What might have been...

I just came across an article about the Bears/ Packers rivalry which seemed to reach it's peak on November 23, 1986. This story is about a particular Packers' defensive lineman named Charles Martin and why Jim McMahon described this rivalry as a "gang war." I'll let you all read it for yourselves but I thought it was an extremely interesting read about how our Bears franchise could be hailed today had this event not happened. It's funny how much the NFL has changed in 20 years.

Chicago's most notorious nemesis: Packers' Charles Martin

Frerakin' Charles Martin

McMahon was never the same after that. Ugh.

I've never seen the video footage of it.

Let’s see. On Novermber 23rd, 1986 I was just over a year old. I guess that would explain it.

I was nine...

And it still pisses me off everytime I hear a Packer fan say “Yeh, that was great!”

You can’t tell that if any of the Bears D-Linemen of the mid to late 90’s would have done the exact same thing to Favre, the entire city of Green Bay wouldn’t have gotten into their pickups and driven to Chicago with pitchforks and torches!!!!!

I remember that play...

it was not a late hit…it was an assault well after the play was over. But, then again, who remembers Charles Martin these days anyway. It was simply a stupid play.

There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots.

Having never seen it.

Did the whole Bears’ team rush the guy? It would seem to be one of those situations where the benches would be cleared.

The Hit

Going off of memory here. McMahon throws the ball and is standing watching the pass. Like 3 to 4 seconds elapse from the time he throws the ball. Martin the coward comes up from behind on a full out sprint. He then burries his helmet into Mcmahon’s back and burries him into the groung under his weight. McMahon hurts his shoulder and all Martin received was a 15 yard roughing the passer penalty. That SOB!

by Gesiakob on Aug 28, 2009 12:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Almost right...

Martin actually grabbed McMahon around the waist from behind and threw McMahon backwards on to his neck/shoulders about 3 seconds after the play had completed. Martin had actually completed his rush to the QB area of the pocket and stopped cold. Then he grabbed McMahon and threw him. Nobody can argue it wasn’t a cheap shot; it was so blatant and stupid. He was suspended for 2 games after the play was reviewed later that week. There was no fight that ensued, just some pushing and shoving.

There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots.

by LostInSTL on Aug 28, 2009 2:07 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yup,

I’m with you almost all the way. The Coward (and also late, I think I remember reading that he died a few months ago) Martin definitely grabbed McMahon from behind a good 3-4 seconds after the play ended, then proceded to use some kind of pile driver maneuver that slammed McMahon to the ground on his throwing shoulder.

Definitely more of an assault than a cheap shot. Also, besides the suspension he was ejected from the game.

There was some fighting that ensued after the play. Problem was, Martin had already been escorted from the stadium. The Bears O-line proceded to turn the game into a brawl for what was left of it. They kept cutting to commercial, if I remember correctly, so it wouldn’t all get televised.

by Fridge72 on Aug 28, 2009 5:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep

He should’ve been convicted of assault for that blatant cheap shot.

Charles Marrtin

He single handedly ruined any chance of the Bears repeating as Superbowl Champions. I remember that hit on McMahon like it was yesterday. He was never suspended for that hit. And that is complete bull*h*t and I’m still p*ssed to this day. The bottom line is the Packers are cheaters and I have no respect for their organization to this day!

by Gesiakob on Aug 28, 2009 12:47 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

It says in the article that

he was ejected from the game and suspended two games for what he did to McMahon. Not true?

by PolishSausage.Ditka.Bears. on Aug 28, 2009 12:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Like I said

It was a long time ago so if the article said he was suspended 2 games it must be true. He should have been suspended a year for that hit. It was so outside of the realm of late hit he should have had criminal charges brought against him.

by Gesiakob on Aug 28, 2009 12:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If,

a player did that today, there would be criminal charges. The whistle had already been blown and McMahon was well out of the play.

by Fridge72 on Aug 28, 2009 5:56 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It was an inexcusable play, but saying "He single handedly ruined any chance of the Bears repeating as Superbowl Champions"

is not exactly accurate. This was in the 12th game of the season and McMahon had only played in 6 of those 12 anyway. Also, the Bears record gave them a first round bye that year, so that play didn’t really hurt their chances that badly. They then played the Washington Redskins at Soldier Field where they had a 13-7 halftime lead but the defense gave up 20 unanswered points and they lost 27-13.

Again, Martin should have received a much stiffer penalty, but the Bears have no one to blame for not repeating but themselves.

Doug Flutie started that playoff game?

I think, “it ruined our chances” is a fair assumption…

True, but they also won the last 3 games of the season with Flutie at QB...

All I’m saying, and it’s been echoed by several of the players from that team as well, is they let the ‘85 season affect the way they approached their business and weren’t as prepared or committed as they should have been. McMahon reported to camp about 25 lbs. overweight because he didn’t work during the off-season. He even said in a 1996 article that he “didn’t think they made a calipers big enough to measure my body fat that year.” Steve Fuller and Mike Tomczak couldn’t get out of their own way, which is why they traded for Flutie in the first place.

Bottom line is from the coaching staff on down, they let success go to their heads and never were able to regain the magic.

That was Cutler's main reason for the McDaniels lovefest...

IF, Jay would have said ANYTHING negative about McDaniels or the Broncos, then there would have been bulletin board material. Since he wished the Broncos success and said McDaniels is an offensive mind, there should be less ill will from his former teamates

You know what?

I didn’t even think about that what so ever. I really doubt that would happen anyway, he never talked shit about Denver’s players and I’m sure he has a decent relationship with some of them. Besides, our line won’t let them get to Cutler and he scrambles like a gazelle. News Flash: the Broncos D SUCKS.

by PolishSausage.Ditka.Bears. on Aug 28, 2009 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dont know if Ive ever seen a Gazelle with a double chin

And I know he didnt say anything about the coach or whatever but I dont want to hear that Denvers D is not interested in showing him up for leaving town, especially in front of the home crowd. You think if Jay throws a 70 yard bomb for a touchdown on the first drive that the Denver wont get a little inspired to try some bullflop like that.
And its not the D sacking the Quarterback that worries me, cause that hopefully wont happen, its those moments when the play is away from him and some nobody is going to take a cheap shot at him that worries me. Ive seen that before. Or like if he throws a pick and he goes to try and tackle the interceptor and someone pulls a Warren Sapp and just obliterates him, its that kind of stuff Im concerned about. Im not saying it will happen, Im just saying Im nervous. And your jinxin it, so Im trying to unjinx it.

Did I ever say they weren't interested in showing him up?

Of course they’re interested in it, Cutler can be kind of a prick anyway and I’m sure he ran his mouth at some guys in Denver just like he’s done here so far but thats football. You should know this just as well as anyone else and not let your head get wrapped around the notion of someone obliterating him to the point where your concerned about jinxes and losing sleep over it. Your the jinxer here, my friend. You just HAD to bring it up. Go say 50 hail mary’s, slam a handle of Jack, and for god sake please draw a picture of exactly what a gazelle with a double chin would look like because that is funny.

by PolishSausage.Ditka.Bears. on Aug 28, 2009 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dont really get what your saying, your all over the place on this one.

First you say he probably rubbed guys the wrong way, thus youre assuming that a player or two probably dont really care for him too much on that team. Then the very next sentence you tell me not to worry about it. Not to worry about it. We are only talking about our FIRST FRANCHISE QUARTERBACK EVER. And thats putting it lightly, quite frankly. And he hasnt even gotten to play a regular season game yet and he already has to play in a controversy filled PRESEASON GAME (not a good mix to me).
This does worry me, Im sorry, and it probably wouldnt as much if the team in Denver had some kind of respect for him (kind of the way the Bears have respect for Orton), but they dont. And it would probably be tempered a little bit more if Denvers organization had any kind of class but with everything that has transpired this offseason over there that comes into question as well. This is a team in turmoil, I dont care what Bronco fan tries to come over to the WCG and tell us otherwise, I know what Im seeing, and I wouldnt put it past them to pull something cheap like that.
Hey you may not lose sleep over the fact that our new Pro Bowl Quarterback has to return to a place where he clearly despises, a place where he ripped the fan base, ripped the Defense (I heard it first hand at the EXPO), ignored the Head Coach and the front office to boot. Not to mention left every single player and coach in the dust as he fled off to his honeymoon with Chicago leaving them with Kyle Orton who has been booed constantly while he throws girly left handed picks and not gotten a very nice reception from his new Pro Bowl WR Brandon Marshall as well, did you see his work ethic in practice today, if Cutler was still there he wouldnt be asking to be traded, but hes worried his numbers are going to drop with the new QB in town so he wants his money now.
Like you said Cutler probably ran his mouth to a number of guys on that team, and you dont think that is reason for concern. This game means a hell of a lot more as far as morale is concerned to the Broncos D than it does Cutler proving to them what theyre going to miss. Hey more than likely nothing will occur and I will be thanking God when Cutler comes out of this game unscathed, but it is something to be weary of.
But dont tell me to not wrap my head around this. Cutler is, thats why he made that little PR move earlier this week throwing bouquets at the feet of a Coach he never played for (Or wanted to for that matter) and a team he clearly hates. Why the front, Ill tell you why, its because he and the Bears are just as concerned about something like that happening as I am.
Maybe you need to start slamming this Jack with me, maybe then youll start thinking a little clearer and not be so naive to think that Cutler is Bruce Willis in Unbreakable and the Broncos are this ho hum gee whiz team that wasnt hurt or offended that their Quarterback skipped town on them.
And yea I just HAD to bring it up, cause you just HAD to post a story of a popular quarterback in Chicago getting a cheap shot that ruined his career as it seems just two days before our new popular QB has to go back into the lions den. But youre right itll never happen to Cutler hes made of steel I forgot. And no why would a a player on that Denver D want to become a fan favorite in Denver bylayin the wood to a QB that everyone in that town hates. Trust me if they have a shot at him its going to have a little more juice than it would on some other joe schmo QB. Back to the bottle I go and my list will be finished on Sunday when you come by to watch the game. But its up to #685 now just so you know.

Football is 24/7 365 and its just as important today as it is in November or in the middle of May to me. Thats why we come on here every day of the offseason and talk about a sport thats not even being played. Now that we are in week 3 of the preseason I can taste it. If you think that was a mouthful wait till what I have to say when the regular season games get started. As chubbs would say “Weve only just begun”!!! And for the record, me and Jake aka PolishSausageDitkaBears have been longtime friends, there is no hostility between us especially when it comes to the Bears. Its just healthy debate my friends. I just like to be detailed in my conversations. It takes me longer than most I guess.

Martin wore a towel tucked into his waist

With the numbers of McMahon, Walter and a few others on there with an “x” though them. This was the height of the bad blood between the teams fueled by Packer coach Forest Gregg and Ditka. The rivalry today is timid on the field compare to that era. Hell nearly every game in those days was either a brawl or a flat out whippin’. Who can forget the Raider game of ’84 where Mac had his spleen ruptured and the Raiders went through 3 QBs. I know Marc Wilson remembers that game. He was carted off the field 3 or 4 times. Just brutal.

If Martin made that same play today he’d be suspended for a season.

The Sun-Times article is severely flawed.

Martin did apologize.

I’m quoting a Sports Illustrated article from the Dec. 8 1986 issue, written by Jill Lieber.

Martin: “I can’t shut myself out of my own head… I pick up the paper, there I am. I turn on the TV, there I am. What I did was really terrible. I’m sorry. I won’t ever do it again. But everybody’s making me out to be a major criminal, like I should be put in prison. I’ve apologized, but it doesn’t seem to matter, I’m a marked man. What I did will turn the players in the league against me.”

And a quick quote from one of our own, in the same article.

Singletary: I’m embarrassed by some of the flagrant things we do. We aren’t so pure."

Rehashing old stories helps to broaden our knowledge, but it needs to be done factually if you want to be taken seriously (Sun-Times)… I don’t want to come off like a Martin apologist, because I’m not. What he did was really terrible… like Martin said.

Btw, I came across this issue while cleaning out my moms storage unit. The cover (with a photo of Payton putting a move on a Steeler) reads -

BIG, BAD BEARS: Walter Payton and friends keep on winning… even without Jim McMahon

Not that it has anything to do with the Charles Martin directly,

in a game during the ‘85 season, Packer safety Ken Stills took one of the worst and latest shots I’ve ever seen. About 3-4 seconds after the whistle, he blindsided Matt Suhey who was literally just standing watching the players get up from a pile. Later in the same game (might have also been Stills) a player rode Walter out of bounds about 5 yards outside of the stripe. That game was one of the few times I remember Walter really get mad and start swinging at people. Forrest Gregg, the Packer HC at the time, hated Ditka and was a thug. He condoned that behavior against us because he knew they couldn’t beat us during the game.

I love this video.

The music goes well with the plays – plus, during the commercial – look how old those computers look! Lol. I wish I had been alive for the ’85 Bears!

I also

love the Colts game highlights where Sweetness runs over the ref. :)

I think the Fiero was prone to fires

Due to the location of the oil filter or something…..I also never had one but they were a pretty cool little car.

I was hoping

I could find the Charles Martin incident somewhere so you could see just how ridiculous it was. When it happened my initial thought was this ass clown should be thrown out of football for this it was that bad. I mean me and a couple of buddies were watching the game and we seriously contemplated grabbin a couple baseball bats and heading for soldier field to relocate Martin’s kneecaps for him we were so pissed. Fortunately common sense took hold of us when we realized that idea was probably going to land us in the Cook county hotel at 26th&California if we attempted it LOL

Another gem

This is from the Chicago Bears History site:

Quote of the Year: “I’d like to go get my magnum and blow his ass away”-Otis “Junk Yard Dog” Wilson, reacting to Green Bay Packer Charles Martin’s dirty hit on Jim McMahon

Wow I never heard about that until today.

My dad told me about it during the game tonight, I was born in 91 so I never saw the Bears back then. Does anyone have a video of it?
