The "What If" Game
With Todd "is our quarterback" Collins having a miserable game against the Panthers, there's a chance that he may find himself out of a job sometime this week. If that were to happen, would you feel comfortable picking up any of these players to fill our third, possibly even second string position?
Patrick Ramsey - A 1st round draft pick by the Redskins in 2002, the 31 year old Ramsey has now played for six NFL teams. Last seen in New Orleans, Ramsey is currently a free agent and looking for work.
Josh McCown - Prior to the season, many (including myself) believed that Josh McCown was the most logical choice as a backup for the Bears. McCown has an NFL career 71.6 QB rating and has played in the Martzfense when he was in Detroit. He's also played for the Panthers, which as we've come to know, almost makes him a lock.
Jeff Garcia - The 40 year old Garcia has played for seven NFL teams, and has seen success at the games highest level. He's currently one of the signature players in the UFL, and might be next to impossible to lure away.
Chris Simms - After being released by the Broncos at the end of last season, Simms signed on for a second stint with the Titans earlier this year. In July, Simms was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated with marijuana in New York and then was released from the Titans' roster a few months later.
JaMarcus Russell - Drafted #1 overall in the 2007 NFL draft, Russell has been a huge disappointment. Russell has a career 65.2 passer rating, and has an 18-23 TD/Interception ratio. On top of his struggles on the field, he's also had his fair share of issues off the field. In July, JaMarcus was arrested for being in possession of codeine syrup without a valid prescription.
Other - Explain in the comments.

How the cat and your dog?
If you can't laugh at yourself you must not be very funny.
I remain a pessimistically hopeful Bears fan.
As a recent UofI grad...
I would hate to see Juice on our team (as a QB). He lacks the decision making ability and QB smarts to make it in the NFL. Heck, he didn’t even last at the college level. However, he is a great athlete and I always thought he should convert to DB or WR.

Agreed
without Mendenhall in the backfield, Juice wasn’t nearly as effective

We could have signed Drew Stanton this past offseason...
…but he’s likely to be available again in 3 months, considering Hill has solidified himself as the #2 behind Stafford.
I like Stanton, and the Bears obviously aren’t happy with Hanie, considering they drafted LeFevour and put Collins above Hanie on the depth chart. But, I don’t think the Bears will bring anyone else in until the season is over.
Then again, I ain’t no doctor, so who knows what the prognosis for Cutler is. And considering how atrocious our OL is, there’s no way we don’t keep 3 QBs on the roster.
Drew Stanton
might not be terrible, but he’s been bad when he’s actually played and I see no reason to think he is actually better than Hanie.
I do not think it is clear that the Bears as an organization are not happy with Hanie, I think it is Martz that is not happy with Hanie. I am guessing that Hanie shows a poor grasp of the offense and poor decisionmaking in practice, and Martz wanted a veteran “system” guy like Collins. Either way, I would not be surprised if Lovie and Jerry are absolutely fine with Hanie.
LeFevour was clearly a value pick in a late round and has no bearing on Hanie’s position with the team, since the only reason they would have drafted LeFevour this year is that 1) They did not have a backup like Collins at the time, and 2) they figured it was possible he might perform well enough to be a 3rd quarterback/practice squad guy behind Hanie, who was clearly the #2 at the time of the draft.
I've just always been a fan of Drew Stanton.
He hasn’t really shown a lot in his NFL career, but we’re also talking about a backup (and sometimes 3rd string) QB.
As for Hanie, we can all speculate on why he was stuck at #3, and why the team took a flyer on LeFevour… but if you are correct in thinking that it is Martz and not Lovie/JA who doesn’t like Hanie… well, Martz is the one opinion on the offense that matters.
how about Drew Bledsoe

Leinhert is also available...
I always like him…I thought that he was never “coached up” properly…Maybe Mad Mike could be a career saver for Leinhert…he really couldn’t do any worse than Collins and he wouldn’t cost us anything to get him!!!

Leinart would fit better in a West Coast offense though.
Don’t know how he would be in the Martz offense.

I completely unagree about Matt Leinart in a WC offense.
In college? Sure. But as an NFL QB, the only way Leinart would have success in a WC offense would be because the only thing he knows how to do is check down to dump off passes. But the successful NFL WC QB has to be able to do more than check down.
WC might be his only chance at this point
It relies heavily on its receivers to make plays after the catch. He certainly would have an uphill battle in a system, like Martz’s scheme, that relies on timng and a strong arm.

I believe that he ran more of a West Coast Offense in 06 and he had a decent year back then.

Leinart
played about average for a rookie, if I remember correctly, and got a raw deal after the Cards/Bears, but it’s always the qb who gets punished, even though his offense put up 23 pts on Chicago’s D.

Garcia is proven that he can still play despite his age
But he is under contract, so getting him out of it might be a bit expensive.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
Wasn't there a comment recently that Garcia wasn't a guy Martz liked for his system in the past?
I’m not 100% sure, but I think McCown is the only guy on the list with any experience in this offense. If that is the case, I would think that anyone else would be a huge project at this point in the season.
Unless he's changed his tune
he typically won’t sign unless he has a chance at the starting job.

Really wish we had made an offer to Bulger during the off-season but oh well.
Out of who’s left right now, I’d probably have to choose McCown just b/c he has played in the system.
WILDCARD BITCHES!!! YEEEEHHHAAAAA!!!!!
Idk what happened with Bulger...
At first, all the reports said he wanted to go to a team where he can start, then all of a sudden just goes to the Ravens behind Flacco. The Bears were never mentioned to have reached, nor did he even show the slightest glimpse of enthusiasm at the possible opportunity to work under Martz again…

hmmm well outta those to choose from...
I’d go w/ either McCown or Garcia:
McCown because he’s played in Martz’s system, but I don’t know if thats a good thing or not since Todd Collins played in the system and we all see how he “excelled” last game….
Garcia because he’s probably still the best outta the group, even though he’s ancient. Also, he’s pretty mobile, which might be a good idea since the Bears O-line isnt the greatest….
Misconception
Collins never played in Martz’s system. He played in Vermeil’s system… which is similar, like A and B are both letters.
Five foot three seems to thrive on his misery...

I would definitely agree with McCown or Garcia
if it came down to this list.
I don’t think Garcia would leave what he has right now to be a backup QB, however, so he’s probably out of the question.
So, if I were to choose it would probably be McCown since he’s been in the system before.

Reading JaMarcus Russell
Made me throw up a little.
For what ever this is worth
On 26 Sept 2010, ESPN.com reported that Russell has begun to work out with former NBA standout and head coach John Lucas, and is also consulting with him as a ‘life coach’. Lucas is noted to have been through his own drug issues while a professional athlete, as well as counseled others in similar situations after he retired as a player. It is thought that the relationship is Russell’s first publicly-known step towards a goal of re-signing with some NFL team in the future. wiki

Why don't we go see
if Akili Smith is available? (Last seen being cut behind Henry Burris in the CFL)
I say sign JaM Russelll...
to play O-line. He was pushing 300lbs. when he was cut! He’s just the athletic guy the Bears love to sign and move to another position!
IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO TRADE TOMMIE!...
That we're even having this discussion is just ridiculous.
If Jerry was any good at his job at all, and built an offensive line that was capable of blocking, we wouldn’t be looking for a quality backup.
But the O line has shown to be a major liability, and so not only is JA on the hook for a weak offensive line, but for having an incapable backup QB as well. And now it feels like he wants a do-over. It’s like we’re playing Madden in Franchise mode.
It just never seems to stop with these jokers. And now here we are, un freaking believably 4-1 sitting atop the division with one heck of a cupcake schedule coming up and thus, a real shot to make the playoffs, which means JA and Lovie will more than likely get to keep their jobs, which means next year, when we play a harder schedule, we won’t make the playoffs and that off-season we’ll hear about management needing to produce results and make the playoffs in order to keep their jobs.
All the while, we’ve got fans with broken hearts and once in a lifetime players like Urlacher, Briggs, and Hester suffering the demise of having been selected to play for a team with a coach who can’t coach and a GM who can’t bring in the help the team needs to win a championship.
And with the parody we have this year, it’s practically criminal; negligence that the O line wasn’t properly addressed this past off-season. I think we all predicted this.

Warner walked away from a pretty decent contract in Arizona. If you really think we would have ponied up the money to bring him here, then have him serve as a backup…..

I don't think they're going to drop Collins.
That’s just my opinion.
If they were going to though, i’d suggest McCown. I remember at the beginning of the season, our hopes and dreams are pinned on Cutler, If he’s out, all we can do is pray that the backup qb knows how to feed the ball to Forte.

I doubt anyone will come until the end of the season
And I certainly hope that we don’t have to worry about backup QB’s as the season progresses. It’s interesting why the Bears haven’t had great confidence in Hanie, because he’s always played very respectably ever since he joined the team during the 2008 Grossman-Orton preseason debacle.
"Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win."
Hanie is our #2, almost regardless of what he does this weekend.
As our #3, I’d like Collins out and Garcia in, but I know that isn’t going to happen.

How about none?
All those bums aren’t upgrades from Collins, so what’s the point? Like he said, it was by far his worst game in 20 starts in his career. Leave him be, and let him hold a clipboard for Jay and/or Caleb.

pass.
We saw his relief duty in the Giants game. He was the QB with, arguably, the most time and was throwing floaters out there.
“Worse start in 20 games”
He’s 38 years old, and he’s thrown less than 4,600 total yards in the NFL and has a 24/22 TD-Int ratio. That’s definitely a stat line that instills confidence.

You guys are nuts- Todd Collins has a guaranteed contract so he will stay on as the QB in any event.
Really guys, Russell over Simms?
I’m a tad disappointed by the consensus. I kind of like the guy. I followed the bucs for a couple of games (I live in California, so not every Sunday consists of Bears football on TV) and thought he did a pretty good job at QB the year he led them to the playoffs at 11-5 and they lost because of Edell Shepherd’s dropped, wide open, through his hands, endzone pass. He ruptured his spleen the year after and never started again. I don’t think he’s proven he can’t be a good football player, or that he isn’t one. He just hasn’t had many opportunities after his injury.
