Sunday Nights Game / Bears Vs Broncos / I Predict

1. Cutler plays no more than 1.5 Quarters and is not put in a position to get hurt.  Short routes and a lot of run plays.  Denver is horrible at run Defense.

2.  Kyle Orton plays the first half at least.  He will try and go long a few times on our decimated Defensive Backfield.  Afalava makes them regret the decision to go deep and comes up with an interception.

3.  Devin Hester breaks one for 50 yards or more on a Punt return.

4.  The Bears Defense holds Denver to 3 points in the first half.

5.  Matt Forte gets 70 yards and a Touchdown in the first half

6..  Final score:  Bears 27 - Denver 10

Hope You Don't Mind

Denver Fan here. We’ve been a little distracted in Denver by the whole Brandon Marshall soap opera to pay much attention to the Bears vs Broncos game.

Anyhoo, first…the game is Sunday night, not Saturday. I wouldn’t want you to miss the game! :-)

I think you will be surprised by our run defense this year. It is much improved. You will have much better success in your short and mid-range passing game. While Forte is really good, I doubt he’ll get 70 yards in the 1st because Denver has been shutting down the run games so far. Cutler will have a decent game, as always, but will see a lot of pressure. I am most interested in seeing how your Oline and WR’s perform. Your TE’s will be fine if not great. Olsen and Clark are very very good. But Knox seems to disappear in pads and Iglesias is still learning. I’m just not convinced yet that your WR corps is good enough to win your division. BTW, I’m an OU grad so I’m rooting for Iglesias’ maturation. I like the bears better than the other teams in your division, so I hope I’m wrong.

I did not know you were putting Hester back on punt returns. He’s certainly a threat there, if not as a WR.

A big question mark for me is your Dline. Didn’t you just lose a starter? Well, your secondary is good and will give our passing game a good workout.

The main stream media is going to play this up as Cutler vs Orton or Cutler vs McDaniels. I don’t buy that and I hope you guys don’t either. It’s da bears vs. the Broncos teams and the better depth team WILL win. Of course, I think it will be the Broncos and you think it will be the Bears, but hey! It’s only the preseason and it will be good for evaluating both of our teams. Final Score? Who Cares!!!!!

Cheers! Wish I could be in Chicago for a little beer and blues! What’s the name of that district a little north of downtown with all the great blues bars?

Thanks for stopping by...

how has your defense shaped up moving to a 3-4? I lived in SF during the ouster of Ericson and the start of the Nolan regime and I am curious who the NT and LBs are adjusting to the switch.

Thanks Lost

I used to live in St. Louis. Best tap water in the world! Great square pizzas, etc, etc.

Back to your question. The Broncos are not really running a 3-4. It’s more a 5-2 base defense with 7-technique players. You could say we still have a NT (Fields from SF and an very promising undrafted rookie named Chris Baker who is a monster), but the traditional DE’s on either side of the NT are bracketed on the line with what you would otherwise call OLB’s in a traditional 3-4 or the ROLB and LOLB in a 4-3. They are not off the line but rather they are on the line. The traditional MILB in a 4-3 is typically the LILB who you will often see at the far left of the defensive line. It has been a learning process for us Denver fans!

You should not think of last year’s Broncos when considering this defense. Last year’s DC Slowik was awful. This year’s DC Nolan used to be SF’s HC and has a long history as an extremely effective DC. We got rid of 3/4 of our defensive players and replaced them with extremely talented and experienced players and had 4 good draft picks (thank you very much). The LB’s should be divided into four categories: ROLB, RILB, LILB and RILB. Our weakside formations have been looking extremely good and our strongside need a little work in pass defense. Our safeties have been struggling a little because Brian Dawkins (a probable HOF candidate we picked up from Philly) broke his hand. I don’t know if we’ll see him in this game. Fundamentally I am more than a little surprised and extremely happy with what the team is showing so far.

Offensively we are picking up where we left off plus some. Denver’s running game will be effective, but you will probably not see as much of the zone-blocking schemes and a little more of the gap-blocking/man schemes because of McDaniel’s Patriots experience. Remember that our Oline and RB coaches from last year are still here. You probably won’t see our #1 pick Knowshon Moreno and that is a shame. He is an amazing talent and could very well become the face of the franchise. He was injured in the Seahawks game (I’m assuming in part because he was a holdout and was not in “game shape” for that game). It’s supposed to be a 2 week recovery, so we are all very relieved and hopeful he will be ready for the regular season opener in Cincinnati.

Another area of concern last year was Special Teams. Sadly we do not have anyone like Devin Hester. Who does? But the team has made significant improvements on special teams.

One thing Broncos are looking to improve in this game is our turnover ratio. We’ve not been doing a good job in that area. So you will probably see a lot of hard-hitting, helmet to ball tackling and ballhawking by the backs.

by Endzone on Aug 28, 2009 10:55 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

WOW...that's a lot to say...

I am stunned at the all of this because I saw the D-line and the LBs as the Bronco’s weak spots last year. Dumervil will stand to be much better in a DE/OLB hybrid that will be employed.

As Bears fans, we are interested to see how our line performs against a “non-4-3” front. Much like you say about the Bronco’s defensive improvement, the Bears O-line is much improved and will surprise you I believe.

To be honest, I am not one of those “my-team-is-better-than-your-team” type fans. I will look at the reality of what happens and make my judgments accordingly. I caught some of the Denver-Seattle game and I see some of what you are saying, but don’t use Seattle as a gauge. They are not a playoff team this year. I agree on your O-line, but they will have to work harder on their pass blocking because Orton is a statue.

This should be a fun game to watch. When I crack open my 4th beer (sometime around opening kickoff) I will toast you guys and get back to rooting against you! Best of luck this year!

There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots.

Last year ain’t this year. Vastly different personnel and scheme.

I too am looking forward to the game (might be 5 beers though).

They look decent so far..............

But we’ve only seen preseason vanilla offenses as you prolly know. There are times when they seem confused and times when they look great. Jury is out for me until at least midseason. How is your O-line looking? I haven’t been able to watch any of your games so far.

We gotta get nastier on D!!!!!!!!!

by Broncofan on Aug 29, 2009 12:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Oline

Broncofan, I’ve watched the bears preseason games. Their oline is kind of middle of the pack so far. Pace is not the dominant force he used to be, but their other guys are stepping up. Even so, they are nowhere near the calibre of Denver’s Oline and Jay will suffer. Just how I see it so far.

by Endzone on Aug 29, 2009 1:01 AM CDT up reply actions

We Lost Dusty..........

He was a good run stuffer but pressure on the QB was non existent from him. It will be interesting to see if your team has improved on Run Defense. We will find out Sunday night! Thanks for posting Endzone.

by Gesiakob on Aug 28, 2009 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Run Defense

So far the D has impressed on runs. Not so much on our weakside pass and strongside CB D. Goodman, our strongside CB, has had excellent coverage but has not broken up the passes when they counted. We initially had Reid at our ROLB, but he was not doing well in pass plays and so the team now has Haggan there. If we have a D weakness, and I hate to say it, it’s probably at our LOLB position. You will probably see a lot of strongside plays using Olsen and with Forte flaring to the strongside.

I wouldnt be surprised if it is indeed Cutler vs Orton slingin the rock around

Denvers D is still pretty soft. And I remember seeing Orton dinkin and dunkin all over our 1 team Defense last year in training camp. I say they both throw for a couple touchdowns.

Soft

Anytime, I think you will be surprised by Denver’s D. At least I hope so. So far we have been weaker against the pass than the run. I think you will see Denver challenged at our weakside CB (Goodman) and our weakside OLB and safeties. Olsen will probably have a very good game. (geez, I hope not)

As for the QB’s….we’ll see. They are both good QB’s.

OK

I’ll grant you that Denver’s D is still raw. Heck. They’re learning an entirely new scheme and 3/4 of the starters were not even on the roster last year. How many times have YOU seen a 5-2 base defense in the NFL?

by Endzone on Aug 29, 2009 11:36 AM CDT up reply actions

Lets be honest, I know its early but how many games do you think Denver will win this year.

I know this isnt relevant to your question, but to be honest I cant think of another team that plays a 5-2 base, so I guess that answers it. But I just want to gauge the hometown fans perspective.

Hard To Say

Because we have yet to see them in a regular season game. You might want to visit the MHR website and look at some of the posts predicting the season. http://www.milehighreport.com/

I personally believe 10-12 games is not unrealistic. I will be disappointed if they don’t win at least 8.

by Endzone on Aug 29, 2009 8:35 PM CDT up reply actions

that's ridiculous

You’re lucky to win 6. You lost your big play wide receiver that your ex-QB made, you have a new offense, a new defense, a new head coach, a new QB, a rookie RB…..

by EricEmpire on Aug 29, 2009 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Good Points

I wouldn’t say we “lost” our big play wide receiver. He walked out on us. Kinda like Cutler but in a different way.

Just because something is “new” is not reason to discount it. Being skeptical is a good thing, I’ll grant you. All I know is what I’ve seen in camp and the two pre-season games and I like what I’ve seen much better than last year’s team at the same point in time. The internet was “new” at one point in time and we’re still working out the bugs.

While you pointed out a new offense, we retained the RB & OLine coaches from last year. Our new HC is Nolan, a long-time NFL coach. Our “new” QB is, as you know, a 4th year player from your team and while he has a different skill-set from Cutler, he is proving to be very good. Our rookie RB is going to be spectacular. I’m older than dirt and have seen most of the great running backs going back to the late 50’s. Knowshon Moreno is going to be outstanding.

I could go on, but it’s all speculation anyway isn’t it? All these predictions are somewhat tiresome to me because it is inevitably only somewhat prejudiced opinion.

by Endzone on Aug 29, 2009 10:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Nolan was our LB coach

in the 80’s when we were experimenting with guys like Mecklenburg – one of the original 34 hybrid LBs. He’s been here before and agreed, it’s a new scheme for the Broncos, but it isn’t particularly complex. But it is very aggressive.

I seem to remember some issues with Miami 2 years ago: 1-15. They made some huge changes and it worked out for them. I don’t know for sure if it will work out for us; no one does. But I’ve watched the games. The Broncos are better than last year.

Reception In Denver

I think you will see and hear a lot of booing in Denver when Cutler takes the field. While there are some fans who still pine for him, there are many others who will boo him simply because he’s no longer a Bronco. Don’t take it personal. It’s not a Broncos vs Bears thing.

by Endzone on Aug 28, 2009 11:23 PM CDT reply actions

So BRING IT ON WCG!

I’ve spilled some of my guts on Denver’s strengths and weaknesses and what we may see in this Sunday’s game. What do you think?

by Endzone on Aug 29, 2009 12:05 AM CDT reply actions

And another Broncos fan shows up!

Hi Endzone,

Great summaries of the Broncos. I hope the Bears coaching staff isn’t lurking around here.

I’m looking forward to this game because of the new look to the Bears passing game. As Endzone so eloquently stated, we are running a 52 which provides a fairly stout run and pass rush from the front 5. The 7 techs rushing from the outside sometimes get matched up with an RB and they have a real hard time with someone like Elvis Dumervil (Doom). He’s under 6’ but has the wingspan of a much larger man – his hands almost reach his knees. The Broncos converted him from DE and we expect a lot of sacks from him this year.

We also have the 2 old HOF guys in the secondary (Dawkins and Bailey). I hope Dawkins plays, only because I want to see if his experience on the field helps out with our pass defense. I’m concerned about that, and not the run defense. That’s because of the inherent weakness of the 52: the outside seams and the flats.

That’s exactly were Olsen and Forte operate. With Cutler throwing, the Bears might present the worst matchup for us, and the 3rd game where we will probably play our starters for 3 quarters, gives us a great opportunity to find out whether the 52 is going to cover all of our bases (forgive the cross sports metaphor).

And sadly, I do expect that some Bronco fans will be booing Cutler; you have to expect that. But worse, there are going to be fans that are booing Orton. It just goes to show there are classless fans in every city. Try to remember that fans like Endzone are more typical of Bronco fans that the knuckleheads booing their own player.

Wherever you go, there you are.

BTW

Yosemite, love your quote. Brandon Marshall should learn something from that. But he won’t.

by Endzone on Aug 29, 2009 12:34 AM CDT up reply actions

Endzone Has Been Fine

I hope your prized free agent Dawkins plays better then your last one, Boss Bailey. Dawkins is a damn good player though. With the Denver Defense you only have one direction to go in and that is up. I really don’t see your new Defensive scheme shutting down Forte. I think Forte is one of the top 5 Running Backs in the NFL. Should be a fun game to watch for the first half anyway. We will see what Denver has. The days of the Orange Crush are a distant memory.

by Gesiakob on Aug 29, 2009 12:40 AM CDT up reply actions

Maybe, maybe not...

Things have a way of going in cycles. Maybe Orange Crush is coming back in style. Nolan, the DC, is a pretty good coordinator (although a crappy head coach – I live near SF). I think you’re right: we can only go up from last year. I don’t Forte is a top 5 back, though. http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/rb
Football Outsiders has him ranked 37. That said, he can break one at anytime and we know it: stats never tell the whole story.

The game will be the proof in the pudding. Good luck to the Bears, and here’s hoping that no one gets hurt.

Wherever you go, there you are.

by YosemiteSam on Aug 29, 2009 12:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Nice Link

What you don’t see in those stats is Forte was facing 8 man Defensive fronts most of the year. I would be remiss if I did not state the reason why. The reason he faced 8 man fronts is because none of the other teams were afraid Orton would beat them deep. And they were right.

by Gesiakob on Aug 29, 2009 1:34 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, stats never tell the whole story

But I would say that you faced 8 man fronts because of the Bears passing game and not Orton specifically. You had less than stellar receivers and and a suspect OL. That makes for tough times passing. I think that Orton checked down to Forte as much as he did because of necessity and not because he couldn’t throw a ball 40 yards in the air. But you certainly saw way more of him than I have.

I know you guys are talking about moving him back to KR. You should. He’s way more effective there. You can pick up WRs cheap this time of year.

Wherever you go, there you are.

by YosemiteSam on Aug 29, 2009 2:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Sadly

The Orange Crush was unbelievable. I remember believing that they could stop any goal line stand. And they often did. It was almost religious. We’ll probably never see that from any other team and if we do it will feel just as miraculous. I know Chicago has experienced the same euphoria of believing that their D can stop ANY challenge. I respect and admire your proud tradition.

Boss was injury prone. It’s too bad. When healthy, he played well if not superstar calibre. He was and will never be an elite player. But Dawkins? He is almost a shoe-in for the Hall of Fame. Seriously! We may get a couple quality years out of him and he will be invaluable to our rookies.

You’re right. The Denver D has nowhere to go but up. From what I’ve seen so far, I promise you and will lay odds that the direction is up.

Forte is a stud. Denver will have trouble stopping him. But I, kool-aid drinker that I am, believe that we will. Frankly, I’m more worried about Olsen and flare routes by Forte than handoffs to Forte. As gently as I can, let me say that your WR’s , esp. Hester, leave me unimpressed.

It could be that we see the 1st stringers play 3 quarters. Emotionally I’d like to see Denver crush Chicago, but professionally I want to see what the reserves can do in pre-season. So the final score of the game really doesn’t matter to me at all.

Watch Out For Devin Aromashodu

forte will be catching balls coming out of the backfield, more than rushing tonight. he was the leading reciever for the bears last season and he will be more effective doing this against a denver defence. aromashodu is going to be a great impact this season, he will probably be the leading reciever today

by stepeo on Aug 29, 2009 3:18 AM CDT reply actions

Forte

I agree. Forte was often catching balls on sweeps and flares last year. Don’t get on my case, but I think your Oline had a lot to do with that because they were not giving Orton enough time in the pocket for your other receivers to get open AND your receivers (with the exception of Olsen & Clark) were either not running good enough routes to get open or they just dropped the passes. Forte is an all-around great player.

by Endzone on Aug 29, 2009 11:39 AM CDT up reply actions

you are right the oline was suspect last year

and so was the wr core however, orton struggled making the right reads later in the season, and he was never able to bring opposing defenses out of 8 man fronts, we had to see it all year and so will you, hopefully your oline will do better against it than our did.

by leopoldjones on Aug 29, 2009 12:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Orton

Wasn’t he playing well the first part of the season and then came back from an ankle injury before it had fully healed?

I think many teams went to 8-man fronts was because your Oline got the reputation of not being able to pass-protect and so Orton was pressured so often that the team ran Forte more or threw to Forte on sweeps. Having 8-men up front helped contain Forte.

by Endzone on Aug 29, 2009 12:43 PM CDT up reply actions

you are incorrect sir

the one game grossman played saftey backed off, and of course the 8 man front was to contain forte, however orton was never able to punish defenses for doing it, it wasnt that he couldnt make the read he just couldnt throw and accurate ball longer than 30 or 40 yards. However after the injury he struggled making read, it might have been a mechanics thing though, you know unable to step into the throw.

by leopoldjones on Aug 30, 2009 2:42 AM CDT up reply actions

Oline

Am I wrong about the Oline protection? I saw a few games, admittedly not all, and thought Orton was not getting a lot of time in the pocket to throw. And you’re right. After the ankle injury I think he came back too soon and was less able to “step into the throw” which reduced his power and accuracy.
