I figured it was going to happen this way. If Beeks has been out-performing Omiyale, as a lot of reports have shown, then Beeks should be our starter. Money or not.

may the best man win...

I like Beeks and I think having line depth is good so I’m not panicing I think they’ll do what best for the team.

Don't sweat it. Learn to understand the real reasons.

Omiyale’s learning a new position. They already know what Beekman can do. So, they want to see how Omiyale can perform with the 1st string at guard. It’s for evaluation purpose.

Also, don’t be upset if Beekman wins the job. For one, that means he’s the better guard right now… and you want the better player out there, don;t you? Secondly, we gave Omiyale a nice contract, but it wasn’t a bank breaker. It was good value, and he helps improve our overall talent at O-Line.

Omiyale

is said to be bigger and stronger in the running game than Beekman. Ultimately, he’ll start at some point in the season because he’s more talented. I like Beekman, but his size may be better suited at C.

Dickerson keeps saying that

Omiyale’s technique sucks. and that beekman has outplayed him

Beekman’s been getting a lot of work in as backup center lately b/c they’ve been giving Kreutz days off.

That's why I said at "some point."

It’s an entirely different position and new scheme, so it will take a little time.

Do you have a link with Dickerson's blog?

I can’t seem to find where he said his technique is that bad. I read he’s in favor of having Beekman start, but nothing else.

Read it

Thanks anyways. I like this quote on Omiyale though.

“He’s powerful, got excellent strength, excellent explosion and quickness off the ball,” said Turner. “He’s gotten better every day as far as the adjustments. It’s a new offense for him and it takes time. He’s got the natural talent, now he’s getting comfortable in the system.”

Once he settles in with his technique, IMO I believe he’s the superior athelete. I guess we’ll see soon enough whether he gets it down in the next three games.

That's another reason why Omiyale is starting the next game.

Beekman is gonna play center after Kreutz takes a seat for the night.

dickerson is jsut a beat writer, which means he knows absolutely nothing. or something.

by mike b on Aug 19, 2009 11:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Why would I be upset?

I want the best player to win the job. Not the player who has the biggest contract. I’ve said all along that Beekman is more likely to lose the job than Omiyale is to win it. From the majority of reports I’ve heard from camp, Beeks has done a great job and has benefited and improved tremendously from lining up between Kreutz and Pace. I haven’t seen many bad things coming out of camp about his play.

And 6.3 million this season doesn’t break the bank, but it is a lot of money for a player that’s done nothing to prove he’s worthy of it.

4 years for $11.5 million... with escalators maxing out at $14 million

The $6.3 mil is just for year 1, with bonuses being paid out. It’s a pretty modest deal for an NFL free agent.

Say he doesn't hit his escalators...

That’s 11.5 million that he’ll make over four years. Averaging 2.875 million per year. That is a lot of money for an unproven “NFL Free Agent” who hasn’t proven anything on the field. In his three year NFL career, he’s started one game and has been nothing more than a backup on two teams. The Bears paid the majority of his contract up front because they started the season with 31+ million in available cap space. I’m not saying he won’t be worth it in the long run, but modest contract for what he’s provided to the game up to this point, definitely not.

Omiyale

will prove his worth, he was backup to a great player as well, just like beeks is next to pace/kreutz.

i agree that it is a bit steep, but i think the 20/20 hindsight thing will look pretty good down the road.

I would debate you, but that would only lead to me being dragged away in handcuffs...

Updates delayed by rain and dinner, but here we go:

Dvoracek running with the 1s along side Adams.
Afalava INT at goaline. Having awesome camp, that guy.
Wildcat: Forte to Hester incomplete, but Jay threw a nice block.
Harris with 1s during 11 on 11.
Jay went 6-6 during 7s with bullets to Olsen and Rideau.
(Also, Rideau was on the radio with Mully & Hanley today and he was really good. Funny and smart.)
3500 fans on hand after the rain. Bears back in full pads.
Know dropped a perfect deep ball from Hanie.
Rideau with 2 good catches. Gets a “point” from Cutler.
Dez made a great catch in traffic during 7s.
Hester returning punts.
Lovie watching Peanut while works on the side. McClure thinks he may be getting closer.
Kellen Davis back after sitting with hammy.
Kevin Jones sitting for 2nd day. Says he’s fine.
Mannying, Peanut, Bowman, Toeaina, Izzy, Roach all out.
First cuts are 13 days away.
Mark Anderson getting private teaching lesson with Rod & Asst. Eric Washington.

And the strangest I’ve ever read from Dickerson:
Desmond clark and pat mccaskey with an odd handshake. Were they in the same college fraternity?

More good things about Afalava and Rideau...

Afalava showed up in PS game 1… but Rideau has yet to make an impact in a game situation.

That could be cause Cutler only had eyes for Hester.

I’m hoping he mixes it up a bit this week.

Dvoracek running with the 1s

since he’s our most important DL according to the guy that does this for a living.
