Good Story on the Slaughter Player
Too bad about Roland Harper and the prospect of Bernard Berrian with Favre is a bit scary but I think Favre is too washed up to make a difference. If only the Vikes had not overpaid Berrian he could still be with us and we would have a much scarier looking WR Corp of Berrian/Hester/Bennett/Knox.

A pretty fast WR group at that.

Bears should have Franchise Tagged Berrian
but they didn’t want to piss off Rosenhaus again.

Nope.
It was simple. They had to choose: Briggs or Berrian. They only had enough money for one of them. They made the right decision.

+1
to me, it was a no-brainer… i mean, i liked berrian, he was on the cusp. between the orton/griese/grossman collective collaboration, he still managed to scratch at a 1000yds in ’07. but again, a no-brainer. the only “hate” i have for the guy is that he plays in our divivsion.

Where are the numbers that support this?
I always read the same thing; JA had to choose between Briggs and Berrian. With the Bears being under the cap as usual my question is…did the Bears not want to pay both of them premium dollars?

I'll snoop around for them
They weren’t tremendously under the cap if I recall….there was enough money for one and that was it.

Peanut should be excited
along with most other NFL cornerbacks. It’s been beaten to death but Favre would be great not only for throwing more picks but also because it keeps the rock out of AP’s hands more often.

and urlacher
but as excited as everyone is, favre on a good thing is not something laugh. The machismo is fun and all, but the vikings were already a better team than the bears, people are overplaying the “favre makes them worse” angle.

eh
in the last two decades we’ve seen what we’re going to see. i should look and see what his rating does as his attempts go up. it’s bret favre, i don’t think with a good team around him he will screw the pooch, its all still there. it would be nice to be wrong about that.

I really don't fear Brett Favre
we beat him twice when he ’07 when the Packers were clearly the second best team in the NFL behind New England.

I agree...
The best thing the Vikings can do is convert the LB, and CB to wideouts. They stand a better chance of catching farve passes. When all that crap was going on with farve before he went to the jets, I was praying he wouldn’t come to chicago, But if he had, Urlacher would have had to be made a wideout… He has a taste for farve passes.

Why the hell would anyone care if Berrian was ready to have a breakout season?
by PolishSausage.Ditka.Bears. on Jun 27, 2009 5:53 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
because all of our receivers leave us and then have break-out seasons...
but i’ll tell you one thing, never again will you hear anybody ever say that “chicago is where receivers go to die”… EVER!!! well, at least while sizzle’s in town…

Berrian is overpaid and lame.
by PolishSausage.Ditka.Bears. on Jun 27, 2009 7:24 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
overpaid? ABSOLUTELY!!!
lame? well, as much as i hate to say this, he didn’t look too lame when he burned us for the longest reception TD of entire season… almost a thousand yards, with less than 50 catches, no-less??? hey, i didn’t wanna’ see him go, but i’m not gonna’ discredit his abilities… esp with the likes of ferotte and tjax tossin’ to him. 20 yds/catch… that’s a game-changer.
Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear.
by windycity72 on Jun 27, 2009 8:01 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with you backing up his abilities
However, don’t use the longest reception of the season as a point to build him up. Charles Tillman was off in La-La Land and went inside when he should have stuck with Berrian. That wasn’t Berrian being good; that was Berrian taking advantage of a dumbass play by Tillman.
I'M A MAN! I'M 23!
by ChiFan13 on Jun 27, 2009 8:41 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It was a dumbass play by Tillman
But as a Bears fan who was there, it was all predicated on the presence of AP and the fact that the Queens were backed up on their goal line in an obvious run situation. Hell yeah, Tillman should have never been playing run that badly, but AP’s presence certainly can lead even good players into making bad decisions.

I just wanted to call him lame because he isn't a bear.
and went to a division rival. so he’s lame.

Berrian is a top 10 paid wide receiver in this league.
When he signed his contract I think it made him top 5. He hasn’t come CLOSE to living up to THAT billing. More overpaid than even Tommie Harris!!

by Just Dave on Jun 27, 2009 10:07 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
damn right he hasn't lived up to it.
That’s probably the reason he’s “ready” to have his break out year because he knows if he doesn’t it’s going to be talked about in the media.

Well
Tillman just made a bad play. I understand what you’re talking about, but he just made a bad play.
Are you from MN/going to the game in Minny this year?

From Iowa and
going to the Browns game in Chi this year, but occasionally go to the Queens game in Minny. Bad, bad, bad, play indeed, but somewhat understandable, that’s all.

Where in IA?
I’m living in Cedar Falls currently. And, I’ll be attending the @ Minny game….email me if you want tickets.
I know what Charles Tillman was trying to guard against, but it was fairly unexcuseable.

Very inexcusable, but ALMOST understandable.
Let’s call it the general Marshalltown area and I probably won’t have enough vacation time (never do) or money, to attend another game next season. Plus I always have to budget enough to attend a Hawks game or two. Graduated from UNI btw and really miss the chili cheese fries at Pour Richard’s on the hill.

I’m in grad school at UNI, so I’ll most likely be attending the UNI @ Iowa game.
You must be a wee bit older than me….never heard of Pour Richards, and I’ve been on the hill a lot. Have you been to the OP? Great pizza.

Isn't that the OP II?
I thought the original was in Waverly. It is great pizza. Is Stebbs still on the hill or can I now get REALLY depressed? And yes, I suppose I am a wee bit older. Let’s stick with that. A wee bit.

Had two of my finals held there….great place.
Re Stebs…..I just Googled it and it closed in 2000. So maybe you’re not THAT much older than me :)
Was the Hydrant around when you were a Panther?

No, never heard of the Hydrant.
Let’s put it this way, when I went to UNI it was still pretty “new” to use the internet to find a source for a paper. I remember not really being sure how to or if I wanted to risk using such a “shaky” source.

I do remember watching a young nobody named Kenny Wayne Sheppard play guitar ay Stebs.
If you don’t know who that is google him. He became a pretty big name guitar player for a while in the mid 90’s. Back then he was a nobody and I sat probably 10 feet from him just amazed by his ability.

Vikings are the team to beat in the NFC North, with or without Farve
To think otherwise is to think with your heart as a Bear fan instead of your head. The Vikings are real good. A potentially great defense, a great offensive line, wide receiver strength and the game’s best running back in Adrian Peterson.
$136 million payroll for a .500 style ballclub. Good work Jim.
by BLou on Jun 27, 2009 10:29 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
All that got them was 10-6 and a quick exit from the playoffs.
While I like a lot of the things they have… they still aren’t great. Great QB play is more often than not, the deciding factor. And… well… Tavaris Jackson, Sage Rosenfels, or a retired Brett Favre, is not going to provide that.
Their whole defense is designed around their two big Williams boys at DT. And the most import one, Pat Williams will turn 37 years old in October. Those two big men, have allowed the Vikings to stop the run without any extra defenders in the box. And that dynamic is gonna change real fast.
Over the past few years, they’ve stopped the run with such ease, that teams have just elected to pass the ball against them… passing so often that they’ve surrendered among the most passing yards in the NFL during that timespan. Now, as that’s already been a trouble spot, their #1 CB and prized FA acquisition, Antoine Winfield, just turned 32 years old.
I’d suggest you stop hugging the Vikings nuts, and instead, rationally analyze their situation. It’s wonderful to have one of the games best RBs. But, if you don’t have a QB and the proper supporting cast, you’re not going to get too far. See: Walter Payton 1976 – 1983.
The Bears have put together a pretty good team here, and have the type of QB in Jay Cutler that makes the difference. We have no slouch at RB ourselves, with Matt Forte. We’ve revamped our offensive line, which was a major weakness last season, and beefed up at TE with Michael Gaines to help our short yardage package. We will rely on Cutler to get production from our WRs like he did with youngsters in Denver (Eddie Royal had 90+ catches a rookie, and Brandon Marshall had over 100 catches in his second season).
On the other side of the ball, our biggest concern was our pass rush. So, we added the best D-line coach in the NFL to whip our talented players into shape. We added another starting caliber LB, who was a tackling machine in St. Louis, and we’ve at least created a big competition at safety, which was our other main concern on defense.

That really doesn't give me a reason to care if Berrian has a breakout season.
Calvin Johnson is the best receiver in the NFC North, but if there was an article about him on
WCG I wouldn’t personally care to read it. The Vikings are the team to beat yes, but we knew that going into this season, it doesn’t make me want to read about them thinking they are going to succeed. Frankly, the Lions have started to make me think they might be the team to beat, they have made some nice pickups and when you have an 0-16 team with a new coach along with hungry veterans and new acquisitions, that can be very dangerous. I think the Bears are the strongest team in the North and if it wasn’t for poor D-line play we would have won the North and had an 11-5 record without a pro bowl QB, revamped O-line, improved SSLB and the best D-line coach in the biz.
