NightLink: Gotta Love the Swagger- Cutler on Elway, Elway on Cutler

Pulling from back when Jay Cutler was a Bronco, an interesting article has some great (and possibly controversial) quotes from our new Gunslinger.  And yes, I capitalized Gunslinger on purpose, because Cutler would want me to, at least based on some of these quotes.

Star-divide

Cutler on his arm vs. John Elway's: "I have a stronger arm than John, hands down. I'll bet on it against anybody's in the league. Brett Favre's got a cannon. But on game days, there's nobody in the league who's going to throw it harder than I am at all."

Cutler on his expectation that the Broncos will score every time they have the ball: "I think we can score 30-plus points a game. I don't see why we couldn't."

Elway on Cutler's arm vs. those of some NFL greats: "Joe Montana, Steve Young, Brett Favre -- they all could get outside and make big plays. Cutler is either more athletic or has better arm strength than each of them. His arm is pretty special, might even be as good as mine when I was his age. Certainly, it's better than mine was at the end."

Elway on comparisons between himself and Cutler: "Some people have asked how he compares to me. He's closer to me physically than personalitywise. But even I struggled a bit with expectations and the Denver spotlight when I was his age. It can be overwhelming. Once he wins some big games, he'll start to feel like he belongs. It didn't happen for me until my fourth year, when we went to Cleveland and won "The Drive" game. It was a big boost for me to win the AFC championship game, especially on the road."

Elway on what's next for Cutler: "Cutler just needs to keep growing. His teammates' confidence in him and the coaches' confidence in his abilities have grown by leaps and bounds this year. It's obvious. Hey, everybody follows a winner. And he's going to win a lot of NFL games."

So this is what having a quarterback is like?

Still feels like something that only happens to other people, doesn’t it?

i like it

it’s not bragging if you can back it up. confidence is the key to performance.

Haha

Well said. I agree 100%. It’s hard to believe that he is going to play for us.

Getting Cutler was like playing Madden and being the GM of the Bears, making some ridiculous trade that in the real world would never happen.

by Skags on Jun 5, 2009 9:43 AM CDT up reply actions

Never agreed

with Cutler saying his arm was stronger than Elway’s. I’m mean who cares who’s is stronger? At that point, it really is a moot point….besides accuracy is more important once it’s known a QB has a NFL arm.

That was nice of Elway to say.

Maybe Jay will send him some cash so he can finally fix his giant horse-teeth. He could have been their mascot if he hadn’t panned out as their QB.

Didnt he lose

4 or 5 before he won one? And its not like Cutler said Elway sucked or something so why would Elway counter with that?

true...

but even elway admitted that it might be as strong… what quote also should also have been in there was elway on cutler leaving:

“I wish it hadn’t come to this,” Elway told the Denver Post.

“I’m disappointed. . . . It’s a sad day for one of the elite franchises in football and all the Broncos fans, and I’m sad.”

That quote couldn't have been in there...

because the article was from last October.

my bad...

thought you were pulling quotes from random/separate articles… never-the-less, it’s an important one.

Cutler sounds like

he is still a young, cocky kid. But hey so far he’s backing it up.

by Sam Householder on Jun 5, 2009 10:56 AM CDT reply actions

Don't get me wrong, I'm excited to have him but

I can’t agree that he’s “backed it up” so far. None of the teams he’s been on in college or the pros have had a winning season with him at QB. I’m not talking about championships, I’m saying not even 1 game over .500. Let’s not get hung up on individual stats here, the name of the game is winning and this is the most important position on the team. Look at the Broncos’ record last year. They were 3 games ahead with 3 to play. I’m not blaming the losses on Cutler at all, but look at his stats in those games. They were very average at best and he threw more interceptions than touchdowns during that span. Like I said, I’m glad we have him and his talent is unquestioned, but I can’t say he’s proven himself yet either. The Broncos were 9-7, 13-3, and 11-5 in Elway’s first 3 seasons, again, I’m not saying Cutler’s teams were as good but the last team with Jake Plummer at the helm was 9-7, so they weren’t the Lions either.

Numbers are numbers are numbers

The question is what you think the reason for them is.

!

by Qgee on Jun 5, 2009 4:22 PM CDT up reply actions

well, i could go with the standard "D sucked" answer, but...

that’s still my answer. when you put that kind of stress on a young QB to have to go out and win every single game because his D can’t hold anybody to under 4 tds(avg28PPG).. . the final 3 games as mentioned above, the D gave up an avg of 37.33 PPG… so what happens??? you start forcing throws, going deep more, abandon the run, etc…. now, put that same quarterback on a team that led the league in first quarter scoring, a solid “run first” offense that just got better(IMO), a stud ultra back like forte. etc… imagine all those games that we were up 10+ PTS only to wind up with a loss… let’s be honest, a 10+ PT lead with a mobile, accurate, rocket arm QB at the helm and all of a sudden, opposing QB are looking alot more like cutler did last year…

Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear.

I like it

So many people made such a big deal about how cocky he is, and all that. The reality is, he is confident in himself and has a certain swagger to him. Both things I feel, you need to really be a great player.

Cutler is a tough guy, bad to the bone with lots of swagger.

Denver wasn’t for him, Chicago is. He will flourish here. We have always been a tough smash mouth team minus the QB, now we have the leader to lead us to our destiny.

Cutler is NO Elway!

This guy couldnt carry Elway’s jock strap in terms of leadership and KNOWING how to win big games. He also has a tendency to think that he can just rifle it in there and it will be great. He has a ton of growing up to do and when he gets upset, well, you will see the true Cutler come out. He is a baby, a talented baby for sure, but still a baby.

(No offense DenverJoe)

Why not? Not to get into a slanging match, but if Denver Joe wants to come to the blog of another team and bitch about their star QB like a lover who’d done him wrong, he’s just asking for trouble.

Personally, I suspect that coming to a team with firmly established leaders already in place will help bring Cutler’s maturity along that much more than if he’d stayed in Denver. He might be a big fish, but this is also a much bigger pond.

"They tried to take out the quarterback, and if they managed that, they tried to take out the backup." - Bears SB20 TE Emery Moorehead, on the mentality of *that* defense

I would refer you to...

Elway’s first couple of years in Denver- Jay Cutler is. at this point in his career, a better QB than Elway was.
