I haven't really trusted NFL referees since Super Bowl XL. But the whole Instant Replay Challenge system infuriates me week after week, especially since I continually try to have faith in NFL referees, yet see bad calls continue ad infinitum. Why should a coach be penalized because of one close call, when the refs are frequently wrong, only to lose future challenges on legitimate bad judgments by refs later on in the game.
I have a very simple solution - so simple, I'm surprised the NFL brain trust hasn't thought of it already. Maybe it's already been discussed by someone else here. Anyway, my idea:
Every scoring play is reviewed, and every turnover is reviewed. Automatically.
The momentum of the game has stopped anyway. There's a 97% chance they're going straight to commercial. And at least 90-95% of the challenges would only take a few seconds. Why should coaches be penalized for challenging close calls on the most important plays of the game?
Can anyone think of potential drawbacks to this tweak of the system?
