The Hypocrisy of the NFL
After fining James Harrison $75,000 for "illegal" hits this past weekend, the NFL is now selling a picture of the Massaquoi shot at their online photo store. As Chris Harris pointed out in an earlier tweet, seems the league's being a bit hypocritical, don'cha think?
UPDATE: It appears the NFL has taken the photo off the site. But no worries, check out Chris' blog... he captured a screenshot.
Also, it's a slow news day, so we're not putting up a Den. If you see any interesting links out there, post them in this thread.

Slow news day...
Urlachers take
Guess I’m not the only one upset with the pussification of football.
If you can't laugh at yourself you must not be very funny.
I remain a pessimistically hopeful Bears fan.
Of course they can't stop showing clips of this hits on NFL Network.
I suppose they are “newsworthy”.

I'm all for safety.
I hope that these fines/suspensions are limited to especially flagrant hits to the head and neck that are maliciously intent. Violent hitting and intimidation is inherent to the game and I would hate to see a player “let up” before making contact for fear of drawing a penalty or worse. That can put the tackler at increased risk, IMO.
"More cowbell" - Bruce Dickinson; "More bell cow" - Lovie Smith
I hope you're right too...
But how do you definitively judge “intent”? AND I still want to know if they’ll do anything to the running back who lowers his helmet to get the extra yard? Urlacher has a good point.
If you can't laugh at yourself you must not be very funny.
I remain a pessimistically hopeful Bears fan.
It would be difficult to prove "malicious intent"
and that’s a problem with creating and effectively enforcing this rule. You would also have to define “flagrant”. It is virtually impossible to eliminate helmet to helmet contact so the rule would have to specify a “helmet as a weapon” foul. But I thought that already existed.
Good rule in concept but I wonder how they are going to determine what is legal and what is illegal.
"More cowbell" - Bruce Dickinson; "More bell cow" - Lovie Smith
That's why we have refs in the game
Hell, its the 21st century, if we needed someone to accurately spot the ball, a machine could do. Refs are in the game to provide human interpretation and discretion of the rules.

True.
And refs are prone to human error. How does a ref determine in the flash of a second the nature or the hit? Stop for replay? Harrison wasn’t flagged for either hit but he was fined. I have a problem with that.

It is virtually impossible to eliminate helmet to helmet contact
This is discussed later on in this post, but if you take away the helmets, I’m willing to bet that you won’t see nearly the same amount of hea to head hits.

Big Hits are one thing
But Helmet to Helmet there is no place for in my opinion. The Dunta Robinson hit was helmet to chest so i did not think it was that dirty, but James Harrison did make 2 blatent helmet to helmet hits and then laughed about it. I can’t stand him, he’s a dirty player.
by Chitownproduct on Oct 20, 2010 11:18 AM CDT up reply actions
Leading with the helmet should be a no-no.
Both of Harrison’s hit were overly brutal but Meriweather’s hit was inexcusable.
"More cowbell" - Bruce Dickinson; "More bell cow" - Lovie Smith
If the runner is going down already by another defender, or aren't even aware you're coming,
there should be penalties. What I don’t understand is why the NFL is fining players for hits, yet are too lazy to make concrete rules about it!

Yup.
I used turkey for my base, and nixed the burgers inside. I did use a couple pieces of turkey bacon inside and the sauteed onions and some low fat cheese. The only other difference, is I got the wifey to make a homemade sauce to go on top. It was still too unhealthy, but it was good.

is it football
At the end of the day, I think that the NFL has to decide if football is evolving in a way that will sell tickets and still be true to the traditions of the sport. I personally don’t like where the sport is headed. I’m old school. I like the football of Ditka and Butkus. As Urlacher said, injuries are part of the game and that is indeed some part of the reason that ballplayers make more money than the average person. If I had the physical ability to play pro, I would jump at the chance and screw the injuries, to tell you the truth.

I guess my two cents is...
the game though is comparatively different now than it was in butkus’ day. weight, size, speed, training, viciousness, all of these have improved over the past 75 years of the sport… yes, injuries occur, but isn’t about minimizing injury and maintaining some sense of team continuity?
these are people, not rag dolls. i agree in principle that more needs to be done to protect the players to prevent the sins of the past, but, this move though, doesn’t really do it for me… malicious intent is too much of a gray area.
Five foot three seems to thrive on his misery...
I will gladly let people give me concussions
For millions upon millions of dollars.
I just don’t get how the NFL expects these guys to adjust their bodies in mid air at full speed to avoid helmet to helmet hits. Do they really think the guys laying the big hits want to be going helmet to helmet anymore than the guy on the receiving end?
The funny thing is if massaqoui had just caught the ball he would have been upright and got clocked in the chest but he bobbled it and started to fall to the ground which made harrison’s big hit turn into something illegal, how the hell is Harrison supposed to adjust himself at full speed? Same goes for the heap hit. It was a freak hit because another pat hit his legs first which adjusted his body in mid air and went from merriweather getting him in the chest/shoulder to him unfortunately getting him facemask to facemask.
Herr Goodell is all about making conformist machines who do everything exactly the same, lost in the fray of all the big hit fines is the NFL fined Darnell dockery 5 grand because his socks were too low, what a effin joke.

I'm okay with fines for intentional helmet to helmet hits
But, “devastating hits” and the rest of this stuff? Put flags on them! The only dirty hit out of the ones that drew fines on Sunday was the Meriweather hit, the rest were all legal.

Sure it was helmet to helmet
But it was clearly not meriweathers intention. He went in looking to make a big hit and had heap lined up until another patriot hit heaps legs first causing him to spin in the air and sadly put his face right in front of meriweathers. It was unfortunate and it certainly warranted a flag but it was not malicious and certainly didn’t deserve a 50k fine.
by lopey986 on Oct 20, 2010 12:36 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
We don't know Meriweathers intention.
He, of course, denies trying to physically harm Heap. But he definitely “springs” forward and drops his head. Either way players are conditioned to hit and some drop their heads out of habit. The thing is he could have done some serious self-damage.

I think it was Peter King's MMQB Mailbag
Where someone suggested switching to Rugby rules (No tackles allowed above the shoulders) and doing so drops your team down a man for the rest of the game. For all the claims we make about football tough guys, those guys are doing it with no safety equipment. I’d be for that change.

I was just thinking this, actually (my background is rugby) – if they do away with helmets, shoulder pads and thigh pads, you won’t see these kinds of hits after a period during which players learn that you can no longer get away with it.
A case in point, before the IRB regulated how thick protective padding could be, some rugby players were taking to the field with shoulder padding which would’ve looked out of place in 80s fashion and, combined with the fad of wearing scrumcaps, were launching themselves as human missiles rather than wrapping up their opponent in tackles. This led to more concussions (a study in South Africa showed some of their top-level centres who favoured this robust style were showing the early effects of being punch drunk), which meant the IRB had to take action and not only restrict the thickness of padding but also stipulate that shoulder-charging with no attempt to wrap up was an offence.
The gist of what I’m saying is that if you give players the option to do so, they’ll turn equipment which is meant to be for personal protection into a means to hit someone else harder with less risk to oneself.

Q&A on the teams site with Angelo and Larry
LM: There’s been a lot of talk about needing more balance on offense. Do you think the Bears need to run the ball more or just run it more effectively?
JA: "Here’s what you don’t want on offense: You don’t want to be too predictable. If the defense knows when you’re going to throw or run, you make it easier on them and tougher on yourself. You can’t be predictable, and with balance you’re less predictable. It doesn’t matter if you favor a higher run-to-pass or pass-to-run ratio. That’s irrelevant to me. What is relevant is moving the chains, not committing turnovers, protecting the quarterback and getting the ball in the end zone. And the easiest way to do it is with balance. The goal is to dictate the pace of the game and make the defense defend the whole field."
Good answer JA. Now lets take it to the field.
