the big

“?” of the off-season, I think… Not the WR, but the D-Line. I’m a firm believer that increased QB pressure is what is necessary to revert the D to its dominate status. I hope that Marinelli is that answer to that question.

by windycity72 on May 29, 2009 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wow...

trade Urlacher? to switch to the 3-4? do a lot of people really feel that Urlacher is pretty much done for? because that’s about the only reason I could ever come up with for getting rid of Urlacher. I don’t think we are in a good position to switch defenses. This is purely speculation, but I don’t think that many of our current players would fit into the 3-4 well. Not only that, but I feel that lining up in the 4-3 still allows you to be a dominate defense. I know I’m beating a dead horse here, but cover-2 isn’t designed to run without pressure on the quarterback. Plain and simple. Considering the potential of our D-line, and the amazing things that Marinelli did in Tampa (let’s all ignore the fact that he was HC of the 0-16 Lions, he’s a DLine coach here, and that’s what he was in Tampa) when Rice & Sapp played there, and ALSO the fact that Lovie is going back to the play-calling on D, everyone ought to see a HUGE difference in how our defense looks this year.

by ChiTown2ShineIn'09 on May 29, 2009 6:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

As of right now,

we are upside down, so to speak, with Urlacher’s value vs what we owe him. Hopefully, he is able to have an awesome 2009 season and will put to bed any thoughts about him being beyond his glory years.

Can we at least please...

How about using some of the fastest linebackers in the NFL to blitz every once in a while… works for the Eagles.

Do we also not have one of the fastest TE’s,,, there were at least 5 games Olsen didn’t get a catch. How are any of our less than spectacular WR’s going to get open if we don’t at least throw it to our TE’s. Could of had at least 6 more TD’s last year.

by ChiTown2ShineIn'09 on May 30, 2009 1:31 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You are absolutely correct

A lot of those blitzes were up the middle also. I think it’s all going to depend on how much push we get, so then maybe we can start sending DJ Moore in on some CB blitzes (don’t ask me why i have that visual in my head). This is why i will miss Mike Brown so much, when he came up to the line you knew someone was going to get hit, and hit hard. Hopefully with an upgraded Pass rush we can have more delayed Blitzes which didn’t seem to work at all last year and again, because our D-line had almost no push on their O-line. I think this year we will definetly see more pocket’s being collapsed and more QB’s starting to run for their li

DL play

will determine how successful they will be this season.

by lookingdeadred on May 30, 2009 9:58 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Just curious

What happened to the dline last year from your perspective? With Ogunleye, Brown, and Harris yours should be one of the better ones in the NFL. I was really surprised to see them not perform to well last year.

by packallday555 on May 31, 2009 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

DL play

Ogun has lost a step, maybe two, and ABrown has been playing out of position at RE, which means Ogun and ABrown should be fighting for the LE job. But if no one emerges as a true RE, ABrown will be back out there.

Harris has not been healthy. His biggest asset is his quickness, and his knee problems have robbed him of that quickness. If Harris is back at 100%, he single-handedly can raise then play of the entire d-line to elite status, as he did early in his career, but that is a very big if.

Gilbert, the team’s first pick, has a huge opportunity to make an immediate impact. While he played DT last season, he is a natural DE and could be the RE they need.

DEFENSE.
We need to solidify our secondary, TACKLE, and worst of all, keep our Offense on the FIELD!
