Schefter Reporting On Twitter-Bears Express interest in Matt Jones

I just got a tweet from Adam Schefter of ESPN, and he claims the Titans have set up a meet and greet with Matt Jones.  And in addition the Cowboys and Bears have expressed interest.

Star-divide

Adam_SchefterInteresting: Titans bringing former Jags WR Matt Jones to Tennessee tomorrow for a visit. Cowboys and Bears also expressing some interest. from web

Now I know this topic has been talked about at nauseum, but I felt this was post-worthy, with some actual substance to all of the speculation.  I thought some of Cutlers comments during the in-game interview and the press conference yesterday were telling of managments thought process with our current group of wide recievers.  If there was no interest, Cutler would have came out and said that they were fine with what they had.  But yesterday he said that if they did bring in somebody it would be a veteran of sorts that could mesh easily with the team.  Not exactly knocking down the rumor mill.

Thoughts

Oh yea and BEAR DOWN

Sorry I dont know how to make links and shorten the name. I have an archaic computer mind.

Nothing about Bears interest in Jones though, interesting. Schefter normally is on top of things though.

Schefter was better when he was still with NFLN....

since he has sold out, some would say there has been a “schism” between him and his scooping abilities.

Sorry AT...

Jones will get offers from the Titans, Cowboys, and 49ers first. They actually need the depth more than the Bears. I can’t say i would be sad to see him in a Bears uni, but I wouldn’t trust him as far as Rideau or Davis to this point in his career. He half-asses it to much and i do not see his competitive desire getting more intense after kicking the ’cane.

There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots.

by LostInSTL on Sep 2, 2009 6:37 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't agree.

I think that after what he went through it’s worth a shot to trust him for a one or two year deal. He has a reputation from word of mouth of half-assing it a bit but I think he has something to prove now and could be a different person. Let’s not forget he would have easily eclipsed 1,000 yards last season had he not had to sit out four games with Garrard as his QB. Cutler likes big targets, him and Olsen on the field at once would be hell for opposing defenses, and he could turn out to be a legitimate #1 for us. Not to mention he would be cheap to pick up and we don’t have a better WR on our roster right now anyway. Where’s the downside?

Jones

It doesn’t make sense to ignore his ability, and the fact he produced well last year. He gives Cutler another reliable, big target to go over the middle and provide a great red-zone option. I tell you what, I’d rather throw to him than some unknown who hasn’t been able to make a team in many, many years. There’s absolutely no harm in signing him for a year with virtually no risk at all. What’s he going to do? Bring in an industrial-sized bag of blow to disperse amongst his teammates, causing them to convulse and die?

First time I saw the Jags...........

Was my first Bears game ever, I bought a ticket and went BY MYSELF because it was the last regular season game in the old Soldier Field, it ended up being the last win in the old Soldier Field as they went on to clinch the division that game! And that was also the game where Keith Traylor had an interception and returned like 75 yards and nearly scored and nearly had a heart attack! Very Funny Stuff!

Heavens to mergatroid

The Great Matt Jones remains unemployed with training camps about to wrap up. Gee, I wonder why ?!?!? Maybe it is because he isn’t any friggin good AND has a penchant for nose candy. 32 NFL teams have said a big no thanks to this point for a REASON !

YOU ARE RIGHT DUDE – A guy that couldn’t get a contract and was a long time free agent never turned out to be good. I mean 7th rounders always suck and 1st rounders are always great. Free agents that get $100M contracts right away are alway great and free agents that get $1M contracts near the end of camp always suck.

Don’t know if you watch football or you think all this “Bear” talk is about hairy leather loving old gay men, but Matt Jones is good. I hate this “no other team signed him” crap. Who cares what they think/do? I care what the Bears think/do. Sometimes you need to take a chance to get a reward.

Brandon Lloyd got a contract from Denver. So that must mean he is better than Matt Jones cause another team signed him????

by brands735 on Sep 3, 2009 5:28 AM CDT up reply actions

well obviously!

For some (unknown) reason, we have this hate train bashing Matt Jones, he’s under-talented, he’s a drug user… and these are the same people who wanted Burress… even though he was (at the time time) facing possible jail time….
because he was proven, some people would rather have a convicted felon who’s good, but dont want anything to do with one, who’s progress has steadily inclined since he’s come into the league, and would most assuredly broke 1,000 yards last year, if not for suspension…for drinking a beer, not drugs mind you, he’s also not going to prison for 2 years, has a lot of upside, and has done a lot to correct himself from his past troubles.
in 2 years, burress won’t be in the NFL anymore, but Matt Jones could be.

The way I understand it

This guy was caught in a vehicle with two other individuals in which six grams of cocaine were found. He was not found in possesion of the substance, nor has he been involved in any other violations concerning the drug. He did, however, violate the conditions of his probation by testing positive for alcohol, thus incurring a 3 game suspension by the NFL.

Simply stating he has " a penchant for nose candy" doesn’t cut it with me,unless of course,a person had intimate knowledge of the situation. Jones may or may not be worth the effort, I don’t know.
