Bears Sign 7 to Practice Squad

The Bears have begun to fill out their practice squad.

Those signed are Brett Basanez, Johan Asiata, Ervin Baldwin, Joe Clermond, Donovan Raiola, Will Ta'ufo'ou and Woodny Turenne.

One spot still remains, and the Bears could add tackle Cody Balogh or look for a running back to provide more depth. Another likely candidate is rookie linebacker Marcus Freeman, a fifth-round pick out of Ohio State.

Ryan Torain

Haven’t seen his named mentioned yet. He is a talented back, might have been the starter for the Broncos had Shanny stayed, as they probably wouldn’t have drafted Moreno. Broncos waived him early in camp when he sprained his knee, but he should be around the point of healed from that injury by now. He has a long history of getting knicked up, but showed in his brief time last year that he has the ability to play at this level.

Don't care...

I know I’ll get sh!t for this, but Ditka can go **** * all he wants. I was a Bear fan before he was the coach and I will continue to be a Bear fan long after he shuts the hell up. I am not bothered by his prediction, that is his job these days. I agree that the Bears and GB will fight it out for the NFC North title. I just think the Bears D will be the difference this year. Bears 11-5, GB 10-6, Viquens 8-8, Bears beat GB in the Divisional round, Philly in the NFC title game, and Pitts/NE in the SB!

That said, I want the Bears to get a quality #2 RB and find a way to keep Rideau around. Other than that, next draft needs to find the Bears a new left DE, a high-quality CB, and some D-line terror. The offense is set for 2-3 years, plus a vet WR.

There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots.

I humbly disagree, my friend...

Special Teams WILL be the difference. But I agree with everything else you said. I love Da Coach, but I can’t ever recall him being some sort of profound prognosticator. Everyone is on the Packers and ViQueens bandwagon. So be it! I prefer it when everyone picks against the Bears (which is usually every year!) ESPN especially.

They've seen Rideau everyday for like 3 years now.

His opportunity finally came, and he didn’t distinguish himself over DA. Our QB likes DA… that’s the deciding factor.

DA is fine.

It’s that other WR making the roster, that has most people pissed…

Honestly I can't say I blame him.

As much as it makes me ill to say it, that offense is looking really sharp. If Grant stays healthy, they’re going to be hard to stop. With the way our secondary looks and the big question marks at DT, I’m not nearly as enthused about this season as I’d like to be. Damn, it feels really weird to go into the season worried about our defense, but fairly confident in the offense and quarterback. Is this what it’s like to be a Colt’s fan?

Rideau

Has Rideau been claimed by anyone?

In regards to the practice suad guys...

I’d like to see either Malast or Rivera on that squad. Both guys have the basic raw talent, size, build and smarts to play LB in the NFL. Give either a year on PS duty to learn the form and discipline and they could be quality depth.

Like to see Clermond and Baldwin, though more Clermond. Joe C has the angry I like in the DE position. I would love to see both Joe and Melton be on next year’s roster because they worked their respective asses off this season to get on the team and make Wale’s decision to retire or continue playing next year an easy one!

Biggs reports we filled out the squad with an OT

Biggs is reporting this on the new Football site he's writing for. NFP
NFP: The Chicago Bears will complete their practice squad this afternoon when they announce the signing of offensive tackle Jim Marten to their practice squad.

Marten was waived by the Oakland Raiders on Saturday, and when he cleared waivers the Bears made a move for a player they have been pursuing for more than a year. Marten, a third-round draft pick from Boston College in 2007, was waived by Dallas last September. The Bears put in a waiver claim for him at the time, but he was awarded to the Raiders.

Oakland kept Marten inactive for 14 games last season before he appeared in the season finale on special teams. He is the third offensive lineman to be signed to the Bears’ eight-man developmental squad, joining center Donovan Raiola and guard Johan Asiata.

Good, that means they won't take Balogh back.

I know it’s only one game, but my god did he look awful against New York.
