Tommie Harris Reveals He Had Surgery In March
Wonder why Tommie Harris has been mostly immobile during camp? Wonder no more... he had knee surgery in March.
He's all suited up with nothing to do on the sideline because he's coming off knee surgery and has a hamstring injury. Perhaps tired of dealing with inquiries wondering why he has not been on the field for a week, Harris revealed that he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his bothersome left knee in March. The procedure was done in order to see why it has continued to plague him, and the good news is he said they found on scar tissue. Harris originally had arthroscopic surgery on the knee in January 2008, six months before his $40 million, four-year contract extension.
"I had surgery in March so I didn't get a chance to do a lot of stuff that the teammates were doing, so they're far ahead of me so I'm really just starting to catch up,'' Harris said. "I would love to be out there, but I do so much in the weight room and all the training and all the other stuff that you guys don't see. The hardest thing is, knowing how political this business is, and having to wear pads and sit on the sideline acting like I'm going out there and different stuff like that, but it's a bit frustrating but I'm going to hang in there and just see how it plays out."
"I have confidence in myself -- a lot, in my knee, my whole body. I've been playing on one leg and everything. I can play this game, I have confidence. It's a mentality, and that's the hardest thing to go out there and to know, to get your mind ready for a practice or different things that you're used to just going out and having fun. I'm just hanging in there.''

This is so typical of the Lovie Smith era
Not a word of this before now — not during OTAs, the pressers to open camp, or the entire first week of practice. Why the big secret? What are they afraid of if they just tell people he had surgery and is sitting out as a result?
By acting the way they have, they have guaranteed this will be a much bigger story than if they just issued the “routine procedure” press release in the offseason when it actually happened.
He's not coming back.
Hate to say it, Tommie was unbelievable for a short time, but I just don’t see how he is going to make it back. He can have all the confidence in the world in himself, really that’s good.
An under-tackle can not play on one leg. Just not going to happen.
I dont see anything wrong with having a scope done. Its just a checkup. I think hes going to perform much better this season.
That's very naive
If there was nothing wrong… they wouldn’t have been concealing it this far along… and he’d be practicing as often as everyone else.

HAving a scope to clean out scar tissue
isn’t that big of a deal. However, the fact that he’s still not practicing almost five months later concerns me. It may sound strange, but I’m almost comforted by the fact that he had an injury. That at least means he’s not just being a lazy prick like a lot of us have been thinking.

Still..
Gotta admit that’s impressive that they kept the whole thing covered for this long without a single leak. Plus on the bright side, this means Tommie will have 2 legs to destroy offensive lines with this year instead of just one.
It is an impressive cover-up.
Remember when Urlacher tried to have that surgery on the sly? The media had that sniffed out in under a day.
Kudos to Zach Zaidman
For prying for answers.
Also… other news of the day: Rookie Al Afalava is moving up the chart fast. He’s working with the 1st team defense now at nickel. For those keeping count, Craig Steltz has now lost the starting FS spot, and the nickel spot.
Devin Aromashodu is actually receiving mentions from Lovie Smith at WR. Johnny Knox is only being asked to learn the X slot, apparently the Bears have learned from last year, when they asked Bennett to learn all 3.
One pro-bowl veteran, who shall go un-named, compared rookie DT Jarron Gilbert to Richard Seymour. And Gilbert has been starting to flash his talent in practice.

Guess I wasn’t keeping count. I thought manning was starting FS and Nickel.

Steltz was the starting FS prior to the Manning switch.
And, I have to correct myself… per the reports so far, it’s unclear if Al Afalava is playing FS or Nickel. But, he’s on the 1st team nickel D right now. And was taking snaps on the 1st team goal line D package as well.
Per Zach Zaidman, Afalava spent the remainder of his final college semester (through June), on the phone everyday with DB coach Gill Byrd, learning the playbook. Afalava wasn’t allowed to participate in mini-caps and OTAs because of an NCAA rule that applies to Oregon State and other schools who don’t finish till June.

correct me if I'm wrong
but I could’ve sworn the plan was to have Manning Start at FS, then slide him to Nickel and move steltz to FS during Nickel situations.
I never recalled anything about steltz playing nickel.
I’m trying to figure out does that mean Afalava is playing FS exclusively or is he taking steltz’s role.

Yes...
When training camp kicks off Friday with a 3 p.m. practice in Bourbonnais, Manning will line up as the Bears’ starting free safety and then move to the nickel spot in passing situations.
Kevin Payne will open training camp as the starting strong safety, while Craig Steltz will challenge for Payne’s job and replace Manning at free safety in the nickel defense.
However, now Steltz isn’t even on the field in Nickel packages… it’s Manning and Afalava. So, in correction: he’s now lost the starting FS spot, and the Nickel FS spot.

Rookie Al Afalava is moving up the chart fast. He’s working with the 1st team defense now at nickel.
I kind of thought Afalava would be a real “sleeper” for the Bears defense. I never really understood, well besides a minor character issue, why he dropped so far in the draft. He’s got good speed, ball skills, and obviously the tackling ability to thrive as a SS or FS.

I do remember you regularly mentioning
Afalava. Screw it. Boast! He is much more athletic than I thought. Impressive propheteer.
I’ve been driving the Rideau band wagon since I got to WCG. And predicted weeks ago, that only Hester would have more receiving TDs than Rideau (excluding TEs).
Quote of the day
It’s good to finally play with a pretty good QB. If you look at my career and my stats in the 11 years I’ve been in the NFL I think I’ve had 20 different starting QBs.

Really getting somewhat sick of the Bears' MO
They either lie about it completely (Chris Williams) or just don’t tell anyone (Peanut, Tommie Harris).
Speaking of Tommie, I’m still not giving him a pass. He sat out of practice a lot, so this isn’t a new thing I’m going after him for.
What a complete damn joke.
I'M A MAN! I'M 23!
Was Chris Williams a complete lie?
The Bears said his back injury last year was unrelated to the one in college. But for Tommie, we’ll know week 1 whether he can go this year or not…

Yeah, yeah
And you buy that about C. Will?
Regardless, Lovie said that C-Will wasn’t hurt; C-Will didn’t get the memo and told the reporters he was. That’s how it all began, and in my world, that constitutes a lie.
I'M A MAN! I'M 23!
WCG, where we think the Bears would even lie about Stephanie from Wisconsin losing all that weight!!!!
I know, it really doesn’t have a lot to do with this but, it’s been a long time since her name came up.
I don't understand why anyone is getting so bent out of shape about the secrecy issue
Will Tommie Harris’s knees heal if the public knew about the injuries? what about Tillman’s shoulder? or William’s back? in essence, It’s all league strategy. every team does it. The Bears are not different from any other team, the Chicago media just leads you to believe that they are.
When Brandon Lloyd went down, Turner(who lobbied to bring him to the Bears in the first place) and Smith expected him to be back on the field by constantly saying “he’s good to go”. But Lloyd, who’d rather focus on a shitty music career, kept deciding to miss games because HE felt the he wasn’t “good to go”.
That situation and the Chris Williams situation go hand in hand. The Coach(Lovie) expects his best players out on the field ready to compete. but when they bitch about soreness, what can the coach do? drag him out to the field by way of shackles?
I’m not saying Smith didn’t lie, but Smith is not a doctor, he’s a coach. And I’m not going to even guess as to what goes on behind the scenes. there’s one thing I know though. Williams was known in college to have a tendency to be a slacker. so just take that for what it’s worth.

Well
Will Tommie Harris’s knees heal if the public knew about the injuries? what about Tillman’s shoulder? or William’s back?
No. But why withhold the information? What do the Bears gain from it? Not a damn thing. As propheteer said, tell the truth early. It’ll sting initially, but much less than if you withhold that information. If they were gaining something from it, then I’d understand. But they’re not. That’s just the simple truth.
in essence, It’s all league strategy. every team does it. The Bears are not different from any other team, the Chicago media just leads you to believe that they are.
Oh, they are different. They suck at doing it. Other teams are able to keep that information in-house. The Bears can’t.
I'M A MAN! I'M 23!
Not true
the truth comes out eventually. but, Chicago’s media market is a different type of beast from a Buffalo market. and with guy’s like Mike Florio, who has connections to several different league insiders, it’s hard to contain the truth.
why withhold the information? What do the Bears gain from it? Not a damn thing
well, if the player’s injuries are out in the open, it makes the player’s injury a target. put yourself in the coaches shoes. Would you think it would be a smart decision to openly blurt out injury concerns to the whole world? might as well throw in playbook secrets as well.

I agree
I never really understood the outrage over staying mum on an injury. The only reason there is an injury list in the NFL anyway is for the bookies.

And to add to that
teams have zero responsibility to inform the general public of injuries, rehabs, etc. They have a responsibility to keep everyone who needs to know in the know.
Sure, as fans, we want to know everything we can get our hands on, but when it boils down to it, a team’s strategy typically won’t include informing the general public. And note, I said typically, not always.

What?
That makes no sense.
if the player’s injuries are out in the open, it makes the player’s injury a target.
In training camp? What? It doesn’t make him a damn target. If Tommie’s injured, say he’s injured. Don’t say “Tommie’s ok” and make it seem like everything’s terrific.
I'M A MAN! I'M 23!
What? I was talking about the regular season
not training camp. we saw it last year with the Brady injury. not only can opposing teams go after the injured limb, but they can draw up plays to take advantage of the injured player. It’s all about not giving the other team any advantages at all.

So....
you’re saying that we saw that last year with the Brady injury, which means the Chiefs drew up a play so Bernard Pollard could tear Brady’s ACL? Chalk me up as confused.
Regardless, I really don’t care; personally, I don’t need the information. None of us do. BUT, from a public relations standpoint, this is another nightmare for the Bears. Essentially, it tells us not to trust a damn word they say.
I'M A MAN! I'M 23!
exactly my sentiments right now...
it’s one thing to withhold info, it’s another to just flat out completely lie about a situation. look at belichick, he’s the master at saying absolutely nothing at all, cowher was good at it too, tomlin is the same way, coughlin, on and on… not cool at all lovie… not cool at all!!!
Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear.
welcome to the world of sports
Would you trust anything Jerry Reinsdorf, Kenny Williams, or john Paxon would say? the Bears front office isn’t so different. the real difference is that they’ve made mistake after mistake and tried to cover it up. that’s where the real dishonesty lies.
I think the reason why Bears fans get upset about it is because Angelo and Lovie have abused the trust of the fans.
From Angelo using day 1 picks to draft players who already had durability issues (Tommie Harris, Mark Bradley, Chris Williams) to Lovie kicking out Rivera and replacing him with Babich.
Then let’s not forget Okwo, Bazuin, Archuleta, and Darwin Walker. the Cedric Benson/Thomas jones Fiasco, the Tank Johnson saga, Lance Briggs proclaiming to never come back to the bears, and Urlacher threatening to hold out. All were not handled well by Jerry and Lovie.

League strategy?
Curious to know what tactical advantage they gained from waiting until before the first preseason game to release this. Every team in the league knows it plenty of time in advance of the games that count.
Maybe I could see the argument that it was wise to conceal this before the draft, so teams wouldn’t sniff out that we were looking at someone like Gilbert. But that was months ago, no reason to hide it this long. Public has a right to know what they’re paying for.

What exactly are we paying for? Injury prone players to become even more injured because because the “paying public” had to know the truth? Like I said before, it’s not going to heal Harris if everybody knew what was going on, so why does it matter?

I’m not sure what the harm is in disclosing this information, especially when talking about Harris’ knee(s). No media outlet, nor fans would have chastised Lovie or the organization for coming clean on this issue.

Oh, we'd do awesome work
I just don’t get it. Any fan with half a brain could see that something was wrong last year when he sat out constantly from practice. Regardless of whether or not it was just scar tissue, it seems as though Tommie has the knees of an 80-year-old.
I'M A MAN! I'M 23!
Handled very poorly
Hopefully it was just scar tissue. They’re probably just lying to us again. Maybe Tommie doesn’t have an ACL, or has no cartilage left in his knee.

I don't like it, but it's far from unusual.
It seems to be a big game amongst teams to see who can lie about player status the best. I almost think the NFL should just do away with the mandatory injury list since most teams just make a sham of it anyways.

Don't write him off yet.
the good news is he said they found on scar tissue.
I’m assuming it was quoted as saying “only” scar tissue. If it’s true he was only playing on one leg, look for Tommie to dominate again this year (barring another injury of course).

Tommie Harris is a shadow of his former too brief very good self
At some point very soon you either get him to renegotiate his ridiculous contract or you cut him.
The defense really does appear to be a clusterfu*k. Good luck to Lovie, Marinelli and Babich sorting through a dubious defensive line and secondary situation.

Another one bites the dust.
If Mike Brown and Harris could’ve stayed healthy the sky was the limit with this defense.
I wrote about this on a fanpost poll i did called "Same Old Story Same Old Song and Dance"
I wrote on June 17th (maybe the day he got the scope, who knows) that I thought it was very telling that they drafted a DT with the 1st pick and not a WR (which was our biggest need) and that statement couldn’t hold any more true than it does today. Only 46 people felt the need to vote on it and Tommie Returning to Pro Bowl Form won out, thats pretty interesting cause I bet if I reposted it Bring On Jarron Gilbert would win out now. But people tend to overlook things during the off season. Everyone wants to be on cloud 9 and forget about all the knee problems hes had in June I guess.
I thought that it was funny nobody really had any comments (only 6) on one of the most important and controversial players on our defense. And now looky here everyones up in arms about Tommie Harris, not so confident about this former Pro Bowler now huh. Hate to say I told you so. But, thats exactly what Im doing.

I have so little faith in anything Lovie says anyway. It’s one thing to stick by Rex Grossman even though he was failing miserably at the end of the 2006 season. To outright “forget” to mention how the centerpiece of his defense had surgery means he had something to hide. I am not as convinced as you are that Harris is done for, but I hope Gilbert is ready, because I know Harris cannot last for the whole 16-game season and the playoffs.

Saw the difference at Camp Today.
I was at camp today, and before seeing this report, notice a limp in Harris’ walk. The injury bug that is hitting the defense already is not good for the Bears. Tillman look fine. He didn’t workout but saw no signs of pain while he played around the QBs and toss the ball around. But Harris is a different beast. He’s the key that starts this defense and he has had too many surgeries as of late. Hopefully, he’ll be ready by the season open, but that’s not good probably, because Harris hasn’t practice with the team all offseason and preseason.
I hope this doesnt affect
his play too much this year, we need him

Info to the Public
I don’t care about the Bears PR policy. The only thing I care about is will the guy be ready to go at the start of the season. and that answer is likely, not. Lovie might have to shut this guy down until week 2 or 4. Luckily it is a good sign that Tommie is doing individual drills and suiting up. Me as a fan, I will love to go into the season with all people healthy, but that’s always unreal. So hopefully some else on that line is ready to step it up, unlike last season. that’s are next best option.
I'm gonna say this, and probably get hammered for it.
But, if you want to get maximum value from Tommie Harris… then make him a rotational player.
He’s proven over the last two seasons that he’s not healthy enough to be an impact player for 3 consecutive downs.

Rotate him, and keep him fresh for the downs that matter most in a football game: 3rd down and the 4th quarter.

Wouldn't surprise me a bit
to see Harris play 75% of defensive snaps. The coaching staff will know whether he is good to go… if Harris is 75%, he can still beat a lot of OGs/ OTs in the league. But no way do they leave him on the field if he ain’t 100%.

This defense has problems aplenty
Tommie Harris was going to be the key to a defensive line improvement. Well, he continues to prove that his best days (very brief though they were) are in the rearview mirror. The d-line and the secondary are a clusterfu*k.
And oh yeah, Craig Steltz is proving he is useless and does not deserve making this roster.

But we really don’t have anyone else back there.

the Scar Tissue
was cleaned up, hopefully that’s all it was, getting the scope is no big deal these days. And regarding him rotating, he always has and he will again this year, I doubt he approaches 75% of the snaps. And that’s OK.
