Official Post Game Open Thread!

What can you say but ouch!  3rd down was certainly unkind and the offense was fairly offensive.  Forte looked decent early on so we stopped running.  Frank Omiyale was not on the same field as the rest of the team.  Matt Hasselbeck had a season best 242 yards.  Jay Cutler was sacked 6 times.  Devin Hester was pretty nice at the end, and if you missed the Bennett block (Link)..... boy-howdy!  Anyway, that's all I have.  Unleash the hounds!

Disappointing

to say the least. Terrible 3rd down performance, an over-reliance on the pass and plenty of missed tackles.

Don’t think having Briggs back would have made much difference in the end, but Jay is on the fast-track to concussion 2 (or 6, depending on who you believe). He’s going to die out there, if this keeps up.

Most pathetic joke

of an offensive line in the history of football. What other job on earth could you perform so poorly and still be allowed to continue working? Especially considering what these guys are getting paid. What a complete and total waste of money. There is no reason to have lost a game to the Seattle Seahawks. This was the Bears chance to pull away in the division. Green Bay loses and this is the performance the Bears put in? Horrific in every way.

As far as Jay Cutler goes, Denver definitely got the better end of that deal. At this point I’m convinced that he has no idea how to read a blitz. Everyone in America sees it coming, except him.

I just hope they lose out and get rid of the failure that is Lovie Smith. Complete regimen change needs to happen now. Soft zone doesn’t work and I’m sick of seeing Charles “I’ve made my career by forcing a few fumbles” Tillman get burned. Pathetic effort and towards the end they didn’t even look like they were trying. That’s coaching.

As for us

I did not see our DBs getting 5 sacks and Curry getting another sack on Cutler.

by SSreporters on Oct 17, 2010 4:47 PM CDT up reply actions

To be fair, he almost didn't.

Came off the line untouched, still whiffed the first time and fell to the floor, and only collected the sack because Cutler stepped forward and got muddled in traffic.

Doesn’t seem like he’s taking to his new role as a pass-rusher, either:

Indeed.

But Herring was a 5th round pick and a converted safety, as opposed to a 4th overall pick who hasn’t validated his draft position at all. Herring being a contributor at all beat the odds for the average 5th rounder.

Should have drafted Sanchez.

Very much heated emotion.

Been a Bears fan my whole life. Born the year AFTER they won the Super Bowl. All I’ve ever seen is losing seasons and coming up short when they finally get to the postseason.

Honestly though, Cutler has a ton of shortcomings that we are seeing every week. They don’t change and in fact, seem to get worse. Orton has only gotten better. A lot of that could be the system and the coaching. It probably is. I’m not a fan of the Bears coaching staff. Lovie is not going to get us anywhere.

Hmm

I might be all complained out.

I do wonder though how close this game is to being the “real Bears”. Played close (somehow) and just didn’t have enough difference makers in the right spots to make a difference. And over reliance on a play and unwillingness to adjust.

I think we were more lucky to win the first few games and this is more what the reality is. I guess we’ll just have to see though.

My quick thoughts...

1. Neither Tillman or Bowman are “cover” corners.
2. J Webb isn’t very good at RT; which I had fears about
3. Martz called an awful game; they passed to early and too often which I hoped wouldn’t be the case.
4. Tice cannot mine gold from this shit!
5. Knox did not have his head in this game.
6. Bennett played pretty well, but that 3rd down catch would have been a 1st down if he rolled forward and not backward out of bounds!
7. This is by far the most disorganized team in Bears history; looking at you Lovie!
8. Manu is a terrible blocker; Olsen isn’t much better-maybe keep in Taylor and Bennett to block and send the TEs into the pattern!
9. Why the fu(& does Martz insist that the shotgun and anything less than a 7 step drop is a bad idea when your line and TEs cannot block?
10. Can Cutler get into a rhythm and keep his focus; he gives up on too many plays-guess that might have something to do with the blocking!

take 3-4 yards and move on. We don’t need 22 on every play.

just that his head wasn’t in the game. He still fails to go after the quick slant with any authority and he makes a ton of mistakes in his route adjustments. You are correct, he’s a pro-bowl talent in the making, but he still makes enough mental errors that keep him from being great.

Yeah.

To be honest, Ruskell being pressured into quitting his job was the catalyst for all the improvement Seattle has shown this season. Mike Williams, Marshawn Lynch, Earl Thomas, Kentwan Balmer, and several other key contributors in yesterday’s game were the type of players Ruskell would never think of touching.

If the Bears don’t make the playoffs, hopefully Lovie, Martz, Angelo, and Ruskell are all purged in one fell-swoop and replaced by fresh new blood that can be more demonstrably competent.

I believe Ruskell was signed to a 2-year contract and didn’t have anything to do with the draft just gone, so I can’t see him being fired so soon. I fully expect the jokers who run the team to be in place next season, alas.

Martz hasn't learned anything in his year off.

Still gives up on the run. That’s part of why his QBs always get killed. Opposing D-linemen don’t have to worry the run, so they can just pin their ears back and get to the QB. The reason he couldn’t get any other job isn’t because of “personality conflicts” as some have said. It’s because his QBs get killed.

by Dick Butka on Oct 17, 2010 4:57 PM CDT reply actions

Jerry Angelo must go.

Our atrotious O-line is primarily his fault. He didn’t do a damn thing this offseason to help shore it up, when it was clearly a big problem. As usual, he made the D-line his primary focus.

Thanks Bobby!

by GouldisGold on Oct 17, 2010 5:19 PM CDT reply actions

Yep

and the thing is – an O-line isn’t just important for plays and effectiveness, they also need to be good enough to protect a franchise QB. So this is double dumb-ass by JA to not have invested in the O-line this offseason.

Agree on Angelo's neglect of the O-Line

I’ve been saying it for years, just not here since I only recently discovered WCG. Honestly, I wanted Angelo gone 7 years ago. The Cutler trade was an “I didn’t know he had it in him” kind of moment for me. He hasn’t had nearly enough of them, though. If the Bears make the playoffs, my thinking will be “yeah, but this means Angelo is going to be here for a long time.” And I just don’t trust him, Too many Dan Bazuins and Michael Okwos.

Dallas

is almost as bad as the Bears.

Less than a yard to go? They’d be successful 5 times running… why get cute and throw? Dumb. Just dumb.

This game was nothing less than pathetic

Forte and Taylor did nothing
Our Oline is as bad as everyone has been talking about
Cutler got killed, completed less than 50% and looked just not with it
The Martz-fence is looking like many of us preseason foretold: get QB killed, lots of sacks and the rest of the defenses seem to have figured it out
Peppers is good but $90 million good when no one else on the line seems able to accomplish anything?
Lovie’s teams continue to play at or below level and seem to come out flat.
Marinelli, while the D has looked ok, is nothing more than a Lovie D repeater.
Our D Haas glaring holes and we are not getting any better.
Special teams has gone down hill from the last few years.

Not giving up by any means but my expectations for this team are back to reality, which doesn’t seem too high. Luckily other teams in our division are looking not as good as their preseason hype. Hopefully the Bears can improve because we look worse as weeks pass and I can’t see GB going downhill.

Forte and Taylor can be good

If only martz would know how to utilize them properly. The few times we tried to run, it was always to the outside, which was the exact direction from which the seahawks were killing us. Running up the middle would’ve been much more successful, also given that there would’ve been more room past the LBs due to Seattle blitzing safties so often.

I keep hearing that

But a good running back will break some eventually, even with poor line play. A good back will get in on 1 yard carries on the goal line. Forte’s performance last year was “injury” related. This year he is healthy and went what 9 carries for 11 yards or something? ridiclous. Taylor is a good back-up back, always has been but he is nothing particularly special, at least not that he has shown this year.

I was wondering that

his other points seem solid, but our Special Teams have been pretty good in terms of Hester and DM’s returns. Gould is just as good as always (just that one missed today from 50 plus). Maynard hasn’t been good, I guess.

Not saying they are bad

Just no one has stepped up to replace or compete with Hester of old returns (can’t be another Hester but contibute?). Punts inside the 20 have gone down, no real studs emerging as we have seem in years past. Again not bad St just not as good as I we have been used to, maybe they spoiled me a little with stellar play in the past.

That said, ST seems to be the least of our problems.

I just don’t really see a deal getting done though. All both sides seem to be doing is preparing for a lockout. Although, you’d hope that the reports of the league losing a billion dollars during a lockout would kick that into gear… but both sides seem so far apart.

Now that I've digested this thing...

It’s not so much that we lost, it’s how we lost. The O-line and Martz stubbornness is the reason we have 2 losses.

Beware. Perspective zone…

Look, the defense playing well, Hester on his way to the Hall of Fame, Forte is healthy, Jay isn’t throwing picks and we’re 4-2 and in first place. In the beginning of the season, If anyone asked any of us if we’d take that 6 games in, we’d all would of said absolutely!

But with all of that being said, why am I so discouraged?

Yeah but it worked!

THe games we’ve won, we’ve barely won. If we don’t get our sh*t together, we are not going to stand a chance as the season unfolds.

Yeah that's it

Because when in late November when this team is 6-4 or 7-5, fighting for a playoff spot, all we’ll be thinking about is this game and who the hell was holding on the Manning KR for a TD.

Yeah but it worked!

by Dils on Oct 17, 2010 6:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Nobody held!

Forte was awful once again in pass blocking too! He let Babineaux right by him looking for I don’t know. Omi and Webb looked insanely stupid looking inside when their responsibility is covering the edges. Martz’ game plan has to change cause we were spot on on crossing routes and intermediary ones. Cutler can’t audible and that’s why he called those two TO in the second half so rapidly. If Cutler and Martz want this shit to succeed they have to come up with a set of plays that can offset the blitz and/or coverages against dead plays to at conserve TO’s. I know Seattle is a tough team to run against but after a couple of tries they gave up on it and that’s when Lovie has to come in and impose his will on the game plan. Webb is big enough to be an asset on the running game but if your not running keep Schaffer in. Again, Forte did not look good yesterday.

Pof, Pof, Pasa! Watch out for the monsters!

Well, just from my own perspective

Ignore the record for a minute: how good is this team?

Bad o-line. No commitment to or desire to become committed to a running game. No apparent adjustment against a really good down 4, Martzfense adjusts and attacks a blitz but has no answer for standard pressure. And have already given up nearly 30 sacks. Offense converts only 17% of 3rd downs while defense gives up nearly 32% conversion rate.

4 wins in 6 games is great. The overall trend does not make me feel comfortable about future success.

Nobody who ever gave his best regretted it. -George Halas

by Allie on Oct 17, 2010 6:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Just an addendum

32% is pretty good… (top 5 in the NFC) but the Bears have already given up 85 3rd down attempts. Most in the NFC.

What's that tell you?

“O” isn’t sustaining enough drives, especially when they don’t “come off the bus running”

by PaulieK14 on Oct 17, 2010 9:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Offense isn't ranked about 20 in any category.

D is second in points and 4 against the run but thats it, closer to 20 than anything else in every other category.

Just gonna enjoy the ride though, because we’ve already won 2/3 as many games as I expected coming into the year. Just wish everyone else would pump the brakes a little, even in a bad conference this team doesn’t deserve so much hype.

Allie

this is what i was explaining to you before.
the offense not sustaining any drives is killing the defense
the offense is consistently getting three and outs which gives the other team more possessions.
more offensive possession. more chances to score.

He ws able to get more pressure on Hasselbeck in the 2nd half. If only our cornerbacks had the intuition to jump those short passes…

Not good enough

and no one else on the line did anything. As I stated earlier it was a poor effort with no intensity. That is a recipe for disaster int he NFL. The talent is too close in this league and the aggressive team has a good shot at winning if they don’t turn it over, Hence today.

pathetic Oline performance will haunt us for the rest of the season

The whole league knows how bad this line is, so expect teams with mediocre D lines to blitz the shit out of us, and teams with great D lines will destroy us without the blitz. Seriously JA better make some calls around the league and bite the bullet and get some Oline help in here before the trade deadline or Cutler will NOT make it to 16 games. ugh..

Only one word can even come close to describing our O line, abysmaterribadfail. Definitely just invented a new word.

Also, why the hell don’t we toss the ball and/or run Forte outside the pocket more? Obviously our line sucks, so have him run AROUND it. Hell, have him run more period. our run game was going good at the beginning.

Quick addition..

A friend of mine had an amusing thought about our O lines composition. “It’s more like a thick fog… you’re always cautious when you see it in front of you, but you ALWAYS drive your way through… most times with minimal effort.”

Opposing Teams Now Have a Blueprint

With which to beat the Bears. All you have to do is stuff the run and take shots at Cutler. This is gonna be a long season.

We haven’t drafted any O lineman (with the exception of Chris Hamstring Williams who plain sucks) in recent memory and so we are now paying the price for it.

Didn’t the Bears get rid of Jauron and Wannestedt before their contracts were up? Im just trying to be optimistic that this will be Lovie’s last season (he can take Martz and Jerry Angelo with him too) because Ted “The Legend” Phillips did say that things must improve or else…
