Bears Tried To Land Another QB
Say what you will about Caleb Hanie and Brett Basanez, but maybe the Bears are still a little uncertain of their backup QBs. According to this article, we made a play for Andrew Walter, who recently signed with the Patriots (see #5).
There aren't many names that are left out there that are intriguing free agents (Bollinger, Dorsey, Green), so I wonder what will happen if Hanie and Basenez fail to impress during the preseason? Brad Biggs mentions that neither have stood out in training camp thus far.
Caleb Hanie and Brett Basanez have not done a lot to stand out a training camp that has been dominated by Cutler. Hanie has flashed his ability to keep plays alive with his legs, and Basanez has made the occasional throw. The test for them will come when preseason begins and Hanie is expected to receive plenty of work Saturday at Buffalo. Basanez is the only one with NFL game experience. He threw 11 passes at Carolina in 2006. Stay tuned.
Only six more days until Preseason Game #1!

If those 2 look terrible...
is Griese still out there? Not my 1st choice, but he’s a veteran that knows the system.
Any vet that does come in will know he’s not going to supplant Cutler.

I agree...
but I do not see that happening. I think Griese left on bad terms and has no love for Turner and Smith.
The only name I see that even intrigues me is Trent “Where am I” Green. He could spell Cutler effectively and be a Griese-like backup, but he couldn’t take more than a few game’s worth of hits. Honestly, Hanie is sufficient and should be kept to develop as a back-up specifically, not the long list of underdeveloped Bear’s QBs thrown into the mix who were simply not ready to do the job. Besides, there will be a few veteran QBs available as roster cuts are made before the end of preseason and the Bears, unlike many other teams can actually win without a legit QB. See the last 30 or so years of Bears games for reference.

If Cutler goes down the season is screwed anyways, so why not see what we have in Hanie and Basanez if that occurred.
If we’re going to lose I’d rather it be with our own guys rather than some reject off the street. I mean really, how much confidence would you have in any of the veterans available out there? There’s a reason none of them have been signed.

or Cassel to Tom Brady?
Even Injury prone Donovan McNabb in philly, nobody cares.

We can be proud of our franchise QB
and still try and get the best depth behind him as possible. Just because we have Cutler doesn’t mean that nothing else matters anymore.

Bill Belichick is a soon to be hall of fame coach who's won three superbowls
would you say he was concerned about “the best depth” behind Brady? Rohan Davey. Cassel. Testaverde. Flutie.(two guys who’s careers were at their end)
no. he didn’t go after the big names. he made sound decisions and took players that could step in and deliver.

I heard this same argument on Boers and Bernstein
And though I think having our starting QB is great and worrying too much about the backup may not make a lot of sense, I think it’s fair to find out what our option would be if Cutler went down. If we lose him for the season I agree it doesn’t matter, but say we lost him week 10 and we’re in a division battle with GB and Cutler is going to miss 2-3 weeks? I can guarentee the first word out of fan’s mouths will be “Where the hell is the backup”! I said it before, I’ll say it again, keeping Rex would have made too much sense to keep at backup. Too bad the fans wouldn’t have tolerated it.

sorry, But I'd rather take my chances on a guy that's been in the system a couple years(Hanie)
then grabbing somebody off the street. if they were so good, they wouldn’t be a free agent still, now would they?
Camp ifuwanna, we hold you in our heart...

Not everyone that's cut from a team or is a free agent is worthless, sometimes it is situational.
I agree that I’d like to see the better of the Hanie/Basanez dual get the snaps as a backup, but I would be much more comfortable with someone who has played at this level available if Cutler were to go down for a game or two. I don’t think anyone really believes we’re going to run away with the division even if Cutler stays healthy, so why not have some insurance? Dils is right, if we miss the playoffs by a game because of poor backup QB play, we’ll all be ready to string Angelo up by the neck. Don’t put them ahead of your young guy in camp, but a veteran as #3 instead of 2 completely untested kids makes a lot more sense.

a veteran as #3 instead of 2 completely untested kids makes a lot more sense.
No. It does not. a QB that’s been in the system longer makes more sense than a veteran who just got signed in the middle of training camp. I’d rather go with an untested kid who has potential rather than a veteran who failed to live up to his(see Patriots 2001 season)
you need not look far for examples. look at the 2007 season. Brian Griesie threw for a chunkload of yards, but wasn’t more effective than Grossman because he turned the ball over just as much. when they went with Orton, it was too little to late as injuries had already taken their toll on the team. but even as a third stringer with a horrendous rookie season, Orton was more effective than the veteran Greaseball.

we'll continue to disagree on this
Basanez has only been in the system a few months. A veteran can pick up enough in a few weeks to be usable.

Then you're saying exactly the same thing I said in the first post!!!!!
Don’t put them ahead of your young guy in camp, but a veteran as #3 instead of 2 completely untested kids makes a lot more sense
.
I never said put a veteran ahead of Hanie, but having one on the team in case of an emercency is better than having 2 kids who have no experience.

I agree that I’d like to see the better of the Hanie/Basanez dual get the snaps as a backup, but I would be much more comfortable with someone who has played at this level available if Cutler were to go down for a game or two.
your words have confused me.

by ifuwannacrownem on Aug 10, 2009 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
You're right, I wasn't real clear on that...
what I meant was that I prefer Hanie, but I’m not the one making the decision, so I’d like to see them decide on which of the young guys they’d like to see as the #2(hoefully Hanie), then go out and get a veteran for the emergency slot.
by BearFan611 on Aug 10, 2009 3:34 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I can see that
but I’d rather go with Hanie (who has similar tools to Cutler and can use the same playbook) then with a “veteran”.
If Cutler goes down for an extended period, we’re screwed anyway. I’d rather have Hanie get the experience in that case then have to watch Griese again.
by Allie on Aug 10, 2009 2:58 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
I just think that if it comes down to a 1 or 2 game stretch that might be the difference between going to the playoffs or sitting at home, AGAIN THIS YEAR, I think a veteran gives you a better chance to bridge that gap.
by BearFan611 on Aug 10, 2009 3:36 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
If Cutler sprains an ankle
and is out for a week, you can go Orton “game manager” with Hanie and give a huge dose of Forte/Jones.
I think we’d be fine for a week or two of that.

Rex would have been a wonderful back-up. He’s not good. But he knows the system and we’ve won with/in spite of him. But there is no way the fans would have allowed that.

but you see what happened to tom brady week one? our team isnt all around solid like the pats YET or look at the cowboys who were doing well but romo is out for a month season gets screwed

Pick up Michael Vick as a Back-up
The Bears should make a play for Michael Vick. He needs a home and some team to give him a chance. Plus he is better then any back-up you can think of right now. Tell me what you think…good or bad.

you have players who have killed people
Who are still in the nfl but nobody wants to let Vick back in when he served a real sentence not some short term slap on the wrist because I’m a celebrity sentence. He has good value as a back-up because you can put him in for the wildcat and things like that.

Unfounded that he is "still a good QB"
I’m pro dog/animal lover. I’m not against Vick getting a second chance. It’s debatable that Vick was ever a “good enough” QB. It’s very questionable as to how he will be able to perform before getting the rust off or while getting the rust off. I think he should be used elsewhere. A “slash” type player would suit him better…I think. What do I know?

Griese
If something were to happen to Cutler, I’m sure Griese would be in a Bears uniform the next day.
I am excited to see what Hanie can do in the pre-season and think it is best you give the time to the young guys to see if there is anything there. Although Hanie doesn’t have the arm strength that Cutler has, he does have a similar escapability, that would mean the playcalls/game plan wouldn’t have to change drastically with him in.
If Cutler were expected to miss significant time though, I’m sure Griese would be called in, and Hanie would be on a short leash.

#4
- is still out there. Let’s face it, that laid back hillbilly is still training because he only wants to play 8-12 games this season. He’ll be ready to step in by week 4 if a team needs him. I’m still dreaming of the headline that reads “Favre, Bears, destroy Packers 52-3”
by IndiaSummer on Aug 9, 2009 3:57 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
It depends on the situation.
If the Bears are 5-0 and Cutler suffers a season ending injury, then one of these two back-ups will get one chance to take over the team. The Bears have a long history of limited success with inferior Quarterbacks. But if Brett Favre is still out there, a mid-season return to the NFL isn’t out of the question. If the Bears have a losing record and Cutler gets injured, there’s no way they bring in a new QB.

We have
a number 1 QB, instead of getting a “veteran” who has seen a real NFL game, why dont we go with what we have, Hanie looks decent so far, and maybe address the areas that dont have players that are doing awesome in their position (see wide receiver/safeties/corners)
Cutler isn’t going down this season(knock on wood)
Michael Vick would be poison on this team, and we completely aren’t built for him anyways.
Favre? uh… yeah, no.
