Dvoracek hurt. Torn ACL/MCL sprain? Status unclear

In a shock to no one, Dusty Dvoracek is reportedly out for the season:

Defensive tackle Dusty Dvoracek, who had a sack, tackle for loss and quarterback hit Saturday night against the New York Giants, will miss the season after tearing the ACL in his right knee, a source close to the player said. It's the fourth straight season-ending injury for the hard worker who has had a star-crossed career since being selected in the third round in 2006. [Source]

Really kind of stinks. I like the guy, he works hard.. but he really is made of glass.

Look for Matt Toeina to make the 53-man now for depth on the d-line.

EDIT by ChiFan13: Seems there's some confusion on this story. Biggs originally posted this story, but the Bears haven't made an announcement yet. This much we do know: Dvoracek has a knee injury - the severity of which is undetermined at this time. (Helmet tip - EricEmpire)

Update from Vaugh McClure's twitter:

Lovie said Dusty Dvoracek has MCL tear and has NOT been ruled out for the season. More tests to come Wed.

And here's a link to an article in the Tribune. (Thanks to DisCUBbobulated)

if it had to be anyone

I guess we can deal. It is a blow, but not a critical one. Halfway through the preseason with a majority of our roster intact. Can’t ask for much more. Hopefully it stays that way.

by Doc's Sports Predictions Guy on Aug 24, 2009 11:21 AM CDT up reply actions

I disagree.

When healthy, Dvoracek is an excellent nose tackle capable of doing everything the Bears system needs the nose tackle to do. Anthony Adams is definitely capable of filling the gap, but Dusty’s injury means more snaps for him and Marcus Harrison, which in turn means decreased effectiveness. This will hurt.

I'm with you.

I’m a big Dusty fan. I got trashed for saying I thought he was (not our best) but our most important lineman. But I’m saying, he’s only played 15 games in four years so it’s not like we can’t get on without him.

If anyone was going to get hurt, better the name on the jersey was “Dvoracek” rather than “Urlacher”, “Forte”, or “Cutler”. That’s all I’m saying.

by Doc's Sports Predictions Guy on Aug 25, 2009 10:08 AM CDT up reply actions

Well then

honest question… whats the rationale behind him being our best(your words), if, once again, he’s only played 15 games in four years, how can you make that kind of impact to be considered our best?

to me, thats like saying Wolfe is our best Offensive player.

by BearNecessities on Aug 25, 2009 11:39 AM CDT up reply actions

It's pretty simple

I didn’t say he was our best. I said he was our most important. Never, ever, ever insinuated that he was our best defensive linemen. Never said it, never suggested it. And, as per usual, this is just arguing and disagreeing with me for the sake of it.

First time I mentioned him I said I thought he was our most important lineman. I got trashed and nothing but but disagreement. This time I say that while we were better with him, it’s not the type of season-altering injury that one of our stars getting hurt would be. I am not getting trashed, but once again you want to play devil’s advocate just to disagree with me.

So make up your mind.

by Doc's Sports Predictions Guy on Aug 25, 2009 12:53 PM CDT up reply actions

and to answer you

We were No. 25 in rush defense (in terms of yards per carry) in 2007 and were one of the softest, weakest defenses in the NFL. Last year we were No. 3 in the entire NFL. While that clearly wasn’t all Dusty, I sure as hell saw enough to know that he was a big part of it.

Therefore, his loss is a blow. And it remains to be seen if we’re going to be Downy soft against the run again this year (like 2007) or whether everyone else can step forward and we can control the line of scrimmage and hold up (like 2008). But with our secondary looking the way it is, if we can’t stop the run or the pass it’s going to be a long, long season.

by Doc's Sports Predictions Guy on Aug 25, 2009 12:57 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah

i just realized this didn’t make any sense and wasn’t what you were asking. my bad.

But I do hold firm that he had a big impact last year on our run defense.

by Doc's Sports Predictions Guy on Aug 25, 2009 1:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Fair enough

all i was asking was how can the most important defensive lineman, not even play in a quarter of the games in his career

Really?

I argue that it absolutely will make us better.

For one… inevitable “done for the season” injury to Dusty is already out of the way… and his career as a Chicago Bear is likely done now. Thank goodness.

Secondly, it provides more practice time and game snaps for new talent (Jarron Gilbert), who may be a much better player than Dusty anyway.

For all the love DD gets around here.

He really hasn’t been the impact player that everyone makes him out to be.

Is he a nice piece to have on our line? Yes, of course he is. He’s got a great motor, and plays hard.

Is he replaceable? Yes, of course he is. We’ve had to replace him every season he’s been here. Time to move on. It’s not like the guy’s a perennial pro bowler.

We all know he wasn’t going to be a starter but there is nobody on the team who could fill his experience at depth. Do you think Matt Toeina is a viable replacement over Dvoracek? I dont.

Not too long ago... many of you were lamenting the loss of Tank Johnson.

We parted ways with him for specific reasons, and many thought that we lost this great player, and that we’d struggle to replace him. What has Tank done since then? He’s been a rotational player in Dallas.

We will move forward from the Dusty D era… it’s not the end of the world. We have as much of a chance at finding someone better than he was, as we do at finding someone lesser than he was. He’s not a Pro-Bowler.

his career as a Chicago Bear is likely done now.

I’ve got nothing against Dusty as a person. I’m just not surprised at this one bit. The man is fragile. Why do we want to waste a roster spot for a guy who can’t stay healthy. He lives up to his moniker of Mr. Glass once again. I mean if we keep him is he going to get hurt in the off season now? He’s been hurt in the first game of the season, later into the season and now the pre season. Good luck Dusty we hardly knew you.

I was a big supporter of Dusty last offseason, mostly because we needed to see if he could stay healthy. When healthy, he was a decent DL. Unfortunately, it’s becoming clear that he can’t stay healthy. Get rid of him and give the roster spot to someone who deserves it.

I'll say this about Mike Brown..

(from seeing him live) When he would close on receivers from the opposite side of the field it was pretty incredible. He is to this day one of my all time favorite Bears behind Walter. Just watching him in person you can see why his body broke down. They guy gave his all on every play. I still think had he been healthy he would be a HOF’er for the Bears I really believe that. He was the quarterback of the defense and I think if he were healthy during the super bowl maybe we’d have another trophy.

I'm Fine With This...

Even though I was a fan of Dusty a while back, the guy can’t be counted on to stay healthy, which is worse than a guy being maybe not as good but staying healthy all year long.

Plus, this opens up a spot for DT – Marcus Harrison and DE – Henry Melton.
I had one or the other making it before this, but now I see both making the squad.

by Homer-ism101 on Aug 24, 2009 9:48 AM CDT reply actions

We need that depth on the DL badly.

I don’t see the Bears keeping four RB’s, especially since Matt Forte is so good. Pretty much comes down to keeping Wolfe or AP.

WHAT? I’m sorry, but that is laughable, when a guy can’t break an anckle tackle to save his life. I remember 2 years ago, when we lost a game to the NYG because he couldn’t break through an anckle tackle when he had that whole side of the field wide open, it caused us a touchdown or at the very least a first down, we had to punt it and the Giants came down and scored to win the game.

Dusty finished 11 games last year. he started a 12th, but got hurt early at Minnesota. If you kick out the first Minnesota game (that bizarre 48-41 affair) then WITH DUSTY our defense gave up an average of 17.5 points per game in 11 games. That would have been the fourth-best total in the NFL. In the five games WITHOUT DUSTY we gave up an average of 23.2 points. That would have been No. 20 in the NFL. That’s not an accident.

Here’s how we were against the run with/without him:

With Dusty: 11 games, 280 attempts, 879 yards (that 3.13 yards per carry would have been No. 1 in the NFL)

Without Dusty: 5 games, 167 attempts, 617 yards (that’s 3.93 ypc – a sizeable difference)

And those last five games, only one came against a Top 10 rushing team. And three of the five were against teams ranked int he bottom half of the league against the run.

Without a doubt we’re not better without him. But, like someone else said, the guy is the Mike Brown of the D-Line. You just can’t ever count on him.

Thanks...

… for the data. Numbers speak louder than fan opinions.

by SC Dave on Aug 24, 2009 11:17 AM CDT up reply actions

sorry

My numbers for scoring were a little off.

WITH Dusty we gave up an average of 19.3 points per game
WITHOUT Dusty we gave up an average of 23.2 points per game.

The rushing stats were accurate and I thought they were the most important. We were clearly not a better rushing defense without him and the numbers back that up.

I argue that we will be better in the long run

Simply because he can’t stay healthy, and we’ve had to replace him in every season. It forces us to cut ties with a player who can’t be counted upon to be in the lineup, and find a new player who can.

Jarron Gilbert stands to benefit the most from this unfortunate situation. He’s our top draft pick, and now he’ll get the practice snaps and game snaps to develop and contribute much quicker. Will he stop the run as well as Dusty? Your guess is as good as mine, but Gilbert led the NCAA in tackles for a loss.

This isn't accurate

This story WILL most likely be put up here at some point this year, but its just not accurate yet.

Per Zach Zaidman’s twitter: Dvoracek tells me torn ACL report not true. He says the complete battery of tests not completed yet.

It's a damn shame, but we'll get by

It sucks that a great guy and hard worker like Dusty has had such bad misfortunes when it comes to injuries. But fact of the matter is, we have plenty of DT’s to make up for his loss. Besides Tommie, as long as he holds up, we still have Harrison, Adams, Gilbert, and Idonije can still slide inside if he needs too. It sucks to lose a guy like Dusty, but now Harrison and Gilbert can get extra work in practice and hopefully more than make up for the loss of Dusty.

by DetroitSucks! on Aug 24, 2009 2:04 PM CDT reply actions

Ugh...

Hopefully a miracle happens and the reports of the injury are overhyped and false… Otherwise, Dusty has been pretty good while healthy, works hard, but you honestly can’t keep on paying a guy who has season ending injuries in 4 consecutive seasons. This is certainly not good, but I do have confidence that Harrison and Adams will fill in nicely.

Possible correction to story and link - though the source is Lovie, so add some salt.

The Tribune reports Smith and Dvoracek say it’s only a sprained MCL

Nothing like another injury mystery for the Bears. Is there any strategic reason why they’ve always been so vauge about injury status? It sounds like people on their own team never know the truth sometimes, as this article states.

Dvoracek wasn't going to make the final cuts anyway

Sorry to see him hurt, but bottom line it doesn’t change anything for the projected defensive line.

Nope, he wasn't going to make the cut

Dusty Dvoracek has contributed jack shit in his time as member of the Bears. For a brief flicker of the 2008 season he flashed a reasonable ability to be a run stuffer. Whoopie. There are better options already within the organization and Dvoracek was indeed a longshot to make the roster. Now he will get an injury settlement and his chapter in a Chicago Bear uniform will come to a merciful end.

too bad

its sad to see he’s hurt. i’m of the mind that the more d-line men we have to rotate in the better it is. unfortunately i think if this is a season ending injury we have to cut him lose :(

Here's The Deal

Dusty was a nice run stuffer but we never were able to get pressure on the QB with him in the starting line up. Like I said, bye bye Dusty, have a good life.
