Lovie Smith Tops In The NFL

Maybe I've read this some other time and forgot, but when I saw this it really surprised me.  Lovie Smith is the top paid coach in the NFL.  Huh?  Lovie Smith is the highest paid Head Coach in the National Football League?

Forbes magazine released a list of the Top 10 earning coaches;

Star-divide

1 - Phil Jackson - NBA, Lakers - 10 million

2 - Larry Brown - NBA, Bobcats - 7 million

3 - Mike D'Antoni - NBA, Knicks - 6 million

4 - Don Nelson - NBA, Warriors - 6 million

5 - Lovie Smith - NFL, Bears - 5.5 million

6 - Jeff Fisher - NFL, Titans - 5.5 million

7 - Doc Rivers - NBA, Celtics - 5.5 million

8 - Tom Coughlin - NFL, Giants - 5.5 million

9 - Bill Belichick - NFL, Patriots - 5 million

10 - Jim Mora - NFL, Seahawks - 5 million

Well, technically he's tied for the top spot, but seeing his name attached to that 5.5 million you have to think if the Bears don't rebound and head back to the playoffs there could be a change made.  After 2 straight disappointing seasons with no playoff appearances, will Jerry Angelo allow a 3rd to happen without consequence?

I think

After Holmgren retired it put Lovie tied for the top spot. Before he retired I think Holmgren was in the $7 mil area.

I might be wrong, haven’t fact checked it, but I’m pretty sure he was the highest paid coach until he retired.

you realize that’s at least 2 years in a row an illini got a ring? Dave Deihl (sp?) got one with the giants. don’t know if indy had any and i’m too lazy to look it up.

Half the league has coached less than 3 years and are on their first HC contract.

Lovie was the one of the last guys to sign an extension and it was after 2 successful season and a Superbowl appearance. I don’t think it is really anything more than that.

Kick it to me... I'm open!

He should earn it this year…Unless the ViQueens pull another playoff run out of their butts.

there's a poll on the bleacher report that "CLAIMS"

green bay will take it, so i guess we don’t have to worry about the vikes anymore… hope that puts you at ease…

And you could make the argument that Lovie Smith is

more deserving than three of the names ahead of him.

Somebody should make a comic called "Tulowitzki the Combat Shortstop". I'd read it.

too bad that

if he does suck this year and he gets fired, he’s still making that much sitting on his ass next year.

Yeah, but that doesn't count the perks Belichick gets.

like the blood of Pats cheerleaders ritually sacrificed prior to games, the burlap bags of kittens he drowns to pass the time—you know, that kind of thing. That’s gotta add up.

He's a writer over at MCM, the Titans site.

He asked wilt to spell Jeff Fisher’s name correctly, the coach of the Titans.

Derek?

why in the world

isn’t Belichick the highest paid coach?!!?

If you want to crown em...

by JohnnyTruant on Jun 20, 2009 11:22 AM CDT reply actions

Don't quote me...

but I believe he will be either next year or the year after. If I remember right, his contract escalates in such a way that he will be the highest paid soon, unless someone else gets a monster deal. I’ll look for the article (I think it may have even been the original article on the Highest Paid Coaches that mentioned it)

Lovie On Top?

WOW! 1 trip to a SuperBowl makes you a rich man. I don’t know about this one. Lovie is a good Coach but he’s no Ditka. His promotion of Bob Babitch to Defensive Coordinator and running Ron Rivera out of town stands out in my miind. His value? I think 2.5 – 3 Million a year is plenty of compensation. However, he brokered the deal so good for Lovie Smith.

by Gesiakob on Jun 20, 2009 5:11 PM CDT reply actions

For comparison's sake,

Does anybody know what Dungy was making before he retired?

lovie may have his flaws

but looking at the big picture he has done a lot more good than harm for the beloved orange and blue. Lifting our team out of the dookie pile it has been more or less stuck in since the mid90’s (2001 of course being the exception) and helping us be competitive in the NFC again is a big plus. Personally I prefer his statue-like attitude on the field versus someone who loses their mind when mindboggingly stupid errors happen. The very few clips I have ever caught of Lovie in the locker room makes him seem more human, as he actually raises his voice and acts slightly animated. That being said if I could change one thing I would prefer a tougher training camp. Not just for a little more excitement when I am making the frequent trips to Bourbonnais but the minor increase in risking
injury is worth the emphasis on tackling and contact drills. This is only what I see though. Not really sure where I was going with this. I guess 5.5 is a boatload of money but unless he shits the bed this year it is semi-worth it.

totally deserves it

yea i think after homey retired lovied got bumped up but he defnitly deserves took a 5—11 team to 11-5 and divison champs to 13-3 and became divison and conference champs he totally deserves his money
LONG LIVE LOVIE!

Time to put up or shut up

I think if the defense doesn’t rebound under Lovie’s tutelege and control, he’ll be shown the way out of HH.

"I'm not so mean. I wouldn't ever go out to hurt anybody deliberately - unless it was, you know, important, like a league game or something." - Dick Butkus

And Belichick?

He gets 5 million a year. $500,000 less then Lovie. What’s wrong with this picture?
