From Steelers Fan: no questions or comments about sunday matchup?
check out BTSC if you will to find out what our concerns about this upcoming game. the general consensus is that it should be a close game, that cutler will have fixed his mistakes, and that ben will be forced to throw the ball once again. what are your takes and your perspectives
I'm always checking the 'enemie's' blogs and surprisingly it seems a little quiet here. No comments on the weakness/strengths of sundays matchups, breakdown of players, matchups in positions etc...

I think it's because we're still getting over last weeks loss...
Normally the matchups and game breakdowns would have been posted by now but we’re still trying to figure out what the team is doing to fix the problems on our end like who the starting cornerbacks and linebackers are going to be, how Cutler and the receivers are going to fix their communication problems so they’re all on the same page, etc.
With that being said, what’s the deal with the Steelers offensive line? I haven’t been following them too closely in the offseason but they were getting beat consistently on both passing and running plays in the season opener with the Titans. I know the Titans have one of the better defenses in the league and a damn good front seven but it looked like Roethlisberger was running for his life for most of the game and Parker/Mendenhall couldn’t really get anything going on the ground. Are there a bunch of new starters on the line and they still need to gel? Or have they been together and this was just a bad game?
Even without Urlacher and Polamalu it should be a great defensive matchup and I (and pretty much every other Bears fan) expect Cutler to bounce back and cut down on the mental mistakes big time and show the world (again) that he can be a big time QB. Definitely looking forward to the game this Sunday!

oh
I think it’s because we’re still getting over last weeks loss…
I still haven’t left my house or seen day light and actually I am laying in a poll of vomit and urine.
but really if they make it out of this game without any injuries to the secondary I’ll be surprised.
The Steeler WRs will hit you hard.
I mentioned in another thread that I am glum...
our O-line has not gelled. running the ball successfully against the steelers seems unlikely. our recieving corps is the worst in the league. there were hopes for our two TE set but our #2 TE is out.
glad you asked, i'll do my best to answer any questions.
On that note, I dont want to sound like a representative of the steelers fans. I am a die hard fan but I am sure there are better analysts out there. with that caveat out…here goes.
I am, surprisingly, very much pleased with the steelers offensive line. the average fan will shout its awful like last year and many who know about the team will say they’re concerned.
I’m pleased because of what the coaching staff has said and what i’ve seen. the titans are an elite defense almost…ALMOST as good as the steelers. however…they managed only 13 hurries/sacks on 44 pass plays. To me that says something.
Steelers managed nearly 19 on 33 pass plays against a pro-bowl/hof line.
BB(thats big ben) was sacked 4 times. I blame two on him/play and 2 on the line.
one sack was by a DE completely, thats COMPLETELY unblocked. why? because ben it would seem was expecting a screen pass and didnt bother to look to the right.
another sack was because ben had nearly SIX SECONDS to pass or throw away the ball and held on too long. seriously…six seconds is like infinity.
the other two sacks-one was a total whiff on the play by a guard. he over extended and the lineman came through easily
The other sack was because the tight end and the tackle were at a loss for whom to block. the TE went out on an option after the block and the tackle DID NOT BLOCK ANYONE. that kind of mistake i am willing to chalk up to early game incompetence..
That being said the running game was atrocious. I was not impressed. Even less impressive were our RBs. I have always felt that our Rbs have no vision. There were several broken plays where parker could have ran to the outside. would it have worked? who knows…chris johnson made it work against us…
postgameheroes.com
to give credit where credit is due my info on the sacks came from postgameheroes.com
they do extremely quality professional level analysis all for free by showing pictures and videos of line play issues and other issues….
Not to burst your bubble
but all those reasons for giving up sacks are typical in the NFL. Missed assignments, misdiagosis of a play-call, missed block, etc. etc.
"A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject." -Sir Winston Churchill
well yes and no.
and that should tell you a lot when i say im happy with our pass protection.
last year in the beginning it was so atrocious that the mistakes i mentioned above would have been the least of our worries.
now…im happy that our line is indeed average.
when it comes to blitzing…and stunts and fancy shmancy stuff our line is pathetic. hence teams like the eagles and ravens give us fits.
yes we won against the ravens-3 times, but thats more because of ben’s extension of plays/elite defense/ very good receivers than it is about our oline.
Yep
There’s a reason why the so-called experts were saying the Steelers had the worst O-line for a SB champion ever.
Well, hopefully our fast D-line will give them fits Sunday, and can tackle Big Ben. :)
"A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject." -Sir Winston Churchill
Questions for you guys...
How good is hester in route running? how good is he at catching the ball? we all know he’s fast…
also, do you see any matchup issues in our secondary? I hear forte is a good pass catching RB(most catches in the nfl last year) and generally a very talented running back. how good has he been against ELITE defenses? Thats my question. if he’s like brandon jacobs…this could be a close game.
Also, we most likely will NOT have timmons in. he’s our best bet against stopping the TE/RB in passing downs. With both timmons and TP out it should be a fairly tough sledding for our defense.
The way I see it..if we can routinley stop the deep pass or depend on our corners to play effectively then we should stuff the dump offs. but that depends on how good our CBs/SS play
i'm no expert but
Hester route running: terrible. hands OK
like I said our receivers are horrid. they would not cause anyone problems. at least hester and knox have to be minded since they are fast. our best bet is for us to get lucky on a couple of deep pass plays.
forte is a good back, but he’s not elusive. not a major speed burner. more shifty. good footwork. without a little hole to work with he’s going nowhere. good blocker. good pass catcher. not somebody to make you quake in your shoes.
dont b so negative….steelers aren’t godly. certainly we have our issues. i do believe we’ll win this game but i also wont be surprised if its 1. a loss or 2. a very close game.
Forte does not equal Jacobs
but forte is definitely a fit for our Power O scheme. he’s a perfect compliment, he’s got good speed, hits holes decently, can shed a tackle and make a move when he needs to. he’s a get in and go to work guy, not a dancer, but not all power.
Hester is all world fast, and improving, Knox is our wildcard, he’s a burner, and nobody knows him, his hands are above average, but any of us have only seen him run straight, much like Hester. (unless he’s going east/west on punt returns)
Earl Bennett is sure handed, but also is young… none of them are established and we are working out kinks… but Cutler will get them the ball (see: 6 plays over 20 yards last wk)
obviously Olsen is a standout TE.

the Champs would/should rightly make any team nervous. you have a great HC, and your DC is a genius… and you play defense like we used to, it should come down to whoever wants it more.

I said it before and I'll say it again
The Steelers play the kind of defense that I’ve always wanted to see from the Bears. Granted, different schemes, but these guys play like a fire is lit under ‘em. I’ve got a lot of Steeler fan buddies so I’ve watched them quite a bit over the last few seasons, and I’m always envious.
by Loathie Smith on Sep 17, 2009 6:56 PM CDT up reply actions
I watched most of your Thurs night game and your team is strong. We’ve got some kinks to work out but our D-line looked good and I’m sure we’ll be sending some blitzes. I’d like to see a little revamped play calling to get back to the power-O B.N. just mentioned. We just saw the 3-4 and hopefully Jay and company have learned to exploit weakness. I want and hope we win but I have healthy respect for the defending champs.
being champs is overrated
i dont put much stock in it. we won…but so could a lot of others.
i like our defense. i dont like our running game. i especially am scared of the oline. i think this game is a litmus test of how things go.
Also….jay cutler played us 2 years ago and is more familiar with the steelers than greenbay.
he’s a good qb. a cry baby, but a good qb. i dont think the steelers are going to Tee off on the bears(though it would be nice ;)
I like Mendenhall
and was sad to see him go down last year, I honestly wanted the Bears to draft him, before Forte…i think he’s a bruiser, and he’s Fighting Illini… but obviously he’s a steeler, but i wish him well (just not this week)
I think both teams are going to routinely exploit the others weaknesses, you have a glaring one in Safety and our MLB and our secondary is suspect too

see thats the thing…i didnt know squat about mendenhall prior to the draft.
so when we did draft him only negative things have been said about how he’s played in what little he’s played
that he’s a soft runner, that he doesnt finish the run well. that hes not much of a north/south runner now and goes side to side.
i also havn’t seen him run down people like steven jackson. I’m not sure if thats what i expected or if my expectations are high for players in general because most of our 1st rounders have been good. but to me mendenhall seems like he’s more of another willie parker albiet slower….i dont see him running down LBs and certainly most any lineman can take him down.
i dunno, its a little early to tell but i’d take forte anyday right now…bettis, forte, jacobs-those are big guys IMO.
btw….mendenhall is 250 lbs and 5’10.
yeh, most of your first rounders are good...
Wish we knew what that was like.

You came through in the big game
last week was another example of that, except the late fumble. Cutler’s new to us but hasn’t been a winner, yet. I also think it’s gonna be a close one, we both have big injuries.
i think safety injuries are never that important. polamalu is a playmaker. that doesnt mean he’s absolutely necesary for a team to win. whereas a key LB or key lineman is necessary.
i.e…. our Dline is absolutely key for winning games. if we lose hampton or aaron smith ill poop my pants, and never watch another game until either one comes back. if we loose harrison or woodley i’ll cry slowly as the game progresses and watch my D get shredded.
the same goes for ike taylor who in my mind is as elite as nmade(raiders) or champ bailey. The problem is that he cant catch. if he goes down then we really are screwed.
taylor is also as fast as hester so im not too worried although the other wr is pretty fast.
but if a safety goes down….even if its tp, it just means a playmaker is gone.
i’d rather lose TP than casey hampton/aaron smith/iketaylor/harrison for an extended time…even the entire regular season.
now when it comes to play offs….we def. need him and all the other guys. absolute must.
you say that
but then you’ve not been privy to our Safety situation in Chicago. it is Hugely important for us.

Shouldn't be this much of a problem
but the Bears only have one “true” FS on their roster, and unfortunately, he doesn’t have the awareness in his repertoire to play there.

I will attempt to give you a little insight on the funeral parlor atmosphere around here. Let’s see, where to begin. We lost to our biggest division rival for starters, which puts us down a game for the division crown right out of the gate. The contest itself showed us that all the weaknesses we were screaming to have adressed in the off season(which were not) are indeed still there. The debut of our new “franchise” qb was pretty horrendous. We lost our defensive Captain for the season plus three other players to injury. We’ve been dealing with the Cutler hater crowd and the “I told you so” rhetoric quite a bit since the loss. We are hosting the defending Champs this week. Oh, and the Chicago park district(which owns Soldier Field)decided to have a U2 concert at the stadium last weekend which destroyed the playing surface, which means we will be playing the upcoming game on 5 day old sod. Hopefully neither team suffers undue injury from that. Not looking for pity or anything like that just trying to answer your question as to why its a little quieter than usual around here. I’d also like to say thanks for coming by and getting the ball rolling on looking at the matchup this week, I think this is just the therapy alot of us need to get last week behind us.

Another Steelers fan here
We are, at least I think, in a similar boat with you all in that “the weaknesses we were screaming to have addressed in the off season” were not taken care of (well a couple big ones at least).
Many people wanted to see us draft some good O line men, but our starting line is pretty much the same thing. Another big issue was short yardage and goal line runs. What did we do to improve that? No linemen, a rookie FB who didn’t play FB in college, and we cut the one guy who looked like a stud in short yardage plays.
Don’t be surprised if on 3rd and short you see the Steelers line up shotgun on Sunday. We failed on two 3rd and 1s against the titans. It is bad. Anyway, yeah we are the defending champs, but we do have our problems. I do not expect Sunday to be a blow out. I’d feel a lot better if Polamalu and Timmons (questionable) were playing.

With that said.....
I think its imperative we establish the running game against you. One, because its who we are as an offensive unit, and two, because doing so will allow us to execute a manageable, minimal risk passing attack. In short, we need BALANCE. On defense, if we don’t get pressure on your qb consistently, we could be in for a long afternoon. Our secondary is suspect, to put it mildly, so without that pressure I’m afraid it could get ugly. In the passing game, Devin Hester looked good last week -90 yards on 4 catches with a td. Some believe, and I am in agreement, that this is going to be his breakout year at wr. At qb, i hae to believe with Cutler under center, we should never really be out of ball games. The man does have some serious skills. I dont really know much about your team other than the fact they do one thing really well, and thats hoist the Vince Lombardi trophy over their heads. Congrats on that by the way. Personally, I am looking for a hard fought dfensive fight here, low score, game won in the waning minutes of the 4th quarter if not overtime. Good luck and may the best team win!

+1
if da team can’t establish any sort of running game again i can’t see any logical way the bears win this one. i would expect the passing game to be a little smoother than last week but if the bears are getting smoked at the point of attack again it’s going to be a crappy sunday.

shouldn’t be a problem. The problem is containing Big Ben and getting him to the ground before he makes a great play(s).

Bears keys to victory
Steeler fan here. I like this match up in your favor. Reason being:
1. Nothing hurts Pittsburgh more than RBs that can catch out of the back field. If there is one weakness to the Steeler’s Zone Blitz schemes in my opinion it is the flats. If Forte is active in the passing game we wil be in some trouble. (you can chalk up the run, nobody runs on us).
2. Jay Cutler ripped our secondary in our one previous matchup. Something that Coach Tomlin knows very well when asked about Jay. QBs with accurate quick releases can shred the Zone Blitz…see Tom Brady!
3. Adewale Ogunleye….This guy scares the shit our of me. I am predicting 2 sacks minimum and one forced turnover.
Final Prediction
Bears 17 Steelers 16 in an emotional and physical slug fest
Hope I’m wrong
Let's keep the physicality to a minimum..
We’ve lost enough players as it is. HAHA! Only kidding. Can’t wait to watch this one!

I’m still dumfounded that he was targeted more than once the entire game. It’s preposturous since the Packers we’re basically leaving the flats wide-open.

This was probably because Forte had to stay back to pick up blitzes many of the plays, as well as your FB. I actually just read a very interesting article on how Capers set up our blitzes, and one of his goals was to try to force Forte to say back and block. Here is the link if your interested. It’s pretty much just about our defense, and how our blitzes worked. Don’t know if you wanna read it or not but I thought I’d leave it in case.

not so much for bringing up recently suppressed bad memories, but worth reading for a good explanation of how the pack front seven wore out the bears offense for most of the game. hopefully da team can counterscheme to not have to keep forte in to block all the time as i am sure other opponents will try the same stuff on the bears now (it is a copycat league of course).

Thanks! I thought it was pretty interesting from just a strategic standpoint. I’m sure they’ll find a way to, and they need to find a way too. Forte is great catching balls out of the backfield and it could help Cutler out a ton.

disagree. i see a blowout. steelers 26-10 with caveat
but thats based on several factors- we constantly pressure cutler and he’s never able to get the deep pass.
we limit the yardage the runningbacks get as receivers less than 50 yrds
2 interceptions
ben shreds the defense and the Oline does a good job in pass pro-actually it does a very good job.
if those things dont happen then we’re screwed. lol.
caveat-all of the above happen or we lose a close game
in the short amount of time Cutler has been a Bear
The most success he has had is with deep sideline routes. He’s pulled off quite a few in about 2 games worth of action. He’s been hurt in the middle of the field where the receivers have to make zone reads and they just aren’t on the same page yet.
I expect Olsen and Forte to be the primary target on a lot more of his shorter passes as he works to get rid of the ball before the blitz can get to him. I also think the crappy sod will limit the effectiveness of both teams pass rushes. Don’t think either team will run it well.
I’ll go against the common wisdom and predict its a much higher scoring game than Vegas thinks. 27-24. I’ll pick the Steelers because I’m usually wrong.

All of that could happen
and I wouldn’t be shocked. But the Bears are a really good “no one believes in us” team… and with everyone seemingly picking the Steerlers to whallop us… who can tell?
and i wish this game were being played in oct/nov… bears/steelers feels like it should be a cold weather slugfest. :-P not that the warm weather will make it less of a slugfest. should be a fun game.

glad to hear it, well you know what, the steelers are a good team and as a result i feel like they’ll persevere.
ben knows what to do and when, and knows how to handle it. the guy will tear the secondary down and the corners wont be ready for it. thats why i see a blow out.
i hope we go deep…not dink and dunk our way out. i hope our OLine protects well and we limit the sacks.
i also hope everyones on the same page on offense so we dont get needless penalties/sacks/turnovers.

3. Olsen cannot block and hears footsteps. Bennett and Knox also lack toughness.

Can I just say
that this forum is the best football chatter I’ve seen so far. I love that this has trash talk but it doesn’t go down the same path of other forums where it gets either really racial or people just start talking about something completely different. Kudos fellas and GO BEARS!!!
really? it gets RACIAL?
wow….thats not nice. i’m not white….glad i trashed talked here then, lol.
anyway….this should be a good game. i’ve been pumped all day. all i keep thinking about is this game…i can’t even study. not that i have any tests but still.
gooo steelers.
We like to talk football that's what we do.
Now if some troll comes over here talking a bunch of nonsense it can get ugly and quick. But usually when a fan comes over and talks football it usually stays civil.
