Bears Show Improvement - Beat Giants 17-3
What a difference a week makes. Or should I say; What a difference it is having Matt Forte and Greg Olsen back in the lineup? Offensively the Bears first unit was impressive. Jay Cutler still tried to make a few throws he shouldn't, but with a big gun, you have to expect big things. I'll live with the gun-slinging force it in throw on occasion, because Cutler will complete some passes that only a QB with that kind of arm strength can.
I thought Erik Kramer did an outstanding job in spotlighting the offensive line. It seemed every time I saw them do something I wanted to playback on my DVR, Kramer beat me to it. He did the same thing with a few nice plays in the secondary.
Some Game Stars
Jay Cutler - 8 of 13 for 121 yards (117.8 Rating) 1 TD
Matt Forte - 9 carries for 58 yards (6.4 Avg) 1 TD
Cutler moved the ball around for a lot of yardage.
Earl Bennett - 2-42
Devin Aromashodu - 1-38
Kellen Davis, Juaquin Iglesias, Brandon Rideau, Greg Olsen and Garrett Wolfe all caught a pass for over 15 yards.
What's your take?

Offense and defense
Looked great tonight. Cutler was very impressive
Wonderful performance tonght..
Love the D line presence, the swarming defense, and the way to offense spread out the field to make plays. Two concerns – I think Hester needs to make that play, or at least have a better sense for cutler’s long throws. Granted, Hester has the ability to create that opportunity in the first place – but he has to finish. Second concern is Tommy Harris – he’s still limping around and I don’t think he made his presence known like he would if healthy. However, there’s lots of time. Good game, Bears.

Agreed...
It was nice to see the defensive swarm of navy blue that engulfed the ball at the end of each play. It was like a pack of starved dingos attacking a bucket of KFC…
I don’t think Harris is 100% yet, I hope he gets there quick, if not he will find himself watching the game from the sideline, or his sofa at home.

I'll have more thoughts later
but right now I’m just kind of giddy to see a legitmate offense AND defense all wearing Chicago Bear navy and orange.
What a fun game that was to watch. :-)

Overall
for preseason I was pretty impressed. Our D held the first team to 3 points, and the offense look to be balanced. I thought the O line did a good job with giving Cutler time. I thought Jay made a few throws that he shouldn’t but he did check down, run, and throw it away. To me it looked like he wasn’t as nervous, not trying to force anything and letting the game come to him. I also loved the TD to Clark, the way the play was set up in the two tight set was just great. you could see the Giants selling out for the run. D got some pressure had a few sacks. Urlacher got owned a few times by Brandon Jacobs, but Jacobs tends to do that to people.

That's always been my biggest complaint
with Urlacher. He struggles with up-the-middle run games, especially with big backs. Was he just unable to bring him down, or was he getting caught out of position? Haven’t got to see the game yet cause it wasn’t on down here. I’ve noticed in the past that he often gets sealed outside by a lineman coming downfield. He’ll sometimes make the play afterwards, but way past where it should have been made.

He wasn't out of position,
Jacobs just trucked him unfortunately. Urlacher tried to make the play and was in the right position too. He just bounced off of Jacobs, who has to be the biggest running back in the NFL. He makes Jerome Bettis look kind of small.
Yeah, he's as big or bigger
but he’s completely ripped. He doesn’t have that kool-aid man shape like most really big backs have.

I thought the offense and defense both looked much improved. Devin Hester should have caught that deep pass though. I have no idea why he slowed down for that pass. Everyone else looked great. Forte,Cutler,Olsen and Bennet looked very good imo. Great catch by the other Devin too.

My thoughts.
Cutler looked great spreading the ball around.
Hanie looked like a solid #2.
The receivers got separation and made some nice catches.
Both D.A. and Rideau helped their chances tonight.
Our DLine really worked hard and played well.
Urlacher had a couple iffy moments up front, but bounced back and had a good game.
Pisa is good.
The D, overall, were attacking the ball. Very nice to see.
Dave Toub is my new man crush and I’m not afraid to admit it! The Bears ST comes to play year in and year out.

I watched the Aaron Rodgers highlights too. Man… he’s good. Very similar to Cutler, but I think Cutler takes more risks, because he has a stronger arm.

Much better
Hanie looks good. I think we can count on him. Kinda hoping they just release Basanez and roll with 2 QBs on the roster.
I liked Cutler’s long drives. No purely Rex Grossman-esque big miracle play for a TD. Good stuff to see them march downfield.
Kevin Jones ran hard, also liked how AP looked. Garret Wolfe looked good, but the fumble hurts him.
Overall much, much happier this week. I can’t wait for the game in Denver, and I’m marking off the days til the regular season.
I agree
go with 2 QB’s
AP looked good against guys that will be looking for work in a couple weeks. I think the Bears made up their mind that Wolfe will stick, I’d like to see AP stay too… maybe going with the 2 QB’s will let them go 4 RB’s again?

Orton threw that interception left handed, I was thinking why?, good thing we have Cutler now
I Take Exception....
to this:
Jay Cutler still tried to make a few throws he shouldn’t, but with a big gun, you have to expect big things.
Devin Hester turned towards the coverage instead of away from it, and then he stopped running expecting a pass to be underthrown. Plain and simple, the fact that Hester has not been a WR for very long at a high level shows big time!
Cutler looked fine. Olsen dropped a pass, and Hester probably should have caught two more than he did.
You shouldn't take exception to that statement, it's true...
I don’t think he’s criticizing Cutler, it’s just that he’s the type of player that will take risks because he believes his arm can put the ball into any crack. Favre, in his prime, was the same way. I think all wiltfongjr is saying is that during the season, that will come back to bite him on occasion, we might even lose a game because of it, but it’s the price you pay for this kind of talent and we have to take a little bad to get A LOT of good. I just hope fans and media don’t go too balistic when he’s not perfect with every pass or decision.
might win some games because of it too.
by Ryan21 on Aug 23, 2009 8:13 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
I diagree wtih your interpretation of it...
Jay Cutler still tried to make a few throws he shouldn’t,
Say what YOU want about the long-term decisions… that’s fine.
The fact remains that he was referring to this game and the throws he made to Hester twice.
I only saw one throw that Cutler overthrew and it wasn’t to Hester. HOWEVER, I did not see one ball thrown that Cutler should not have thrown. Even the one at the round was a good decision.
Just because our “number one” WR is probably going to end up behind Bennet adn Rideau/Aromashodu by the end of the season it is still no reason to blame Cutler for Hester’s inexperience. Hester has been playing WR for only a very short time. Cutler has been playing QB his whole life. Do you really think it was Cutler’s fault when Hester misses those throws?
by Homer-ism101 on Aug 23, 2009 9:28 AM CDT up reply actions
Of course he was referring to this game and where did it say that only the throws to Hester were questionable?
In fact, he never mentions Hester’s name in the post, nor does he refer to the one long pass that Hester messed up. That throw, by the way, was a great decision by Cutler but a terrible play on Hester’s part. I agree with wiltfongjr, there were a couple of plays where I thought he was fortunate that it was incomplete or not intercepted, but all really talented QB’s will attempt those throws on occasion.
I’ll live with the gun-slinging force it in throw on occasion, because Cutler will complete some passes that only a QB with that kind of arm strength can.
How is that statement from the original post anything but an endorsement of Cutler and his abilities? You’re reading a completely different thread of messages than I am.
I think he was referring to...
Some of his throws to Bennett in tight coverage, which were risky. The ones he completed can be seen here. Some others were
1. a pass deep in the middle of the field on 2nd an 9, where Bennett was draped by a couple guys and drew a 23 yard pass interference call. Those are risky throws that only a gunslinger like Cutler’s attempts.
2. a quick slant on the very next play, that the CB jumped and nearly picked off (he bobbled and dropped it)…

I wouldn't worry..
Denver looks very, very rought around the edges. It will be a good test for defending the short passes over the middle and in the flats, but our LB’s are good and quick. They have no running game except a guy named Hillis in the Brandon Jacobs mold. That said, they have crafty recivers, so it will be an excellent test for our defense. Their defense is as bad as last year. Also, looks like Simms got hurt, so they’re only down to two QB’s.

This Bears D...
…know Orton like the back of their hand (as, I would imagine, the Bronco’s D knows Cutler)…I wonder how many picks Orton threw to our secondary during practices? My conjecture is that I bet the Bears secondary picked off Kyle far more than the Bronco’s picked off Cutler…
And as much as I liked Kyle as a gamer, a dude, and a neckbeard (I really did. I hope Kyle has a great career.), he’s simply not as good as Jay.
I saw on the stat line that
Craig Steltz had 3 tackles. How did he look? Did he stay at FS the whole time? Who can give me a rundown?

Actually...
that was kind of a BS call in a way…. but even so, it was only a 5 yard penalty. Automatic first down yes, but it wasn’t a thirty yard interference penalty either.
Having said that, Steltz did not look good by any means.

You missed a lot I guess...
The Bears and Broncos didn’t actually trade Cutler and Orton- they just traded names. So the person behind center for the Bears last night was Kyle Orton, just wearing a Jay Cutler jersey. It’s a common mistake.

Nice to see both the offense and defense step up after last weeks game.
It’s still only the preseason but it’s nice to get a taste of what’s possible when all the weapons in our offense are clicking. Bennett looks like he’s getting more and more comfortable with Cutler and Hester looks like he’s finally getting the WR position. Kramer pointed out his great dowfield blocking, and Cutler will find him in open space enough times a game to work his magic. Olsen is gonna be a beast. I see no less than a 70/800/8 season from him. And we can’t forget Forte. The guy has looked like a seasoned veteran since he first stepped foot on the field in a Bears jersey. The defense looked great. Pisa made a strong bid to keep his starting job. Payne made some nice plays in the secondary from the FS position, which is nice if Afalava earns more playing time. All in all, a great game, but it’s still only practice. Let’s see if we can put it all back together when it counts in Green Bay.
I won't get to high or too low in the preseason..
But I was pleased with many things tonight. They looked kinda rusty on tackling but kinda cleaned it up. I thought it was funny watching Urlacher get run over. The offense looked sharp. I’m starting to buy into the Marinelli hype. But again it’s just preseason. Packers look tough.
I have seen a QB and it was good.
I concur, eater of souls...
I have not yet been able to actually “see” the game yet. NFLN doesn’t play it until 6PM tonight. I listened to it and I expected the Bears offense to do well because the Giants were out 5 starters. Still it sounded like the execution was there. Hope we can start to dispense with the “Hester is a #1 WR” talk. He should really go back to being the best KR in history and if they want to drop him in on a few offensive plays, then fine. Trying to make him a WR is simply not the best use of his talents.
"There's a fine line between stupid, and clever"-D St Hubbins Spinal Tap
Devin Hester...
No one remembers that the play directly before before the notorious ‘underthrown’ Hester interception last week, Devin Hester did the same thing as this week… slow down on a perfectly thrown ball. I think Cutler’s a big man to not mention it, but I believe that’s what caused the INT last week. Hester again with the slowing down when he looks for the ball on the fly route.
Hester’s hands seem to be slightly more sure this year, but his route running still needs work. He has always seemed to be bad at the Fly route, and when you have a player like Hester, that’s a pretty important route. Especially considering whenever he runs it, he has 20 feet of separation. If you take away the deep bomb from the Hester/Cutler combo, why even try to work Hester into the offense? Keep him on special teams where he makes the opponent kick the ball out of bounds on kickoffs.
If they get him better at running straight up the field, and not angling/slowing down when looking for the ball, he will get Touchdowns every time. Soon we would have be versing 10 man defenses with 1 purely playing prevent.

Ron Turner, Cutler & Hester
At first, I thought that the missed bomb to Hester was Devin’s fault, as he slowed when he looked back as Jay rolled out. But a WR’s job is to get open, and it’s the QB’s job to get him the ball. When a WR is that wide open, the QB only needs to get it there. If Grossman or Orton had missed on that opportunity, they’d be getting ripped in here. But Devin isn’t used to having to run faster & farther for passes, either. Hester needs to learn the art of the WR, when to come back for the ball, when to put the gas on.
But it doesn’t matter, it’s why they have the preseason. Sure, Devin has never played with a talent like Jay at QB before. But Jay Cutler has never played with anyone like Devin Hester, either. Brandon Marshall & Eddie Royal are good, but they’re entirely different. Cutler could potentially have a Steve Smith/Tim Brown/Deion Sanders type talent in Hester. It’s incredible to think about the youth at the offensive skill positions that Jerry Angelo has acquired – Cutler, Matt Forte, Hester, and Greg Olsen.
Which brings me to Ron Turner. I’ll go on record that I don’t like him. I’m a U of I grad, enough said. But I also think that Ron Turner helped lose the Super Bowl, the simplified version being – why is Rex throwing downfield in a close game in the rain? Why are we calling dropback passes on short yardage at midfield, when we want to control the clock to keep Peyton on the sidelines?
One of my favorite reasons for acquiring Cutler is that Ron Turner will finally have no excuses. You have a Pro QB. Now do something on offense. That being said (written) – I thought Turner called a great game last night. Despite what some folks think about Cutler joining a ‘running team’ like the Bears, I thought several plays in particular showed the potential of Turner’s Bear offense.
The goal-line TD to Desmond Clark was power-formation work of art. A three-TE formation, Clark on the left, Davis on the right, and Olsen goes into motion into the backfield. All of a sudden it’s a 3-back set with Olsen, McKie, and Forte! It could be a run or pitch to the right, Davis sealing the line, Olsen & Mckie leading. It could be a power run up the middle. Or a run to the right. Or a pass to Olsen or Forte out of the backfield. Nope – Clark wide open!
Next week I want to see Cutler & Hester connect on a long pass; continued production from the young WRs; no turnovers, especially by the first team; and continued good pass protection. And no injuries to either team.
by BullsFanInSeattle on Aug 23, 2009 7:32 AM CDT reply actions
Devin was completely overmatched by the pass. LOL.
Not only did he slow down… his head got turned around as he went from looking over one shoulder, to looking over the other. The guy just isn’t a natural receiver.
Turner is going to have a lot of fun this year with Forte and Olsen… as he will often will split one wide to get a mismatch.

WRONG, WRONG, WRONG....
If Cutler’s job is to get the ball to where Hester is, he would have done so.
But guess what would have happened? Hester would stop, wait for the ball to get there, and then be mashed by the safeties.
A QB’s job is to lead the WR into the most ideal spot for him to catch the ball.
Just like when Hester TURNED INTO THE COVERAGE rather than AWAY FROM IT, it was not Cutler’s fault.
Cutler led him perfectly with that pass, but for whatever reason, Hester stopped running.

We know the reason
Cutler led him perfectly with that pass, but for whatever reason, Hester stopped running.
The reason that Hester stopped running is that for the past three seasons when a Bear QB left the pocket, it meant:
1. A sack and fumble by Rex;
2. that he was already beyond the range of Griese or Orton’s arm-strength while scrambling.
Let’s hope he learned a valuable lesson last night.

ha that's pretty sweet
the giants looked bad that game too
Overall, it was about what I expected...
Cutler had his guys back and developed some invaluable on-field chemistry with them. Yes, it’s the preseason, and some key Giants starters didn’t play, but frankly, I was stunned by just how efficient the scoring was.
It's funny
when the Giant fans say they had 3 starters not playing. The Bears had Tillman, Bowman, D. Manning all absent on defense.

Knox and WRs
Is Johnny Knox going to potentially be cut? He hasn’t been returning kicks which I thought would be a good spot for a rookie with his speed. I don’t seem him being targeted much in the passing game? We were all so high on him from OTAs but do his work-outs with pads prove otherwise?
A couple more “mishaps” in the regular season (I am not worried about preseason, just working out the kinks) by Hester and I say we move him to the slot. I am a huge supporter of Devin Aroshomadu and Earl Bennett being the 1-2. Cutler loves the size of DA, just like he loved the abilities of Royal last year. And Bennett has really impressed me with his speed after the catch and overall grasp of the position this year.
Knox did return last night, but there were only two kickoffs to return:)
A lot of different guys were used on punt returns…

A few thiings I noticed at the game
tried to watch a few things at the game and here is what I saw:
Cutler looked sharp and in control. A couple of forced passes but that is going to happen all year. I thought the playcalling was much less vanilla this week and am pleased with the limited stuff we put out there. As stated the tackle looked very good. I think Omilaye has struggled and is the obvious weak link in the line. WR continue to improve and I think we will be fine. Forte looked awesome and there is a huge gap between him and Kevin Jones.
Defense:
Dline looked solid, better pressure than the previous week. Lb missed some tackles, our defense of Jacobs running the ball left something to be desired. I did notice Vasher playing some tighter coverage and he actually showed improvement. Steltz can"t cover anyone and we should cut him loose instead of taking up a roster spot. I have not been a Payne supporter but he looked very good and was in position for most of the night. Very encouraging. We have to find a way to get Corey Graham in the game, he is always around the ball.
Omiyale had a great game... much more physical in the run game.
His one gaffe was a tough play to make… he blocked his 1st man, then had to release and try to slow down a blitzing LB (Chase Blackburn). He couldn’t get to Blackburn on that play, but he made up for it later, when he mauled Blackburn on Forte’s TD.
Brandon Jacobs runs over everyone in the NFL, so don’t be too upset that he trucked us.

Sack I value your opinions but..
but Omilaye did not have a great game. Watched it again today and he did not get much of a push on the inside running game, missed a few blocks, etc. He was good at pass blocking as the whole line has really excelled at it through 2 games. But our inside running game is leaving a little to be desired. Our successful running plays came off of the stretch My take is Beekman is superior at run blocking but Omilaye is better at pass blocking and we need to protect the franchise…
Clarify
Not saying he had a bad game, he had a decent game and will continue to get better. But he is the weakest part of the line was my point. Maybe the word “struggled” is a bit harsh..
Here botta...
This is from Dan Pompei
Omiyale obliterated Giants middle linebacker Chase Blackburn on Matt Forte’s 32-yard touchdown run.
“He’s a big, strong man,” center Olin Kreutz said. "Jeez, he’s a big, violent guy. He hits people, it shocks them.
“He has size, legs. He helps us on run downs.”
The Bears need a powerful run blocker at left guard because, other than right guard Roberto Garza, none of the other Bears starting linemen are mashers on the run. Omiyale could give the Bears’ line something they didn’t have and something they need.

as I said below he was great on that play
and he had a decent game. But can you say that the middle of our line can move the ball up the middle and impose their will on the defensive line? We are great on the stretch play and traps, but when we want to get a third and one or two we need a better push out of the middle three guys and I haven’t seen that yet. I think he is going to be a good player but for a big and violent man I need to see a better push on running the ball straight up the middle. Maybe the other two are the ones holding him back…but we were better than the week before.
find a way to get Corey Graham in the game, he is always around the ball
i agree he had a nice blitz last night.
Oh and by the way..
you Hanie supporters out there?? He is not yet at 2nd string level. He struggled last night, too slow on his reads, holds the ball too long, etc. He missed a ton of wide open guys last night (Is he pissed at Kellen Davis??) He has a decent arm but I am very worried about our back up QB situation. He is still a 3rd string guy in this league and still has a lot too learn so we still have no 2nd string qb. Jay, stay healthy sizzle…
was he too slow
on that awesome TD run, give the man his props, a couple of years ago he would have started for us.

I want him to be great at hitting the wide open man which he failed to do many times.
I want my second string quarterback to be able to fill in

wow a Hanie basher?
I’d rather have Hanie than half the second string QB’s out there. Besides if Hanie is in then season is over. Not to bash him but this is Cutler’s team.
I have seen a QB and it was good.
I just don't understand the faithful following
for a guy that has never plaed an NFL down. He has looked good against 2nd and 3rd string. We are now this close to getting to the big dance and a second string QB is not NFL ready. But as you said, what team does have a capable second string QB? SD, Pitt, Philly,etc..I mean why didn’t we go and get a Jeff garcia for insurance? What the hell if Aaron Rogers went down they would be no better with their backup..and the Vikings have crap..So I guess all is good.
It just seems like your complaining about Michael Jordan's back up at sg.

Agree with your assessment of his weaknesses, but not the ranking..
hanie’s a two. Two’s have a few issues, which is why they’re twos. For his mobility, he still loses presence in the pocket – look at all the sacks he takes, both now and his record-breaking (in sacks taken) college years. He missed a couple open looks, but not a ton – he only had a half dozen or so incomplete passes at all. All these problems are fixable with experience – I love his arm and his double threat potential.

One thing I expect to see more of this year
WRs running after the catch…
Cutler delivers the ball with so much more velocity and accuracy than our old QBs… that alone actually creates more separation for the WRs. It should give our WRs many more opportunities to run after the catch than last year.

I didn't get to see the game because I was at the Cardinals/Chargers game
But I like what I’m seeing from Cutler and Forte. The BEars are going to be tough to beat this year, and Favre looking as out of shape as he did the other night will help too.
can the season start now?
only 2nd game in the preseason i know i shouldn’t get ahead of my self, but superbowl pop into my head.
my thoughts on the game.
I liked kevin jones he looked quick and strong just has to learn on how to hold on to the football. He almost lost it on the play before is fumble.
Offense line looked great, 1st team shut down their 1st defense line.
Brandon Jacobs is a beast, ran over urlacher twice. Would any of you try to tackle brandon jacobs?
Omilaye played a solid game overall
One missed block but he basically blew a hole in the Giant’s D for Forte to run through. There’s a reason why he was expected to start eventually, despite Beekman’s excellent training camp. Looked a little like Jimbo Covert out there – huge guy, moves his feet well, a great pickup for the Bears this year. The guy’s a real masher, and we need more of those types in our O – Line.
Agreed, however as far as Beekman goes...
I think he’s really grown, to be as decent at RG as he is with his less than ideal size is really a great accomplishment. As long as he gets his snapping down, I’m not as worried about losing Kreutz to age.
Dvoracek and Vasher both sealed their fate
Look for both of them to be part of the final cuts. Neither will be missed. The nice thing about getting rid of Vasher is that it will open up a lot of dollars to reallocate elsewhere.

It looked easy, didn’t it?
Seemed like the Giants did not want to play last night. Especially Goober Eli. They played Monday, remember.
Hester went after that pass like it was a punt. He’s gotta run through the ball, if that makes any sense. And I like Hester on short routes too. His hands are actually really good. I have no problem with him as our go to guy.
Jacobs runs over everyone
The good thing is if it was any other back the defense would of looked much better
Vasher? Really?
I have no problem with him being cut, but can’t believe that Angelo’s going to cut him loose, since he’s always shown ridiculous loyalty to his prior draft choices.
“As long as he gets his snapping down, I’m not as worried about losing Kreutz to age.”
That’s an excellent point regarding Beekman – he could easily start at center when Kreutz retires, if not sooner. He’s really feisty in there – and btw, Williams looked fairly snarly as well last night, true to his reputation in college. I like nasty O – Lines, hope they keep this up.
Just watched on NFLN...
…cuz I work on Saturdays. The botom line is that I felt the first team put on a display on both sides of the ball. Cautler was awesome. O-line was on the attack giving Forte massive holes. Recievers and ends looked great, other than a bad drop by Olsen (I think it was him), and Hester slowing up on that rocket that Cutler launched. Our D-line was stout. I liked the adjustments from Urlacher and thought he and Briggs played well, in general. What really stood out for me on D was the play of Tinoisamoa and Payne. Payne with the great pass defense and a really strong open field tackle. Tinoisamoa looked like he was all over the place, making plays and getting in there to assist…This game was fantastic!
Cautler?
You spell Tinoisamoa right and misspell Cutler?
The mind boggles.

…not quite sure how i got the “a” in there on the first one, but it looks like I spelled it right the second time…thanks for the insight though…well done
Hester...
The offense overall looked very solid…still some kinks to work out but that will come with time…hopefully Cutler and Hester will be on the same page by the GB game…those fly routes must start connecting b/c we all know Cutler can throw it that far and Hester has the speed to get it…once they get that down this offense can get scary real fast for any opposing defense…
I think i've had a change of heart on Garrett Wolfe.
He’s a really good special teams player. In fact I think thats the only think keeping him on the team besides his draft status. I think he’s saved a few kick returns if I’m not mistaken.
I have seen a QB and it was good.
Cutler, Forte, Olsen, Clark, and all of the WR's looked very good out there.
So did Aromashadu, Tinoisamoa, and their first team db’s. Defensive line did a great jorb through the whole game. All in all, looking forward to some great football. I don’t think we need to bring in a veteran WR, like what we have already. Garrett Wolfe was very impressive. He needs to hold on to the ball a little better, but I am definitely a fan.
