The Bears Den - 5/5/09
....where we can't tell who we dislike more: Jason McKie or Rashied Davis.
In The Den
Chicago Sun-Times
Looks like Jerry and Lovie are worried about Brett Favre going to the Vikings.
D.J. Moore and Al Afalava had good minicamps and added to the muddled safety positions.
At this point, Afalava will miss most of the OTA's due to the NFL's school rule.
Mike Brown is still without a job and Lovie seems happy with who he has at both safety spots.
Brad Biggs thinks that the confidence that Lovie has for Graham in the safety spot actually shows confidence in Vasher.
Guess what? Don't expect Will Ta'ufo'ou to unseat Jason McKie. Sounds like the coaching staff is happy with McKie.
Chicago Tribune
Steve Rosenbloom is really excited about the Favre-to-Minny rumor.
Daily Herald
Bob LeGere thinks that Marcus Freeman was a big steal for the Bears. He also thinks that he's a traditional Will backer but will see more action at the Sam this year.
Ball State P Chris Miller is hoping to get an invite to Bears training camp.
Official Chicago Bears Website
Formers Bears Steve McMichael and Ken Margerum will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
Are you going to be at the Bears Expo? If so, Jay Cutler, Matt Forte, Orlando Pace, and Greg Olsen will be doing a Q&A session.

I would love
to see Chris Miller as a Bear! But, I am a homer… lol. But really, 2 punters from Ball State? How exciting! Represent! :oP

Agreed.
+1. I still remember the first Ball State game I ever went to as a freshman, we had an awful team, Nate Davis wasn’t even the starter yet and we go three and out on our first series and out jogs our punter and then all of the sudden he boots the ball like 45 yards, perfect spin, real high in the air and all us freshman who had never seen this guy let out a collective gasp.
They don’t call us Punter U for nothing.

Discussion here about the SAM linebacker situation; if any, the youngster who’s best suited physically to come in and compete there would be Mike Rivera, though. Don’t know how likely the Bears would be to take a risk and carry two rookie LBs among the backups, as I would guess Freeman’s going to take a spot.

According to Simeon Rice, the Bears seem to be interested in his services
I like the Idea of Rice being apart of the Bears. He’s sat out of football for a year which eases the wear on his body. I still think he can be effective with the right players on the line.

Thanks
I am not sure he would Rice would be an improvement over Brown or Ogun, but he would be a lock for first off the bench. As much as the Bears like to rotate the D-line, the opportunity for him to get 10+ sacks would certainly present itself. That, coupled with the leadership he could provide for all of the young talent on the D-line makes this an interesting story to say the least.
Not to mention Rice would be reunited with R.Marinelli and L. Smith.

please no more McKie
Looks like another year of that awesome 3rd and short dive play – which never works. At least bring in someone who can actually make that play if you insist on running it next year.

Who Do I Hate More?
Davis or McKie?
I think I have to say Davis. Other than making random clutch catches in the last two minutes or games and over time he drops everything else and is useless. I don’t hate McKie, I hate Ron Turner for calling the fullback dive. McKie is not a very good runner but is a valuable receiver out of the back field and blocker.

I don't understand the hatred for McKie
He’s running a play that was called by Turner. I saw Forte get stuffed on 3rd and 1 and a couple times 4th and 1 and I hear nothing but love for Forte. McKie is a good blocker and he catches the ball well out of the backfield. We all know that the Oline was getting manhandled on short yardage situations last year. I don’t think it’s fair to blame McKie for the fullback dive impotency.

Guilty by association
I think that’s why a lot of people dislike him. I’m fine with him coming back as long as Turner doesn’t use him in the running game; I’d rather have Jones or Peterson running in short-yardage situations than McKie.

At times he's a good blocker and at times he's a good receiver
The problem is that he can’t run the ball. And you’re right, that’s Ron’s fault for calling it. At the same time, he’s a professional football player, and if he can’t get the job done, then get someone who can.

Let's not forget two key things....
We run a plethora of 2TE sets now, and our star RB is a prolific pass catcher out of the backfield. Our new QB has a strong arm and will likely be throwing more to the WR than we were before.
So taking those two things into consideration, exactly how much are we going to actually need to pass to the FB? If we’re not going to have that triple threat beast of a FB, wouldn’t it be smarter to have a FB that actually excels at the two out of three we’re actually going to need him to do?
I agree with you entirely, but running the ball in a battering ram fashion on short yardage and laying massive blocks are a lot more in line with the skillset we need our of our FB. I could not care less about our FB’s catching ability at this point.

Me too!
Which is exactly what I’m saying. He sucks at running the ball. I’m sorry, he just doesn’t get it done. Get rid of him and pick up an actual FB who can block and run. That’s all we need.

Yep yep...
We have one that appears to be able to do it, I thought the kid out of WV looked great last year that the Seahawks picked up, but someone better than McKie at those two things should be a dime a dozen considering how few FB get drafted every year.

rather have a deuce mcallister back
a big guy with some speed (bears with forte and beenie wells are great in madden). we already have one of 2 pieces for a dynamic rb tandem… kevin jones is decent… not necessarily bringing anything special to the backfield… fortes ability to catch the ball out of the field is what makes this a possible recipe to a great offense.

i think we’ll see a vast improvement in jones.

it’s been posted before about the time it takes to come back from that injury. if he’s half the back he was his rookie season, he’ll be fine for a forte fill in. try saying that five times.

Forte fill in...
Great, taking the load off our star runner is a good idea. However, Jones is the same kind of RB in my mind. They make people miss, they don’t make people pay for the hit and keep moving.
It’d be great to have a FB that could just completely wreck that first person coming, either on the line or on the second level depending on how good the line blocking was. One thing is for sure, if Forte can get past the line he’s absolutely fantastic, but he isn’t built to be the guy pushing the pile for an automatic two yards.
We need a good short yardage/blocking FB specially if our TE are going to be more like WR-like than all about blocking.

Nigerian Nightmare?
Sklz711- The FB you described doesn’t really exist anymore, and is very rare in today’s offenses.

Maybe right now,
but we are starting to see more and more hybrid players in the league… DE/OLB, TE/WR, etc. Players are getting increasingly faster, especially some of the big guys. I fully expect to start seeing 250lb fullbacks who can run, block, and catch in the near future. A resurgence of the Mike Alstotts of the world, if you will.

b/c he'd have to try to be more invisible
than he was last year.

Not entirely his fault if the coaches weren’t using him, for whatever reason. Don’t forget, he asked to be put on the special teams squad, too.

He earned big points for that.
Good reminder.

When they did put him in
He ran backwards from the Lions.
the lions!
I really hope he can be the second half of the Forte/Other Guy duo… but I didn’t see much last year to make me think he could be.
