NightLink: Bears Start Trimming Roster

First roster cuts were due tomorrow, but Lovie Smith and company went ahead and got the first round out of the way today.

Defensive tackle Dusty Dvoracek was waived/injured. Wide receiver John Broussard, punter Richmond McGee and long snapper J.J. Milan were placed on waivers. McGee performed well during training camp but wasn't going to unseat veteran Brad Maynard.

Final cuts to 53 are due on Saturday. Teams can begin establishing an eight-man practice squad on Sunday.

That means 22 more players will not make the final squad.  Head over to the Bears official site, and check out the roster.  Take a stab at who you think will be cut... can you come up with 22 names?

Bear Down, Chicago Bears!

I would have loved if the Bears were the Hard Knocks team this year.

I would love to see the inner workings of the Bears.

I don't know if the Bears WILL but I think they SHOULD

cut 25 more so they have room to bring in somebody else’s cap casualty at QB, S and possibly even CB.

No brainer cuts: Asista, Baldwin, Balogh, Burgess, Cermond, Deleston, Kinder, Louis, Malast, McClover, Peterman, Raiola, Rivera,

Slightly harder cuts that still make sense when you think about it: Hamilton, Turenne, Basanez, Iglesias, McBride, Tofu, Wolfe

Final round of painful cuts: Rideau, Freeman, Toeina, Jason Davis

Since Iglesias is a high draft pick, I don’t think they will cut him.

There is no way

Iglesias or Wolfe are cut. Draft status trumps all.

I think Wolfe SHOULD be shown the door. But I don’t think it happens.

Perhaps one of the two makes it, but both shouldn't. There's plenty of capabable STers.

1. Johan Asiata
2. Ervin Baldwin
3. Cody Balogh
4. Brett Basanez (We don’t need him, and even if we cut him and ended up needing a backup because of, gulp, an injury at QB, we could get someone on the open market (Kevin O’Connell? Is he still available? A.J. Feeley could be looking for a job?)
5. Josh Bullocks (He has not done much to stick, to me. He and Steltz should have had better coverage over top on that long pass in the game yesterday. Same old Bullocks getting beat as the last man of defense!) (Could be Steltz gone, but what about keeping and developing their own?)
6. Rudy Burgess
7. Joe Clermond
8. Jason Davis (should find a job, should be on the team instead of McKie)
9. Dahna Deleson
10. Michael Gaines (I’d be surprised if kept. We have two amazing TEs and KD is coming along in his second year, with great size.)
11. Marcus Hamilton
12. Derek Kinder
13. Kevin Malast
14. Richmond McGee
15. Henry Melton (practice squad player, didn’t show much in games)
16. Eric Peterman (practice squad player)
17. Donovan Raiola
18. Mike Rivera
19. Will Ta’ufo’ou (McKie, if up to me, would be gone)
20. Woodny Turenne (played okay, but I thought even on his end zone pass breakup in game 2 was a toss-up: could have easily not made play, and seemed surprised by ball being there. In other words, not bad – but not as good as McBride or CG or even Vasher)
21. Darrell McClover: (Signed as a body, but AP is staying and will play ST with Freeman, and Roach, Williams and HH are back-ups, with Freeman.
22. Garret Wolfe (hasn’t done anything as a RB, and needs to be let go. He will find a job. At some point his enticing speed can’t keep him around. He hasn’t done near what Sproles did for San Diego in terms of developing and showing his RB skills in preseason. Needs to really light up game on Thursday to be kept on my imaginary roster.)

23. Rashied Davis (I truly think he should be gone, but I can see us going with a highly-unconventional 7 WRs to start the season.
24. McBride (bc of R.Hood signing)
25. Lance Louis (Practice squad possibility, but otherwise the 9th OL)
26. Marcus Freeman (Think he’s more in danger than some others because he could make practice squad without being signed, but seems unlikely if only 22/23 cuts are to be made.

The Bears have proven they will cut a guy who was drafted high

but there is a limit to that. Wolfe has been here a few years. We got rid that LB from Stanford, Michael Okwa(o), he was a third rounder I think. The Bears still think they have something in Wolfe and to some extent they do, he is turning into a very good ST player.

2 QBs

I’d like to see Baz get the axe and the Bears roll with 2 QBs this year. Maybe it’s slightly risky, but really, would Baz be any better than anyone we can pick off the street in a pinch?

They can always pick up a vet during the season...

ff the worse should happen. I’m sure Brian Griese’s number is on speed dial, if that were to happen. I can see Wolfe going, well before Davis… Davis does look really good on special teams & I don’t think they’d cut Iglesias… even though I’m not entirely sure where he fits.

I also like Rideau & Aromashadu, mostly for their size. It is a tough call.

Do we have a reciever or running back that can take snaps in an emergency?

If the answer is yes, then go down to 2 QB’s, somebody will be available at if Cutler and Hanie go down, and if both are gone what kind of season do we really have? If Cutler goes down for like 2-4 weeks we might be able to survive the season with Hanie and some midseason pick-up.

How?

Is a future 5th-rounder going to help with our secondary this year? You can say what you want about Vasher, but he looked better against the Broncos than the previous games and has played at a high level before.

by propheteer on Sep 1, 2009 11:39 AM CDT up reply actions

It's not, but I don't think Vasher's going to help with our secondary this year either.

Right now, I think Tillman, Bowman, Graham, and McBride are all better options. Maybe we should keep him around until TIllman and Bowman get back on the field, but I think it’d be a mistake to keep him after week 6, barring some major injury. I think his value’s only going to drop.

by Poloplaya14 on Sep 1, 2009 4:35 PM CDT up reply actions

McBride, seriously?

He had an awful game against the Broncos; I hope he gets cut long before Vasher would be considered. There’s no guarantee Tillman and Bowman will be healthy for the entire year, and they may likely be out for the opener. Rodgers and company will absolutely “torch” the Bears if McBride is back there.

A fraction of one preseason game, or weeks of training camp? Since training camp started, McBride, from most accounts I’ve seen, has done better than Vasher. Plus, McBride is much more useful on special teams.

Look, I’m not saying McBride is great, but at this point, Vasher is about as useful as a buttered noodle.

I don't know about that.

First off, it remains to be seen if Hood has anything left. Second, I think Moore hasn’t done much to impress, so he might be left off the roster. Third, I think there’s a decent chance the Bears keep 6 corners due to all the injuries. I think that would be a mistake, but it might still happen.

Because the Bears don't have the luxury of dicking around at wide receiver

The Bears are already overloaded with “work in progress” and uncertainties at wide receiver. In fact, there is no clear cut “sure thing” with any of our wide receivers until proven otherwise on the field in 2009.

Hence why I think the Bears end up going with the following mix…Hester, Bennett, Rideau, Aromashodu, Iglesias.

Rashied Davis and Johnny Knox are on the outside looking in. And I’m okay with that. Knox hasn’t shown a whole lot to be perfectly honest. Iglesias will stick over Knox for the simple reason he is a 3rd round pick and Knox is a 5th rounder.

1. a TD in garbage time pre-season doesn’t mean everyone in the league wants you
2. Knox didn’t score a TD, he had one long bomb that he beat a rookie CB on

I think the league sees Knox as a work in progress just like the Bears do. He will take at least 2-3 years to be any sort of impact player on an offense. Just cause he is fast doesn’t mean the league wants him. I remember from draft day he was not on many teams’ lists of targets. He could end up on the PS

A good sign Knox will make the team.
Which receiver do you think helped himself the most in the Bears’ win over the Broncos?

Pete K.
Chicago

The three receivers who I feel are the top contenders for the No. 3 spot behind Devin Hester and Earl Bennett really didn’t do a whole lot in Sunday night’s win over the Broncos. Devin Aromashodu had two catches for eight yards, Brandon Rideau had one reception for four yards and Rashied Davis didn’t have a ball thrown in his direction. If I had to pick one receiver who helped himself the most, it would have to be rookie Johnny Knox. The fifth-round draft pick showed his speed and acceleration in catching a 43-yard pass from Caleb Hanie down the right sideline. I thought all along that Knox would make the 53-man roster, but I think that play will even further enhance his chances

Looking at it from who will make the cut

Here’s how I’m reading the tea leaves, not necessarily who I would pick:

DL – Ogunleye, Anderson, Brown, Idonije, Harris, Adams, Harrison, Gilbert, (Melton or Toeania) – 9
LB – Urlacher, Briggs, Tinoisamoa, Roach, Freeman, (Williams or Hillenmeyer) – 6
DB – Payne, Afalava, Manning, Steltz, Tillman, Vasher, Graham, Bowman, Manning, (2 of Moore, Hamilton, McBride) – 10
OL – Pace, Omiyale, Kreutz, Garza, Williams, Beekman, Shafer, (Buenning or Louis) – 8
TE – Olsen, Clark, K Davis – 3
WR – Hester, Bennett, R Davis, Iglesias, Knox, (Aromashodu or Rideau) – 6
FB – McKie – 1
RB – Forte, Jones, Wolfe, Peterson – 4
QB – Cutler, Hanie – 2
Other – 1 of Basanez, J Davis, M Gaines – 1
K – Gould -1
P – Maynard – 1
LS – Mannelly – 1

That’s 53 players. I guess you could add some of the defensive choices to my “other” spot

I think we only keep 3 RBs

and when the roster is cut down, I see only 6 OL guys (Shafer and Beekman as backups).

I think all of the LBs and DL guys you have listed here will be on this team. Harris’s knee is too suspect to not have extra bodies.

I see Rideau on the outs and I hope the Bears cut ties with Wolfe and keep AP.

Maybe Gaines makes the roster on the bubble or we keep Buenning as backup. But I see the D keeping Moore and McBride first.

For LB, make that Hillenmeyer or FREEMAN, as Williams is a lock.
For DB, make that 2 of Moore, McBride, Hamilton or Hood. And what makes you so sure they’ll cut Bullocks? I think he sticks with all the questions in the secondary.
For WR, I’d like them to go with 6, but I don’t know if that’s gonna happen so…
For other, make it 2 of Basanez, J Davis, Gaines, K Davis, Peterson, 6th receiver.

Can’t tackle, can’t cover. Corey Graham is bigger, faster, more skilled, and hits a hell of a lot harder. Why the hell does McBride play over him?

He’s just terrible. I really don’t remember the last time I saw him make a solid, physical tackle. I do remember a half-dozen or so misses, however.

Mine.

With 23 names, to cover for the addition of Rod Hood.

Low-draft rookies, unimpressive free agents and vets, and camp bodies:

Johan Asiata
Ervin Baldwin
Cody Balogh
Brett Basanez
Josh Bullocks
Rudy Burgess
Joe Clermond
Dahna Deleston
Marcus Hamilton
Derek Kinder
Lance Louis
Kevin Malast
Eric Peterman
Donovan Raiola
Mike Rivera
Will Ta’ufo’ou
Woodny Turenne

Harder cuts:

Michael Gaines – Odd man out at tight end. Kellen Davis has the benefit of a year in the system.
Brandon Rideau – No way, not after last night. Sorry, dudes.
Adrian Peterson – The writing’s been on the wall here for a while. Wolfe’s a better special teams player, and the Forte/Jones tandem is going to take most of the offensive snaps.
Hunter Hillenmayer – Low upside. I could see Freeman getting cut instead, but he’s got a lot of potential and is expected to do good things on special teams.
Juaquin Iglesias – I think that Knox secured a roster spot after burning that early pick from Denver last night for the TD. Davis earned his job with special teams play. And Aromashodu – whose name I can now spell without looking it up, incidentally – has been impressive and Cutler likes him. I see us rolling with five wide receivers, and I think Iglesias is out.
Trumaine McBride – Rod Hood just took his job. Otherwise he’d stay for depth.

I agree, AP is much better at special teams than Wolfe

They’ll both be kept for ST play, but AP is more solid. Rashied Davis will also be kept mostly for ST play too. I didn’t see much of him in pass situations but he was excellent as the gunner against the Broncos.

TE – Michael Gaines, Kellen Davis
OL – Cody Balogh, Johan Asiata, Donovan Raiola

Thats a pretty tough decision to make but I chose to keep R. Davis, Peterson, Anderson & Wolfe and cut Hillenmeyer, K. Davis and T. McBride.

whoops ...

offense was 28 … didn’t account for Mannelly in that tally. But, you get the point. There is a lot of talent on the team and I expect some very good players to be cut.

Not to rag

But NO WAY we take 7 WRs. I guarantee it and will admit it if I am wrong but 7 WRs is so overkill. I am thinking 5 WRs, with 4 TEs.

Six WR tops

Even with a pro-bowl caliber QB, I don’t think they’ll keep 7 WR’s. Knox did a lot for himself with the over the shoulder catch, so he’s in. I think that in the last preseason game we’ll see a lot of passes to Juaqin Iglesias, Devin Aromashodu and Brandon Rideau to select two of them. Iglesias seems as lost as Bennet last year, but he’s got a lot of potential.

In my opinion Rideau will edge Aromashodu by a slim margin and Aromashodu will be signed to the practice squad.

Nice job with the Rod Hood pickup

Our secondary needs help… badly.
