Favre to Sign with the Queens

Who didn't see this coming?

Reports are now flying around that Farve is on his way or has landed in Minnesota and is suppose to sign with the Vikes today.  Link

Star-divide

ESPN Sports Center has reported that he has landed and more news should be out later today.  Again I'm not shocked that Favre lied about wanting to stay retired and wants to play again.  We've beaten to death everything about him but here it is again.  Favre might be in the NFC North once again.  Well let me be the first to welcome you back Bret, I hope you continue to add to your interception total.

Contract  2 years 25M.

I knew it...

As soon as the guy said he was retired, I knew it was a ruse to just avoid training camp. He’s an old guy and the Vikings wanted him that badly that they probably told Favre that he could miss training camp and still play QB for the vikings. This will be interesting when the bears get a chance at him.

I think he'll help them.

With that offensive line and the the speed burners they have PLUS the best running back in the NFL. They’ll be tough. This is how I see a Favre NFC North playing out.

1. Vikings – Pretty much stacked.
2. Packers – On the rise
3. Bears – Have too many leaks
4. Loins – bad.

This is exactly what i'm talking about

the mindless following, year after year, of the Vikings
Brett Favre does not have the magic ability to Carry this team above 10-6 this year.

Brett Favre does not have the magic ability to Carry this team above 10-6 this year.

Neither does Cutler.

I am not defending Brett Favre one iota. I HATE the guy. I just think that if you are going to accuse Vikings fans of “blind optimism” you should check your own when it pertains to Cutler.

That’s all.

I disagree...

Us Bears fans can have blind optimisim because we can have Cutler for the next 10 years, so even if we pull a Detroit Lions this year and go 0-16 we don’t have to worry because we still have time to build around Cutler.

On the other hand the Vikings aren’t getting more than 1 year out of Favre so you guys can’t afford to screw up this season.

i wasn’t directing the blind optimism at Vikings fans, it’s all the analysts that year after year, call it that the Vikings, or Cowboys, are superbowl bound…
and now it’ll repeat this year. Best of luck, as i said over at your site earlier, it should be a helluva season.

so maybe you misread, or read too much into my statement, and made a vast assumption without reading my other posts… never once did i say the mindless following was from the fans…

I hear ya, BN. Nobody hates those guys more than me. And I’m sorry for taking what you said out of context. I just think its silly to assume that the addition of Cutler OR Favre instantly propels our teams to Super Bowl talks. Cutler has shown flashes, but is far from a “sure thing” and Favre……. well, let’s just say I don’t think too highly of a guy is consistently in the top 5 of the league in INT’s.

It’s going to take a well-rounded effort from both of our teams in order to get to the big one. It’s definitely not all about our new starting QB’s (but don’t tell ESPN that…).

Here’s something we can both toast a beer over though…

Screw the Packers!! HA! :)

I think it’s an interesting perspective—One that is unique for Bears fans considering our past experiences with QB’s. You can’t blame us for what is our first real relationship in a long time. That being said, I think many of us know the cynicism that can align the false hopes on the QB position. Rex Grossman is our false prophet!

he didn’t say cutler could so argue his actual point.

Not that I am trying to ruffle feathers, or keep going on with this topic… but I think the simple act of reading WCG over the past 2 months is enough proof of Bears fans’ overinflated Cutler optimism.

Just like there is a ton of overinflated Favre optimism at DN. (Don’t even get me started on REVENGE4FAVRE…. can’t stand the guy) At this point, I think its unmerited from either side.

Cutler is an upgrade

He definitely does. He’ll help Forte out, he’ll make the receivers better, and he’s going to make Olsen a Pro Bowl TE this year. He is a definite upgrade. It almost makes me upset when people say he isn’t because you know the only reason they say that is because a) they don’t like the Bears, b) they don’t like Cutler.

I think Favre makes the Vikes one game better, which can very easily be the difference between going to the playoffs and not. Cutler probably does the same, so it’s up to the Bears defense to make up the difference. With that said, the Vikes should be considered favorites on paper at least.

Look at Favre's numbers last year.

He had more interceptions than the combo of Frerotte and Tarvaris, a lower QB rating, and the same amount of TDs.

Now he’s a year older, AND coming off shoulder surgery.

Meanwhile, you can’t argue that Cutler doesnt bring enough of an improvement over Orton and Grossman that we can’t win 2 more games.

Your reaction is simply “Don’t talk about my brand new QB even though he hasnt even passed a physical yet or i’ll get defensive and make a ridiculous statement.”

by Figgs on Aug 18, 2009 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions

He knows everything about it?

He’s still learning terminology, timing with receivers, any of the wildcat harvin plays. This is far from him coming back to play a year with the packers. Make no mistake, this might be a familiar offense, but it isnt one he knows inside and out.

by EricEmpire on Aug 18, 2009 1:44 PM CDT up reply actions

“He played for the Jets.”

And your point is??? The Jets had a very good team last year. They had statistically the 4th best defense in the league. A good RB duo, with Jones and Washington. (And don’t say the only reason they were good was Favre. They picked up two all-pro o-lineman in the offseason.) They had a good WR core, with Coles, Cotchery, and Keller. They had a very well rounded team.

You guys have probably the 3rd best defense in the league. A great RB core. Mediocore WR core. Notice the similarities? You guys are slighty more talented then the Jets were last season. Another big difference is, they had a healthy Favre for 8-9 games, who hadn’t undergone major surgery and didn’t have a partially torn rotator cuff. The odds are against Favre lasting the whole season, and if he indeed goes down is Sage going to come in and lead you to the SB? I don’t think so.

There are many concerns and questions for Favre. Don’t automatically assume he is going to be healthy and good for the whole year. After all this is the same guy who just 3 weeks ago was saying, “He didn’t think his body could hold up for a whole season.”

by EricEmpire on Aug 18, 2009 4:00 PM CDT up reply actions

actually

you would have needed to win 2 more games, or have had the Vikings lose 1 more game.

I don’t exactly get what you mean by saying “I’m full of it.”

Somebody earlier made a post stating that the Vikings are now stacked (I don’t believe they are any better with Favre). In response to that, someone else said,

This is exactly what i’m talking about the mindless following, year after year, of the Vikings
Brett Favre does not have the magic ability to Carry this team above 10-6 this year.

I simply said that while Favre doesn’t have the magical ability to carry the Vikings above 10-6, I don’t believe Cutler has the magical ability to carry the Bears above 9-7 either. I feel that your defense is very suspect and will cause problems that Cutler, obviously, can’t help.

If all of that makes me “full of it” then I guess I’m up to my forehead with “it”.

You say you’re not trolling… I personally disagree. When you come over to WCG and have at least one respectful discussion, then I will change my mind about you. Until then, keep spewing your “facts” and I will continue to have the same opinion of you.

And for the record, I don’t think this should be one big happy place, where all of us get along all of the time. But when negative comments like the one above, are all that you contribute, then…

Tell me why this makes your team better.

You certainly didn’t need the added INTs. You didn’t need a slow immobile QB in your pocket. You didn’t need a guy who wants to heave the ball to take carries out of AD’s hands. So what does this do for your team besides anger teammates and increase your turnovers?

by EricEmpire on Aug 18, 2009 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions

You're delusional

If you think he’s not better than T-Jack and Rosencopter. We DO need someone to take the ball out of ADs hands because every defense is expecting him to get the ball every play. Now with Favre, it’s just one more element for a defense to be worried about.

I’m not going to argue about INTs because he hasn’t thrown them yet for the Vikings. Slow and immoble doesn’t mean much when you sense the blitz and get rid of the ball lightning quick.

The only people it is going to make angry is T-Jack and Rosencopter. Honestly, not too concerned about them – I’m concerned about winning, which we will do.

Now that’s over, I agree with you. Favre is by far better than any other QB on your roster. He’s always found a way to keep plays alive and is one of the greatest to ever play the game. I think he’s going to be a huge upgrade to your offense, but I do think he’ll cost you some games as well with his untimely picks. I also think that taking the ball out of Peterson’s hands is both good and bad.

EE has his own opinion on Favre, just as all of us do. And I can see his side.

Favre is getting up there in age. He’s always at risk to throw an interception. He has led your team on this summer, thus alienating some teammates. He is going to try to QB a very good team, and the Vikings are very good, without even going to camp. He has some valid gripes on the guy.

I’m a half glass full guy, so I see more of the upside to the Favre signing. Although, I wouldn’t be that surprised if it didn’t turn out as EE predicts.

Peterson will be fresher, which will be good for his production and his career. All I know, as a Bears fan, it will make me happy when the games aren’t put solely on his shoulders. He’s proven time and time again, to be worthy of such task.

I can't stand him but I do think he's an upgrade over what they've got now.

That’s assuming he adjusts to the system and doesn’t but heads with Childress (or anyone else). Favre doesn’t deal well with being told what to do or with any criticism, and BC strikes me as being a bit of a micro-manager. I think the whole situation could end up blowing up in their faces. If not, I think it helps them. Though off the top of my head, I can’t think of any one-year-rental qbs that got a team to the big game.

No pun intended… well… yeah… maybe it was:)

So, I think their line is transforming to a better pass rushing unit with K Williams and J Allen, but not the dominant run stuffing unit it was in the past.

Also, their secondary has given up a lot of passing yards in recent years, because teams elected to throw against them, instead of running into that wall. Now, I think opposing offenses will be able to put out a more balanced attack vs their D.

What I sad was I think that they are transforming to a line that rushes the passer better, but will not stop the run as well as they have in the past. The past = the last 3 or 4 years, when their run defense was dominant. Pat Williams, the key to the run D, is 37 years old. They’re not gonna be a top run D for much longer.

I tend to believe that Pat Williams is the SOLE key to their run D.

In much the very same way that Ted Washington was the key to our run D, when we were dominant. When Washington was hurt in 2002, our run D was nowhere near the same, even though we still had Traylor. And, when we traded him away, we had a lot of trouble stopping the run.

The guy is 40 years old. If Minnesota fans are really dumb enough to throw all their money at the team for this lackluster year, they won’t have any for next year w/o Favre and then the Vikes will move. It is gonna happen sooner or later. No one wants to be in MN

Favre is an upgrade over the others,

but isn’t a Pro Bowl caliber QB anymore. The key is, can he make the Vikes better? Of course he can… they have a great running game, and an excellent defense.

Does this change the race to the North crown? Maybe. The Vikes were tough without him, and he certainly doesn’t weaken the team.

I can sort of compare Favre as their QB to Pace as our LT. He is a first ballot HOFer in the twilight of his career. He may be 70-75% of what he used to be, but is still a short-term upgrade over who was there before.

The Vikes are still the North champs until someone takes that title from them. We know the Bears upgraded in many areas in the offseason, but to not give the Vikes their props is silly.

A lot has happened since last season.

What point?

You think that because Favre (pre-injury) had Pro Bowl numbers last year, he will be the same this year?

Watching the LIVE conference...

Jeebus, Favre is old! I’m sure he’s still got some fuel in the tank, but he doesn’t seem to have that same fire that I’m used to seeing from him.

And as for Childress, he is one strange looking man. If he was in line behind me at the grocery store, I would probably hold on to my little girl a bit tighter. Creepy, creepy looking man.

I think the most interesting aspect will be the attitude of the other QB's if he should get hurt early in the season.

How would you like to be Sage and Tavaris at this stage? Basically tossed to the side due to the whim of an over the hill (probably, at least) windsock who hasn’t been able to make up his mind about playing for almost 3 years now. If Favre gets hurt or fails miserably, what will their mindset be to come in and mop up?

The obvious answer is “their Pros and it’s a business so it shouldn’t affect them”, but I think the reality is the pressure would be incredible. Whomever they bring in would either not want to make any mistakes at all or try to do everything himself to prove the Viking management wrong. Either way, not the optimal set of circumstances for anyone.

What a circus.

Being serious here

I’m thinking as a middle class person who basically lives paycheck to paycheck. In other words, I’d be happy as a clam to be making that sort of coin for being a backup to a HOFamer.

I think Favre can offer some good advice/tips/wisdom for Rosencopter and TJack.

I understand that...

if someone paid me that kind of money I’d carry his pads around for him and be happy doing it!!!!!!!

I do think these guys have a whole different view of things though and the way the Vikings and Favre have handled this has been very demeaning to these two guys. Their talent is what it is, but it was the Vikings decision to bring them onto their team. I just think they could have treated them with a little more respect. If any of us had similar things happen to us in our world, we’d probably be pretty pissed off.

Sure

As a competitor I would be a bit peeved, but realize it’s still a business. This probably spells the end for the TJack experiment, and most likely Rosencopter taking over next year for Favre.

Madden Update

with Favre as a Vike is coming out tomorrow. So for those of you who picked up Madden 10 your opportunity to “tee off” on Brett will be here soon. I don’t have it so you’ll have to tell me how good it feels to see him on the injury screen.

Analysts also said New England would win the AFC East last year. Atlanta would be no good last year. Dallas would win the NFC East last year. And Detroit would win at least 1 game last year. Plus, out of all the analysts, Wiley has to be one of the dumbest.

Turnover King..or Queen?

I just read on DN a skeptical Vikings fan shoot out some stats concerning Favre’s turnovers last year. I know he had 22 interceptions, but I did not know he had 10 fumbles too. That equates to 32 turnovers a year…or 2 TIMES A GAME HE GIVES THE BALL TO THE OTHER TEAM. If opposing offenses are any sort of good, they will take advantage of this. Not to mention AP was one of the league leaders in fumbles..

All I am saying is its hard to win games if you turnover the ball that much…except our SB runner-up Bears a few years ago
