Kevin Jones out for Season

Been looking around for some kind of information on this everywhere since that late hit against the Browns;  was hoping it wouldn't be that bad.  But it looks like we lost Kevin Jones for the season... I wonder what this means as far as roster spots since he'll end up on IR.

Maybe it frees up a spot for another unlikely wide receiver, or possible gives us the ability to keep 4 TEs?

Doubtful

I have a feeling we’ll pick up another RB and either go w/ 4 or drop one of the guys we have already and go w/ 3 because I doubt the coaching staff feels good about Wolfe and Peterson spelling Forte all year. Sucks for Jones. He is going to be gone after this, they guy cannot stay healthy.

This pisses me off soo much.

This guy has been a disappointment since he came to the Bears.

When a coin flips and hits tails when I have clearly guessed heads, it pisses me off too.

We took a chance on an injured back. It cost us next to nothing. If he would have stayed healthy it would have brought us numerous dividends. He has been here for one year, in which we never handed him the ball. It should piss you off… …that you have no patience. (The next sentences will be sarcasm) Yes, it pisses me off too when we sign a huge potential running back for next to nothing and he gives us a year of not getting the ball before we resign him for next to nothing again and use him way too much in a game that means nothing before he follows the way of everyone else we signed for the same amount and doesn’t make the team. (Sarcasm done) The Bears have a huge potential gain if Jamal Lewis gets cut by the Browns. Kevin Jones was the same back as Matt Forte without the pass catching ability. The thing is, I don’t mean that in a bad way at all. But Jamal Lewis is a way better running short yardage back. If the Bears want a short yardage back to check down to in the passing game then fine, but if I want someone hitting that hole full speed then monitor tomorrow carefully.

So where in the world does it show when we lose our backup running back...........

For the year and that pisses me off, show I have no patience. Because we could have really used him to help supplant Forte. Sorry when a guy goes down its disappointing but that is just the way it is. I didnt know you had this big backup plan to already go and get Jamal Lewis, have you already informed the Bears of your move, make sure you let them know so they can open up a roster spot for him, cause with a week left in till the regular season how much can a guy we pull off the scrap heap actually help.

And my bet is they stick with AP being our #2 and move forward, cause he knows the system. Thats why you go to OTAs, thats why you go to camp, thats why there is a preseason, so you can work out all the kinks. Even if they do bring in someone, which I hope they do, it will take him weeks before he can be truly acclimated to our offense to where he can make a BIG difference,. Like Jones was supposed to do for us this season. I didnt know when a player goes down for my team I shouldnt be pissed off or disappointed sorry man, next time Ill just get excited for that big free agent pick up that will take his place.

Get all pumped for that stopgap move they could make, but this sets us back regardless of whos out there or what you think of the guys that are out there.

"This guy has been a disappointment since he came to the Bears."

I was referring to this statement you made. It makes me curious that you are now adamently defending a back that has “been a disappointment since he came to the Bears.” The point is that I like Kevin Jones, but him going down is in no way the end of the road, and it gives us room to pick up a back with a different skill set than Forte. Are you happy or sad that he got hurt?

by Higgins on Sep 5, 2009 1:37 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I AM DISAPPOINTED.....

Pissed, upset, how many more words may I use. Of course I am not happy, we needed him. A question for you now. Are you happy with how he has played with the Bears for the last 2 years now (cause you can add this year to his resume since we already know he wont play) or are you disappointed??

In no way was I "defending him"......

But to think I didnt have expectations for a guy who just got a 2 year deal for whatever reason (he certainly didnt earn it last year) would be incorrect.

I didnt say it was......

But I can be pissed off all I want, this does not help. I didnt say we shouldnt have signed him, I didnt say it was his fault that he got hurt. I just said he has been disappointing since hes put on a Bears uniform, the last 3 years for this guy have been injury riddled. And I am sure he is just as disappointed and pissed off as I am.

I'd say it was more his fault then not.

He jumped and landed the way he did to avoid a hit, probably in fear of getting injured. Maybe if he would have taken the hit he’d of been fine. Obviously there is no way of knowing what would have happened and it is what it is, but I do think some of the blame of his injury lies on his decision making.

Now what do we do.....................

Well the only way now to shorten Fortes work load, is to become a pass first team, there wont be anyone sufficient enough to lighten his workload. Wolfe and Peterson are special teamers that wont get it done. Just throw, throw, throw and resign Rideau!

We have just the QB
is to become a pass first team

Probably not going to become the ’08 Broncos or the Saints, but AP and/or Wolfe will suffice when taking 6-10 reps per game from Forte.

Wait till a short yardage back gets cut.

There are plenty of teams that have a goal line back that they will feel is expendable until the first three times they come up short next year. I hope Jamal Lewis gets cut like John Clayton thinks he will. The Bear could pick him up and make him a short yardage back that can more than occasionally spell Matt Forte. Perfect fit in my eyes.

Depends on why you think J Davis was cut...

They may keep Tofu simply because he looks like he has upside and could be more of a bowling ball type FB than McKie can be. Realistically, I doubt McKie has more than a year or two more left on the team no matter what due to his age. I don’t see us running FB dives with him past age 31, specially with the low cost of FB as far as drafting one goes, or keeping someone like Tofu.

but seeing as kj was looking pretty weak in preseason anyway this doesn’t seem to be a big loss. i don’t see why between wolfe and ap combined can get 8-10 carries a game. that would obviously keep forte off the field a bit more.

by Higgins on Sep 5, 2009 1:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well

You can point to Olsen’s fumbles vs. the Panthers for losing that game.
You can point to not sacking Griese one time in 63 attempts and Peanut’s stupid penalty as the reasons for that loss.
You can point to all the injuries to the secondary for the reason they lost the Falcons game.
You can point to the horrible pass-defense for the reason they lost the Texans game.

So, as you can see none of those games were a result of having a mediocre backup running back or a backup NT who can’t rush the passer worth a lick.

I like Deuce too

But lets be real, the guy is at a point of his career when he can no longer stay healthy. It would be the exact same boat as KJ.

If ever there was a time for AP to finally step up and prove he is worth that roster spot then it’s now. We all love AP and he plays with heart but we are gonna need him to produce if he is going to backup Forte.

by Chitownproduct on Sep 8, 2009 2:16 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If there ever was a time to keep 4 TE on the active roster...

This would be the time and team to do so. Clark is great, but at 32 years old I just don’t see him having that much left in his tank. He is realistically one moderate injury away or two years from calling it a career. Gaines is going to be a backup/blocking FB and at 29 years old isn’t a spring chicken himself.

Say what you will about Kellen Davis, he has shown flashes and is a decently sized target that with a bit more progression would be a good fit in the future two TE sets alongside Olsen.

Guy sucked last year due to injury, so signing him to a new contract and expecting increased performance to the extent that he would become a decent backup to Forte NEVER MADE ANY SENSE. i don’t hate him for getting inured, I hate management for relying on him and somehow expecting more from the same group of scrubs.

I had seen enough in his brief tenure to know that he would not be the RB he was. I was right. he may have been good once upon a time and yes he has had injuries, I am aware of these things. He sucked last year and he is missing this entire season so you can hold onto those things as tightly as you want, but I was right and the guy has been and will be a complete zero for the bears.

by brands735 on Sep 5, 2009 10:20 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's Like This

If we,(the Bears), pay guys like Dusty and Jones large sums of money and get nothing out of it…………….no, I don’t care. Both of them made enough money to buy a house and live off the rest for the rest of their lives. They both have millions of dollars unless they blew it all at the Gentlemen’s club. I blew out my knee twice. I had to recover and work from it. Nobody felt sorry for me. So if you need a tissue box for them I have no problem with that.

by Gesiakob on Sep 5, 2009 10:36 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If this is correct, KJ’s salary for 2009 was only in the $600K range, not millions. And yes, a lot of NFL players do spend money recklessly because it goes with the “lifestyle”. But $600K won’t last someone in their 20’s the rest of their life. KJ isn’t an elite name in the NFL racking in money and I don’t mind players being well compensated because it is worth it for the best 20ish weeks of the year (and by weeks I only mean Thursdays, Sundays, and Mondays…and Saturdays during playoff time, the other days suck). I find no pleasure in a “good guy” getting injured especially if he was on my team. On the other hand, Brett Favre and Michael Vick can get run over and I would not care but I don’t consider them “good guys”.

I think Dusty may have been in his rookie contract so who knows how much that was worth. I am sure people felt sorry for you when you blew out your knee…the difference is, you don’t provide entertainment for millions of fans (no offense but KJ has a lot more to lose I am assuming).

I think Deuce is the most solid free agent RB out there. I don’t think we need one though, we have to stop being such Debbie Downers (whomp whomp) and saying how “he sucks” or “he isn’t any good”. How about if it is a Bear we are talking about (active or injured) we give constructive critiques besides “he sucks”. It makes us look sort of stupid to visitors on this site when we are talking smack about our own players. If Fargas is cut.

IMO, he would be the best on the market… And would hope JA gets on the horn.

I am skeptical about any ex-Raider. Imagine the mental trauma they went through being on that team (exception: Randy Moss, but he never REALLY played on OAK). Doesn’t Fargas’ nickname have “bear” in it?

by brands735 on Sep 5, 2009 10:59 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Forgot about the nickname. lol

Fargas made the Raiders, so moot point.

However they did just trade a 2011 first round pick to New England for DE Seymour. Maybe we could trade for Fargas? I read someone suggest trading Vasher for Fargas. Dear God that would be sweet… I’m sure we could tempt “The Walking Dead” with something…

This is why today is when you START thinking about the 53

Because other cuts will determine who is available. Let the great sorting begin!

But as for RB: Peterson isn’t a guy you want spelling Forte to keep him fresh, and I’m not sold on Wolfe as anything but a change-of-pacer. But I’ll bet we’ll be able to find a guy with some starting RB chops on the scrap heap, because so many RBs that get kept get kept for special teams.

And the prevailing wind happens to be blowing from Vichy.

I already posted this on another fanpost but

Dominic Rhodes was cut by the Bills and I believe he would be a great pickup. He’s a bigger back then Jones and was a reliable backup to Addai. Thought I’d repost it and find out what you guys.

curious

to see who steelers cut they are keeping it a secret.

no way we stand with the current crop of RB's

“AP can spell getting about 6 carries a game and Wolfe can also take on some downs (especially passing downs)…”

Forte was gassed during the last quarter of the season, and he had the same roster of back – ups which helped him absolutely none. They must get a decent back – up to spell him, not someone like AP and Garrett Wolfe – they have not shown that they’re capable of handling anything but a minimal # of touches per game. Standing pat is not an option for JA.

agree 100%

Deuce, Fargas, Lewis are all upgrades over what we have now.

I agree with other posters

Ian Johnson might be the back-up we are looking for. He didn’t have much chance for the Vikes, when you are AP & C. Taylor you ain’t getting on the field much. I say we sign him, he has the speed (he ran 4.46 at the combine) to be a speed back along with the size (5’11" at 211) to be able to handle a good back-up role. Just my opinion.

so what happens

to kevin jones’ contract? does he still get paid? what would have happened if he made it through preseason and got injured in the first game?

Sucks

Because Jones is a good back when he is healthy. I guess I always thought you guys were fine at RB though. Your AP is actually better then most people give him credit for, and Wolfe is a quick, shifty back. Which is always good to have when you have two bruisers like Forte and AP. Rhodes could be a good back for you guys. He has proven he can get it done. Maybe Deuce otherwise.

We didn’t seem able to use AP or Wolfe last year, though. I shudder to think where we would have been if Forte hadn’t been such a good player from the word “go”.

RB

Retreads aren’t the answer.

I’d be ok with Edge though. We need to be a little patient and give Wolfe a chance. Seriously. Quick speedy… run up the middle type guy who doesn’t need to bounce it outside….. I say AP for ST, Wolfe for RB 2.
