Here we go already....Chicago Bears Charles Tillman out indefinitely after back surgery

Tillman_1_medium

(Promoted FanPost from new member dabayrz.  Article courtesy of the Trib.)

With the two biggest question marks for the Bears being the defensive backfield and wide receivers, any injury to a starter hurts big time.  From Davis Haugh of the Tribune...

Star-divide

One condition of all the optimism accompanying Jay Cutler and the Bears to training camp Thursday was the return of a hungry, healthy defense.

So much for healthy.

The Bears will start practice Friday without starting cornerback Charles Tillman, their most proven defensive back, who will be out indefinitely with a back injury, the Tribune has learned.

Tillman recently underwent an arthroscopic surgical procedure to clean up a disc in his back, a similar condition to one that caused him to miss the final two games of 2006. If the recovery goes well, the Bears expect Tillman to be back in time to play in the final preseason game Sept. 3 so he can see some action before the Sept. 13 season opener.

Still, the uncertain nature of the recovery during training camp will put even more pressure on the Bears' secondary to shore up before facing quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers.

If you go on chicagobears.com,

Tillman says he expects to be back by the season opener. He also said dont panic if he doesnt panic which he isnt. I trust him, just not our health staff.

yes

the best case scenario has him back before the season starts.

i’ve never heard an athlete say they’ll be out past the minimum.

The secondary was already a mess

Take away the best and most vital member and you have a bad situation. The Bears will go only so far as their defense can take them, with or without Jay Cutler. Last year’s defense was wretched, and until proven otherwise in 2009 you have to be realistic about matters.

Losing Tillman sucks big time.

Cubs will win 79 to 83 games. Season has been over for weeks. St. Louis will eventually run away with this division. And you can print it. BLou (7/21/09)

definitely bad news...

But he’s not lost, just misses some practice time which isn’t as huge of a deal for someone who’s been around. Hopefully no lingering effects though.

by Ando on Jul 27, 2009 9:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Great catch dabayrz...

Honestly, I see this as an opportunity to get Moore, Bowman, and Graham on the field during training camp and get each of them some serious quality time. I am comfortable that Tillman will be a go by the season opener and I am not worried about CB depth at all. Now, can the Bears just get a FS for fu@ks sake!

BLou, don’t be so worried.

He might be back by Sept 3rd,

honestly though, he’ll probably miss the first two reg season games and then play in a limited capacity until week 6. Just my opinion.

I hope this doesn’t lead to another shuffle of players, graham should stay at FS if they feel he’s the best fit there. I think we may end up getting a FA depending on how things go. How do yo feel about Bowman, Vasher (Alert! risk! risk!), Hamilton (I still haven’t forgiven him for the ATL Breakdown) and DJ Moore (rookie, prob get eaten alive, but has major potential). I don’t feel very good.

We’ll have to see how his rehab goes, but I wouldn’t mind bringing in someone, who? I don’t know, for whoever suggested Ken Lucas he signed with the Seahawks; hopefully we can get some decent camp casualties.

are you sure about that?

i’m not panicking but he might be approaching the mike brown level. hasn’t he already had back trouble? right shoulder, left shoulder, knee, more back. i think the depth is OK this year but another CB in the draft next year would be a good idea.

by genetic on Jul 28, 2009 9:14 AM CDT up reply actions

“another CB in the draft next year would be a good idea.” Absolutely it would.

We could move Tillman to FS and then move Graham back ….. to…… or we should move Manning…..Ah crap! Never mind.

by rdent4hof on Jul 28, 2009 9:21 AM CDT up reply actions

According to Briggs Bears blog
Tillman underwent surgery performed by Dr. Robert Watkins two weeks ago in Los Angeles. He was given a timetable of six to 12 weeks for a return to the field. Six weeks would put Tillman back on the field right around the final preseason game Sept. 3 vs. Cleveland…..The outside range for a return would mean Tillman would miss at least the first three regular-season games. He’ll have to be removed from the PUP list before the Sept. 5 roster cutdown to 53 or else he would wind up missing a minimum of six weeks of the regular season.

Guess we will see and have to hope that Tillman can recover by week 1 of the reg season….

This doesnt bother me much...

If he just misses training camp and part of the preseason, its no big deal, we already knew he would start and, last year, he missed training camp as well.

The way I see it is this.

A) Gives valuable playing time to either Bowman or Moore with the starting offense, and
B) At least its a preventative surgery now, in the preseason, and not a season ending surgery during the season when the backup does NOT have some reps with the first team.

by jbeks on Jul 27, 2009 10:48 PM CDT reply actions

I wish the injury had happened in our receiving corp on the other side of the ball. Sounds weird but,

This injury will force Lovie to move up a rookie or second year player into potential starting roles during training camp. This could have become more of a positive thing if this had happened on the other side of the ball forcing us to see inexperienced player get starting time at wide receiver early on. As is, this is a huge set back to an already thin secondary. Plus this will f up the safety position even more. Big question is why didn’t this come out sooner?? You find this out 4 days before training camp? Great job Bears staff and physicians.

If you can't laugh at yourself you must not be very funny.

he had the surgery two weeks ago so they’ve known for at least three. seeing as how he wasn’t really practicing because of the shoulder surgery it was probably hard to tell if the back was going to be a real issue until then.

Bad secondary gets worse

the Bears have always stopped the run while conceding the pass. Secondary is and will be continue to be this team’s weak link… As always the Bears have hedged their bets on getting to the QB before he can move his arm fast enough to throw to the open receivers.

Graham was supposed to be competing with Vasher who has been slipping and is definitely underplaying his contract. Now by default both starting CBs are guys that the Bears themselves have basically acknowledged are not currently worthy of starting to begin with.

thank you

once again, no big deal

Peyton Manning missed Training camp and preseason last year, and still won league MVP. I know I’m comparing apples to oranges, but still, the message I’m trying to convey is every team goes through players more important than Tillman sitting out until the start of the regular season.

We have depth at cornerback with a healthy Vasher, Corey Graham, a steadily improving Trumaine McBride, and a draft steal in DJ Moore.

I. Ain’t. Scurred.

Moore is just a rookie, but Bowman may be ready to step in if needed and pick up the slack immediately.

I assume he was trying to alternative treatment so he would not need surgery

When those failed to fix the problem, he was left with surgery and missing a chunk of the season.

As others have pointed out, this is an opportunity for someone to step up and show he is ready. Tillman getting injured is becoming an annual event and it sure looks like his career is winding down. Time for the team to find out who is ready to step up.

Tillman

Who wants to bet Vasher wont be far behind? These soft corners are killing us yearly!

by Shaun L on Jul 28, 2009 8:21 AM CDT reply actions

This throws the 53-man roster out of whack.

Last year the Bears kept 10 DB’s coming into the season: (Vasher, Tillman, McBride, Graham, Steltz, Brown, Payne, Manning, Bowman and McGowan)

Tillman could be put on the PUP list and be inactive for the 1st 6 games to free up a roster spot if he’s not going to be healthy. However, if he will be able to play sooner than that, the Bears will no doubt have to keep an extra player as a DB to guard against further injury or ineffective play while hurt. I think this might signal the Corey Graham to FS experiment over. The CB’s will have to be: Tillman, Vasher, Moore, Bowman, McBride, and Graham. The S’s will be: Steltz, Payne, Manning, Bullocks or Afalava or Earl. I just don’t think they can keep 11 defensive backs, but you never know.

Anyway its a mess, by having to keep 10 db’s on the roster, the Bear’s will lose the flexibility of keeping 7 linebackers or 10 d-lineman. They’ll have to go 6 LB’s (Urlacher, Briggs, Pisa, Williams, Roach, & Freeman) and 9 DL (Anthony Adams, Harris, Ogunleye, Brown, Harrison, Idonije, Anderson, Gilbert, and Melton) cya Toeana and Dvoracek or if Melton doesn’t cut it, they keep Dusty for DT insurance.

even if...

he is out for an extended period of time that forces him to miss games IT MAY cause management to move Graham back to corner ending his DMS. i am not worried. we have some depth i have faith in Bowman, Graham, Moore, McBride…i like our depth at DT as well..hell i just love the bears

He waits until now

My question is, why in the hell did he wait until now 4 days before the start of training camp to have the surgery? Did his back just all of a sudden get hurt!? Why was the surgery not done a few weeks after the end of the season back in January? All of training camp gone, now Tillman will have a single preseason game to get in “game” shape if he’s lucky, and you know GB is going to be throwing like mad at his side of the field Opening night. This is beyond stupid this is f***king stupid!
