Quarterbacks in Skirts.
I threatened a longer blog about this but then my passion faded. But after watching the Texans vs Vikings, I am once again incensed. I think one of the lamest calls in the NFL is "roughing the passer". Why not just have "unnecessary roughness" for all? The NFL has an obsession with exciting offenses. True followers and fans of football love great defenses but they aren't "sexy" ( the defenses not the fans) and don't sell tickets. Seems most people want the sizzle, but not the steak. So the NFL, in its wisdom, placed a plethora of rules regarding the protection of the "MOST IMPORTANT POSITION" on the field. I'm not 100% against that but its really gettin g ticky tack lately. Just last Alex Brown was flagged for an essentially legal tackle that resulted in a penalty for, (and I paraphrase) "applying his full weight on the quarterback while making a tackle". What?? Excuse me? We need to tackle the quarterback more "lightly"?
But enough of that, I want you to know what I saw tonight in the Vikings game that really set me off. Brett Favre lined up at wide receiver on a play that became a run to the outside. He placed a crackback block on a Houston player that was both unnecessary and dangerous. He could have stood high and blocked with his body, but he dropped down and attacked the knee/ankle area. A flag was thrown and it was a 15 yard penalty but what really gets me is that is probably the end of it. Brown stated that he was afraid he might get fined for his legitimate tackle in last night's game. I bet Favre doesn't share that same fear for a far more vicious (and potentially career threatening) cowardly block in a game. Why?? Because the NFL now does everything it can to protect the quarterbacks of this league. At all costs. Even at the expense of the integrity of the game.

I can't recall when it happened but I believe it was a KC game
where the QB did a cubtback block on a DT, which resulted in the QB getting knocked out, but the DT got a flagged for going after the QB for the illegal block. Yep, QB can’t be touch but he can go after anyone he wants how ever he wants.

Don’t know if you’re referring to Trent Green with Miami in a game against Houston (Green got knocked out and sustained a concussion that knocked him out for most (if not the rest) of the season. The Houston player who got chop blocked by Trent Green was flagged for taunting I believe.

Thanks. That picture is worth more than 1000 of my words.
God, it STILL makes me mad. And Favre shrugged it off. I hope we TAKE HIM OUT!

Oh yeah my blood is still boiling
At least AP admitted after the game that Favre will probably see a fine sometime during this week. It wont be enough, somewhere around $5,000. They’ll blame the safety for not paying better attention.

It was Alex Brown who got the roughing call last night

Farve
may have a cracked rib, that’s what he thinks anyway, no link heard it after the game. But if he does, then he got what he deserved.

that cracked rib wasn't from tonight's game
it was from the KC game. They were reporting on it before the game started and earlier in the day.

Missed that part I guess.
Either way he’s still a douche.

I think its his fallback excuse
For when his play starts to get bad enough that the media can’t ignore it.

Maybe so,
but he is a tough sob. Arm surgery, rotator cuff tear, broken ribs… and he is still out slinging the ball around in the preseason.
I don’t expect Favre to stay healthy, but he might. Randy Coture has never been submitted in his career, and twice Saturday he was in a choke that there was no way he could get out of. But he did. Favre’s body is falling apart, but he hasn’t missed a game yet. Will this be the season he does? I expect it to be, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see him play the whole year.
Of all the things we can say about Favre… about his indecision, about the way he treats teammates, about how he is a drama king… he is doing something for a living that he was born to do. He is old as dirt for a QB, but he is doing what he loves to do, and has not been able to walk away.
Personally, I don’t blame him from not being able to hang it up. I’d play til my arm fell off too. He has made a carer as an adult playing a game that we learned as children. If only we could all be so lucky.
All that being said, piss on the Vikings, and double piss on Favre. Tinoisamoa is gonna eat him alive. And I can only hope that Afalava is able to clean Favre’s clock as well… just to show Favre that this is a young man’s game.

With the exception of the last paragraph.....
This appears to be a clear cut case of hedging one’s bets, or maybe not. Intentional? May very well be, but probably not. :)

Not hedging broski.
Just saying I don’t think Favre will stay healthy this year, but I wouldn’t bet against him either.

I know.
I was just having a little fun with your multi paragraphed comment, probably……….;);) …..just being silly. I also agree that it would not entirely surprise me if Favre completes the season as starting QB, but I eagerly await him to degrade into a back up long before the end of the season,

Guys aren’t allowed to tackle anymore… WTF?

Another...
instance that pissed me off is when Xavier Adibi got that roughing the passer penalty on Favre in the same game, when he basically stumbled into Favre after tripping over the Vikings O-Line.

Idea
Let’s just have the Qb’s wear flags so there’s no chance of them being hurt, everyone else can be tackled though.

Don't worry...
The NFL will just put the “Red” jersey rule into effect for the games and not just for practice.

In the Giants Superbowl run...
Didn’t a lineman have Eli wrapped up, then let go of him and Eli ended up completing a pass? The defender was so worried about roughing the QB, that he let go and it ended up being a positive play for the Giants. I agree that the rules for a QB are getting way out of hand.

I don't know about the playoffs but Osi had Vince Young
wrapped up once and let him go to avoid a penalty and he broke off a big play.

The penalty, roughing the passer was bull sh*&^.But what about the chop block Farve laid on Wilson.Just dirty, unnecessary, and wrong, this game isn’t a playoff game it’s preseason. He deserves a swift kick in the nuts no cup………..

roughing the passer
Roughing the Passer is like calling certain crimes “hate crimes”. Either the tackle or contact was legit or it wasn’t but slicing the categories too fine is ridiculous.

Yep
The roughing the passer call Favre got was absolutely ridiculous. Even the announcers, who all had their Favre goggles on, thought the call was ridiculous. I have a feeling we’re going to see these calls for Favre all year…
