Quick Recap / Afternoon Open Thread

If the #Bears somehow end up losing this game, it's completely on Lovie "Todd is our quarterback" Smith.

This was a tweet that I made early in the second half, after Lovie's constant stubbornness that we've come to know and despise. How "Mr. Accountability" chose to keep old man Collins in the game to throw his third, and then his fourth interception, is something that I will never understand.

However, our running game came to play (golf clap for Forte) and we've started our "second quarter of the season" with a 23-6 win. We're now 4-1, and have the Seahawks heading our way next weekend.

Jump with me to see some quick stats from todays game.

Nice job Bears.

Skins are getting close to GB territory.

I Cant Figure This Team Out

One week our O line can’t block, the next week we amass plenty of run yards (247). We win games we should lose. Will this season get weirder?

3 Words - TODD COLLINS SUCKS!!!

Were it not for the complete domination of our D and the utter ineptitude of Carolina’s O, we would have been in real trouble in this game.

Our offensive attack is still anemic, and our OL still is ridiculously overmatched against most NFL teams. Fortunately this week we got to play the Kittens.

I was one of those who said starting Collins was a good decision – I was wrong.

Passer Rating 6.3??
More INTs and Sacks than completions over 3 quarters??

Cut this guy now and bring in ANYBODY else, Dane you’re still available right?

If you don't ask, you don't get. So get on with it already.

by Suffering from Chicago Sports on Oct 10, 2010 3:54 PM CDT reply actions

I was with you on the Collins decision and I still think it was the right move under the circumstances....

however, I do think they stuck with him too long. My other concern from today’s game was our defense. Before everyone jumps down my throat, think back to the first drive of the Panthers, they drove the ball right down our throats as easily as we did to them. Typical of a Lovie coached team not coming out ready to play. If it wasn’t for the fact that Carolina’s QB’s are nearly as bad as Collins, the Panthers might have beat us.

Peppers is an animal and it was nice to see Izzy come up big, although I still would have liked to have seen more of Wooten. I also watched Aromashadu when he was in and, aside from the play where he fell down, he looked like he was really making an effort to improve his blocking. That’s a good thing because I still think we’re going to need his size and speed as the season goes on so I’d like to see him stay off of the inactive list going forward.

by BearFan611 on Oct 10, 2010 4:04 PM CDT up reply actions

I kept daydreaming WWJD?

If Cutler was in this game would have been a huge blowout. Our receivers were wide-open and Collins still couldn’t connect. Not even close.

I’m going to send my resume to Lovie. I think a 37 year old chemist could do alot for this team as backup QB. Plus, I just want the free gear.

Bear Down!

Jake is right, we did have a band powerful enough to turn goat piss into gasoline.

I was screaming at my TV

for Lovie to bench Collins at the half, and lookee here – he stays until late in the 3rd throwing another pick. Hanie has had more experience with Martz’s offense than Collins and is way more mobile (Collins was a scared, frozen statue out there).

If Cutler’s not good to go next week, we’d better see #12 out there. Way to spend that $1 million, Jerry!

I don't see any reason to keep Todd Collins on the roster.

The decision to cut LeFevour seems pretty moronic now.

Pat Riley is the devil.

by Poloplaya14 on Oct 10, 2010 4:36 PM CDT reply actions

With the potential for Jay to go down again...

and the inability to keep either backup upright, I doubt the Bears will cut Collins and run 2 QBs the rest of the season. After the season, he clearly won’t be back.

LeFevour was a developmental guy. He wasn’t going to come in and win us anything this year, but Collins has a track record of being the reliable guy you want under center. Those three years without play time clearly don’t go in his favor.

He’s washed up and he’ll be done in the leauge after the year, I’d imagine, but Dan LeFevour wouldn’t have done anything else better, he’d have just cost less.

I agree

Collins makes me puke. I didn’t think LeFevour was worth a roster spot headed into the season. I was ready to roll with 2 QBs until Hanie got hurt.

With the line we have, the Qb would need to be mobile, but LeFevour is no Mike Vick.

by Virto on Oct 10, 2010 4:58 PM CDT up reply actions

No LeFevour might not have done anything better

But he can’t be any worse. And unlike Collins, he’s on the upside of his career. After watching Collins the last two weeks, you gotta believe that there’s somebody out there who can do a better job, no?

Pat Riley is the devil.

Gb doesn't have the defensive play right now

to take losing Rodgers for more than a week, and even with him, they’ve been playing close games.

The Bears were probably better equipped to handle losing a star QB because we could fall back on the defense. If Rodgers misses a few weeks, the Pack will be essentially screwed.

That said, for Rodger’s sake, I hope they don’t rush him back. Too dangerous.

by Virto on Oct 10, 2010 5:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Packer defense was decent today.

The problem was their offense — even with Matthews out. Rodgers was bad today. It didn’t help that he was always running away from Washington defenders.

My favorite part

of that game was from 2 minutes in until the end it was pretty much garbage time for the Bears. That doesn’t excuse Collins’ horrible passing but I think it was pretty well telegraphed that without No. 6 in there, we weren’t going to be mounting an aerial assault today anyway. What few passes he attempted were terrible but that was expected. Instead, we played just well enough to win against a team that would lose to the ’85 Bears… if they were out there in their current shapes today.

Yes it was a win. A throwaway win but a win nonetheless. Next week should hopefully see the return of Cutler and then we can find out if this “revamped O line” of ours is any good. I’m hopeful. I’m also naive and a bit retarded so who knows. But good game overall, Carolina never had a solitary hope of getting into it and it was fun seeing the defense manhandle them at will.

By the by, I haven’t paid attention to the Packers since Fav-ruh left but reading their fanboards… are their faithful usually this whiny? Every loss is because of the refs and because the Packers lost, not the other team beating them. With 2 in the L column thus far I have to imagine that pithy nonsense has to wear thin eventually… right?

by emdub on Oct 10, 2010 5:49 PM CDT reply actions

There are one or two that come over here and are reasonable, intelligent folks

but there are millions of retards behind the scenes. They assume that the refs are given a bonus for throwing a certain number of flags per game or something.

Not like your team has no discipline or anything, that would make sense.

by Virto on Oct 10, 2010 6:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Re: Whiny Packers Fans

One of my buddies is a Pack fan. I wrote him towards the end of the game and he responded: “Dude, the game’s fucking fixed man. The refs beat us.” I laughed, then he went for the injury excuse saying Burnett, Barnett, Grant, Bigby, Harris etc. were all out. Injuries happen, as Bears fans have grown accustomed to the last few years. But blaming the refs and claiming the game was fixed is bull shit. 40 penalties for 317 yards the last three games pretty much shows how undisciplined the team really is. SB contenders my ass.

Can people stop calling this an "ugly win", please!

The Bears played exactly the type of football that we were all hoping they would play and they had a dominating win, what is ugly about it? Defense was awesome, run game was great and the offensive line played well. Collins is horrendous but who cares? He will not get the nod at #2 QB for the rest of the season and Jay should be back next week. I wouldn’t of cared if the Bears won 9-6, a win is a win when you don’t have your starting QB. Big props to Tinoisamoa and Idonije today. Great win.

outside of the 2 Forte runs? Collins wasn’t even Grossman style fail…it was J Quinn awful. There is a reason the Panthers are an 0-5 team. As I have said elsewhere, it’s better to play badly and win than play well and lose any day, but today’s game was not even pretty’s homely cousin after 5 beers!

by LostInSTL on Oct 10, 2010 8:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Today's game didn't need to be pretty or flashy on offense.

We needed to get a win; end of story. This game in no way reflects what our offense looks like with Jay under center so it doesn’t need to look like it. Great way to get the running game going and the win makes it pretty. Down right beautiful in my opinion.

by PolishSausage.Ditka.Bears. on Oct 10, 2010 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I just said...

it wasn’t pretty, calm down. Semantics are important in the sense that effective is not a synonym of pretty nor an antonym of ugly. The Bears did need to establish the run game and get a win without their starting QB. They did so. It was not a well played game by the offense overall, just effective. Going forward, the Bears will need to improve on their offense to be more than just effective. Cutler will have to get better protection and make better decisions. The o-line and TEs will have to block well in the running and passing game. The WRs will have to improve their play. The RBs will have to find the running lanes consistently. The coaches will have to put the players in the correct places and game plan into effect. It’s a stark sense of reality that “ugly” wins turn into “ugly” losses if the “ugly” isn’t acknowledged and addressed.

collins is spitting image of jonathan quinn

except quinn was taller but they were both MOTHERF##KING HORRIBLE. i hope he never ever gets on the field again this year or any year in a bears uniform. best decision in the game (and most obvious) was to put #12 in there like i had wanted since last week.

izzy was better than usual today and well peppers is simply amazing to watch.

by reefermadness3 on Oct 10, 2010 6:18 PM CDT reply actions

Izzy racked up 3 sacks today.

I’d definitely agree that’s better than his usual.

haha

yeah, slightly.

also enjoy watching the resurgence of #23 on punt returns. despite the flaws we all see, this is the most fun i have had watching this team in about 4 years or so.

He definitely has "IT" back.

The team seems to be playing with more passion this year and it shows. Don’t know why that is but it has been more fun to watch than the last couple of seasons. Hopefully we can keep the passion up and stay healthy.

About the Fun factor...

it is sometimes overlooked. Fun football the bears have brought recently:

#Devin Hester returning punts/causing opponents to avoid long punts
#Urlacher causing turnovers
#Peppers killing people
#Gould being gold

It’s all good…

I need a new signature.

by juperee on Oct 10, 2010 6:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Reality check.

Peppers and Urlacher and Briggs have given us something to cheer, but …

We can have no passing game with our o-line.

We can have no running game with our o-line. That was all Forte on two runs he broke.

Our QB got hammered 17 times last week. ONe more concussion and he’s out for the season and Todd Collins is the ‘our QB’.

We do not have a polished WR corps. We do not even have a polished receiver apart from Shabba on the outside, but he ain’t getting a game on the outside.

by Wally&Mac on Oct 11, 2010 2:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Moot Argument

Passing game-102.2 passer rating,66.6 completion precentage
Running game- “Two runs Forte broke” Isn’t that the point of running the ball?Breaking long runs off when you can?

Bad teams have bad records at this point, however the Bears are 4-1.

You're being very Un-Dude right now.

by IslandBoodler87 on Oct 11, 2010 7:09 AM CDT up reply actions

And on top of that...

Forte and Taylor looked pretty sharp on more than just two runs today. Those two only accounted for 86 of Forte’s 166 total rushing yards. Remove those and he still had 80 yards on 20 carries (4.0 avg) against a team that knew we were going to run the ball.

Aw

Thanks, juperee. :-)

I needed to take a break from the game thread. Hyperbole is fine, its a game thread. But some perspective on the fact that football is NOT the end of the world is needed. I obviously have no issues with swearing, but people being needlessly nasty isn’t something I’d tolerate well.

Its an online sports bar, I just needed out of the meathead section. And since they’d taken over, I left.

Lighten up a little bit.

If you were at a game and people were shouting things “needlessly nasty” you wouldn’t leave would you? If there weren’t “meathead” Bears fans then our stadium and fan-base would be full of dullards. Bears football easily becomes the end of the world at times, that’s what separates the die-hards from the fair-weathers. Just ignore it and move along.

by PolishSausage.Ditka.Bears. on Oct 11, 2010 5:40 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn't lecture and rail

I moved. If I’m at a game and the guy behind me is yelling loudly about how he’d like to brain Lovie Smith with a baseball bat? Or how he’d like to see Collins carted off the field?

Yeah. I’d move. And if being a “die hard” means that my life revolves around a team? I don’t want to be a die hard. I love the Bears, but if they’d lost on Sunday today would’ve been just as sunny and nice. Maybe the “die-hards” are the ones who need to lighten up.

Things may be tilting the Bears' way...

Green Bay might end up having to shop the bargain bins even more than we have. If the Vikings don’t put up a good show tomorrow night, they’re basically done.

There’s a possibility that the Bears will never give up the current lead in the north…lots of football left to play.

no trip ups

Those next three games are all very, very winnable. And yes, things get significantly tougher after the Buffalo game. Basically, 7 of the last 8 games are going to be quite tough (with Detroit in week 13 the only real respite). We need to take advantage of the soft part of our schedule now.

he is not a very good coach and not a particularly high caliber human being either. Way too many examples of out of bounds behavior just this season alone.

Singletary sucks as a coach.

Sorry. Loved the dude as our Mike, but man, does he blow at coaching (see loss to Minny last year as prime example) and persisting with Alex Smith for so long. The guy maybe has Matt Moore who’s worse than him in the NFL. Alex Smith should have been airlocked a long time ago. But how many coaches would be 0-5 with the Niners roster. Nothing but 1st and 2nd round picks on the o-line. Good backs, receivers, TE, defense. 0-5??

Yeah, I wish we were in Seattle next week. Those are the only Bears games I can get to.

Now you see the stats and wonderful 6.3 rtg and want to cut Collins, but doesn’t looking at his profile picture make you want to kick his ass even more. I mean look at this guy. Tell me if you saw him in a bar you wouldn’t just kick the shift out of him.

Then of course start thinking about digging the hole when you realize what this guy did today. Go back Home!!

Still have big questions about this team..

But the defense is looking very solid. The offiensive line has still not shown that they can function with a Martz passing game. A good QB/WR combo still beats us if they get decent pass protection. I’m not sold on this team yet, because I have yet to see a game where they put it all together. But there is exciting potential, if a small miracle happens with the offiensive line. Consdier that if the Bears go 6-5 the rest of the year, they’re probably in the playoffs – three of those games are against Buffalo, Seattle, and Detroit. That said, I think it’s going to be a close call.

but

if they “put it all together” they will with out a doubt be the most dangerous team in the nfc. take the passing game of the dallas game and combine that with the run game of the panthers game and the defense of all the games and we can take on anyone.

The paper thin roster is not Lovie's fault. Angelo is a cancer at the heart of our problems.

Can’t blame the man for everything. Andy NFL team needs a QB to step in at a moments notice and not be terrible. We need to make a move for either Sage Rosenfels or Tyler Thigpen, guys who could do a job for you for the rest of the season if needs be.

Luckily for us the Packers have been decimated by injuries and face the Dolphins next week. We’ll be two up as long as Cutler is there to lead us past the Hawks. But with our line the Giants nightmare could happen again and we need a decent QB.

No decent backups. Dodgy O-line. odgy receivers. It’s all on Angelo.
