Zackary Bowman Injured

Not sure the extent of the injury, but it looks like Zack Bowman is done for the day, as he was injured during 7- on- 7drills today.  We cannot afford to have any more injuries in our already weak defensive backfield.

I understand that it's not a serious injury and al

but I think him missing time will hinder the progress of both him, Cutler, and the receivers he going up against.

Injuries are part of the game

Millions in SF are up-in-arms over how hard Mike Singletary is working the 49ers.

He is even having the team do the dreaded "Nutcraker Drill.’ Oh God! Say it ain’t so, Mike. Don’t you KNOW that today’s players are soft?

No team worked harder in camp (and during the season) than the ‘85 Bears.
It was personal between Buddy’s defense and Ditka’s offense.

The players said that they looked forward to Sunday because playing the opponent was always easier than playing ‘Da Bears.’

The ’85 Bears (outside of Jim McMahon) had almost NO injuries during the entire season (perhaps they were in better condition——maybe they were just lucky).

GeauxBears:

In HONOR of you, I (once again) managed to work BOTH Mike Singletary and the ’85 Bears on a 2009 Chicago Bear post.

I HATE the Cards. Really. I love Warner & Boldin & Adrian Wilson. They are true warriors.

I think Whisenhunt is completly overrated. He himself, on a show called ‘Homecoming with Rick Reilly’ about Kurt Warner, got on camera and told Warner & Reilly that he thought Warner was toast (which helps explain why he CONSTANTLY named Leinart the starter over Warner the past TWO seasons).

That and a bunch of other things (like STUPIDLY passing on Adrian Peterson to draft Levi Brown) are evidence of his ‘being overrated’ to me (in fact, I was banned from "Revenge of the Birds’ for DARING to suggest that Whisenhunt wasn’t GOD).

Singletary? He was one of the greatest Bears of all and never should have been turned down for a coaching job in 2002 with the Chicago Bears.

I wish nothing but the very best for Mike Singletary (even with the HATED 49ers).

For everytime it’s worked, add ten where it doesn’t work. Busting ass is one thing, but another when your best players are over worked and/or injured. I believe there’s a happy medium between bustin’ your ass and being sensible during training camp.

Do some research

about guys like Jimmy Johnson, Dick Vermeil, Tom Coughlin and others regarding the way they ran camp.

All won SB’s. All ran a tough camp.

Not too many teams win SB’s because they ran a soft camp.

by GeoMak on Aug 5, 2009 7:43 PM CDT up reply actions

A lot of this is semantics...

running a “tough camp” shouldn’t be hitting just for the sake of hitting, but live tackling is the only way to really practice and perfect technique on both sides of the ball. What I think GeoMak is referring to when talking about Ditka’s Bears, Jimmy Johnson’s Cowboys, etc. is that they didn’t just make their teams do “run-throughs” during training camp the way Lovie did for awhile but actually put them through game conditions to get ready for the hitting and become better tacklers and blockers. If I’m putting words in your mouth, correct me.

by BearFan611 on Aug 5, 2009 7:49 PM CDT up reply actions

This is what I'm talking about

Gerry Philbin talking about the great Buddy Ryan:

I played under him at the University of Buffalo and with the Jets. It got mean, cruel. I’ve never seen anyone better at bringing the animal out of you. If you didn’t hit as hard as he wanted, he’d humiliate you in front of everyone. Guys like me loved him, though. He was just so brutally honest.

Football is about physical domination and a mental belief that you are superior to your opponent.

It’s not a GD dance recital.

by GeoMak on Aug 5, 2009 8:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Refer back to this part of my post
I believe there’s a happy medium between bustin’ your ass and being sensible during training camp.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for running a tight ship and bustin’ ass on the practice field, but I think it’s conducive for the team as a whole to be relatively healthy when the season starts.

"A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject." -Sir Winston Churchill

by propheteer on Aug 5, 2009 9:56 PM CDT up reply actions

You said
Singletary will have a hard time winning anything if his roster is depleted.

That sounds like injuries to me. You seem to be making a correlation between busting ass in camp and injuries.

I don’t buy it.

Now, if you are talking about the players being exhausted, that I can see.

In Dick Vermeil’s second season with St. Louis, the players almost went on strike because of Vermeil’s brutal practices.

They didn’t do that because of ‘injuries.’ They did that because they said they were so exhausted that they couldn’t even play with their kids.

Busting ass = injuries? Not to me.
Busting ass = possibly being exhausted? That I can see.

by GeoMak on Aug 5, 2009 10:05 PM CDT up reply actions

When I say healthy

I basically mean being 100% at the start of the season. If that includes not being “exhausted,” I’m for that as well.

I cannot believe

you’re still using “do some research” as your catch phrase.

Can we move past SB XX please?

by Allie on Aug 5, 2009 9:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Catch phrase?

I’ve probably said that two or three times in four or five months.

Move beyond SB XX. Yeah, you’re right. Let’s ignore not only the greatest team in Bear history, but the consensus greatest team in NFL history.

Nothing to be learned from those guys.

Let’s wax poetic about the Wannstedt years, or the Jauron years . . . etc.

by GeoMak on Aug 5, 2009 10:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Everytime someone says something you disagree with

it seems to be your come back.

And the only person here waxing poetic is you… and you’ve done waxed the poetry out of SB XX.

Which, if you did your research, you’d know was nearly a quarter century ago. I’d rather learn lessons from people who’ve won a SB recently. Like the Pats or the Giants or the Steelers.

Not from a game 25 years ago. Not that there isn’t good things to know from then… but you’ve beaten them into the ground. And it is beyond annoying.

by Allie on Aug 5, 2009 10:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Everytime?

Like i said, I’ve used it a handful of times.
Big difference between the two.

The Giants of 2007? Tom Couglin? He’s a direct link from Parcells to Lombardi.

Brutal practices.

Belichick & Tomlin. Those guys aren’t known for being soft (LOL).

BTW: Any Bear fan that gets annoyed by the greatest team in Bear history kind of makes me wonder.

I used the ‘85 Bears on a Bears blog as a direct counter to his claim about a team being depleted. Kind of as a ’close to home’ example.

If that great Bears team wasn’t depleted by brutal practices, what does that say?

by GeoMak on Aug 5, 2009 11:01 PM CDT up reply actions

They weren't wearing leather helmets back then.

The longest tenured HC in the NFL is Jeff Fisher. In 1985 he was an unofficial coach for Buddy Ryan.

Three others from that team (Mike Singletary, Leslie Frazier and Ron Rivera) are also NFL coaches.

Apply some logic here. Singletary was a part of that team and has been an assistant coach for the past six years.

I’m guessing that (after being an assistant in 2000’s) if he feels that his players would benefit from a brutal camp, then he probably knows.

He probably knows what he’s doing. He probably knows more than you (or me) as to what his team needs.

by GeoMak on Aug 5, 2009 11:17 PM CDT up reply actions

He probably knows more than …me

I find that hard to believe. He probably hasn’t done his research, and isn’t endlessly beating a championship game from over 20 years ago to death, so how can he?

by propheteer on Aug 6, 2009 10:54 AM CDT up reply actions

More to it that a tough practice

Championships are won on toughness, but it’s toughness combined with outstanding technique that produces the durability required to last in today’s NFL. Almost all championship teams ran tough camps, it’s true. Some of them were God-awful. But what makes the difference between running a stupid hit-happy wreckless camp and a solid, tough, hard-hitting camp, is the amount of emphasis placed on technique. If you run right, throw right, hit right, you’re gonna last a lot longer than if you just hit hard, run hard and throw hard. The amount of emphasis on bio-mechanics in sports of late proves this point. If you want to last, your technique has to be every bit as effective as your brute strength and desire.

by artroland on Aug 6, 2009 12:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Technique

I’m not sure whose ‘side’ you’re on here, but if you ever found a post of mine advocating tough practices with CRAPPY technique I’d sure like to see it.

by GeoMak on Aug 6, 2009 5:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Of course there's no guarantee.

When did I say that?

Never.

Of course there’s no guarantee. That’s an OBVIOUS statement.

Here’s what Singletary said:

“Singletary dismissed the suggestion that his demanding practices might be putting the team at risk of a longer injury list. "All I know is that football is a contact sport. It’s a collision sport,’’ he said. “Injuries happen.”

If you disagree; fine.

You can find that kind of attitude, starting with Lombardi in the Super Bowl era, through guys like Parcells and Vermeil and Jimmy Johnson and Coughlin and now Mike Singletary and many, many others.

Those results speak for themselves.

by GeoMak on Aug 6, 2009 5:42 PM CDT up reply actions

I’m not annoyed by the “greatest team in Bear history” I’m annoyed BY YOU! Always preaching at me about something that happened before I was was able to walk.

The last time my favorite team in my second favorite sport won a championship was a 100 years ago… does that mean I should wax poetic about the great IF of Tinkers, Evers and Chance? Does that mean I should look at them to figure “the true way” to win a championship?

No it ruddy well doesn’t. B/C the eras are completely different. Just like they are between now and football 25 years ago. Its an offense driven, finesse league now MUCH more so than it was then.

You also seem to think that there is no space between being soft and babying your players and beating them into the ground with “nutbusters”. Turn off your hyperbole machine and you’d get a better response. Or just go pound sand.

However, if you read GeoMak’s post right before staley’s:
He is even having the team do the dreaded "Nutcraker Drill.’ Oh God! Say it ain’t so, Mike. Don’t you KNOW that today’s players are soft?

I find it more than just highly coincidental that Staley decides to use those choice words in the very next post…. If not a shot, then something close to it. I think it was fair to ask what staley meant, considering the same word usage an unhappy face.

Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear.

The larger pattern

A hammy strain in and of itself is no big deal. The problem is this latest setback fits in with the larger pattern of Bowman being a player of tremendous ability who just can’t stay healthy, neither at the college nor pro levels. If he could stay healthy he could be our top CB before long. But right now he’s following the same disturbing pattern as Dvoracek, and others.

Yeah

its worrisome, not b/c the injury is serious, but b/c of who its too.

Also, Angelo is on ESPN Radio right now for those of you interested.

Be fair, though, it seems like a number of these promising DBs that Angelo has drafted in later rounds – the ones that we’re giving him credit for unearthing – were touted as early-round talents whose stock fell due to injuries.

I hate seeing hamstring inuries.

That’s one of those that can easily linger and affect the entire season. It’s not like it can be taped or shot up (at least not as effectively as other things), it just needs time that they don’t have. I just hope it’s just tweaked and not really pulled.
