Matt Forte under the knife

Wcg_thumb_injury_medium

This kind of came out of nowhere.  Matt Forte had knee surgery.  Here is the link from the Chicago Tribune.

The clean-up procedure followed a post-season MRI. Forte sprained the medial collateral ligament in his knee during the Bears' 25-19 victory at Seattle in Week 3, but it is unclear if the surgery stems from that specific injury.

As always, as soon as we get any more info, we'll be sure to pass it along.

Also in the same article the Trib is reporting that Brad Maynard had his hip scoped.

Do have to wonder...

how much of a role that the week three injury played in Forte’s production this season?

Despite the gawdawful line play, would he/ could he have been “shiftier” in finding holes?

I Have To Agree Smudgers.

Did our crack coaching staff not realize something was wrong with Matt Forte all season? And why did Matt Forte play hurt? Did he tell anybody his knee was whacked? I guess I have a lot of questions in my mind regarding this situation and how it affected the team.

They only know

as much as Forte leads them to believe. His case is one I would have to side with the coaches and management.

Whoops.

I’ve been tough on him for not creating more yards in spite of the bad line play. He always seemed to get happy feet at the line, and not willing to hit a hole hard. But if he was playing with injuries that were this bad all year, he looks more like a trooper.

I wonder how these injuries would affect things like burst through the hole, and making cuts? Any thoughts?

they would make a huge difference

I think he showed a lot of courage for even trying.

You have to respect his effort

If nothing else, the man played 13 games hurt. Not just dinged up, but hurt enough to need surgery post season. Forte may not be #34’s heir, but he’s the kind of player I want on the Bears; smart, well spoken, hard working and team focused. We need more players like Forte.

Props to Matt for sucking it up, and enduring the whispers that he was a one year wonder.

Especially since the Bears would have probably rotated AP and Garrett Wolfe in his place. I’m pretty sure that he wasn’t fooling the defenses though, since they were teeing up on Cutler all season. A stupid risk for the team to take though, especially after the season, for all intents and purposes, was over .

by BigGeorgeTX on Jan 21, 2010 2:38 PM CST up reply actions

I just hope they keep him and not decide to trade him and then he goes somewhere else and tears it up. I hate seeing that. It seems like every team in the NFL has former bears on the team and they all do pretty good. Its crazy how a different offense can do that. If Forte played hurt he did a great job playing hurt. He still didnt do that bad this year. Yeah he didnt hit the holes and finish runs but he did have close to 950 yards which isnt that bad. Hopefully he can heal up for this next season of dreams. I’d keep him over Peterson because he doesnt have that tendency to fumble.

by jheun on Jan 21, 2010 6:29 PM CST up reply actions

well...

at least we know he’s tough. Played all season with a partially torn calf muscle and 13 games with a sprained mcl. Lets just hope this stuff doesn’t linger. Maybe if we had a capable back up he wouldn’t have to put his body on the line.

I was thinking the same thing about toughness.

The jury is still out on Bell. From the little bit I saw of him last year, he is more than capable. Too bad Lovie waits till he’s backed in a corner to play young talent. Many other teams would have had the kid out there sooner.

Same thing goes for Iglesias in the last couple of games

only special teams. It would have been nice to see what kind of routes he ran and if he could catch the ball…unless the Bears coaching staff doesn’t think those two things are important at the WR postiton.

Problem with that

I know a player has to start somewhere, but i wonder if maybe sometimes that is part of the problem. if DJ Moore can run down the field and tackle, that doesn’t make him a great shut down corner. that means he can run straight and tackle. something all Defensive players should be able to do.

Putting him in Game time situations when our season is shot, that would give us a great snapshot at his ability to make real time decisions that don’t cost us anything.

by Mathias-K on Jan 21, 2010 10:04 AM CST up reply actions

Agreed.

He doesn’t have the greatest yards per carry or the fastest finishing speed once he does break through. But he’s a pretty darn good asset to have in the passing game, both catching and blocking. He’s also pretty good at holding on to the ball. I think he’s a great all-around back.

And holding on to the ball is the only thing that Forte is better at than AP. Yeah I know that has nothing to do with anything.

by T.Moore on Jan 22, 2010 11:00 AM CST up reply actions

Lets not beat him up

so much. After last year everyone was all about matt forte, now because of one bad season (by everybody) all I hear is matt forte isnt an elite back. No shit really? Just how many ‘elite’ backs are out there? maybe 5? you dont have to be an elite player to be successful and productive. We need a better O-line, period. Then Forte can have better opportunities to gain positive yards. Chris Johnson wouldnt even be able to gain yards with a pathetic line as ours.

by Berserker333 on Jan 21, 2010 9:32 AM CST reply actions

I agree. You may be able to find RBs with better rushing skills,

But if you take him as a whole package, he brings you a great mix of rushing, speed, hands, blitz pickup, route running, and football smarts. There aren’t too many Jack Of All Trades RBs with the skillset of Forte. He may not be AP, but he’s a really good back who does what’s asked of him.

by ChiLobo#23 on Jan 21, 2010 12:19 PM CST up reply actions

wow...

What a trooper to play all season with a bum knee and to get the yardage he did get with a bum knee and shotty line play is quite impressive..name one elite back that can (or would) play an entire season with a hurt knee. um yeah i didnt think you could. Forte has work ethic and he may be a lot more elite than expected knowing what we know now.

Not an elite back, but an elite player.

Forte playing for three months hurt, tying Hester for second on the team in receptions, and being a stout blocker prove the Forte is an elite all-around player, though not necessarily an elite back. He is absolutely above average, and I will take Forte over 90% of the backs in this league because of his versatility, endurance, and guts. This isn't bad news, it's good news

I’d be more worried about his ability for this league if he wasn’t injured. The surgery wasn’t “major,” but just a clean-up procedure that should help him get 100% healthy for ’10.

Elite Backs ?

RODGER CRAIG:: Going through the backfield Rodger was average at best. As a reciever out of the backfield and as for yardage after catch, he was awesome. Power runner, so-so. Open field, great. Forte looks a lot like Rodger when he started his career. Maybe thats the proper way to use Matt along with a good power fullback.

I'll buy that.

But being compared to Rodger Craig isn’t really saying much. The Niners won because of such weapons as Montana, Rice, Clark, and later on Young and Rice alone was good for about 10 wins.

forte

by Hatchetm on Jan 21, 2010 11:29 AM CST up reply actions

A good thing !!

The nice thing about Rodger was the way that Bill Walsh used his talents. Fake hand offs on end arounds and slants allowed Montana more time to find his targets. Rodger was the unknown factor in almost all of the plays that he was involved in. Plus rodger was a real good blocker. He was a master at check blocking and slipping through the line to recieve his pass. Once into the secondary he was hell on wheels. For the most part Montana was at his best doing 15 to 20 yarders and let his recievers go for it. With the right personel Walsh showed the league how to run the West coast offence which I think was the best when run correctly. How long were the Niners in the top 4 teams in the league? The reason that they were so good in their era was that Bill Walsh took the time to TEACH his offence how to play his way.

Forte needs help whether or not he is an elite back or just really good.

Two back system is what I am screaming. Seems like when Bell finally settled in to play some, Forte was gaining better yardage than at any time earlier in the season. Yes, I know that the OL was playing better, but you have to give Bell some credit for Forte’s success towards the end of the season. I say we bring in CT to share the responsibilities with Forte, and then keep Bell as back up.

Are You Kidding Me ???????

Sorry but we were the " Two Back System " pioneers . Thomas Jones and Ced Benson were our 1-2 punch . The Jets and a few other teams took our idea and improved apon it . But rest assured it was ours first .

As for Matt Forte not being elite …… name me a few backs that have his skill set . A back that has good running skills , good ball skills to catch the ball no matter where you line him up , is an outstanding blocker when called apon and possess the instincts that he does . When you start naming these guys you’ll find out that he is in fact an elite talent when healthy . He may not have the speed or quicks but his knowledge of the game and his smarts in general make up for it ( kinda like Emmitt Smith , a tough SOB with well rounded skills ) .

As for this AP ( the Vikings AP that is ) is the elite back sorry again wrong answer . An elite back dosn’t turn the ball over like he does . He fumbles , and losses them , more than any other player at his position . Is he a dominiate runner , yes . Is he elite in my mind no because his glaring weakness has killed his team at points . When I think elite I think Walter Payton , Jim Brown , Barry Sanders ect… .
