John St. Who?

This is an article from the Trib about 10 things I know about the Bears. I thought the #1 was hilarious and says a lot about this off season.
1. I know how hard it is to remember when the Bears' top off-season priority was re-signing left tackle John St. Clair.
How much time did we talk about how he was the key to our offseason? Then Jerry signed Frank Omiyale, Kevin Shaffer and Orlando Pace; combine that with the Jay Cutler deal and I had completely forgotten about JSC.

I remember how pissed ChiFan was
when St. Clair went to Cleveland. His main gripe was that we didn’t take care of St. Clair in the previous season, and it looked like we were just shooting ourselves in the thigh.
Luckily, this was not something that came back to haunt us. But in all seriousness, at that time, none of us had any faith in our management to make good things happen in the offseason.
Somehow, Jerry seems to have saved his job, and has given our coaches the responsibility of making things happen. Have to wonder if Lovie, Bob, Ron, and Rod are good enough to get the job done…

He seemed well-liked, but St. Clair probably isn't a starting-caliber NFL tackle
He gave up almost 10 sacks and the Bears’ yards-per-carry average was lowest when running to the left side last year. So, when St.Clair’s contract was up, they basically let him go…

I remember when...
The Bears fans we’re angry that we let “The Great” John St. Clair went to Cleveland and we got Kevin Schaffer. lol
Now we talk about taking th NFC north.
Ooohh how times have change.

I don't think we ever were calling him great
it was more of he was the best we could get, so why get rid of him. St. Clair is probably going to start in Cleveland, Shaffer is not unless something changes.

Read Away in the thread
There are several people who take a disappointed tone and sadly I think it’s not because we liked him or thought he was good but because we assumed it was the best that JA could/would do.

Two things...
One: I hope that the Bears come into this season with a chip on their shoulders. The most encouraging bit in that article was point 9 where the Haugh said this is the most intense pre-season he’s seen since Lovie arrived here. We need that because one of the biggest weaknesses of this team and the players over the last two years was arrogance and lack of passion. If the Bears (and the fans) come into this season thinking that we are entitled to the Division championship because the front office made some moves, then we’ll be watching another post-season from the cheap seats.
Two: I really hope Brett goes to the Vikings. I want nothing more than to have them get all the attention from the National media so that we can quietly slip under the radar for as long as possible. I want the Bears to have swagger, sure, but not because ESPN or Peter King says we should. I want us to have swagger when we finish the first quarter of the season 3-1 and believe that we can beat anyone when we do our jobs.

Favre
I actually think he makes their team worse cause of his turnovers, and gobs of media attention. I agree that he would in essence take away a lot of pressure from the Bears. The less coverage they get on major networks the better.

All the right moves
Sizzle is really responding as well as anyone can expect so far to questions regarding his character.
I was as upset as anyone when St. Clair left for Cleveland. Does everyone remember the calm before the storm this offseason? The Bears hadn’t added anyone of significance besides Omiyale and only had one OT under contract (Williams).

What this off season does is show why the typical fan isn't a GM.
I remember early in the off season people on the boards were screaming for the Bears to do something, anything. If we had signed TO or some of the high priced FAs early on we would never have been in a position to acquire Jay Cutler when he became available. Just because the Bears don’t announce who they’re pursuing doesn’t mean they aren’t working behind the scenes to improve the team. We probably will never know what negotiations they are or were in unless something comes of it, which is as it should be. It’s not the GMs job to provide fodder for the sports media to write about. Public pursuit of and negotiation with players winds up with many teams overpaying or looking bad if they don’t sign the object of their affections, such as the Vikings pursuit of Brett Favre. If they don’t sign him they’re suddenly put in the position of proclaiming they have all the confidence in the world in TJack and Sage, when everyone knows it’s a bald lie.

Most rational fans
are aware of this, but it can be frustrating when a mediocre team hadn’t improved up to that point in the offseason (actually gotten worse).

Silence
Sometimes being out of peoples mouths is better than being in the spotlight, let management make the decisions that bring the trophy home. Us as fans just be loud as He** come gametime.

And be loud as He**
in the offseason. Teams, should have the fans in their ears. The fans can & do influence a teams decisions.

that may work for other teams in other cities, but...
don’t you remember how “SURPRISED” JA was with the fans reaction to getting cutler?
Although Angelo did expect some buzz in town when he made the deal, he admits he was a bit surprised at just how loudly — and positively — fans and Bears players alike responded to his bringing in Cutler.
“I really didn’t understand it until after the fact,” Angelo said. “I was really taken back by [the fan reaction]. I’m not a Chicagoan…”

It has been a long and crazy offseason
And I think it is telling that even mid-March we were pissed about how things were going and then in the course of 2 days everything changed.
I agree with Haugh about Burress, if winning is really his 4th or 5th highest priority (and I know no one knows for sure but it makes sense) then I don’t want him any where near this team. I think that as much as #1 WRs help your team they can bring you down just as much. I think the Cowboys will flourish without TO this year.
by GallopingGhost on Jun 15, 2009 2:07 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Agreed, that’s an excellent point about Burress. Not to say he couldn’t pull out an amazing season regardless but, in light of that, I’m much less inclined to hope for his addition to our receiving corps.

do you really think winning is that far down on the totem pole???
this is just me, but he won a ring with the giants… the giants came loose after his suspension(for what ever reason you want to use), then they cut him… if i were plax, i’d be wanting more jewelry for revenge/redemption purposes!!!

John ST. Clair
I was never concerned with the loss of ST. Clair I think he was terrible and anyone could see he was over matched he was slow weak & had terrible footwork in this day & age of free agency I figured they could get someone better.

Brandon Marshall requests trade...?
http://www.rotoworld.com/content/HeadLines.aspx?sport=NFL&hl=145112
http://www.koaradio.com/pages/cmn.html
I can’t listen (at work) to the track on 850 KOA (2nd link) but assume rotoworld listened and says:
NFL insider Adam Schefter reported on 850 KOA in Denver that Brandon Marshall asked Broncos owner Pat Bowlen for a trade during their meeting Friday.
Per Schefter, Bowlen asked Marshall to take some time to reconsider his stance. Marshall is not expected to back down, however, which means the Broncos are right back where they were with Jay Cutler. Though it’s possible that a new contract could assuage Marshall, it’s more likely that the receiver will continue to push for a trade. Perhaps the Bears will be interested. Jun. 15 – 3:11 pm et
