Brian Urlacher out for year

Brian Urlacher is potentially out for the season. Courtesy Chicago Tribune

Brian Urlacher appears to be out for the season after dislocating his right wrist, the linebacker said Monday. The team has not given the official word, but Lovie Smith is expected to address the issue during his afternoon press conference.

Urlacher injured his wrist in the first quarter of Sunday's 21-15 loss to the Packers. He was ruled out after halftime.

When asked about his status Monday, Urlacher said in a text message that his ``season is over.''

He was scheduled to undergo surgery Monday morning upon the team's arrival back in Chicago from Green Bay. A dislocated bone had to be surgically put back in. The surgery might have revealed more extensive damage.

The Bears defensive co-captain and team leader entered the season healthy again coming off back and neck injuries. He had three tackles before leaving Sunday's game. Hunter Hillenmeyer replaced Urlacher in the lineup Sunday.

The Bears might have to consider moving Lance Briggs over to middle linebacker to fill Urlacher's void. Starter Pisa Tinoisamoa also might be sidelined for a bit after spraining the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Nick Roach stepped in for Tinoisamoa.

``We can think about it,'' Tommie Harris said of life without the injured linebackers. ``We just have to go with the guys we have. It's a long season. They need to get healthy and get back out there. We're going to miss them if they miss time. But that's why the guys behind them get paid just like they do.''

I would have to agree

But unless last nights game was a total fluke, which I don’t believe it was, it would appear that you have some other concerns than just Urlacher being potentially out for the season.

by Figgs on Sep 14, 2009 1:38 PM CDT up reply actions

what wasn't a fluke?

the toal offensive collapse in the first half?

by mike b on Sep 14, 2009 1:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

That. And Vasher, And route running, Cutler, and O-Line (not sure which was covered in your offensive collapse reference). Still too soon to tell though – could have just been an awful time to have a bad game.

by Figgs on Sep 14, 2009 3:39 PM CDT up reply actions

well

if you think that will be the norm, i can see how that would fit your interests, but considering just how bad it was i think most people would be skeptical.

I'm not sold on it being the norm

Like I said, I’ll wait to see a few more games before I can make any real decisions or opinions. I think my “fluke” comment was incorrect – I misstated.

Good thing we have some depth

It sucks to lose the team captain on D, but what you gonna do? It’s football…

I wonder if Freeman, Malast or Rivera will be picked back up… I don’t know if they are available even, frankly didn’t pay attention after they were bounced.

In all honesty I can not blame them

I mean they are denver fans first and foremost so they can revel in this….“their” team won and Cutler looked bad with the 4 INTs….I can only imagine that some wet their pants with glee on that….

Heck even the Bear fans that have orton > Cutler are loving this (though some of those could be purdue fans or denver fans posing as Bear fans)…Seen some posts about how all orton does is win and all Cutler does is lose….so eh….

Still 15 more weeks left in the season….I remember 2003 when the pats traded bledsoe to the bills and in week one of that season the bills destroyed the pats 31-0….the pats only went on to make the playoffs and win the super bowl….Heck even in 05 the Bears started out 1-3…so still long ways to go….

He would just add depth that we are gonna need now. Jamar on the weakside, Briggs in the middle, and Roach on the outside until Pisa gets back and then who knows how they will do it.

It’s a good post, highly news worthy and all that. I just don’t want to stare at this in the side bar for two straight weeks. It pains me too much to see.

Saying that… this will hurt it, but won’t kill our season. I’m not one for players shifting positions, but what if they move Briggs to the middle, have Roach and Williams on the outside. That’s is if both Urlacher and Pisa are out, of course.

Actually...

You saw your team play very badly for most of the game against an appallingly bad Browns team.

I saw that Adrian Peterson (the REAL Adrian Peterson, not that fake one we have) is a total stud.

I saw Brett Freaking Faaarrrrrrrrvvvvvvrrreeeee lined up as your quarterback looking old and slow.

Your D played OK but not well against one of the worst teams in the league, and your offense was anemic with the exception of Peterson (who is, I regret to admit, the best there is).

Don’t read too much into it, brudda. AP pulled you ahead of a horrible team. That doesn’t a season make.

7 of which was after we pulled our starters.

If that’s playing OK, I can’t wait to see good.

Favre looked about as out of sync yesterday as Cutler looked last night. Difference was that instead of forcing trhrows, Favre just took the sack.

Holy carp, I’m defending Brett Favre. That’s so freakin weird.

It’s going to take both QBs a few weeks to get onto the same page with the rest of their offense, but once they do, it should be pretty good.

I’ll admit this does look bad. However, our defense didn’t look that much worse after Urlacher went out last night. Our secondary looked bad all night (i.e. Vasher). Our D-Line looked so rejuvenated, so STRONG! And that was against the best WR combo we’ll play all year. Without Urlacher, we’ll probably give up a little more on run yards. But man o’ man A-Brown & Adewale looked FIERCE last night! This can either hurt them, or help them. It only hurts if they let it hurt.

They can move Briggs to the middle and play Williams and Roach on the outside

If Urlacher is out for the season, it hurts their run defence a bit, but they’ll be okay overall – especailly if last night is any indication of how the line is capable of playing. I think the team is probably deeper at linebacker than at any other position…

I’m much more concerned about getting Tillman and Bowman both healthy and on the field. Was anyone watching Vasher in coverage last night? That was pretty terrifying, to say the least… His game has really dropped off in the past couple of years!

REASONS WHY THE SEASON IS NOT OVER!

Look the Bears gave up only 21 points last night. 10 in the first half, 11 in the second.
Seven of those points came off a gimme turnover.
Packers have the toughest wideouts the Bears will face all season.
Bears had 4 sacks last night. They only had 28 all last season.
Cutler looked shaky, but you have to admit that there was a point when he looked so good it looked like we might win.
Mannelly will never do that again.
We play the Packers on December 13 in Chicago.

This will be a fun football season.

The Bears got really lucky GB either dropped the ball or were over thrown.

everyone wanted to trade urlacher before the season

Now everybody is chicken little. Someone else will step up. I’m more worried with our reciever and cb play than anything. Dez Clark blew a td and every wr seemed to quit halfway thru the play. Green Bay may live up to the hype so losin by 6 with 4 int. aint the end of the world. Plus that f’d up punt. And Ron Turner needs to go. Worst playcallin ever.

I agree to an extent, however I am not sure the word everyone applies. I happend to believe Urlacher has played his best ball. Doesn’t mean he couldn’t play at a high level just happen to think his best days have come and gone. The bright side, if there is one…is that the backups held their own last night. I still believe that defense rides with Tommie Harris.

I think they will sign Brooks as well. Unlike alot of people, I think he would fit in nicely. He may be old but he know’s the system and is a smart player.

Brooks is a Tampa 2 OG – I would take a veteran MLB who spent a lot of time in that defense over fresh legs with no clue how people need to line up.

Brooks has never missed a game in his

great NFL career. However, last year he had a very subpar season. Still, it wouldn’t take him long to get into playing shape. Junior Seau was older than Brooks when the Pats signed him, and he was still effective. Brooks would be a worthy addition to the team.

He would be added for depth thats it.......

Its unlikely that he would come in and start in front of Roach or Williams or even Pisa when he gets back. But I do like the prospects of the knowledge he would bring in. He could teach a couple of these young bloods a thing or two about going about their business and just knowledge of the Tampa 2 system in general. Plus you know they will pick him up Angelo drafted him and Lovie was his D coordinator. Its a lock that we get him, but just dont expect him to start.

Is there any resource

that evaluates/provides info on quality of teams’ medical staffs? In baseball/basketball, some organizations are notorious for keeping players healthy (White Sox pitching staff, Phoenix Suns generally), and others aren’t quite so good (KC Royals).

Seems like we’re either unlucky, in that a significant amount of our core defenders become/are injury liabilities (Harris, Brown, Urlacher, Dvoracek, et al), or we may not have a very good staff? Anyone have any insight? Just a thought.

harris, brown, urlacher never had any major injuries nor were considered injury risks in college. i considered the gambles that the bears have taken on injury risks such as bowman (dvoracek?).. i’m sure that’s part of it, but i’d be surprised if that was the sole reason

Let's get off the ledge shall we?/

Urlacher was a great player but has he been anything more than decent lately (last year). We will definitely miss his playcalling on the defensive side of the ball but nothing that briggs can’t do. Will we miss him? yes, but someone very capable will step in and do the job. He hasn’t played at a great level in a long time. We get the offense back in sync and we will be fine.

Losing Urlacher is absolutely huge. Now opposing offenses will game plan the Bear defense in completely different fashion. And you can bet the ranch they will go right for the jugular by executing passing routes up the middle which will further exploit a bad defensive secondary.

I have faith that we can still run our scheme (gap control) and play aggressive with bringing Payne, Afalava and Manning up tight to the line of scrimmage. To offset the loss of both Brian and Pizza. (Manning is an athletic beast, when healthy and is just let loose)

So… we’d be playing 4 linemen, 3 linebackers, and 3 safeties in the box, with a single cornerback covering everyone else? That’s some innovative defensive thinking, there.

HH weighs 238lbs stretched over a 6’4 frame. As soon as Urlacher left the game, the Packers suddenly had the ability to run the ball as HH was either caught out of position or flat on his back after being blocked out of it.
