Wild Card Sunday--Open Game Thread

Well, Saturday's contests weren't very exciting. The Cowboys embarrassed the Eagles. The Jets looked shaky at times but still stronger than the Bengals, who looked like the struggling team that narrowly squeaked into the post-season.

Today brings us what should prove to be more exciting match-ups, the staunch Ravens defense has been reeling as of late, and the Patriots are dealing with injuries to key personnel.

Follow that up with Packers-Cardinals, which I'm particularly looking forward to. Go redbirds!

Sunday Contests:

Star-divide

Baltimore Ravens @ New England Patriots (1:00pm ET - CBS)

Green Bay Packers @ Arizona Cardinals (4:40pm ET - FOX)

Feel free to talk some games, some players, perform weird voodoo chants to hex Aaron Rodgers below.

Yeah CloudyFuture I agree

that the Bears LB corps (Williams, Roach, Hillenmyer, that is) aren’t Pro-Bowlers, but hey they are good and performed well (or at least above expectations) this year.

Next year, with a healthy Urlacher and Tinoesomoa (looks like we will resign him on the cheap) who knows what we could’ve done with a 3-4?

Oh yeah…let’s not forget about Briggs.

by MetalGearPeaceWalker on Jan 10, 2010 4:20 PM CST up reply actions

Think

Briggs and Urlacher would be ILB in a 3-4 but I do not think Roach, Hillenmeyer, or Jamar Williams would be ideal OLB for a 3-4….

Plus dont have that big run stuffing NT for a 3-4….

Course all that is IMO….These views/opinions are my own and do not reflect that of WCG….

NT

Sad thing is…we never saw much of Jauron Gilbert on the field. He probably wouldn’t have been that monster run-stopping NT needed for the 3-4…but who knows?

With this coaching staff…I’ve got to cross my fingers when it comes to the development of young players.

I wouldn’t want the 3-4 to be our base defense…but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with using it for situational purposes. Hope Fewell can be less of a buddy to Lovie and instead make him try new D plays.

If Cutler EVER

did what Warner just did, yelling at his WR like that, these announcers would be all over him.

by Dils on Jan 10, 2010 4:33 PM CST reply actions

Not at all

That’s leadership. Of course it helps that you (Warner) are one of the best in the game and a former league and SB MVP.

Leaders get on their underlings when they F++K up.

by axthelm on Jan 10, 2010 4:36 PM CST up reply actions

I'm talking about the perception

He’s yelling at the top of his lungs at Doucet on national TV and the annoucers didn’t say anything about it. If that’s Cutler, it’s all about his attitude and how he needs to “set an example” and “communicate to his young Wrs better”

by Dils on Jan 10, 2010 4:38 PM CST up reply actions

The perception is this:

Kurt Warner got the woeful AZ. Cards to the SB last season.

He’s won a Super Bowl and been named both the league and SB MVP.
He’s considered one of the best in the business.

That’s why he isn’t criticized. The media act like he knows the the Hell he’s doing.

He does.

by axthelm on Jan 10, 2010 4:46 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not talking about Warner

I’m not even saying that they are wrong for not saying anything but I don’t want to keep hearing about Cutler’s attitude on the sidelines every time Knox doesn’t complete a route and he has to talk to him. Besides I think Cutler was really patient this year with our receiving core.

by Dils on Jan 10, 2010 4:49 PM CST up reply actions

I though you said:

If Cutler EVER did what Warner just did.

Sounds like you’re comparing the two to me.

by axthelm on Jan 10, 2010 4:52 PM CST up reply actions

Not them

But the criticism or lack thereof of the two of them. Warner yells and it’s leadership. Culter yells and he’s a petulant brat that needs to grow up and be a better teammate.

by Dils on Jan 10, 2010 4:54 PM CST up reply actions

I think hes comparing

the perception of the 2 to me…IMO he is correct….

Heck even if rodgers had yelled at a WR he would be viewed as a leader…

Jay yelling = immature biatch….other QBs yelling = leaders…..Thats what I got out of it anyways…..dunno if that was dils assessment though….

"What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. - Jay Cutler to Ron Turner during the season

by CloudyFuture on Jan 10, 2010 4:56 PM CST up reply actions

There is always a double standard.

Farve, or maybe Matt fricken Lienart would yell at someone critics would say what a leader and he was right for doing that. Cutler does the same thing they would say he needs to keep his attitude in check.

Cutler is basically the media’s punching bag. He has been patient this year and aside from him struggling except for the last 2 games. He did nothing wrong he has been quiet and done what the coaches want him to do.

by T.Moore on Jan 10, 2010 4:54 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly

The more I think about it since the season ended, I’m really glad we got Cutler and think he did a decent job with what he had. The INTs were terrible but if he can cut them down and continue to grow with this roster, I think he’s going to be considered a top 3 QB in the next 3 years.

by Dils on Jan 10, 2010 4:56 PM CST up reply actions

QB's should yell when necessary

That’s the best and quickest way to get a point across.

Some, however, come off not so much as being leaders but as being cry babies when things go bad.

There’s a big difference between those two.

by axthelm on Jan 10, 2010 4:59 PM CST up reply actions

I never really see Jay yell at his WRs much

He just yell at the Refs. Which is the HCs job

by T.Moore on Jan 10, 2010 5:01 PM CST up reply actions

that did turn me off on him….every time he got hit he would look back and ask for the flag….but eh……he did get some calls from asking for the flag all game so….ya….

Proof that it doesn't matter how many 1st round picks you have but how you use them:

Denver took Knowshown Moreno and Robert Ayers. They could have had Brian Orakapo (Pro Bowler) and Beanie Wells. Ooops!

Kinda makes me feel a little better going into this year’s draft.

by Dils on Jan 10, 2010 5:24 PM CST reply actions

My only problem is

how much production did the Bears get in there first 3 picks this year….Angelo has to get players that can contribute NOW this time (seeing as FA is going to be complicated this year) and lets hope he can do that this time…

by CloudyFuture on Jan 10, 2010 5:28 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah I know but

if we are going to keep playing the cover 2 with Lovie and since the you have to be strong up the middle in that defense, shouldn’t the Bears do this:

If you know Urlacher going to be back go ahead and keep Tommie Harris because you can’t replace him with anything better anyway. Bite the bullet and finally move Tillman to free safety, then go ahead and draft the best corner available in the 3rd round. That way at least you’re as strong as possible with the defense that Lovie wants to run.

by Dils on Jan 10, 2010 5:35 PM CST up reply actions

Tillman to FS

I do not think will ever happen…..Think Lovie even said that….

With this draft being so top heavy cause juniors coming out this year fearing a CBA will put a limit on rookie monies in 11 that 2nd rounder for adams was huge….I think they should find some way to get that 2nd rounder back but I do not think they can do that sadly….

It's because.

Moreno was in the SEC the strongest conference.

Beanie was in the Big Ten not as strong as the SEC but still strong.

SEC gets more coverage so it makes sense that Moreno gets more accolades than Wells.

But I always thought that Beanie is better than Moreno.

by T.Moore on Jan 10, 2010 5:50 PM CST up reply actions

SEC gets more coverage

because they’re better, faster and have had 4 different schools win the last 4 BCS championships.

i don't mind buck

at least he seems to watch the game, correct his mistakes and will actually describe the play going on.

Which is enough for me and about 1000x more than you see from most pxp guys anymore.

The NFL's officials still suck.

I feel that way probably because more times than not, we don’t get many calls go our way. Now if your New England with a cry baby qb, thats a different story. Should be a little more even across the board no matter who you are.

Dennis Green drafted him

with the third overall pick in the 2004 draft.
This makes a great case for drafting the ‘Best Available Player’ and not drafting for need.

The year before in 2003 the Cards drafted WR’s in the 1st and 2nd rounds (Bryant Johnson and Anquan Boldin).

Arizona didn’t need a WR but drafted Fitzgerald anyway.

That's a penalty

the refs will almost always over look- I’ve seen it happen before. I compare it to a punter being “roughed” after getting his kick blocked.

what a nice day of football. New England got smoked and I cant stand them. GB and Arizona, even with no defense on either side, was one of the best play-off games I have ever seen that didn’t include da Bears. I am so happy that GB lost. What a nice day it was.
