Around SBN: Yankees Deny Rumors That Team Is For Sale

With all the talk of acquiring a safety or corner how about this guy?

Bob Sanders? Hes injury prone as Mike Brown but the guy is a playmaker if and when healthy. He is a heatseeking missile as well as a guy that can pick passes off and force some fumbles. With his injury troubles the Colts may have found a replacement in Melvin Bullit who had a pretty decent season. Sanders has basically only played in two full seasons.

Maybe a second next year and nate vasher?

What do you guys think? possible? not worth it? or hell yea?

except

if i’m not mistaken, sanders is a strong safety. we have too many of those as it is.

I don't know...

I guess I feel like he isn’t a ‘need’ right now. Plus, I understand that he’s good when healthy, but how often is that? I just don’t feel like he would be a good investment. But that’s just my opinion, he could easily prove me wrong.

Personally..

I’d look at Antoine Bethea from the Colts before I look at Sanders.

by boondock_saint812 on Jan 27, 2010 3:17 PM CST reply actions

Right but

the guy is only 25 and he’s playing some good football and with how injury prone Sanders is I don’t see why he wouldn’t be resigned or why he wouldn’t want to stick with a team always fighting for championships in January.

by PolishSausage.Ditka.Bears. on Jan 27, 2010 4:15 PM CST up reply actions

Im not saying they should chase him but if hes out there something to consider

i agree if bethea is a free agent hes a better option because we dont need to send picks indys way.
this was just something i was wondering about,

by Bear Lovin 21 on Jan 27, 2010 3:38 PM CST reply actions

is he an improvement? Yes. so get him.

doesn’t mean we should not continue to look for younger players or that there are not other guys that I would prefer. I just don’t understand not signing guys that are instantly vast improvements over what we currently have. Frankly nobody in our secondary (aside from Tillman) has established themselves enough to justify not bringing in a pro bowl veteran like Sanders, as if they are so good that they are above competing for their jobs.

by No It All on Jan 27, 2010 3:44 PM CST reply actions

+1...

way to cut through the shit!

Still, I’d rather see the Bears get a WR, FS, DT, DE, OG, DE, CB and RB first, but if Sanders could come along with that group, why not. Besides, if he got hurt, the Bears have a whole slew of depth at SS!

by LostInSTL on Jan 27, 2010 3:50 PM CST up reply actions

I don't see how Sanders

is a “vast improvement” when he’s extremely injury prone over some of our young SS. He had success in the league before but who gives a sh*t if he can’t stay on the field. SS is a position that we can give some time for development with our younger guys but FS is something that needs to be addressed and established right now. I don’t think it would be wise to use picks that we are already lacking in on a position that isn’t of the highest concern, especially on a guy as injury prone as Sanders.

by PolishSausage.Ditka.Bears. on Jan 27, 2010 4:10 PM CST up reply actions

Injuries are a fact of life in the NFL

we decided not to resign Mike Brown last year because of injury concerns and he went on to play in 16 games and have one of the best years of his career. I am not saying any trade for Sanders would be worth it or to ignore salary ramifications and get him at all costs, but you don’t always get to pick how you improve and a team needs to jump at the chance to improve whenever it can. Bob Sanders is a better football player than Al Afalava, having them both would be a good thing, not a bad thing.

by No It All on Jan 27, 2010 4:30 PM CST up reply actions

It would be a good thing

but at what cost exactly are to talking to acquire him? If he is released by the Colts and we can sign him at a good price then I would be for it. If not then I’m also okay with developing what we have because I think solid play from your FS would improve your SS play regardless of which of our current SS were on the field at the time. I’m not against it if the cards fall in our favor, I just think the Bears really showed how much not having a reliable FS leaves massive holes in our defense and that is a position we cannot afford to go into next season without addressing. We play “musical safeties” a bit too much in Chicago.

by PolishSausage.Ditka.Bears. on Jan 27, 2010 5:09 PM CST up reply actions

agreed...

but IMO a big part of the musical chairs is attempting to fill the position(s) with guys on the roster (mainly 5th round draft picks) instead of going out and getting a veteran in free agency (ala Sanders) to lock down the position. If one of the younger guys eventually beats out a veteran safety, then that’d be great, but what bothers me is allowing bad players to compete against other bad players and then expecting solid production….

by No It All on Jan 27, 2010 5:17 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed as well..

I wouldn’t call them bad players but their not stellar either. I really hope that this coaching search doesn’t take away from their free agent search, I’ve been thinking about that and worrying it might. Not because it’s normal to do so but because it’s the Bears and they sometimes have overconfidence in what they think a coach can do with a player. If Bob gets cut, then I wouldn’t mind the move as long as they can acquire a FS in FA as well or maybe can trade up into the 2nd if there’s a good looking prospect. Although Angelo is an early round disaster.

by PolishSausage.Ditka.Bears. on Jan 27, 2010 9:36 PM CST up reply actions

oh that FS prospect in the second round exists

His name is Kam Chancellor. Not sure if I’ve mentioned him before, but he’d be nice.

by No It All on Jan 27, 2010 11:27 PM CST up reply actions

only mentioned 8585 times

but hey whos counting?
he does look like a beast

by Bear Lovin 21 on Jan 28, 2010 12:00 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly.

We need to fill the roster with veterans rather than poach ‘maybe’ youngsters. Sharper or Dawkins would have been perfect this year whilst the juniors learn their trade ridin’ the pine.

by Irish Bears Fan on Jan 28, 2010 3:45 AM CST up reply actions

I would still be happy getting Sharper...

next season. He would be an instant improvment to what we have now. I read a little about Kam Chancellor after one of No It Alls comments, dude is a beast. I would love to get him as well. Lets hope they go the right direction when tending to our necessities for db’s.

by Bears fan 4-ever!!! on Jan 28, 2010 8:23 PM CST up reply actions

Although I will always

view him as a ,gulp, Packer, if the draft comes up short a 1 -2 year deal makes sence.

by jay42 on Jan 29, 2010 12:08 PM CST up reply actions

its a coincidence tat i think about sanders to bears alot

but i think bears want to develop al and add players at needy positions

by Zoro on Jan 27, 2010 4:18 PM CST reply actions

why not

if the colts cut him he may have a lot to prove and come back strong.. hes a hard hitter and a ball hawk.. look at darren sharper of the saints who btw the bears passed on!!! good move pencil neck ( ie angelo) the guys can still play and still hit

by achilles10 on Jan 27, 2010 6:52 PM CST reply actions

Sharper also

didn’t necessarily want to go from a Tampa-2 based defense to another Tampa-2 based defense. The Vikings run the exact same defense as us, they just have better personnel to do so. Not to mention it would have been his 3rd NFC North team he would of been a part of.

by PolishSausage.Ditka.Bears. on Jan 27, 2010 9:29 PM CST up reply actions

true

plus at the time a team with drew brees attracts him more then orton at the time and i agree but the change of scenery from the nfc north

by Bear Lovin 21 on Jan 27, 2010 9:52 PM CST up reply actions

He's a strong safety.

We need free safety – can’t give up any picks to get a position that’s covered. Get Sharper or Dawkins for a year to fill in until we’re set with a guy for the future.

by Irish Bears Fan on Jan 28, 2010 3:40 AM CST reply actions

love him but he's Mike Brown

This guy is awsome! You watch the Colts when he’s playing and you see a different Indy Def. just like the Bears Def when mike was healthy. We can’t risk it however. He goes down & what do we have? what we have now but with another postion not getting the attention it needs.
