What do the Top 5 WR's in football have in common
Top 5 WR's in the league In my opinion
-Randy Moss
-Terrell Ownes
-Andre Johnson
-Larry Fitz
-Calvin Johnson
What do they have in common? 0 rings
You can others to the list...
-Steve Smith
-A. Boldin
I just thought i would add this because of all the crazy Wide Reciever talk around here, I understand we dont have any 1st recievers but do you really need amazing recievers to win a ring?
Thoughts?

You're absolutley right.
But I think it makes no point. It’s an obvious case of causation verses correlation. It has no logical merit. Just because the they have a correlating number of rings doesn’t mean that the WR’s being extremely talented is CAUSING them to not wing Super Bowls.
You don’t need amazing WR to win a ring. In fact, they’re isn’t one position that you need an amazing player at to win it. (Trent Dilfer anyone?) It just helps to be competent at all positions.
Besides, both Randy and TO got really close… (T.O probably would have a ring if he wasn’t injured) Fitz & Boldin have been there… Calvin is so young… Andre is on a terrible team. If anything, I look at your list, and 5 out of the 7 players have had some playoff success, so, that makes me want a Top Notch WR even more.
And, in the case of the 2009 Chicago Bears, our defense has shown some obvious decline, and we are (it’s odd in Chicago) showing some real potential on the Offensive side of the football. So, some of us feel like we only have one real gaping whole on offense keeping us from being able to outscore most teams no matter how bad our defense plays. Where as, on defense, we have severe safety issues, pass rush issues, corner issues… there is no quick fix on that side of the ball.
Lord... please let the Bears pick a good WR at #49....
You would?
I don’t know, I guess my bias is based toward the player who’s had a longer career, But Megatron is really good. Give it 4 more years, He’ll be a Bear.

If I'm starting a team and I have to take one of those two
I’m taking Megatron over his action figure sized counterpart without a doubt. Probably the most talented and physically gifted receiver in the game today along with Andre Johnson and TO/Moss

In the next 5 years
Calvin is the one trending upwards.
But Steve Smith is in his prime. While Moss and TO are on the downside.
I was talking more from an athletic ability point of view...
But if Johnson is trending upwards as you say then I’ll take his 1200 yard seasons in the meantime until he hits his prime. And besides I’ve always had a thing for big, tall, fast receivers :)

On a list of the Top 5 recievers?
Yes.
Calvin Johnson is a top 5 talent… but I don’t think he’s better than Steve Smith.
He may be eventually. But I don’t think he is.
If its Wayne
ive always thought he was one of the most overrated WR’s in he league.

a good possession type receiver(almost identical to iglesias, btw) that took advantage of the double coverage that harrison was getting, and being thrown to from peyton can’t hurt your stats at all…

it was funnier the first time you posted it
not in all caps either.
Noone is saying we need a top 5 receiver
But you said it yourself, you understand we do not have a number 1 Wide Receiver. All i am saying is we are putting too much pressure on Devin Hester to be a number 1 receiver with so little experience. The fact is an established WR (not even saying a top 5 or even top 30) would do more to benefit us than hurt us. The way it’s looking though, it does not look like it’s going to happen this year unless someone the Bears want gets released because the Bears have not pulled the trigger on any FA WR so far, and it’s not looking like it’s going to happen. I truly hope JA has a plan for this.
JAs Plan....
his plan was to get cutler….with cutler and a D we can win..draft wideouts and sign olinemen that was his plan…lets see how it works..
now if only we knew mcdaniels was going to blow our first round pick for a second round pick we should have tried to offer it to him and kept it…instead i think the seacocks have it
Bring back our honey bears...sick and tired of hearing about the dallas cowboy cheerleaders and the bars they go work at when they quit. cold weather + cheerleaders in skimpy outfits = lots of fun
You could go back 5 years, 10 years...
and look at the top 5 WRs in the league at that time, and some years you will find championship rings in that crowd, and some years you won’t.
For the sake of argument, look at the top 5 receivers of 2002.
- Marvin Harrison
- Randy Moss
- Amani Toomer
- Hines Ward
- Plaxico Burress

The top 5 WRs may not have rings
BUT the super bowl winners all have a true number 1 receiver. You don’t need a superstar, but i do think you need a true number 1, and we don’t have one.
2008: Steelers: Hines Ward AND Santonio Holmes
2007: Giants: Plaxico Burress
2006: Colts: Wayne AND Harrison
2005: Ward
2003-4: Patriots: Deon branch
2002: Tampa: Keyshawn
If you include the Super Bowl losers in that time period, you can add Larry Fitz, Boldin, T.O., Steve Smith and Randy Moss.
So you do need a number 1. You don’t necessarily have to have the league’s best WR, but it sure helps. We don’t have a number 1. Perhaps we’ll have such a dominant D, and such a creative, balanced offense that it doesn’t matter that we don’t have WRs, but I think we’ll be a WR short of the Super Bowl, which is a shame since Boldin, Edwards, etc are still potentially available.
DEJESUS!!!
On that list... Holmes, Ward, and Branch
Were all SB MVPs

The orginal argument of this topic is retarded
Bottom line: it’s a team sport. You win as a team, regardless of individual efforts.

No... what I'm saying is it's a team sport.
Some teams have had some of the best WRs in NFL History… Hall of Famers. And they’ve won Super Bowls… multiple Super Bowls. Other teams have had some of the best WRs in NFL History, and never won a thing. It’s a team friggin sport. It doesn’t mean you do or don’t need the best players in the game to win. Of course you want the best players. But, you need the best “team” to win.
The guys below are among the best WRs to ever play the game… some had the fortune of being on winners… some didn’t.
John Stallworth – 4 SB rings, HOF
Lynn Swann – 4 SB rings, SB MVP, HOF
Fred Biletnikoff – 1 SB ring, SB MVP, HOF
Art Monk – 3 SB rings, HOF
Michael Irvin – 3 SB rings, HOF
Jerry Rice – 3 SB rings, SB MVP
Hines Ward – 2 SB rings, SB MVP
Issac Bruce – 1 SB ring
Tory Holt – 1 SB ring
Marvin Harrison – 1 SB ring
Reggie Wayne – 1 SB ring
Plaxico Burress – 1 SB ring
Steve Largent – 0 SBs, HOF
Charlie Joiner – 0 SBs, HOF
Charley Taylor – 0 SBs, HOF
James Lofton – 0 SBs, HOF
Andre Reed – 0 SB rings
Chris Carter – 0 SBs
Tim Brown – 0 SBs
Henry Ellard – 0 SB
Irving Fryar – 0 SB rings
Terrell Owens – 0 SB rings
Randy Moss – 0 SB rings

Right. good point
It is a team sport, no doubt, but I also think that you don’t have to be great in one aspect of the game, but good in all aspects. The way I see it, In the NFL, Equally balanced teams win championships.
Think of a superbowl winning team that had a major flaw in one of their phases. I sure can’t think of any, even the Ravens in 2000 had a passing game was consistent enough to win a superbowl.
Think With Your Dipstick Jimmy!
by ifuwannacrownem on May 6, 2009 1:40 PM CDT up reply actions
the Ravens did it on their defense and a very decent running attack
while their 2 starting qbs combined for 300 yards they nearly threw as many tds as they did ints.
Most championship teams are dominant in one phase of the game.
Whether it’s having the best D (least points allowed in the league), or the best O (most points scored in the league), most Super Bowl championship teams fall into one of those categories, or come very close (top 3).

Dominant in one phase, maybe
but consistent in all phases, ignoring rankings for a sec, that’s what makes a team equally Balanced.

interesting use of the term "balanced"
the 1999 Rams played good defense but that team was not balanced.
the 2000 Ravens played good offense but they were not balanced.
1999 rams
ranked 20th against the pass, but had the best overall run defense. that’s balance
the 2000 Ravens ranked 22nd in passing yards, but ranked 6th in rushing yards. that’s balance.

All you're doing is stating the obvious for a playoff caliber team.
If you play well in all 3 phases of the game, of course you’re going to win.
But, you DOMINATE in one phase of the ball, and play well in the others, you’ll win a championship.
If you want to really investigate this, click on each winner and look at where they rank in PS (Points scored) and PA (points allowed).
Most champions are dominant (ranked top 3) in at least one of the two… and many champions are ranked in the top at both.

I don't agree with the original

One of the golden rules for our authors at WCG
is for us to have to be able to defend our posts and statements. What this deos is keeps us from posting things we cannot defend.
While your FanPost simply asked for everyone’s thoughts, it might be a good idea to jump in and give your thoughts as well.
We quite frequently throw out different ideas for contemplation, just to get a good conversation started. And you did just that, which is good, but if people call you out on something, you have to be able to take the criticism as well.
