The Chicago Bears Are a Top Five Team in the League for the 2009 Season
The Chicago Bears had many questions concerning the roster and their upcoming 2009 season. The biggest questions are what to expect from Kyle Orton and the quarterback position. Answer: Not much!
In a matter of hours, General Manager Jerry Angelo added two very solid players in Jay Cutler and Orlando Pace.
Giving Up first round draft picks seemed to be a risky move in the NFL news media, however with rocky history with first-round picks like David Terrell, Cedric Benson, Rex Grossman, and Michael Haynes, to name a few, Bears fans all agree it was a god send and the heavens above heard thousands of fans say "thank god, thank you lord." Jay Cutler was a first round pick (11th) overall in 2006 draft by the Denver Broncos.
In 2008 he enjoyed career highs in passing yards (4,526) and 25 Touchdowns and also celebrated a trip to the pro-bowl. Still, there were more problems than just quarterback on this team for the 2009 season.
Now that the QB position will throw mind blowing numbers, and with a upgraded offensive line, Matt Forte can have an outstanding rushing season. The question is who's going to be able to catch the ball?
Receivers Devin Hester, Earl Bennett and Rashied Davis look to be the core of the receiving squad. Not very productive last year would be a huge understatement for this group; however it’s hard to pin that solely on the receivers with Kyle Orton under center. Tight ends Greg Olson and Desmond Clark will return for the 2009 season and both showed improvement at their respected positions. The Bears also signed veteran tight end Michael Gaines to better the tight end play.
Angelo did as much as he could have with the late picks in the 2009 draft. Wide receiver Juaquin Iglesias is going to have to step onto the field as a rookie, and he was a great value pick where the Bears got him.
The 6', 210 pounder, caught 202 passes for 2,821 yards and 19 touchdowns for Oklahoma, including 10 TD’s as a senior. Hehas the potential to compete for a starting position and could develop to the number 3 receiver quickly.
The bears also added speed with Abilene Christian wide receiver, Johnny Knox. Knox ran the third-fastest time in the fastest 40-yard dash at the scouting combine at 4.34 seconds. The Bears must get better at the wide out positions, and will need a leader to step up and be the primary number one receiver.
The Chicago Bears last season ranked fifth in the league, on third down conversions. That key statistic is very important factor coming in to the 2009 season. It shows the offense is productive in high pressure situations, and they can get the job done when needed.
Also, its important to highlight the Bears showed strength last year in three key statistical categories—yards per rush, turnovers and yards per pass. The Bears running game with Matt Forte will be very productive, and if a receiver with open field skills like, Devin Hester finds his role early in the season, this offense can be very explosive.
The Chicago defense may not have given up the big runs or the big passes last season; however they couldn't get off the field at critical times. The Bears focused defensively on draft day, the goal was to infuse the defense with some young talent, General manager Jerry Angelo did that with draft picks, San Jose State defensive lineman Jarron Gilbert in round three.
The Bears will use Gilbert at defensive tackle behind starter Tommie Harris, who has battled an assortment of injuries the past three seasons. Gilbert made 24 college starts at defensive end and 12 at defensive tackle. The Bears also drafted good players late with, Texas defensive end Henry Melton and Vanderbilt corner-back D.J. Moore in Round 4, Ohio State linebacker Marcus Freeman in round five and Oregon State safety Al Afalava in round six.
The Bears blitzed more than any team in the league. Most of them run blitzes to help out a defensive front that couldn't stop the run on its own. The Bears succeeded against the run because they stacked an eighth defender in the box, however they struggled stopping the pass because of it.
The defensive front failed to apply adequate pressure to the QB’s. The addition of Gilbert, who made 21 1/2 sacks for San Jose State, including 9 1/2 his senior year, should help correct that problem. Fortunately they didn't give up the deep ball often because that is what the Tampa-2 stops, however hey did get picked apart by short passing attacks.
The Bears do have outstanding special teams play. Kicker Robbie Gould was outstanding last year missing only three field goals. Key players like Israel Idonije, leading the 3 & 4 man wedges, (that is now banned) and Danieal Manning who had the NFC’s highest kickoff return average of 29.7 yards, gives Chicago a huge advantage for the 2009 season.
This season should feature an exciting division race, with the top three teams in the mix. There is a lot to like about each of their division rivals' drafts. The Packers got two potential starters for their new, 3-4 defense and addressed some of their needs on the offensive line.
The Vikings got one of the true playmakers in this draft, a Caterpillar bulldozer at right tackle, and some solid depth to their defense. The Lions added talent from the top of their draft to the very bottom; though, let's face it, they still have a long way to go.
The Bears have a light schedule statistically, however the season kicks off at Green Bay on primetime television and play week two at home against the defending champion Steelers.
The toughest stretch is from week 10 to week 16, they play at San Fransisco on primetime versus former Bear great Mike Singletary, versus the Eagles on Sunday Night Football, at Minnesota, versus Green Bay, at Baltimore and week 16 at home on Monday Night Football against Adrian Peterson and the Vikings. The Bears play six games against the Lions, Packers and Vikings and will take care of business in the NFC North quickly.
The Bears made a statement with the addition of Pro Bowl QB Jay Cutler, and a decent draft considering they had no first round pick. Orlando Pace should add improved front protection for the O-line. The defense is younger and quicker and improved on the pass rush. I believe the Bears will get off to a fast start this season, due to the light schedule, and because of the talent level of the players on this team.
I see the Chicago Bears winning NFC North division, and have a viable shot of taking the NFC division title. The Chicago Bears are a top five team in the league for the 2009 season, and will be a strong contender for the Lombardi Trophy.

Definate Playoff Team
Da Bears will win the NFC North, but I think that the early part of the season is crucial for them, if Jay and the receivers are on the right page as far as timing and trust the sky is the limit, but if it takes awhile for that it could be a long early part of the season, but I know we are definatly heading in the right direction and we are not far from a Lombardi trophy.

First Two Games....Huge!!
This is why we will beat Greenbay
With every player on the defensive side of the ball learning a new system and new roles, the defense could turn out to a liability. Inexperience could spell disaster especially in the first week against an energized offense led by Jay Cutler, who will be looking to make a statement. Aaron Rodgers will have to compensate and put up huge numbers in week one against the Bears. I don’t expect big numbers from the Packers running attack with Ryan Grant or Brandon Jackson against Chicago ’s improved D-line, and a healthy Brian Urlacker and his outstanding partner in crime, Lance Briggs.
Chicago will win this game, with a balanced offensive attack. Chicago will give up a deep ball for a TD, and special teams will give Packers favorable field position however the Bears will be too much to handle offensively.
This is why we will beat the Steelers
Pittsburgh ’s upper tier defense is no doubt a great one. The addition of Ziggy Hood will allow this defense line to make several plays behind the line of scrimmage. I don’t look for Chicago to have great production from their running game, and the passing game will get a taste of a great secondary that was ranked first in 2008 for the regular season.
Jay Cutler’s ability to scramble will be a key role for Chicago to win this game. If the Steelers keep him contained, and apply pressure the Bears will have a problem winning.
With Chicago winning the field position battle, and the fact it’s the first home game of the season, Chicago wins this game 16-14.
Thanks for reading!!

I can see that.
I agree with you on the Packers, they’re not gonna have the feel of a 3-4 scheme on the first game of the season. As far as the Steelers go, it is gonna be a challenge, and I hope we can win that game, but they have a great defense, who can exploit our young wr’s, if we can win that game, it will say alot about this team.

Just for a bit of perspective
First story on DN – 10 July 2006
First story on WCG – 2 November 2005
I should hope WCG would have more hits, what with the 8-month head start and all.
Then again, after the Vikings’ 2009 NFC North championship, I’m guessing that head start will be negated.

Vikes aren't better then the..
Titans, Falcons, Ravens, or Chargers. The Titans and Falcons beat you guys last year, and the Ravens and Chargers both should only be better this year. I would say you guys are 10-11.
by packallday555 on Jul 12, 2009 7:07 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I put the Chargers and Vikings as pretty equal teams
With a healthy Brett Favre, the Vikings offense will be just as good if not better than the Chargers. The Vikings D and Chargers D will be very good this year, obviously I am giving the nod to the Vikings (I’m a little biased.)
I am fine with putting the Chargers 6 and the Vikings 7.
But no way are the Titans better than the Vikings. They lost Haynesworth. Collins is not a very good QB. They have no WRs. They have a pretty good run game and an above average D.
Falcons… Obviously the Vikings have a better D than the Falcons. I think the Falcon’s offense is really good, and I can see them being top 5 in the league this year. Then again, with teams having a year of footage on Matt Ryan, I can see them being bottom half of the league too. Only time will tell I guess.
Ravens Defense is getting old. And they lost a few key players, including the most important piece to that D, Rex Ryan. Again, teams will have a year of tape on Flacco, so I don’t expect their offense to take anyone by surprise any more.
by PurplePeopleEaters09 on Jul 13, 2009 12:04 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hmm
“But no way are the Titans better than the Vikings. They lost Haynesworth. Collins is not a very good QB. They have no WRs. They have a pretty good run game and an above average D.”
The loss of Haynesworth will hurt, but they did just fine without him last year. Collins is a good QB and he proved that last year. He knows how to manage a game. He is the reason they were so good last year. They didn’t have any wr’s last year, and that didn’t seem to effect their 13-3 season. “Pretty good run game” is an understatement. They had only 140 less rushing yards then you guys did last season, and Chris Johnson is only improving. Their D is very good. They arguably have a top 3 linebacking crew and a pretty good d-line and secondary.
“Then again, with teams having a year of footage on Matt Ryan, I can see them being bottom half of the league too. Only time will tell I guess.”
There is no way in hell an offense with Ryan, Turner, Mughelli, White, and Gonzalez is in the bottom half of the league and you know that. Ryan is only going to improve this season. He will have more freedom in their offense, and more freedom with audibles. Plus, teams will have to concentrate on the run because Turner is so good, so that is only going to help Ryan. They beat you last year and went farther into the playoffs then you guys did. I think for that, and the addition of Gonzalez and Peterson, they have to be ranked ahead of you in a preseason poll.
I guess I could agree on the Ravens. Though I don’t think their D will suffer all that much. Their offense really didn’t take anyone by surprise last year. They just pounded the run, and when teams committed to that Flacco would take advantage of it.
by packallday555 on Jul 13, 2009 2:46 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ever hear of the sophomore slump?
I think it was Bill Belichick who once said that you don’t truly know how good a QB is until teams have a full year’s worth of tape to study. I personally think the Falcons overachieved last season. But we will see this year. If they play well again this year, I will concede the fact that they are a very good team. Until that happens, I will stick with my opinion. As far as the Vikings loss to them last season goes, I like to think of it as the Vikings really gave them that game. Then again, a loss is a loss.

How Naive ....
Two teams from the SAME DIVISION in the top 4 in the league?
Just based on record alone that is a very naive move. If I were going to pick two teams from the same division to be in the top 4 it would have to be either Baltimore and Pittsburgh, or Tennessee and Indianapolis. But even then, I wouldn’t project two teams from the same division to be in the top four, based on record.

I wouldn’t put the bears in the top 5. For that matter no one in th Norris Division should be in the top 8. And who is this playmaker tat they speak of in Minn? I know they are not talking about Harvin a ROOKIE. Not only does he have the rookie issue but the Florida gator issue and that would be that they are all poor NFL players.(offencive side of the ball) How does this guy have the Giants that high on his list? Their rec’s are no better than te Bears or the Vikes rec’s. I know what you guys are going to say but don’t and save your strength, until they prove that they can play it’s just dreaming, just like the Lions are going to win the Division this year. How can you not put the CARDS on that list?
Pending any injuries to Warner, they have morefirepower n the O-side of the ball than any other team in the NFC. Don’t try to tell me that it was a fluke cause Warner has the track record with not needing a D-fence to get to the big dance. And since you"live" in the present and all they are the team to beat in the NFC. That does not make any sense...
