Pick Your Starting Safeties
We all know the official depth chart on the Bears website is more like a guide than anything. Right now they have Al Afalava listed as the starting strong safety (with no one listed at 2nd string) and Kevin Payne listed as the starting free safety, with Josh Bullocks listed #2 and Craig Steltz listed #3. No sign of the practicing Danieal Manning? I know the plan is for him to play some nickleback, but wasn't he being sold to us a while there as the starting free safety?
Anyway... Who do think should get the starting nod for the season?

I hope the bears get this one right.
You have gotta put Afalava at strong safety, too much of a risk to move him to free safety in an unknown position for him. Payne can handle the transition better considering he already has a year of NFL football under his belt. Plus I like what Ive seen from Afalava as far as filling up those gaps, hes really aggresive. And Payne did some nice things in coverage as well in some of the preseason games, like when he broke up that pass from Eli, nice closing speed.
And the main reason for all of this is because Manning is BEST suited for the nickel, it has less responsibility as far as playing time, which is key if he is going to be our return man. Plus he made some nice picks last year in the nickel, and we need all the help we can get covering these WRs.
(ENTER TANGENT) I love how everyone says Hester cant be on offense and be a return man and still be effective but yet no one has a problem with Manning playing most the snaps on Defense and being a return man, it just doesnt make sense. I think returning is all about confidence. And dont give me that well Hester said it wore him out, cause I dont buy it, if he would have housed one early last year, his confidence would have been soaring but he didnt and that led to Manning being put back there.
Thats why Im hoping that Denver preseason return has boosted his confidence and he can get back to being the most dangerous player in football. (TANGENT DONE)

um,
my assumption for the difference between offensive and defensive players returning kicks is when they play in relation to when they return the kick. when a wide reciever returns a kick, he immediately has to enter the huddle and take snaps with the offense. if a defensive player returns a kick, he then as time to rest before the defense returns to the field.
by BearockWay on Sep 10, 2009 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
so manning should be tired
because right before the kick he would be on the field playing defense. manning shouldve been pooped, yet last year he was able to return one to the house.
on the other hand, hester should be fully rested cuz the offense would be on the sidelines until the kick. but even then, he never got a touchdown. you could say he was trying to conserve energy for playing wide receiver, but i doubt it. like anytime said, confidence has more to do with returning kicks than being tired or anything else.

unless...
Manning is playing Nickle and the opposing team scores and then has to go back and return the kickoff.
It could be an easy or difficult transition from either the offense or defense to returns. If Manning was in and was chasing a player down the sidelines for 80 yards, he probably wouldn’t be the best option to return the kickoff on the very next play. Just as Hester would not probably be the best option for a deep bomb after he ran back a 50 punt return out of our endzone. If niether Manning or Hester was really envolved with the play prior or following the return, it probably wouldn’t be that big of a deal.

Not to mention the one Manning did return to the house was on the opening kickoff....
Not after the defense gave up the score.
Like I said, its about confidence, if a player is not returning one, its not cause hes fatigued, its because he isnt seeing the hole right, like when you are all confident and in the zone and the holes open up like the Hudson river.

Yea but when a defensive player returns one...........
It is immediately after the defense is on the field, so wouldnt you think that would be more of correlation of being tired as opposed to an offensive guy getting rest and then returning a kick. Everyone said he looked tired on returns not on offense. My thoughts exactly puppet.

Who Hester or Manning.............
Cause my bet is you are talking about Hester, but I dont seem to remember a game where Hester caused us to lose cause of a fumble, sort of the Manning cost us the game when he fumbled a kickoff return against the Texans.

last year
Manning had vaseline on his arms to protect himself from the cold, he said he didn’t realize it would effect his KO returns… this was right around the time he took over as the #1 returner

I'm not sold on any of them yet.
Kevin Payne has a tendency to over pursue and I’ve even noticed him hit his own teammates. I noticed in the last preseason game on that goal line stand after Urlacher made a nice stop with Briggs that Payne was way out of position causing the running back to walk in for the score.
I guess I’d still take Payne over Manning but they need to either sign a FA next season or draft a FS.
I’m looking forward to watching Al play. In the last few games he hasn’t stood out like in Buffalo but I can’t wait to see him lay some wood on Donald Driver.
I still think they should have brought back Mike Brown until he just falls apart.
I have seen a QB and it was good.

I thought he already did...
even when he played last year, he wasn’t very good. Payne was easily the best safety we had last year, and he should still be. He overpursues a little, but so do Polamalu and Bob Sanders, and while I’m not saying he has Polamalu’s ball skills or Bob’s devastating hit power, he has good hands, hit pretty well (and tackles properly), and seems to know what he’s doing.
I’d take that over Danieal any day.

I'd like to see Payne wrap better, but he's improved
I think Manning and Payne are the best duo, with Afalava coming in when Manning goes to the nickle

I don't like Payne
On every big play against us, he seems to either be out of position or missing a tackle. I just do not like him and believe that he is the weakest link on our defense. Let’s start Manning (because he is fast and a decent tackler) and Afalava (simply because he isn’t Payne).
by SenatorSteve on Sep 10, 2009 2:05 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
gut
My gut says start Manning at FS, but no matter who we start, someone is going to try to exploit that as a weakness until someone proves they can make plays.

It has to be Afalava and Payne, period!
Our safety position will look it’s best with Al Afalava starting at SS and Kevin Payne at FS. I can’t believe that our later round draft picks have been tearing it up! Johnny Knox (5th round pick) and Al Afalava (6th round pick) have looked like studs and deserve a starting job. Afalava has been making big tackles and big plays since been playing with the Bears both on defense and special teams. Hes been the biggest stand out to me on defense this preseason along Pisa Tinoisomoa. The kid is pretty stocky and buff for a safety and for a rookie period, and i like it! His intensity is great and hes a real vicious tackler, something we’ve been missing at the safety position for a while. I’ve also been impressed with Kevin Payne lately as well. He had a so-so season last year trying to get back to being 100% from a back injury and has looked much better this preseason. Providing good pressure at the line to the QB, breaking up passes and making great tackles. Him and Afalava have good chemistry together and feed off eachother’s energy. If anyone followed the Bears preseason as much as I did, you would notice that the safeties (Payne and Afalava) did their job on every play of every game. Not one big play or opposing touchdown was because of Payne or Afalava not doing something right. I seriously think these two can become a scary safety tandem this season and I personally believe Afalava is going to knock someone out this season too. Only problem I have is that Daniel Manning probably has more speed to track down the ball to prevent a touchdown than Al Afalava does but I’d still rather have Payne and Afalava in the back field just because I feel more confident with them back there. Plus, Afalava has started with the No.1 defense all preseason and has gotten all the reps over Manning. Don’t Bear fans want to see Manning save all of his energy for kickoffs? I sure as hell do! He tore it up last season and should do even better this season! Bear Down!

I agree with you completely....................
But if you broke it up into paragraphs it would make it a much better read:) I think im dyslexic, I get lost in long paragraphs, my eyes tend to wander. BEAR DOWN
Do you think Manning will return kicks this week, coming off his hamstring problems, I think it would be funny to see them spring Hester out there once just to screw with them, maybe do one of those fake reverse handoffs with Manning.

I agree with your agreement
Payne and Al- period.
Manning is very good at nickel. Really, really good. And if the Bears rush defense is as good as we think it will be, he’ll be on the field in plenty of 3rd and long situations.
Manning got caught way to many times being out of position last year at safety for me to even consider putting him back there this year, especially when you consider how well Payne and Al played during the preseason.

pass
afalava is a great hitter but we were very good against the run last year anyway what we need is speed at one of the safety spots to help our pass corners and to be honest all 3 of em will probably be on the field together quite a bit this year anyway…besides itz all about how the d line plays the better they do the better our whole secondary looks

We have two hard hitting Safeties back there
and that should strike fear into WR, especially come cold months at home

Given the problems that we've had in pass defense...
I think you have to go back to Manning at free safety. He’s one of our best athletes with the speed and range to play the deep position. Pass defense was the reason we missed the playoffs last year and lost several close games, including the last second debacle in Atlanta.
On the strong side – if Afalava isn’t ready to start over Payne this year, then he should definately be ready to take over next year. Having 2 quality strong safeties is a nice problem to have.

I went w/ payne and afalava
but I think we’re basically playing two Strong Safeties. I don’t know what Manning’s health looks like right now. If he’s healthy, I like him and and Payne as the set. One thing I don’t like about Manning, though is his tackling, and he seems to get caught with his eyes in the backfield…
One thing, I don’t think has been said is that in the Cover 2 we run there is a major hole along the seam behind urlacher. My fear is not so much the deep ball as it is the TE on blitzing packages or quick slants from the slot position. I feel like without the range of a true FS we allow the potential to get eaten up in the ways Jerry Rice killed the seam and slot for big plays.

Payne/Afalava
If Manning didn’t go down with that hamstring in training camp, I would have like to see him back there with Payne and have Graham take over Nickelback. Payne is not that bad at FS through I do worry a bit about his range at FS. We should play Payne and Afalava the start of the season and just ease Manning into that FS role as the season goes on.
