2010 Free Agent Wide Receivers
While it may be a little soon, but it's the offseason so I've had time to think about this. What if the Bears do well in the 2009 NFL Season but a glaring need is still the Wide Receiver position? I'm hoping this isn't the case and that one of the rookies ends up showing enough promise or that Hester finally breaks out but let's play devil's advocate.
It often takes years for rookie WR's to contribute significantly and Hester is short and dropped some go ahead touchdowns last year. The defense is aging period. The defense will not be as good as the 05-06 defense in 2012 or 2013. Hopefully some players step up and take over some key positions (Marcus Freeman here's to looking at you).
Angelo has shown that he wants to win a championship, and he knows the window is closing. He traded his left arm for Cutler and he made a move for Anquan Boldin. I think that he will go after a FA WR next year if need be and won't be afraid to spend some of that cap space (if there's even a cap in 2010).
Let's take a look at some of the 2010 FA WRs:
Braylon Edwards (CLE, UFA)
This is a move that probably would not be too popular with the fanbase, but it could turn into a genius move. Even though Braylon led the NFL in drops (16) in 2008, he has 228 receptions for 3558 yards in 58 games, that's an average of 15.6 yards per catch. I really think that a change of scenery would do Braylon some good, he has been surrounded by mediocraty in Cleveland minus the one fluke year that Derek Anderson looked good. I can see it now, Cutler throwing a lob pass Braylon uses his 6'3'' 220 lb. frame to shield the ball from the CB, Touchdown Bears!
Roddy White (ATL, UFA)
He is coming off of one of his best seasons in 2008 which earned him a trip to the Pro Bowl. 88 receptions for 1,382 yards last season with Matt Ryan. If he could have the same type of level with the Chicago Bears we'd finally have a #1 WR.
Miles Austin (DAL, UFA)
Never heard of him huh? that's because Jerry Jones is a fool. You might have heard of him as a return man, but make no mistake, this guy runs crisp routes and has deceptive speed.
Steve Breaston (ARI, RFA)
In 2008 he had 77 receptions for 1,006 yards as a backup. He would not be too expensive, but it would cost a 2nd round pick, it's a classic Angelo move. Breaston is also a beast on special teams, could you imagine using him as a gunner or even the posibility of rotating our return men. We'd have the best return trio in the league with D. Manning, Hester, and Breaston.
Brandon Marshall (DEN, UFA)
This makes the most sense, I don't see Brandon Marshall getting a trade but I do see him wanting to get ouf of Denver after having Orton throw to him and another losing season (is this too soon to say?). Will the Broncos be smart and give him a new contract before he tests FA waters? Nnamdi Asomugha (IMO the best CB in the NFL) said Marshall is "the toughest guy to bring down, one-on-one."
Who knows, this is the NFL, anything can happen. This could make our offense rank top 5, at least on paper.
The Oline is really a question mark right now, but I have high hopes. Let's say the Line is good. that'd leave us with...
QB Cutler
RB Forte
TE Olsen
WR Brandon Marshall
WR Devin Hester
I guess we won't know about our current crop until the season starts, but Bear Down and keep cool!

I like Breaston for the reason you already mentioned
his proficiency on ST. Obviously a good receiver, but doubling down as a quality ST guy makes him worth looking at for sure.

Breaston is not a #1. Everyone is complaining “we don’t have a #1”. That won’t solve anything.

If Boldin ever gets his money from AZ the Cards will let Breaston go, but if the Cards deal Boldin they keep him… I can see someone really overpaying for him on the open market
Maybe Marshall will take a little less to reunite with Cutler?
but I don’t see Angelo signing any of these… partially because I think the group the Bears have will make big strides with Cutler at the helm

as for taking less to reunite with Cutler
I’d be inclined to say no, he wants big money, he’s been playing his butt off. If it’s in the ball park yes, but nothing significant. The only way he’d take several million less is if this next season he does absolutely horrible or if the Bears make a good will contract with him if say he has an injury.

1ST Rodey White / 2ND Breaston
White is the cream of the cream. Breaston is a future star whereever he goes. Take your pick.

i want to agree with you cuz i REALLY like white,
but breaston, to me, falls in that “wes welker” slot kinda’ guy that needs that high-flying O to be successful… i can’t see him as a #1, #2 type kind of guy. plus our WR stable is chock-ful of 6ft guys. miles austin is the one that intrigues me. he has good size and skills, but, JJ seems to have a man-crush on him, so i don’t see him going anywhere.
personally, i voted for edwards. yeah, he had a case of the “dropsies”, but the ends justify the means. he no longe has the “2”, in what i considered to be one of the best “1, 2 punch” combos in the leaue… plus, i’m sure he’s not interested at all in getting out of “staph-ville”!!!

I'm with you Windy
First off it’s nice to see you guys talking about 2 of my Wolverines, I know Edwards had a horrible year last year in terms of drops, but he and White are the best 2 wr’s going into next years free-agent market, Maybe T.O. should be on that list also he is going to get himself chased outta Buffalo but if you guys need a rec that’s going to drop easy passes Braylon has the upside. I don’t see ATL letting go of White not without putting the franchise tag on him first, he’s the first real rec that team has had in almost a decade, and with the addition of Gonzo this year the sky’s the limit on what his stats will be this year. Breaston is a wildcard he could be exactly what you said Windy or he could just be the benefactor of being the #3 with the likes of Fitz and the beast on the wings, you can only double team so many guys on a certain play. Marshall guys is a very good player no doubt him and Cutler fed off of each other last year, do you guys in Chicago really want another “character issue” man coming from Denver on your roster? Marshall has off-field issues in denver whats he going to be like in a city like Chicago where there is alot more to do that just go skiing and make snowball fights.

Who is the first "character issue" man from Denver on our team?
I’m assuming you can’t be speaking of Cutler, unless you are buying into that overblown media b.s. that was spewed after McDoofus alienated his star QB.

Character Issue???
Your statement about Jay’s character comes from being an uninformed magpie of a hometown media that only knows that to justify it’s lack of knowledge ( using only one very slanted side of the story ) slamming/Cutler bashing etc. will soothe the hurt that resulted after the Bronco Org. lied and belittled him. Point the finger at the real character issues ie; Bowlen and McDaniels.

Both sides
Acted very childish. I still don’t understand why your Bears gave up so much for the second best QB in the AFC west though. And if you guys want to start with the pro-bowl thing again, I think we beat that horse to death last week. But then again there must be something in the water in Chicago cause Ditka did the same thing to get 1 rookie RB in N.O. then put him in a dress. Just saying guys.
by davis0169 on Jul 1, 2009 10:45 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
What is the point of saying he is the second best QB in the AFC West? Is that supposed to mean something? First off, I would say Rivers and Cutler are very even. It is almost impossibly to compare stats because each player has different circumstances and teams. You can only judge talent and every team’s scout admits that Cutler has great talent. That is why we traded for him.
Second off, gave up so much? First round draft picks aren’t all the are talked up to be. What round was Tom Brady drafted in?
Basically the arguments against Cutler are all from haters that just want to hate him because Denver was playing games with him. He threw for over 4k yards last year. In his young career he has shown great arm strength, an emerging leader, and a strong locker room presence. Stop hating bro
by brands735 on Jul 2, 2009 3:46 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
You are right
To a point, Cutler HAD to throw the ball thou because the bronco’s went through 100 RB’s last year as we all know. Just kidding about how many ofcourse. It’s as bad as all of the Favre lovers over in the Norsemen who want to argue the Favre points yeah he has all those stats and records but thats cause he was on teams that HAD to throw the ball. And for every Brady there is always going to be a Manning or a Marino. You can never tell how good a QB is going to be unless he fits the system that said team is trying to run. I’m sure that you uys all remember when my Lions use to run the run-n-shoot and we drafted Andre Ware from Houston which also ran the same Offence. He was the worst QB that ever was. I guess I’m just trying to say “that’s why they play the games”.

I think Edwards would work best
I’d most want White, followed by Breston then Edwards but I think Edwards could struggle this year and need to settle for a smaller deal. I still wish he would have fallen to us in the 2005 draft.
by GallopingGhost on Jun 27, 2009 7:43 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
edwards would be the last player i want
the reason edwards drops so many balls is cuz hes lazy and doesnt work hard until his contract year (so he should have a good year this year). no thx

Were are you guys getting that...
I have heard nothing bad about his work ethic ever, from any coach or player he has played with. In fact I remember reading an article, about how during last years break in between OTAs and training camp he and a few ex-Wolverines went and trained with Michigan’s new strength coach Mike Barwis. That kind of runs contrary to your thoughts.
Did you ever think that maybe playing with like 4 different QBs last year might have had something to do with his drop problems, chemistry between QB and WR is needed. Also I don’t understand this whole he drops too many passes, sorry to burst your guys bubble but Brandon Marshall and Roddy White both have major problems with drops as well. TO has problems with drops, and despite all of his off the field issues, you can’t argue that he isn’t one of the most prolific receivers in NFL history. Randy Moss also has drop issues. So IMO looking at drops is useless.

Roddy White
is who I want. He’s the best combination of big ability and small baggage on the list. That’s where I voted. I suppose I screwed that up considering I do not think JA brings him in.
Who I think the Bears bring in would be Steve Breaston. IMO, He will be the best VALUE, a JA trait when it comes to draft picks and FAs.
by rdent4hof on Jun 28, 2009 8:48 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
That's who I voted for.
He’s in the prime of his career, and will only be more of a beast in future years. I can see the Falcons tagging him if they can’t get an extension worked out.

I don’t think Roddy is going to want to leave Matt Ryan. Those two have something real special going on in ATL that will last a while. He’d be stupid to leave ATL.

ya not only would he want to stay
But if he was even considering he would get the franchise tag. I voted for Braylon Edwards because had he got drafted by a team with stability at the QB people would be talking about him being the best reciever in the league. IMO.

long term deals
this is all relative if none of these guys sign deals with their current teams before FA, of course. I see white getting an extension, and edwards and breaston might as well. marshall may or may not, so pickings may be slim, if we even need help next season at WR (i think we’ll be pleasantly surprised with the current core).

I believe that if there is no CBA
which isn’t likely, since it might lead to a strike, then it would only affect new contracts.

well
I like Emmitt Smith and the mock drafts are usually spot on for some teams but then horribly off for others. I think it’s more writer bias than lack of knowledge.

Breaston
I think he is vastly underrated because of Fitz/Boldin. He would be a number 1 on almost any other team. I think if he leaves the cardinals, he is gonna be a pro bowler in no time. He seems to be a better character guy too that you don’t need to worry about cops/laziness. White had a good year, I need to see him follow it up first though.

I actually saw a piece
on NFL Prime Time that was about Breaston. Apparently he is a really really hard worker and has earned everything. He’s also a slam poet which is cool in it’s own right.

I have a different perspective on this, so hear me out.
If (and that’s a big IF) we need WR next year, I’d rather sign Braylon Edwards than any of the guys on the list.
Now, my reason:
Edwards was the #3 overall pick who already got paid big, big bucks on his rookie contract. The other guys on the list, including Roddy White, who was picked 27th overall, are all playing for the biggest contract/signing bonus they’ll ever get. And… well.. we’ve seen guys get that contract and often never play up to that level again. At least Edwards will still be out to prove himself, after a mixed start to his career in Cleveland.
That being said… we may not even be in the market for a WR, if Cutler falls in love with Knox, Bennett, or Iglesias.
