Are the WRs making Cutler look good? And other tangential Bears insight

It is now three games into the season, and I've got a lot on my mind. Wide receivers, draft picks, glaring needs, Jerry Angelo, etc.  If you want to read some tangent-filled Bears insight, or you've just read every Bears article known to man and you just want to read one more, then follow me inside....

Star-divide

Following the offseason acquisition of stud quarterback Jay Cutler, cynical fans and media-type alike blasted the Bears for not acquiring an established wide receiver. As the typical argument went, "Sure Cutler has a cannon, but who is he going to throw to? He’s going to miss Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal."

Yet all along, the Bears organization has stood pat. GM Jerry Angelo has repeatedly been quoted as saying the "quarterback makes the receiver".

As this article suggests, it’s the wide receivers making Cutler look good.

Of course, that’s an exaggeration—Cutler has a pocket presence and poise that has enabled him to make touchdowns out of what would have been sacks of former QB Kyle Orton—but it gets the point across.  In fact, David Haugh argues that "the Bears' most valuable position group has been the receivers. The second-most valuable has been the opponents' kickers." It’s hard to argue with him.

Even before the blockbuster Cutler trade, fans were begging the Bears to draft a wide receiver in the first round. Of those first round picks, only Percy Harvin and Kenny Britt have more receiving yards than our fifth round pick Johnny Knox. Those stats don’t tell the true story as only Knox and Harvin have had any significant rookie impact.

Second year receiver Earl Bennett is quietly emerging as Cutler’s go to guy.  While he had failed to find the end zone thus far (disregarding the 2-point conversion reception), Bennett has connected with Cutler virtually everywhere else. Only Mario Manningham and DeSean Jackson have more yards for a second-year receiver.

Olsen, Bennett, Williams, Forte, Knox… When did Jerry Angelo become such an offensive talent evaluator?

Barring a significant drop in production, the Bears have seemingly answered the receiver question. Good. So, what’s our most pressing need now?

If you ask me, it is the same position I would have addressed in last years draft—and I’m not talking about Wide Receiver.

The Offensive Line!

It’s true that the line has more depth (and maybe talent) than it has had in years.  The problem is that that isn’t saying much. Right-tackle Chris Williams looks solid and should eventually replace aging Orlando Pace on the left side (perhaps as early as next year). But a look down the rest of the line and you can’t help but see an aging group. I don’t think it is out of the question to pick up an offensive lineman with each of our first two picks next year. Can you imagine this offense with a bruising, dominant line?

Sure, we still need to address the secondary, but the fact that Al Afalava has emerged as a stud muffin and a half (and he can tackle… hear that Peanut?) eases this inquiring mind a bit.

The defensive line could always use more talent. But then again, Jarron Gilbert could emerge as our future star. Could is the key word. Of course, seeing how D-line coach Rod Marinelli has transformed the "rush men" makes me optimistic.

Trying to get back on track here, there is one thing that we should all take away from this season thus far: the Bears are resilient. We didn’t have that last year. We blew fourth-quarter leads, we couldn’t come from behind to save our life. Not this year.

Even the abomination that was our first game against the Packers illustrates this. We came from behind to give us a fourth quarter lead… that we blew. But we got the ball back… and we blew that too. But it was waaaaaay closer than it should have been. And we’ve improved since then, which seems to be the ongoing trend. Can we continue to improve our way to a division title?

Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal are missing Cutler ....

…….. not the other way around. Are the WRs making Cutler look good? Give me a frakkin break. The only receiver who has been consistently good is Devin Hester. He made some unbelievable catches against Seattle. He made uncatchable catches, two moments of genius in particular. Olsen has been a disaster, cannot get separation, has butter-covered hands and cannot block. Kellen Davis should be #1 TE – he can do both and is 6’7. No-brainer. Bennett looks to lack toughness and drops too many, a la Olsen. All receivers have exhibited poor route running except for Hester who looks to be the real deal. Cutler has done great things in all three games, made throws that few can make, and without him we are the Tennessee Titans, 0-3.

Al Afalava ? Stud Muffin ? Dire game against the Seahawks re positioning and missed tackles.

Let's be fair

I think Cutler has done a great job in the way he gets the ball out when most QB’s would be sacked and he does a great job in the 4th quarther, but his accuracy hasn’t exactly been great even when he’s had time. The receivers have made some great catches in all three games on what should have been very normal plays.

Also, your statement about Marshall & Royal missing Cutler isn’t exactly true, they are 3-0 and Orton has performed very well, actually with a higher QB rating than Jay right now. Like I’ve said before, it’s time we get out of this whole Cutler vs. Orton debate it doesn’t mean anything unless we meet them in the Super Bowl, but to make statements like they miss Cutler when they have a perfect record is ridiculous at this point.

Quick points...

I agree, Olsen has been disappointing. He actually had a decent game yesterday. He missed one pretty big block by my count. I agree that Kellen Davis is probably our best pass catching TE, but I’m not sure he can block.

Al Afalava has been great, point blank. While i haven’t broken down game film and I certainly don’t claim to be an expert, I didn’t see any missed tackles on his part. It looks like he’s the only DB that actually KNOWS how to tackle.

When Afalava

tackles, it looks like text book perfect form. Just the way the coaches teach it in the peewees. Facemask between the numbers and wraps up. Nice to see on the Bears. We don’t do that well for the most part.

Maybe its because I don't see it that often

but I agree. When Afalava tackles, its like a thing of beauty. They make Afalava jerseys yet?

Great post,

Doesn’t look like they have an official one at the NFL shop yet, but you can always go customizable to get it.

Great post!

I love the randomness and above all, the positivity!

Last year, a “rushing team” that struggled running the ball and thus passed a lot won the Super Bowl. If our D can step up, I think we might be in for a ride!

David Haugh can bite my shlong.

I can’t believe he wrote that garbage. Our QB is rifling TD passes in tight spots, and he’s saying the WRs are making him look good. LOL. The WRs have to get the ball in their hands to look good in the first place.

Not sure I completely agree...

“Of those first round picks, only Percy Harvin and Kenny Britt have more receiving yards than our fifth round pick Johnny Knox.”

While I am certainly not trying to discount Knox, I think he’s been considerably better than most of us thought and is exciting everytime he touches the ball, in fairness the reason that other rookies fall slightly behind in catches and yards is because most of those teams have legitimate #1 and #2 recievers on their team.

I think Cutler is doing a fantastic job working with the group he has, and they have great potential. But lets not claim that we’re running Larry Fitz and Boldin out there quite yet.

We are not normal. We are legends.

More of the tired old nonsense...

… about not having a #1. Sigh

by SC Dave on Sep 28, 2009 8:25 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

First off,

you have to agree that, “"Of those first round picks, only Percy Harvin and Kenny Britt have more receiving yards than our fifth round pick Johnny Knox” That’s a statement of fact. But let’s compare apples to apples:

Darrius Heyward-Bey is on Oakland, a team that hardly has any world-beating wide receivers and he hasn’t had the impact Knox has had. Kenny Britt is probably in as similar as a situation as the Bears. The Giants have Steve Smith, who is solid—not elite— an Mario Manningham who is a second year pro having the same kind of impact in his second year as our own second year player Earl Bennett.

Percy Harvin is having an impact similar to that of Knox, and the Vikings have a “#1 receiver” in Berrian— or at least a legitimate #2.

My point is, that “most of those teams have legitimate #1 and #2 receivers on their team” argument is not only tired, I don’t think its valid.

Ok here's my point.

Numbers are irrelevant when you can get solid production out of all receivers. The way we are spreading the ball around, we don’t need anyone to emerge as a number 1 or 2 or whatever. The guys are showing that they can make the grabs they must make to win games and they are. It’s an advantage when an opposing team has no idea who to double cover because anyone can be the go to guy on any given sunday. Not to mention all guys have shown to have very good hands in my opinion. I’m liking what we have very much.

Very good point :)

I agree with you 100%. I strictly used numbers and stats to prove a different points, that’s all.

I wasn't trying to disprove anything you were saying

with my comment. I just kept replying down. Also to reply to my own statement, I’d still like them to go after Boldin during the offseason :)

by PolishSausage.Ditka.Bears. on Sep 28, 2009 10:28 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sorry...

I wasn’t making the point that we aren’t ok. I was just noting that it isn’t quite an apples to apples comparison all the time. Numbers tend to be heavily influenced by the team you play on that’s all. I truly think we will be fine with what we have. I love Knox and his big play ability will be a huge asset with Cutler’s arm. I thought Hester looked great and is really taking to the reciever position.

We are not normal. We are legends.

I'd argue that hester is the go-to guy

At least, in the clutch.

As far as Peanut, he goes for that TO almost all the time. The Bears are taught to gang-tackle, and during that one play where Julius Jones broke free, HH didn’t wrap Jones up.

by jake1823 on Sep 28, 2009 9:53 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

You're right about Hillenmeyer not wrapping up, but if you look at the endzone angle

he would have pushed Jones out of bounds except Tillman bloced it when he was trying to strip the ball. Tillman has to be aware of the situation, it was 3rd and 19 they would have probably had to punt the ball to the Bears from that spot on the field so we would have gotten the ball back anyway.

by BearFan611 on Sep 28, 2009 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Bears play for the turnover

They practice that play all the time. Sorry, I just don’t agree.

by jake1823 on Sep 28, 2009 11:30 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Watch the tape again...

Tillman was doing EXACTLY what he should have been doing containing the ballcarrier and trying to force a turnover…

When out of nowhere HH comes in and lays the wood on…Tillman(whoops!) thus freeing up Jones for the long run…

I watched the replay on my DVR, because I couldn’t believe what I had seen.

Unreasonable people make life difficult...

You're right

I just saw the replay again. I assumed HH was the first one there, but he wasn’t. Peanut was wrong there.

I say look for C. Williams to take the LT position

sometime this season. Whether it be injury to Pace or he can’t keep up for 13 more games.

Ouch.

That means CW at LT, and Shaffer at RT? I hope you are wrong…

I could see it happening

but maybe they move Pace to RT if he’s not injured, maybe it could take some of the pressure off his old body since he’s not having to protect Cutty’s blind side. I am definitely NOT wanting Pace or anyone to be injured for him to move over to LT. More importantly though, let’s swap Omiyale and Beekman next week during the Lions game and see if we can get our run game going.

by PolishSausage.Ditka.Bears. on Sep 28, 2009 10:36 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If I remember it correctly though,

Pace signed because he didn’t want to play RT, and we told him he could stay on the left side. Right now, we have so much newness on the OL (Pace, Omiyale, Williams, I don’t see us really changing too much.

We need time to jell… I just hope it doesn’t take too many more games for that to occur.

New to our offense: Pace, Omiyale, Williams, Cutler, Bennett, Knox… that’s over half of our starters having never played together.

I remember that as well.

I’m saying move him to RT only if he can’t produce at a high enough level. I would hope that he wouldn’t be so selfish as to put his preferences before the success of the team if that happens. I’m not saying after 3 games that I want this to happen right now BTW, nor am I saying I want it to happen period. Who knows if Williams can handle the LT position at this point for that matter. I agree we do need time to gel but like you I am growing impatient because we cannot always rely on Cutler to get the job done. We need our run game back. I still wouldn’t mind seeing Beekman play ahead of Omiyale on some snaps and evaluating the difference if any. I’ve never agreed with the idea that we have the “easiest schedule” in the NFL and we have some big challenges ahead of us. We have to get the line working or we’re not going to always come out as fortunate as yesterday. Not to mention we need to play some f**king D on 3rd down!! Get healthy Pisa, we need you buddy.

I think you remember correctly...

and we have lots of newness on the OL. They’ve got another week of real game time experience to get it together. Here’s to hoping they do, and that they continue to improve each and every week.

No

And really this shouldn’t even be questioned. Just look at the stats of your wr’s through 3 games this year, compared to through 3 games last year.

Look at what Marshall and Royal have done without him…pretty much nothing.

You hear it all the time, and it’s true. Great qb’s make wr’s better.

From what I have seen so far.

The Receivers look a lot better than they did last year, and a lot of that is probably having a better Quarterback than Orton throwing to them. Cutler seems like a good leader, and having him here made the offense better.

Also..

Hester and Davis were the only recievers that saw any playing time last year.

You're being very Un-Dude right now.
