If I was Harris I might do the same

Having to constantly read about how your knees are the same as a guy twice your age and how you can’t stay on the field and how you need to stay on the field because you are most important to the success of the team, etc, etc. Yeah, I would probably want to strike back too.

by Sam Householder on Jun 11, 2009 7:46 AM CDT reply actions

I disagree

He signed a lucrative contract and has done squat since. Every damn time I read the paper, he didn’t practice to either rest his knees or because he was hurt.

Tommie, put up or shut up. How about you actually practice and earn that monster contract you got instead of worrying what Joe Numbnuts thinks of you.

So... how does Rod Marinelli feel about Harris not practicing at all?

How does Warren Sapp feel about Harris not practicing at all?

I don't know...

But I hope they get on his ass about it. Tommie needs to actually play before he can be snappy at anyone.

i wish he would've just had surgery!!!

no one would be talking about him sitting out of completely voluntary OTAs!!!

Couldn't agree more

whenever you read about any true Superstar, in any sport, it seems like the common thread is the incredible work ethic and how hard they go in practice. That’s what makes them better players and helps make the players that are around them better in the process. I can’t definitely say that Harris is lazy, but I’m starting to feel that way. I’m sure his knees are an issue, but this is the NFL and you are being paid an incredible amount to go the extra mile and set an example to your team and the fans.

by BearFan611 on Jun 11, 2009 10:55 AM CDT up reply actions

allan iverson, michael strahan

are both superstars that hated practice, and rex grossman was a practice monster. Practice is relative.

Walter Payton, Michael Jordan, Dick Butkus, Gale Sayers, Mike Singletary, Ryne Sandberg,

Andre Dawson (talk about knee problems), Dan Hampton, & I haven’t even left Chicago yet. For every two like you mentioned there are probably 25 like these guys. It’s not relative, those people with the work ethic and attitude that goes along with the talent level aren’t the elite in their field by accident.

by BearFan611 on Jun 11, 2009 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions

ofcourse it does

my point was you dont have to practice to be good, and that you can practice like crazy and still suck, you giving example of players that were good and also practice doesnt refute that at all, because it cant, because there will always be people who are good despite not practicing making practice relative.

"snuffalufagus fucks my shit up"

by leopoldjones on Jun 11, 2009 1:49 PM CDT up reply actions

That was the original point,

I didn’t say that practice was the only thing that made them what they were, but that the truly great ones understand that it is a necessity to reach the pinnacle of their profession. They may not “like” doing it, but it’s the price you pay for greatness. Talent, at that level, is a given so to maximize that talent you put the work in as well. You do run into the occasional star, like Iverson or Strahan, who still do well, but I would say that it’s more the exception than the rule. Also, all due respect to them, I don’t think either of them will ever be remembered in the same category as the Jordan/Payton/Butkus type of Superstar.

I should have mentioned another guy as well, and he should be near or at the top of the list, Tiger Woods. No one has more talent but no one puts in more work/practice as he does either. He, along with the other guys I mentioned will go down in history as some of the greatest that ever played their sport, I don’t thnk that 20 years from now, a lot of people would say that about Iverson and Strahan. They’re very good, but not the greatest.

by BearFan611 on Jun 11, 2009 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions

should have mentioned another guy as well, and he should be near or at the top of the list, Tiger Woods. No one has more talent but no one puts in more work/practice as he does either.

I read an article last year about how Vijay Singh has put in 6 hours on the driving range, every day of his life, for the last 30 years. On days he plays, he does 3 hours before, and 3 hours after.

by Dane Noble on Jun 11, 2009 2:58 PM CDT up reply actions

I've heard that same thing about Singh

if you’ve ever had the chance to see the Haney Project, in one of the episodes they go into Tiger’s average day which runs about 12 hours including excercise, practice, 2 seperate 9 hole rounds, and more practice to work on what he saw during those rounds. I got tired just listening to it.

The point was, that the truly great ones almost all have a similar approach to their professions.

doesnt strahan own the sack record

and wasnt he one of the achors of the giants d that be the vaunted patriots, I bet people we talking about his work ethic in otas that season too

by leopoldjones on Jun 11, 2009 4:20 PM CDT up reply actions

So, just to be clear

you think ultimately, Strahan should be remembered in the same way that people remember Payton/Jordan/ Butkus/Tiger, etc.? I have to strongly disagree there. No way that ever happens. Again, he was a very good player, but not one of the greatest of all time.

by BearFan611 on Jun 11, 2009 4:36 PM CDT up reply actions

wow didnt say that at all

but he is one of the best ever at his postiion, and question to you have any evidence as to the work ethics of butkus, dawson, sayers, cause those players played over 30 years ago and unless you have a scouting report, or actually saw them practice both of which I doubt it sound like you just pulled that out of your arse. if you do have evidence though I will respectibly concede but again I doubt it.

"snuffalufagus fucks my shit up"

by leopoldjones on Jun 11, 2009 4:45 PM CDT up reply actions

didn't strahan fake retirement

the year the giants won the super bowl until training camp was over then magically decided to come back and play? he wasn’t so shabby that year in 07. I agree it’s a little lame for Tommie to keep ducking out of practices but of course all of this will be forgotten come sept when he starts planting rodgers into the lambeau field turf GO BEARS!!!

by reefermadness3 on Jun 11, 2009 5:13 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah

I saw the americas game (bear fann 611 this is my evidence) of it and he talked about how he hated practice especially practice with tom coughlin(not sure how you spell and I dont want to look it up) so that might have been the impetus for his farveesque decision to come back

"snuffalufagus fucks my shit up"

by leopoldjones on Jun 11, 2009 5:26 PM CDT up reply actions

You've got to be kidding me....

sorry, I don’t have any “practice reports” documentation. If you ever heard or read anything other than stats or realized that there was a world before the year 2000, you’d understand how ridiculous that last comment was. Did I “pull it out of my arse”? Do I have “evidence”? Anyone who ever admired any of these great athletes has listened to stories about how they practiced and prepared and made they’re teammates better. It’s interesting that you didn’t pick Jordan or Tiger to question, which tells me you agree with those because you actually read or saw things about them yourself. I can’t help it if you weren’t around for the others. If you don’t want to believe me, that’s your choice, but my guess is most people would agree with my statements.

by BearFan611 on Jun 11, 2009 5:37 PM CDT up reply actions

so your are pulling it out of your arse

so I am supposed to beleive your argument based on stories you have heard, a good argument needs to be based in facts, your opinion that so and so is a hard worker thus must have been a hard practicer is specious at best , just beacuase you are a good player doesnt mean you either like or want to practice, after starting on footbal teams in highschool and college (in the big ten) I can tell you there are tons of players who not only disliked practice but did everything they could to get out of it, and why wouldnt they practice sucks I mean 7 on 7’s are fun and some of the other contact drills are fun but everything else sucks, and I defy anyone who isnt a freak of nature to say otherwise, oh and I didnt mention tiger or mj cause golf and basketball arent my sports. oh and I take offense your assertion that I dont know anything about these greats, in fact I am certain I know more about most of them especiually butkus seeing as I played for the same team as him and lived in the same dorm he did but believe what you want, I will still believe evedince based facts.

"snuffalufagus fucks my shit up"

by leopoldjones on Jun 11, 2009 5:51 PM CDT up reply actions

You know you are really making it tough to stick by the rules

of attacking the comment and not the person. Nothing you say makes sense, is rarely spelled correctly, and your own comments contradict your argument. You say “evidence” yet you talk about an interview you heard. How is that evidence? How do we know you heard it, understood it correctly, or haven’t confused him with some other player? It’s just heresay, and that’s all any of this type of debate can be based on. You are the one that can’t seperate LIKING practice from actually practicing. In fact you’ve never provided “facts” that your guys didn’t practice, only that they hated it. TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. You may be totally disrespecting them because you can’t tell the difference.
Don’t even bother responding, because I’ve wasted enough time debating with you.

by BearFan611 on Jun 11, 2009 6:19 PM CDT up reply actions

ok

thanks for letting me know that I was right about my first assertion that you were talking out of your arse, in my experience when someone resorts to attacking your spelling they really dont have any leg to stand on, and you are right I was saying that the only good evidence is fact and then I said alot of people didnt like practice in my experience, so I guess I dont have evidence on that other than my personal experience, and the strahan thing was on americas game its an nfl netwrk tv show that chronicles superbowl winners, if you dont believe me look it up.

Jerry Angelo deserves part of the blame for signing Tommie regardless of doctors warning his knees were like those of a man twice his age.

When you sign players who play at around 300 lbs and they have bad knees, that’s just crazy. You can’t build a consistent defense around a player who’s constantly limited in practice and games by his mobility. Everyone griped about Mike Brown’s injuries, but Tommie has arguably been nearly as unreliable because of knee issues. It’s a shame, but the Bears have been in major denial about Tommie for a couple of years.

A cynical person would suggest that perhaps Tommie enjoys having a ready made excuse to avoid practice. Let’s not forget that Lovie sat him down for a game for missing a knee therapy session. To me, that indicates that Tommie lacks the commitment to team and to perform up to his contract.

Dan Hampton had 10 knee surgeries in his career

Didn’t stop him from being a HOFer.

Harris better show some desire to win.

Practice vs. health

I agree he needs to live up to his monster contract, but I’d rather have him healthy when the season starts. He’s been in the league and the Bears system for 5 years now, so I think he knows what he’s doing. His problem has been his health, not whether or not he knows how to play at a Pro-bowl level.

True that about Hampton, but at least he had the knee issues repaired annually.

Tommie seems to prefer the holistic approach. Besides, he gets paid regardless, right? Hampton did whatever it took to get back on the field. Tommie is (not) playing himself right out of what appeared to be a HOF career.

by BigGeorgeTX on Jun 11, 2009 11:13 AM CDT up reply actions

Exactly

Hampton would run through a wall if it meant him playing; Tommie Harris wouldn’t run through anything because “he just needs a rest” or “his knee’s bothering him.”

Call it how you want

You keep being a Tommie Harris apologist….see how far that gets ya. In all seriousness, the man is always out of practice. I will never ever apologize for trying to hold a guy accountable who got a monster contract and doesn’t show that much on the field, especially in comparison to his contract.

Heard.

He can start acting like Dennis Rodman for all I care, IF the dude plays like a “Monster of the Midway” this season. Everyone will love, that Harris took extra care of his knee, this OTA.

And if he doesn’t play like a beast this season?

Healthy or not, JA needs to be done with him.
