Danieal Manning to start at FS

Danieal Manning has been announced as the starting free safety for training camp on the team's website.

The article says that he impressed the Bears brass with his work at nickel back (even when he was torched by Andre Johnson?)

It also says that the move is unrelated with the loss of Tillman to a back injury

Kevin Payne is slated as the starting strong safety and Craig Steltz will replace Manning at FS on nickel defense, while Manning slides over to nickel back

The article is laced with Lovie-isms.

I am not sure about this, then again I am not sure about Steltz starting at FS either.

(Note: the article says that Steltz will challenge Kevin Payne for the SS position.  Steltz is a true SS, so this should be an interesting development during camp)

All I have to say is Wow!

I really can’t believe Lovie is moving him around again. Hopefully, he takes better angles to the ballcarrier and can diagnose deep pass plays.

SamuraiMike- can you insert a direct link? Use the “chain” feature when you put the address in. Thanks.

If this means Graham is back to cornerback...

Suddenly corner is one of the deepest positions on the team, with the emergence of Bowman and Graham. Not to mention McBride and the rookie, DJ Moore.

Yeah

hopefully it carries over to our safeties.

maybe had he stayed there

the last few years he’d be a better one now.

steltz playing free? sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

this sort of sounds like a bs setup hoping for someone to step up in camp, either at nickel or fs.

agree regarding Steltz at FS

I am not convinced he would be much of a SS let alone a FS … too slooooow.

Whatever.

85% odds this will change in two weeks.

2-3 changes in the first 2 weeks!

Ugh

watching Game of the Weeks from seasons past Manning was always blowing assignments when playing FS……

but whatever….SackMan is probably right and this will change in 2 weeks as Lovie has changed starting free safeties 16 times since he was hired in 2004, and swapped out starting strong safeties 14 times…..

here's hoping this isn't true

Manning was a disaster at FS. Stick him at nickel and stop messing around.

DMS....

make the guy learn and play two positions..that is REAL smart. put him at one and keep him there for crying out loud.

Yeah, this is a guy who wasn't smart enough to play ball at Oklahoma.

I repeat, not smart enough to play at Oklahoma. I don’t think you want to put a whole lot on his plate. At least the CB experiment is over. For now.

Not just torched by Johnson, but EVERYONE ELSE

I don’t like this one bit. I agree with SackMan that this will probably change, but after seeing Peanut is going to miss some time the last thing I want is Manning poisoning the secondary more than he has already. Stick to kick returns, eh?

Rumor has it Alex Brown keeps Chris Simms' right index finger in his back pocket for good luck.

i don't know if

the recent chain of events in our secondary is what has me ’REALLY PISSED" about this move or what, but i hope manning scored a perfect 50 on his wunderlich, or has a 160 I.Q…. is it me, or was i ALOT MORE EXCITED about training camp just 2 whole days ago???

Should we be worried about the overall experience of the secondary w/ Bowman at corner:

As a reward for Bowman’s performance during offseason practices, the 2008 fifth-round draft pick will open training camp with the No. 1 defense at cornerback opposite Vasher. Bowman secured a win over the Vikings with a late interception in his only game as a rookie last year and then led the Bears with seven interceptions in OTA workouts.

Actually, I really like our depth in the secondary. I guess I’m just wondering if veteran leadership will be either an issue or a non-factor. I wasn’t one objecting to the Mike Brown departure. I could see a line up of Bowman, Graham, Payne and Steltz/McBride on the field at one time. I don’t know if it matters…. (btw, Tillman is old man winter in the secondary with 7 years…)

by EvilKaramazov on Jul 30, 2009 12:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks for the info

but, sooooo much can happen, in the coming weeks. This just the beginning. I’m just glad that there is real news to talk about.

And if Manning wins the job at camp, than so be it. What’s the next best thing, SS Steltz as a FS or maybe CB Graham as a FS. The position has been a cluster F*** for a while now and I anticipate many more stories relating to this one.

by rdent4hof on Jul 29, 2009 12:05 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

but remember last year orton won the qb battle

and we all were like WHAT!!! But he actually was pretty good(except on the long balls).

Getting tutored by the Head Coach himself

has to have made progress on technique and football knowledge in general. I like him playing Free instead of Stelz who isn’t fast enough.

The one problem that I can see is now that we have our starting FS and #1 WR playing KR and PR…dangerous waters we walk….

We need another draft…

WOW!

No question he has the athleticism to play FS, I just hope his football IQ and instincts have improved

Finally, some one at free safety who makes sense

With all due respect to Steltz, he’s got good instincts and is a decent ball-hawk, but he is definately suited to play SS – not FS. Manning has better range and has been in the system for 3 years, now, so he should know what he’s doing out there.

by JimmyMack on Jul 29, 2009 1:44 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Manning has the best all round package of any of our DB's

He just has not figured out how to put it all together. I am sure getting jerked from position to position has not helped at all. I also have too many bad memories of him missing tackles (AP comes to mind). However, if he can put it together, I think that he has the skills to be one of the better FS in the league.

by sheepskinz1 on Jul 29, 2009 2:18 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Hmmm, okay..

I just hope all this offseason hype about Zack Bowman’s INTs is justified. THAT would be a boost for our D!

by Mathias-K on Jul 29, 2009 2:22 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Big Mistake

Manning consitently takes bad angles at full speed. How many double moves and post dig routes do lovie have to see victimize him. Damn! Solid safety play could be the key to containing AP this year. We cant afford to drop the ball on this one

At least he has experience.

Rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic

Danieal Manning starting at FS is a trainwreck waiting to happen. But then again the alternative was Craig Steltz.

The defensive backfield shapes up to be U.G.L.Y.

Cubs will win 79 to 83 games. Season has been over for weeks. St. Louis will eventually run away with this division. And you can print it. BLou (7/21/09)

by BLou on Jul 29, 2009 6:59 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Let's see how it goes

He’s an athlete. He’s got experience now. If the staff can coach him up during camp, maybe he comes out and plays with better instinct.

It’s been a while, but I seem to remember writers saying that Otis Wilson didn’t have the instincts to be a great linebacker when he was roughly at this point in his career. Then the light went on and he was a Pro Bowler.

Manning has better physical tools than anyone else in the FS picture. It’s worth an early look.

And the prevailing wind happens to be blowing from Vichy.

by xarker on Jul 29, 2009 10:51 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

It Worked Before............NOT!

I was hoping the Bears would just use Danieal Manning in the Nickle package and running back kicks. It seems everytime we find a guy that can run them back 100 yards Lovie want to expand their role. Look what happened to Hester? It could be argued that just leaving Hester in the role of kick returner might have made the Bears a better team last year. I understand what they did and why they did it but I’m just saying.

by Gesiakob on Jul 30, 2009 12:29 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Question...

“Manning will line up as the Bears’ starting free safety and then move to the nickel spot in passing situations.”

It seems to me that swapping FS’s in and out of the line-up would hurt the defense eventually. It isn’t like sending a guy into the DL rotation. I would think the secondary needs chemistry to be effective.

Hopefully, we’ll see more INTs with Bowman getting a shot. I love that our secondary creates alot of fumbles, but I’d also love to see more INTs!

I really thought everything was looking better in the secondary just two days ago. Now it seems like Tillman could actually miss games. What the Heck???

At least we’ll be able to play an 8-3 formation during 4 games (2 vs Minn & 2 vs DET)! Unless #4 re-unretires withour re-re-retiring… …nevermind…

quit yer bitchin'

jesus, people. everyone calm down. didn’t we all hear that the experiment with graham moving to FS was to get the most talent on the field? obviously the coaching staff didn’t feel like he was going to fit there. i sure as hell don’t back everything lovie does but he is there watching every day, you’re not. manning puts the most talent on the field, i don’t think anyone can question that. add hoke to the equation, he is supposed to be an excellent DB coach, let him do his job.

but what about all this moving around? come on, training camp and preseason probably consists of manning manning (haha) the FS position for what, at least 30 hours of action? add the hours of film and study time, especially with the new coach in there. i don’t care how stupid you are, that’s got to be enough time to get it. if it doesn’t work, fine but it’s worth a shot. worst case, they have to go back to steltz. everyone talks about how smart he is, he should be able to step right back in without missing a beat from where we were yesterday.

why the hell not?

by genetic on Jul 30, 2009 7:42 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Tillman's injury forces Graham to remain at CB

so that leaves DManning as the most experienced FS candidate.

Maybe if

just once they would draft a free safety, and not draft guys that can supposedly play either position, but really can only play strong safety, they wouldn’t be scramling to put square pegs in all the time.

Manning is not a free safety. He cost us a super bowl and a playoff berth playing there. This really pisses me off.

Rashad Johnson was rated a 3rd-rounder, possibly low 2nd-round; if memory serves, the top safety prospects this year (Chung, Delmas) were strong safeties. His scouting report made him sound “VERY similar to Mike Brown”, according to Acreman – not the quickest, but a natural ballhawk who quarterbacks for the defense. I was hoping we would see if he could upgrade our FS position, instead of trying to convert one of our numerous SSes, but we went for someone who can jump out of a pool instead. The Cardinals drafted him.
