hey I need some help (Fantasy Football)
I have never really played Fantasy Football before but after hearing about it and seeing how popular it is on this website I'd like to know if you guys have any tips or pointers (or maybe know of some really good sleepers). After looking into it a bit it looks to me that I should draft some more WR's and RB's because of the uncertainty at the position and because of the high risk high reward aspect.
Also my league is having their draft tomorrow night (Wednesday 09/09/09) at 8:15 P.M. Central Time. I still need about 2-4 guys so feel free to message me if you're interested and just send me your email. We're playing on ESPN.
Thanks,
Johnny Truant
P.S. here is a pic of a Vida Guerra, because WCG can never have too many pictures of attractive women

A few pointers...
You can never have too many good RB’s or WR’s.
QB and TE are both deep with talent, so try not to reach for either.
Try not to reach for sure things. Instead look for guys further down the board who are ready to break out.
If you get an elite RB who is a little older or has had injury problems, it’s a good idea to keep his backup on the bench in case of injury. (Tomlinson/Sproles)
Don’t draft a great player at a position you already have thinking you can just trade him for someone you want. Trades are a lot harder to complete than you’d think.
Don’t draft a kicker till the last few rounds.
Around the 9th or 10th round, or picks 90-100, depending how many teams you have in your league, is a good time to look for sleepers.
A few sleepers: Ray Rice, Earl Bennett, Hakeem Nicks, Percy Harvin, San Diego’s Def, Visanthe Shiancoe, Jeremy Shockey.
Always keep an eye on the waiver wire and free agents during the season. Guys will be breaking out every week, guys will get injured, and teams will have to scramble to fill bye weeks come week 4 so there will always be players available as long as you’re keeping a look out.

Good comment DetroitSucks.
The only other thing is,you should draft Olsen. Not to early but you should still draft Olsen. Because when it comes down to it he is our number 1 receiver.

Got Megatron?
The guy is a fantasy beast, and last year put up elite numbers with multiple QBs throwing to him.
FYI- Kevin Smith will be a good sleeper in a PPR.

I took Brandon Pettigrew
as a sleeper TE. I’m hoping he and Stafford develop some quick chemistry.

learn the point system
some leagues reward players per reception, some leagues deduct for turnovers, be sure you know all the rules before drafting

Check the points, Check the points, CHECK THE POINTS
If this is a Yahoo league, you can check the points from last year and the projection for this year. An example of this, in one league I’m in, I sorted the players not by ranking but by points. What I discovered was that Sproles and Leon Washington not only scored more points than any other RB but are projected to score more points than any other RB in the league (The commish set-up so return yards to make them extermely valuable).
Next come up with a plan and stick to it. Same league when I did the draft you should have heard the comments I got for drafting Washington and Sproles in RD #2 & #3. You might blow the draft to hell but you had a plan you stuck to, so enjoy the season.
Finally have fun, it’s a game made off any game. No matter what enjoy yourself.

The Reality Of The Situation Johnny
Don’t expect to do well your Rookie year. Fantasy Football has a learning curve just like in the NFL. Learn from your mistakes and look at other players draft at the end of the season to see where you miight want to improve. My steal this year is Whitten. When all the best receivers are off the board by the 5th or 6th round I have been able to grab Whitten in all my drafts. He will give you top Wide Receiver numbers at the Tight End position. A sleeper for you is James Davis, Running Back, Cleveland Browns. He averaged over 7 yards a carry in preseason and has lights out speed. When the Browns get tired of the Dinosoar Jamal Lewis look for Davis the be a top 10 Running Back in the league. Also Peyton Hillis of the Denver Broncos is a nice Running Back to have on your roster. The guy is a beast. Good luck!

johnny the mistake i made my rookie and sophmore fantasy year killed me
drafting too many people from one team. my rookie year had too many bear players cuz well i love the bears! and last year i had romo owens and witten which helped me kill until the end of the year if you stay away from that you should make some noise!

I still draft Bears players
Mainly cause I pay most attention to them in camp and preseason. I’ve been getting Hester in like 9-10th round as my 4th WR. Olsen at like 7th. This hasn’t happened in all my drafts, but if I see a value, I’ll snatch them up. Also took FOrte 1st overall in one draft, but I’ve been seeing that happen quite a bit in PPR leagues.

On to advice!
Like someone said earlier, handcuff your injury prone RB’s. Westbrook/Mc’Coy. Also a good QB/WR combo is nice to have. Manning/Wayne. Which is a good combo and seems fairly easy to get this season. Also if you’re not able to get a top QB, look for 2 descent QB’s and play their matchups. Palmer/Ryan. Thats the way I like to draft, but it is only an opinion.

Guidelines
DO NOT WASTE YOUR FIRST PICK ON A QB !!
After that you’ll be fine, pick up Cutler in round 5/6 and watch his numbers etc. If you draft a QB first a) He will be out for the season before his first game is over (b) draft Brees and all of your subsequent picks will suck, you will not have a RB/WR roster to envy. A good roster of RBs/WRs is worth more than a QB who may or may not put up monster numbers
Spend your first four picks getting the best RBs/WRs. If you pick late in the round, go WR/WR with your first two picks because they are the shallowest position. You can always pick up the great break-out WR no one has heard of after week one or two. There is only one Randy Moss/Andre Johnson. Pick an army of sensible, young RBs on the up, who can be selected from based on weekly matchups. The best RBs do not do well against tough Run defenses. Can’t do it.
Get the best player available. Don’t think you have to get a RB in round 2 jsut becasue you wanted to go RB/RB – if Larry Fitzgerald is staring you in the face versus Ryan Grant, you know what to do.
Do not under ANY circumstances draft a kicker before the last round. Change your kicker every week depending on the matchups, indoor/outdoor etc. Is it a snowstorm at that game or balmy with cicadas ?
Unless you get a top 3 defense, pick a new team up on the waivers each week based on matchups. Average defenses can have good numbers against woeful teams. Who’s playing the Browns this week etc. Example, week one, the Saints have the Lions.
Don’t waste picks on second TEs and second DSTs – you don’t HAVE to draft them. Fill your roster with backups at RB/WR who have upside e.g. Mendenhall/LeSean McCoy will probably be starting by week two, and putting up monster numbers.
Don’t draft RBs who play in committees. Draft RBs late that will rush for a lot of yards if the #1 goes down.
Ride that waiver wire. A young star WR shines on a team that had no obvious stars, get into that free agent list straight away and get your claim in. Kurt Warner could be picked up easily last year off waivers.
Do your homework. Are you picking a RB with a bad OL who play a lot of good defenses ? Are you picking a good WR with a bad QB who will be 3 and out for the season ? Ref Calvin Johnson. Has that player got a decent defense behind them that will get them the ball back ?
Don’t base your picks based on what a player has done in their career so far. LJ and LT were useless last year. Favre threw as many INTS as he did TDs, although threw 6 TDs in one game. If you don’t have the kind of QB who you can expect to get good numbers from each week. Pick two who can do okay based on matchups – use that waiver wire. Pick up a guy one week, drop him/release him the next.
Don’t be afraid to trade away good players if it makes your starting roster look stronger – players on your bench don’t score points. Don’t think “I can’t trade HIM!” – yes, you can. If you have 4 great WRs but only one good RB, make the hard choice and trade the guy you don’t play for a solid RB.
Who are your opponents in this league ? Is there an Eagles fan who will overpay for your McNabb or Westbrook or Jackson and give you an elite player for them ? Shop a team’s player to a fan and see what you can get.
Don’t handcuff players because they are injury prone – DON’T DRAFT INJURY PRONE PLAYERS IN THE FIRST PLACE ! If you have a stud monster RB and are happy with your roster at each position and can afford a ‘wasted’ pick, then by all means handcuff.
Don’t get carried away by little known players who had a monster pre-season. it was pre-season.
Don’t draft people just because they are on your favourite team. Are they going to put up numbers ?
Know your sleepers ! Chris Henry is back. Anthony Gonzalez will benefit from all the attention Wayne gets now that MH has retired etc. kevin Smith. Kevin Who ? watch. Jamaal Charles. Who ? Watch.
Know your players standing on their team : Greg Olsen will be the number one receiver in Chicago. He’s a TE, go figure.
Don’t draft rookie WRs. Wait until the unknowns start to pop up on stat sheets and nab them later.
Rookie RBs -can have upside, they’re young and fresh. But Shonn Greene has a sleeping monster ahead of him in Washington, who is a pro.
Never stop trying to trade and pay attention to the waiver wire ! You wouldn’t believe what some fools will drop from their team to make a space for some other fool. I found Lendale White sitting there the other day, unowned in a 12 player league. He scored 12 TDs last year, has dropped weight and gets the goal line carries for the Titans to boot. Sometimes people have to drop a good player due to bye week decisions and they have a clutter of players to rest in week 5. Ride the wire, it’s your make or break to the year ….

I didn't but,
I think he’ll have a solid year as a #3. I hope that’s where you have him on your depth chart…

Yes
I nabbed him pretty late in my draft. Wisenhunt said he’s picked up the passing game pretty well so far….that bodes well for later in the year when he takes over for Hightower.

Stay away
from players who you have an emotional attachment to. It burned me last year with S. Jackson and Big Ben. Also, watch out for guys who had a career year last year, but are also injury prone. Look for players from high scoring teams like the Cards, Saints, Pats, Texans- many of their players will perform well even though they’re second, third, or even fourth options.

thanks everyone for your advice. I'll let you know how I do in my two leagues
But my love of non-fantasy football will always overshadow my love of fantasy football. Anyone else pumped for Sunday? I have to be honest I’m half excited half nervous.
GB looked dang good this preseason, but I’m hoping our secondary can come through
