Quick Recap: Bears Beat Lions in Season Finale

Winning the final two games of the season may have saved a few jobs in the coaching ranks of the Chicago Bears.  Say what you will about the team, but at least offensively, they have shown they are capable of making some things happen when the offensive line plays decently.

Quick stats:

Jay Cutler: 22/36, 276 yds, 4 TDs, 0 TDs, 122.0 Rating

Matt Forte: 16 carries, 101 yds

Devin Aromashodu: 5 catches, 46 yds, 2 TDs

Lance Briggs: 12 tackles (10 solo)

Yeah, and that was looking like a close thing a few weeks ago.

This team has lots of young talent. Just need to bring it out and lead it.

May the wind be always at your back, and may your placekicker have icewater in his veins.

That's up for debate

but certainly the offensive side of the ball is coming around.

Yep. Just because we have a "young" team

doesn’t qualify them as young and talented.

In my perspective, most of the younger players are on the field by default, because the competition for the starting job wasn’t good enough.

At least

the coaches and staff were right on about the receivers though. Good nucleus there.

I see it differently

They spat out the company line about their receivers like they always do with the rest of the roster. And quite frankly, our group is non-impressive. They’re just not very good at identifying talent there.

Devin Aromashodu, and undrafted free agent on his 5th or 6th team, is probably the best overall receiver in the group, and our coaching staff didn’t even want to put him on the field all year, despite our QB telling them otherwise.

Devin Hester is being forced to play that position by Jerry Angelo, who saw him as a WR the day they drafted him… as told by Hub Arkush earlier this week.

Earl Bennett couldn’t be trusted to be on the field at all last year, yet he proved capable of the job, if not stellar this year. So… can our coaches be trusted to get the right guys on the field, or not?

Johnny Knox is a great raw talent, but I’m not convinced that this coaching staff can make him a professional receiver.

And Juaquin Iglesias… where do I start? Entering the draft, the Bears situation at WR was a joke. If you were a WR in last year’s draft, you were dying to get picked by the Bears, because you knew you had a legitimate shot to earn significant playing time as a rookie. Well, Iglesias couldn’t even get active for a game day until this week.

Those are questions

most coaching staffs go through at the end of each season. By all accounts, the receivers exceeded expectations, and deserve some credit along with Darryle Drake. Hester has statistically progressed over the past three campaigns, and if not for an injury he would’ve had above-average numbers for a wideout. Frankily, with the way Aroma, Bennett, and Hester have improved, I feel confident that there are more pressing needs (FS, G, RT) on the team. Furthermore, Bennett proved that a receiver could look totally lost one year, and look fairly polished in year two.

Well, we never really got to see him last year. They didn’t think he was worth a shot ahead of the stiffs who were mailing it in week after week. I’m with SackMan on the coaches…..

3 WR positions

He was asked to learn all of them before getting to play. Sure, they’ve had their fair share of personnel foul-ups with developing (or lack thereof) WRs, but I believe they’ve actually done a good job this season. When and where do you play Iglesias this season? There’s literally no room or time to get him in the game. It was a difficult enough time to get Aroma in there. At this point, I couldn’t really care less about Iglesias’ development. The trio of Aroma, Hester, and Knox will scare any defensive coordinator with their speed; it will help clear lanes for Forte and Olsen as well.

by propheteer on Jan 3, 2010 7:23 PM CST up reply actions

It was our coaches who asked him to learn 3 positions

And slowed down his development.

But, if it took them until week 14 to realize Aromashodu was the best target Cutler had, how will we even know if Iglesias is any good at all? Cutler wanted DA on the field on opening day. And campaigned for him over and over again. What’s the problem here?

Wasn't he hurt on opening day?

I agree, Aroma should’ve been in there before he was, but I doubt he would’ve helped them get to the playoffs.

I'm not debating whether he would have helped

this bad team go to the playoffs.

I’m debating our coaching staff’s competence.

When QB you gave away the farm for is telling you he wants a certain receiver on the field… you’d think his coaches would listen.

Don't get me wrong

In hindsight it looks really bad that he wasn’t in there earlier, but all I’m saying is the WR corp was better than expected. It’s definitely an indictment on Lovie’s management of the team.

I think Lovie and Co are either poor judges of talent,

or poor at developing talent. Or both.

The debacle of the safety position for 3 consecutive years in a defense that is built around the concept of two deep safeties is the #1 indicator.

#2, is the list of former Bears who have been solid NFL starters for several seasons on other teams throughout the league.

Their flat-out refusal to draft or sign a true FS boggles the mind. Add Lovie’s inability to develop an athletic talent like D. Manning.

In his defense

( I hate defending him) but there was nothing available at FS except Darren Sharper ( who would have been a nice fit). The draft was void of talent at FS so they had to wait it out a year. It is a tough spot to fill.

Positive thing about the end of the season:

Those pointilism style speckled shirts and hats on the sidelines will be replaced with the 2010 design. That’s gotta be an improvement.

Where can I get a job designing the NFL sideline wear? Somebody’s got that job, and they need a stern talking-to.

Disappointing year….

Forte, DA, Jay played well Hester had couple big questions….

We improved the last 2 games…..

Changes (in the coaching staff) happen every year…

Im the Bears coach until some one comes up to me and tells me other wise….

Tim Shaw seems like each week improves….

We did not do good enough to make the playoffs….Once we hit 9 losses was disappointing…..Liked the way we finished….Playoffs starting soon and we are not apart of it and thats not good…..

Jay finished strong….Showed what he can be and that should be for next season…

Seems like the Devin Hester experiment is over

Just based on the box score, DA got twice as many targets and two scores. I didn’t see the game this week though, so maybe someone who watched has a slightly different take. Wonder if Hester goes back to returns next year.

by seitori on Jan 3, 2010 3:51 PM CST reply actions

I actually think the Devin mix works well,

Aromashadu using his size underneath, Hester stretching everything vertical; however, I believe this can be achieved (and possibly to greater affect) by moving Hester to the slot.

All in all, though, I really think our WRs are poised for greatness to come.

It's not over

Why is everyone all over him after getting hurt? Before his injury, and offensive ineptness, he was on pace for 1,000 yards, 6 TDs, and 70 receptions. He’s very valuable, please look a little deeper into the game…please.

word

not to mention over 200 total yards today and the longest play from scrimmage. Plus that was his “pace” before Cutler really got going towards the end of the season.

Hester has never played with another quality receiver the 2 Devin’s could be really good as Defenses can no longer focus on 1 instead of the other.

by No It All on Jan 3, 2010 4:26 PM CST up reply actions

I want to be optimistic but until they can show this kind of effort when it actually means something,

I’m not convinced. That includes Jay’s play. It’s even more frustrating to see what he can do with his talent when he uses his head and makes good decisions, but are the last two performances indicative of him not being good under pressure as he showed most of the season when, technically, they were still in it?

Also, and those of you who want to call me a *&^%ing Hester hater can start in, it’s not that I hate Hester, but I think with the development of the other receivers (and why didn’t we at least get to see if Iglesias can catch a ball?) keeping Devin actually can retard the entire receiving corp. He dropped a sure TD early and “the fastest player on the field” gets caught from behind on the one catch late in the game. He had one decent KR but, again, it was because nobody touched him. This guy does not make people miss and goes down by a single arm tackle all the time. He doesn’t “play fast” at the WR spot so I’d rather see us spend the time developing Knox who does play as fast at WR as he does on the track and is a more elusive runner.

I really want to see a total housecleaning of coaches, but I’m afraid this gives the McCaskeys the excuse they needed. I wish they’d remember we beat a beat up and terrible Lions team. This wasn’t the NE Patriots!!! If Schwartz didn’t try that stupid fake punt on 4th and 8, the game might have been a different story.

Sorry for the rant, I’m just upset that the season is over for us.

For how many injuries there were on the defensive side...

I thought we played pretty respectably defensively. Couple of plays where Bowman seemed a little lost, but he could be a solid CB – looked to me like he knocked the ball out of Calvin Johnson’s hands on what could have been a touchdown grab.

Offensively, I know it was the Lions, but Forte convinced me he can still be a good RB as long as he gets good blocking. Aromashodu looked like a great red zone weapon today. Shaping up to be a pretty interesting WR situation for next year.

Mullin on the post game show

Looks like Turner is all but gone based on what he is hearing and what Turner himself told Mullin…He and Jay do not see eye to eye….BUT the last 2 games might be enough to make them consider keeping Turner….

They could wait until they let Lovie go after the 2010 should that need to be done since they dont want Cutler having 3 OC in 3 years….It would not stun him to see Turner back based on that and the last 2 games of the season….

In the end though just based on what he hears….Turner is toast Lovie is back….

Snap Reaction...

Got the job done against a team we were supposed to beat. This game should NOT have been as close as it was going into the 4th quarter. It would be a travesty if thiswin “earns” the coaching staff a reprieve.

Everywhere I looked this game were plays made by players that would never have seen the field if not for injuries to Lovie’s first choices. Anthony Adams was a beast, so was Aromashadu, of course. Steltz showed a nose for the ball.

Omiyale was atrocious. How many penalties is he gonna commit on one drive? These past 2 wins almost disgust me even more than if we had lost them. I can’t quite put my finger on why. Anyone care to help?

Don't underestimate what a healthy #54 will do next year

Inserting a pro bowl caliber MLB into any lineup makes a huge difference I might even argue that if he was healthy we would be a playoff team, so in that way we may be “closer” than I / people realize.

Urlacher will make the entire D better, especially the front 4. We still need secondary help (FS Kam Chancellor in the 3rd pretty please) and an OG (ha). A couple of legitimate free agent signings and this is a good, possibly great team.

Unusually optimistic now that we don’t have to play for another year but whatever.

The key to the defense moving forward is Tommie Harris. If we get him as he was last week against the Vikes, he makes everyone a ton better including Urlacher. At this point, Urlacher is more valuable for his leadership than his ability, imo.

but when that leadership actually starts turning into plays next year his impact will be greater and more appreciated

by No It All on Jan 3, 2010 4:50 PM CST up reply actions

If #54 is free to run sideline to sideline then yes – he is a heckuva a MLB. However, as Harris has struggled so has that entire defense. I like Urlacher a ton, but I am not sure he is not on the down side of his career. Not saying he isn’t extremely valuable – I just tend to believe Harris is the player this defense needs the most.

by poolboy55 on Jan 3, 2010 4:53 PM CST up reply actions

At minimum, Ron Turner, Dallas Drake, and Pep Hamilton need to go. If Lovie stays, he needs to go back to being the HC, not DC. So 4 new hires that I see. Perhaps Babich as well but am willing to cut him some slack since Pisa and Urlacher were out all season. Another indictment on this staff is that Devin A. was tucked away until December and that is not acceptable. Is he fools gold or the real deal?

by poolboy55 on Jan 3, 2010 4:41 PM CST reply actions

Turner and Forte have to go IMO along with Pep

Lovie stays because of the contract.

We need an offense for 2010, not 1995.

Turner ran the same crap plays over and over, no change in formation or motion all season. Once again today, he ran 1 or 2 rollouts or bootlegs, no reverses, no end arounds to Hester, no draw plays, no middle screen to Olsen or the back, no split backs, one bomb (Hester dropped), no 4 wides, no 5 wides, no trips,

TE, receiver on each side, I formation over and over and over.

No wonder Jay gets so frustrated.

Forte??

Don’t you think the Oline has something to do with his performance this year? Not one of our bigger worries. Although I would like to see a second back with much more speed (don’t say garrett Wolfe)

Agreed!

With Forte and Bell, we are okay..

It would be MADNESS to pick a RB in the draft where we could get some defense / oline!

was pretty much screaming for the Bears to bring in chester taylor in the offseason….

But I do think that Forte and Bell splitting carries would be pretty good…..

The only problem with Bell

is he is a clone of Forte. Not a speed guy and I think they need a Felix Jones guy for third downs etc..

but i doubt we’ll get some 4.2 speed on day 2/3 of the draft.

Lovie should be fired, because he put his butt on the line and took over the defense.

And the defense sucked… historically.

They allowed 30+ points 5 times this season, and allowed the Bengals and Cardinals to score on their first 5 possessions (I think).

The lost games 45-10, 41-21, 36-10, and 31-7. And… they allowed the friggin Lions (averaging 15.9 points per game) to score 24 points in game 1, and 23 points in the finale.

every beat writer is saying the same thing….Lovie is safe….Heck you even have some saying that Turner could be back because of the last 2 games….

Virginia likes the fact that Lovie is a good religious family man…..He took them to the super bowl before and thinks he can do it again….

I want a coach who’ll sacrifice a child* if he thinks it’ll get his team ready to win.

  • Well, not really, but I really couldn’t care less about whether Lovie is a good religious family man, only whether or not he can get the job done. Evidently, no.

absolutely

it is a great thing that Lovie is strong in his faith and his family. It is a wonderful thing to see in today’s times, but that should be the determining factor in a tie amongst two coaches of equal skill. Not for retaining mediocre talent…

And, our Defensive Coordinator lose his job (Lovie). And still have the same head coach. That’s gotta be some kind of first in NFL history.

Ha!

Yes, we should not want a QB who is expected to throw the ball. Especially to have to throw it against a dominant team like the Chiefs.

Chiefs play-by-play announcer says towards the end of the game ‘The Chiefs are beating the Denver Broncos, in Denver, by 20 points. Let me repeat that in case you just drove into a snow bank …’

Comments for another lost season

When Urlacher got hurt, you knew the season was over, right? This team could not be expected to put enough points on the board consistently to compensate for a porous defense.

Cutler seems like the real deal, the O Line needs to get better and Jay needs another receiver. Sure he threw a hell of a lot of picks, but I think some of the time he was trying to make something out of nothing. Living here in AZ I didn’t get to see that many games, it seemed the play calling has been in a rut for 3 years, too.

They played their last 2 games as if their head coach’s job depended on it. What happened the rest of the year? I heard that some of the players want Lovie back because they play their heart out for him. What? Maybe they played their butts off half the time. Other than the Vikings win, they only beat the teams they were supposed to beat. That’s not playing your hearts out week in and week out.

Lovie will stay, McK’s are not going to eat $11 million unless they had a stacked team for a good coach to swoop in on and take them deep in the playoffs. Good teams find ways to win and grind it out to get enough wins to get to post season play. I only see 2 more wins we should have had this year, that still is 2 wins shy of the playoffs.
