Dammit. How can a city as great as Chicago

consistently have awful hacks for their sportswriters. Not all of ’em obviously, but most.

I refuse to read his column

It’s pure, negative dribble. Every big city needs one of them to drive a fanbase crazy. Our national one is none other then KC Joyner. The more I read his stuff, the more I get annoyed. He definitely has some sort of grudge against Cutler and the Bears.

Morrissey's grasping at straws

The argument that because jay cutler has only been to one probowl, comparing that to marty bookers 1 probowl in 2002 is ridiculous. Jay cutler was in the probowl last year, and marty booker deserved to go when he went but his play has diminished since, I’m sure when he did go the next season people referred to him as probowl wr marty booker, which he deserved. This just shows that morrissey has already reached the bottom of the well when he looking for reasons to bash the bears. I;m sure next he is going to point out how dante hall proves with out a doubt hester isnt going to succeed. please.

Morissey plays a character.

His job is to get folks riled up and bring traffic to their site, which I reckon is what all MSM pundits are for. He just gets hammered because he plays the “negative persona” in the local media.

Every outlet has one, and he is good at what he is supposed to do.

That's not close to true

Show me that person for the Sun-Times and Daily Herald.

It used to be Marriotti and to a lesser extent Telender for the Sun Times

the closest in the Daily Herald are Rozner and Imrem but neither are as “good at it” as Morrissey.

by BearFan611 on Aug 11, 2009 7:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Exactly...

There are always “characters” that have the sole purpose of riling up the fans, and Morrissey is great at it. He probably gets paid well for what he does.

And on a side note, it looks like Mariotti may be headed back to Chicago once his non-compete expires at the end of August.

Yeah, I heard the Mariotti thing awhile back

but then it died out for awhile. And the Trib/ChicagoNOW becomes that much more unreadable.

Nothing quoteworthy.

It’s been mentioned by Dolan a couple times over on Desipio. Might have been on HJE too, but I’m not sure. I don’t follow Chicago papers closely anymore, but I guess I just assumed the rumors were around everywhere. And again, the assumption cliche proves itself true.

I have been getting a different take on his Cutler articles

Over the years I’ve never liked the writing style of Morrissey and find him way off base on a lot of subjects, but it seems to me that the approach he’s taking here isn’t so much bashing Cutler as he is bashing the rest of the media and fans for being too over the top in their adoration and expectations. He even says in the article that he has them improving to 10-6 so I don’t get the feeling he’s all doom and gloom.

You can argue about his style as a writer, which I agree with GeauxBears is someone who wants to stir the pot, but in this case I don’t disagree with his position. He always says the Bears have a bigtime QB for the first time in years, when describing Cutler, and his criticism is rarely of the player and more of the people that have done everything but nominate him for sainthood before he’s even had a chance to perform. I and a few people here have been saying similar things since the trade, granted not as pointedly but then we’re not getting paid to elicit responses from the masses.

I might be wrong, but I really think the essence of what he’s saying is enjoy sensibly and give Cutler a chance to show what he can do. Let’s not set the bar so incredibly high that we almost force him to fail because no one could possibly live up to the expectations we might be setting.

Just a sidenote, regarding the whole ProBowl QB reference, I have always had a problem with any player where people are quick to use that term to describe them as if they have to be great to be voted to one. The ProBowl is a popularity contest for the most part and there have been players who have been there who aren’t even close to being “great”. I’m not saying this is the case with Jay. We’ve had a lot of people recently, really bashing the QB ability of Michael Vick who has been to several Pro Bowls, me being one of them, I don’t think you can say he’s a great QB because of the that Pro Bowl designation.

Just my opinion.

Now that we have a quarterback...

Maybe we can get a head coach with some balls. Ditka was the last coach we’ve had here worth mentioning. His no nonsense, take no prisoners attitude worked for "The monsters of the midway. The Bears achieved the NFL’s highest reward for it. Lovie on the other hand is as anti-Ditka as you can get. You need a coach that can light a fire under underperforming players. Lovie’s favorite song, We’re 13-3 with Rex as our quarterback. Ditka would’ve chewed Wrecks up and spit him out and dared anyone to question his reasons. How do you go from Papa Bear to Iron Mike, to “Lovie” his name is as soft as his demeanor.

This is everything wrong w/ Morrissey
The present, at least here in Bourbonnais, is so shiny, it’s hardly recognizable. Caught up as I am in Cutler Mania, I have the Bears improving by one victory to 10-6 this year. But wait a second. Some experts are picking them to go 8-8. Does this make me Mr. Positive? I think it does.

You bleepity bleep, bleepin’ blowhard a-hole. Toot your own horn much? Even for an opinion column this is really low and very unprofessional to me. This is very poor journalism.
