Hard to fault Martz for not wanting to give Forte the ball when he's rushed for all of of....

11 yards on 8 carries. I’d like to see more rushing, but it would need to be more successful rushing, which hasn’t happened.

Biggest problem?

Horrible rushing. Seattle was able to rush for the pass the whole game because the Bears couldn’t move the ball on the ground. I know some will claim that it was because we didn’t rush enough, but I cannot blame Martz for not wanting to push the rushing issue when Forte and the line managed all of 11 yards on 8 rushes against what was effectively a constant pass rush. The only time the Seahawks protected against the run was on the 4th down play and that ended up in a 24 yard run by Taylor.

The best fix for our horrid pass protection is to fix the run. Teams aren’t even defending against it now, and the Bears still can’t move the ball.

Not going to happen this year......

But something has to be done about the rushing. Lynch and Forsett were getting hit behind the line of scrimmage frequently, and still gutted out yards and made people miss. Forte and Taylor did not accomplish that except on Forte’s TD run and the 4th down run by Taylor.

I hate it when they just take a knee and let the clock run out.

One thing I like about arena football is this rule:

During the final minute of the fourth quarter, the clock stops if the offensive team has the lead and fails to advance the ball past the line of scrimmage. This prevents the offensive team from merely kneeling down or running other plays that are designed solely to exhaust the remaining time rather than to advance the ball downfield, as often occurs in outdoor football.

Can the NFL adopt that?

Chicago's scoring offense was second in the league.

behind only Indy. While the offense had a few bad games, it also had a lot of very good ones.

Again, second in scoring offense

24 passing TDs, 14 Rushing TDs and 36 FGs, along with 38 extra points for a total of 374 of the 427 points.

Saying this offense wasn’t any good, or didn’t produce, and that the Defense carried the offense is just inaccurate and untrue.

You are.

The team played well despite Ron “The Douche” Turner’s horrid playcalling. And 374 offensive points is considered a good year anywhere. The reason it only lasted one year was because the line was aging when it was built, and Thomas Jones was sent packing. Not to mention the decision to rotate QBs for the next few years. 2006 was a good scoring offense by any standards.

My memory might be tricking me a bit...

But in 2006, as I’m flipping through the PFR box scores, the only game that I can really remember where our defense and ST literally had to carry us into the locker room victorious was this ‘un vs ARZ. Every other game, they just had to play well enough for us to outplay Bad Rex. Honestly, I’d say that even just the threat of Rex being able to throw deep was enough for our offense, especially with our run game at the time.

For as Jekyll and Hyde as Rex was, given his first few games that year, we did need him.

by Steven Schweickert on Oct 17, 2010 9:59 PM CDT up reply actions

I maintain that I'm not

“changing history”. That team was overrated and that window closed before it was all the way open between Lovie’s outdated system (which unless you have the exact right pieces, an offense that keeps them off the field, and a good matchup) and Turner’s predictablity on offense that team wasn’t as special as Chicago would like it to be remembered.

They had a good year, but theres a reason that year stands out in the Lovie Era: everything feel in place by luck. Healthy and Good Rex (at least for the first 6 weeks) with a opportunitistic defense? Great. They had a good solid season, but if this team were run properly that wouldn’t stick out the way it does.

Part of it is the fact that that SB has me still severly pissed. I was a lone Bears fan surrounded by Colts fans (only one of whom knew anyone other than Manning). But the rest is the fact that that team for all its success is the root of a LOT of problems on this current roster. Thats the year that got us stuck with Lovie (because you can’t fire a coach even if he isn’t very good after a SB appearance) got Harris & TIllman paid. Got Chris Harris traded (b/c we had so much “depth”). Was the beginning of the severe Danneal Manning Disease. And created this era’s false reputation as a “great” defense.

So yeah, you can cite stats. I enjoyed that season at the time, but I do NOT remember it fondly.

Nobody who ever gave his best regretted it. -George Halas

by Allie on Oct 18, 2010 1:10 AM CDT up reply actions

Some of what you say here rings true, but....

I have a few bones to pick….

First, Chris Harris was traded because Lovie wanted Adam Archulleta, not because we had so much depth. And DMS started in 2008. Manning played FS til that point.

Second, There wasn’t a false “great” defense. It was a great defense. The Super Bowl didn’t change that. Lovie Smith did by letting Ron Rivera go because Rivera go so he could insert sock puppet number one at DC. The defense hasn’t been right since. Cover two is run successfully all around the league still. It wasn’t about Lovie’s system in 2005 and 6. It was about Rivera’s implementation of that system.

Third. Why is it that whenever someone is losing an argument, they always say things like “so yeah, you can site stats”? The only stats I cited (see, I can play pointless games to. Did it make my argument more credible?) were the ones that you were entirely wrong about. 374 points and #2 scoring offense. These things actually happened. They aren’t debatable. They simply are. I could understand the argument if they were subjective stats that didn’t reflect the conversation accurately, but your position was that the Offense in ‘06 wasn’t that good, and that just wasn’t the case. They moved the ball and they scored, and they did it better than every team in the league except Indianapolis.

And finally, the SB season had little to nothing to do with the aged decline of Charles Tillman (and his inability to stay upright on Chicago’s turf, wtf?), nor does it have anything to do with the injury prone lethargy that is Tommie Harris. In fact, I would instead forward the argument that it’s another indictment of Angelo that these two highly paid players (especially Tommie) are still on the roster. Any other GM would have ditched Harris to free up money. If anything, I’d think the high salary would have greased the wheels of Tommie’s vehicle of exit. Somehow it has not.

Now on to the other side of the argument. You are absolutely right in mismanagement of a very talented team. You are absolutely right on that season getting an extension for Lovie that has him still at the helm. And I get the whole surrounded by Indy fans (I live in Indiana) thing, as well. And one more thing I completely agree with the your analysis of Ron “The Douche” Turner. The mistake so nice that Chicago made it twice.

My point is, though, that I won’t try and change history just because Smith, Turner and Angelo were to stupid to correctly navigate the ship after the SB. ’06 consisted of a great defense and a very good offense, in spite of Turner and Smith.
