The "Interceptor's" Future

Nathan-vasher-returns-108-yards_medium

I was as giddy as a school girl when the Bears management decided to re-up Nathan Vasher back in '07. He was, at the time, one of the shining stars on an extremely talented and ball-hawking defense. A defense that propelled the 2006 team to Super Bowl XLI, despite the pourous play on the opposite side of the ball. He played with an intensity matched by few and always seemed to put himself in the position to make plays. Why not pay out for one of NFL's top young cornerbacks?

More after the jump...

Star-divide

Vasher's Stats (pre-contract extension)

2004 - 16 Games / 7 Started  |  5 Interceptions (1TD)  |  1 FR  |  28 Tackles / 1 Assist

2005 - 16 Games / 15 Started  |  8 Interceptions (1TD)  |  0 FR  |  41 Tackles / 7 Assist

2006 - 14 Games / 13 Started  |  3 Interceptions (0TD)  |  0 FR  |  33 Tackles / 12 Assist

In 2005, Vasher also set the record for the longest return of any kind when he returned a missed 52-yard field goal for an 108-yard touchdown. A record that has since been tied by teammate Devin Hester and surpassed by San Diego Chargers cornerback Antonio Cromartie. Nathan struggled with injuries and missed some games in 2006, but came back strong in the playoffs. He was a key factor in the NFC Title Game, recovering a fumble and recording an interception against Drew Brees and the New Orlean Saints.

Good return option on top of the 16 interceptions in three years, it's not hard to see why Jerry Angelo and company awarded Vasher with a healthy five-year contract. His contract was worth nearly $28 million with $14 million in bonuses and breaks down like this:

Signing Bonus = $9.5 million
2007 - 850,000 base salary | 2 million roster bonus
2008 - 750,000 base salary | 2.5 million roster bonus
2009 - 2.9 million base salary
2010 - 2.95 million base salary
2011 - 3.45 million base salary

Vasher's Stats (post-contract extension)

2007 - 4 Games / 2 Started  |  1 Interception (0TD)  |  0 FR  |  7 Tackles / 1 Assist

2008 - 8 Games / 7 Started  |  1 Interception (0TD)  |  0 FR  |  20 Tackles / 1 Assist

Since his pay day, Vasher has appeared in a total of 12 games and recorded a mere two interceptions. Not outstanding stats for a guy tagged as the "Interceptor."

At the 2009 NFL Scouting Combine, Jerry Angelo spoke about Vasher's future and said, "I don't know where he is now, I touched on that. He has to re-establish himself, he's competing to start." Jerry has shown patience with Nathan, despite the inability to stay healthy and compete at a high-level even when he is. However, it seems that patience is started to grow thin and Vasher may be on the outside looking in this year.

Zack Bowman (a second year, fifth round player) has out-performed Vasher so far this off season. And despite being injured, is considered by many to open the season opposite Charles Tillman. Lovie Smith has even sang Bowman's praise as late as last week after watching Vasher struggle in the preseason opener against Buffalo.

What does this mean for the "Interceptor?"

I've been under the assumption for a while now that Vasher would cost too much to keep on the roster (as a backup), but cost way too much to cut. I originally thought he'd cost somewhere in the ballpark of $4.54 and $5.33 million (his salary cap charges) to drop him this season.

Now after re-analyzing the numbers, I'm calculating the salary cap charges (above) minus his base salary (2.9 million for 2009). This would put his salary cap hit for the 2009 season somewhere in the range of a 1.64 to 2.43 million. 2010 and 2011 would have similar implications on our overall cap allotment and would basically be dead money.

NOTE: I could still be off on these numbers, so please feel free to enlighten me if I'm not connecting the dots in the right order.

Not being an expert on the cap implications of cutting a player such as Vasher, I reached out to Kevin Seifert, the NFC-North Blogger for ESPN. And the following is his response:

"I haven't been able to get exact figures, but what I did find out is there won't be a prohibitive hit if they cut him. The cap won't be a reason for keeping him."

Unfortunatley... this is part of football.

Careers can take a 180 in a hurry.

I’m rooting for him, and hope he can get it all back together. Our secondary is a trouble spot, and he might make the roster just because we need a veteran there. Perhaps they can even re-structure his deal right now to take a pay cut. His bonuses have already been paid off. I don;t know how often that happens in the NFL, but it’s definitely worth a discussion with his agent: either get cut and sign somewhere else for a lot less, or be a back-up here and re-structure your deal.

Nice jorb.

Way to get bumped to the front page! :) I never had any idea of how his contract was broken down so thanks for enlightening me on that . I think his days at Halas Hall might be numbered unless he shows something in the next few preseason games. I don’t see how the Bears would want to pay him that much to sit on the sideline because he will get outplayed by Bowman. Now if Bowman could just stay healthy….

Thanks.

I was a little worried I was turning into Gesia with all of the post recently. I was constantly asking myself, would someone else want to read this. I cringed a little when I hit publish.

And the health of our DB’s worries me too, which is why I think we have to sit on him.

Uncalled for

comfortable with Graham and…… well after that damn sloth I can’t think straight. I guess McBride. We should keep Vasher for insurance purposes if anything. DJ Moore could possibly contribute but I’d say it’s a little early to tell on that one.

or put him in the nickel, and LEAVE manning at FS. as far as moore, it just worries me that they kept comparing him to vasher… mcbride’s been playing some physical football, so… i don’t know, i’m just not satisfied with the secondary AT ALL right now…

Remember...

We are in terrible trouble from a Safety standpoint. Inexperienced Safeties are dangerous for a Defense. Inexperienced Safeties with inexperienced Cornerbacks are deadly for a Defense. Add a woeful pass rush and we’re thanking God we get Detroit twice a year! And why is that Hamilton-kid still on the team? Geez!!!

I never liked Vasher

He’s the slowest corner on the team and the least physical. As a strictly zone corner, he’s technically sound, so keeping him makes sense, unless he’s passed for the 3rd corner on the depth chart by someone else

last two years hes been hurt and off the field

when he came in to the league as a rookie i was excited i mean a 5th round pick with 5 picks as a rookie? 8 in his second year? hes been one of my favorite players and i think its not smart to trade him for a 6th 7th round pick i say see if he can stay heatlhy if he does judge him based on that i dont think hes lost anything i think he is about 28 or so and hes not getting over the hill but i say give the guy a shot! if he returns to his rookie form that will be a big help to our defense

If Tillman's Injury And Bowman's Injury

Are any indication of their health moving forward with extreme possibilities of lingering issues, there is no way in hell we cut him! The NFL is the ONE sport where an insurance policy is VERY important with injuries so frequent. Suck up the fact that we paid him good dollar after his ’06 playoffs and get every bit out of him we can, whether as a backup or fill-in starter.

This is just a bad situation,

Unfortunately, this close to opening day, there is no way we could cut him now just to save some $$$. He will have to be an overpriced backup/starter for at least another year. Why? Because our secondary is thin already, and we don’t have the luxury of making a strictly cost-cutting move. Keep him this year, then if he shows no improvement, cut him and sign a better replacement player.

Really good analysis of the guy, smudgers!

Funny thing is... other teams around the league are faced with similar decisions right now.

The Raiders have not been impressed with former 2006 #7 overall pick Michael Huff. I don’t know if he’s having a good camp or not, but he could be a casualty, and if so… he’d be a guy for us to look at.

Vasher was just a product of what was once a good pass rush

He was never a good cover corner, but a guy who was good in zone coverage. Bowman and Graham have the speed and athletic ability to cover corners 1 on 1 so I could see either one of them being one of the #2 starter.

by NiqueBears on Aug 19, 2009 3:02 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Regardless,

How can you effectively cover ANYONE play off the line of scrimmage 5-7 yards every play? I really hope that stops soon. No wonder our receivers struggle to get open if all they do is practice with corners playing off them. But I digress….

He's a nice guy, but like everything else, it's a business

They may end up cutting him if it doesn’t turn out to be too cost prohibitive. At the very least he’ll be demoted to the # 3 corner on the team behind Bowman and Tillman. He may even slip to 4th or 5th on the depth chart.

by JimmyMack on Aug 19, 2009 4:21 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Nathan Vasher is a goner

There is no chance he makes the final roster cuts. Not with THAT contract layered on top of the fact that he continues to look like garbage out there in between being perpetually injured.

Vasher is gone. It should come as no shock to anybody when the deed is done by Jerry Angelo.

I want to wait out this year first...

….to kind of see what happens, he’s done so much for us in the past that I think we should give him a good full healthy year to prove he deserves that contract.

But, in a perfect world, we could trade Vasher and some picks to a team to get a solid #1 receiver. I would kill for a receiver like Boldin or Ward, a real physical receiver who could even help in the run game blocking. But there’s about a 5% chance we will ever get Boldin and 0% chance we will get Hines Ward.

by PoopieDeLoopie on Aug 20, 2009 3:54 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

vasher used to be a pretty decent cover CB

he didn’t have blazing speed, but great instincts, which made him one of the better CBs in the NFL (not one of the best, but a quality one). i’m not sure if the injuries have physically done damage, or just killed his confidence, or have him inconsistent because of the fewer snaps, but vasher’s instincts aren’t that good anymore. he can’t really cover good WRs without that, since he doesn’t have the jets. i don’t see him getting cut just because we don’t know when tillman is back, and don’t know of bowman can replicate his OTA performance in the regular season. but in terms of ability, yeah, i see him as maybe our 3rd or 4th best CB at this point – tillman, bowman, and graham are all above him. sad drop for the interceptor.

by guy incognito on Aug 20, 2009 11:04 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think he was always overrated and never that good.

Yes he got a lot of picks, but a big part of that was luck and the rest was the Bears’ D-line bringing good pressure. He was always an undersized corner with mediocre speed.

by Poloplaya14 on Aug 23, 2009 5:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If our front four get pressure on the QB consistently,

All this talk about our questionable secondary will fade to the background to be addressed next off-season.
