Richard Dent HOF
Ran across this blog entry on the World Wide Leader. It's asking us to submit our comments on why we think Richard Dent should be in the HOF.
I for one can understand how he's been up 5 times and isn't in yet? The man dominated his position. Looking at his stats alone you have to put him in. I have no idea what the HOF voters are thinking but if Dent doesn't get in next year there is something seriously wrong with the system. I know of a certain WCG regular who might have some insight on this topic so as always your thoughts are appreciated and welcomed.

This weekend, the NFL Network has been playing its Top Ten Pass Rushers of all time,
it was filmed a couple of years ago because Strahan was still active, but Dent didn’t even make that list. They did have the immortal Kevin Greene at 6 or 7!!!!!
I have an issue with Linebackers like LT, Derrick Thomas, Kevin Greene, etc. being compared with true defensive ends and tackles. Those guys roamed all over the place and had very little responsibility other than get to the passer and most of the time they were one on one with RB’s and TE’s, not to mention they had a 2-3 step running start.
Dent should be in the HOF, without question.
If the show is about great pass rushers how could you leave out guys like DThomas and LT?
That makes zero sense. That they played LB does not make them less of a pass rusher. I have no problem with your frustration that Dent does not get more support for the HOF, but you don’t build Dent up by denying the pass rushing greatness of LT and DThomas. That’s just goofy.

You didn't read carefully enough...
I never said they shouldn’t be on the list of great pass rushers, I just said I have a problem comparing them with actual D-Linemen who don’t have the inherent advantages of being able to line up pretty much wherever they want to and getting a running start to the QB. My biggest problem is having Kevin Greene on a Great Pass Rusher list when you don’t have Richard Dent. THAT’s goofy.
Actually I did read carefully enough
it’s not as if your post was difficult to comprehend, quite the opposite actually. You think pass rushers who don’t line up in a three point stance are somehow different, even lesser, pass rushers because you believe they have an unfair advantage. My point is if the show is about great pass rushers, it doesn’t matter if they are down linemen or some sort hybrid like LT, they are all pass rushers.
As for Greene, he was a very good pass rusher for many years, I have no problem with him being part of a show on great pass rushers. Was he better than Dent? They were asked to do different things, for me it is an apples and oranges comparison.

It seems that you're contradicting yourself...
you say they are all pass rushers then your next comment is
for me it is an apples and oranges comparison
So by your own words there is a difference between down linemen and free roaming LB’s as pass rushers, which is exactly the point I made in the first place. You don’t have to agree, that’s your choice, but you can keep the attitiude.
You didn't like my opinion so you assume I didn't read your post carefully enough.
Talk about copping an attitude.
As for my apples and oranges comment, Dent played exclusively as a down lineman, while Greene usually played as an OLB. A DE in a 4-3 defense is asked to different things than an OLB in a 3-4, but one thing both Dent and Greene were both asked to do? Yep, you guessed it, rush the passer, making them … wait for it … pass rushers.

interesting read...
he sure didn’t have a problem calling out our D… hopefully they’ll take it to heart, and understand what it means to have a great like richard dent telling you them to earn their paychecks!!!

Nice Link GeauxBears
I agree with Richard Dent on all fronts. He was more then just a pass rusher, he was a more complete player. I don’t belive there is a person out there that believes the 85 Bears would have been as successfull as they were without Richard Dent on that team. I really liked what he said about the Bears team in 2009. If you don’t stop anybody on Defense you go nowhere in the post season. So we shall see if the Viqueens roll up over 40 points in a game on us this year. I hope the changes in the coaching staff greatly reduce the odds of that happening again.
The 85 Bears
have a couple guys from the D in already, so voters think that’s enough… but I think that’s B.S., he should be in the Hall.

Dent a HOFer?
I think a lot of HOF voters believe that Dent was a product of Ryan’s system, that he benefited from the chaos created by the 46 defense and got more sacks than he would have playing in a more traditional defense. So the question for the voters is did Dent contribute more to the defense than he got from Ryan’s schemes?

I would ask those voters you're speaking of,
Was Reggie White a product of Ryan’s system as well? After all, White’s best three statistical years were with Ryan: 86, 87, 88

The thing
that blows my mind is, There is literally no other side of the argument. Dent has the statistics, accolades and the fan support from other teams as well (not just Bears fans).
He’ll get in though, it’s just a matter of time. The problem is, he should already be in.
I am not sure why Dent is not in
the only rationalization I can come up with is the one I mentioned previously, that some believe he is a product of a system and wasn’t really that good himself, the 46 and all the talent around him made him seem better than he was.

Anyway you slice it, Dent's a Hall of Famer!
Let us compare Richard Dent to Reggie White and Bruce Smith (first ballot HOF members)
Dent: 15 seasons White: 15 seasons Smith: 19 seasons
Sacks: 137.5 198 200
Ints: 8 3 2
FF: 37 33 43
FR: 13 20 15
Tkls: 671 1048 1078
TDs: 2 2 1
Sftys: 1 0 2
Was Dent better than Reggie or Bruce? No, I don’t think he was better.
Was Dent as good, as Reggie or Bruce? Close, but not quite as good (IMO).
If Reggie and Bruce are first ballot Hall members (and they are), should
Dent still be on the outside looking in, considering he’s been eligible since
2002? Hell to the m****r fu****g NO and I think it would be absurd to answer
any other way. If you think otherwise, I would be interested to hear why…
I will briefly mention Strahan (Just briefly because there is a good link on that
comparison above: see Comparing Dent to Strahan (good job wilt!)
I believe Strahan will be a first ballot Hall of Fame’r. If he is, Dent should have been.
Got my stats from nfl.com and pro-football-reference.com
Sorry that looks like crap. : - {
I’ll do better next time (like the Hall of Fame Voters) :-)
Dent will get in eventually, for sure.
