Ugly Football Quick Recap: Redskins Outlast Bears

Photo

At one point, it could have been said that neither the Chicago Bears nor the Washington Redskins wanted to take advantage of the other's mistakes.  Well, the Bears found a way to force their will upon the Redskins, by turning the ball over on back-to-back-to-back-to-back possessions in the fourth quarter.

The defense looked good, but could not overcome the mistakes of the offense.  Sound familiar Chicago fans?

Star-divide

Quick stats:

Jay Cutler: 26/ 40, 281 yds, 1 TD, 4 INTs

Forte/ Taylor: 13 carries/ 61 yds

Johnny Knox: 6 rec, 86 yds, 1 TD

Israel Idonije: 5 tackles, 1 sack, 2 pass deflections

Charles Tillman: 8 tackles

Offensive 3rd down conversions: 2/10

Turnovers: 6

Why stop there?

If Knox gets his head out of his third-point-of-contact and actually follows through on his routes, we aren’t discussing the refs. If Forte breaks away on a couple of runs, we aren’t talking about the refs. If, if, if.

21 points would be talked about, regardless.

Exactly

So many other things that Bears PLAYERS could have done that the refs don’t matter in the grand scheme of things.

by Arbusto on Oct 24, 2010 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Except that the Bears lost by 3 and just one of those calls....

not being thrown means a Bears win. I wouldn’t be complaining about refs for one mistake, and the Bears are in trouble, regardless. But this game, without truly poor officiating, is a Bears win. Period.

are you serious?

the Bears didn’t deserve to win that game – they actually gave it away. Defensively, they played well, but good god man, did you watch Cutler today? did you see the offensive line? the turnovers?! the refs didn’t lose that game for the Bears … the goddamn Bears lost the game.

by junkhorse on Oct 24, 2010 6:04 PM CDT up reply actions

False.

Anytime your defense holds the opponent to 10 points AND scores a touchdown, you should win. No exceptions.

by celerysalt on Oct 25, 2010 8:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Don't Blame the Refs.

That’s ridiculous.

Agreed that you should win with a defensive TD, but you don’t think a horrible offense can ruin that?

Remember 2005?

How can you blame the refs???

by celerysalt on Oct 25, 2010 8:03 AM CDT up reply actions

So, you didn't watch the game, then?

The Bears could definitely have dome more, and there is plenty of blame to go around. But ignoring the fact that, had the refs called the game correctly on a number of occations, the Bears would have won. Not might have, but would. Just look at the Cutler TD turned fumble, which was wrong for two reasons. 1) the ball broke the plane, which makes it a TD and the play is dead. And 2) forward progress had long been dead before the ball came out. Those 7 points alone win the game. Period.

That doesn’t exonerate the Bears Offense of it’s horrible play. Not in the least. But that is two different discussions. Did the Bears offense play horribly? Yep. But would the Bears have won if the refs had done their jobs correctly? Yes.

It’s really that simple.

???

So if the Bears had just the 7 points from the Cutler TD turned fumble, the Bears wouldn’’t have won? By what math?

It’s a simple statement of fact. It doesn’t exonerate the offense of their issues. But the point is that it’s bad enough to try to overcome a horrid offensive effort without also trying to overcome horrid officiating.

Um.

Maybe we have very different standards for what qualifies as “bad officiating”.

In a pig pile, they get those wrong all the time. Jay manages not to fumble and we get another chance, no one gives a shit about the sneak working or not.

The flag was a little late on that one (and that rule is one of the most annoying) but not any later than I’ve seen it before.

And its always ALWAYS the second guy who gets flagged on a play like that.

On the Cutler TD, they.....

showed the replay down both lines, and it is clear and easy to see down both lines. So neither of the refs saw it? and that isn’t bad officiating to you?

And while it is always the second guy, it wasn’t like the Hainesworth shot was subtle. Missing it was egregious at best.

Most delay penalties get whistled dead before the play, not after the defense has scored a TD.

by T.Moore on Oct 25, 2010 9:16 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't see it that way

1st TD attempt: Bennet didn’t quite get it in before he was down. No TD.

2nd TD attempt: Cutler clearly breaks the plane for the TD; refs call it a fumble and give it to the skins. Bears staff compounds problem by not challenging. ROBBED 7 points.

3rd TD attempt: Interception is run back in for obvious TD. Then Refs call it back for Skins delay of game. Totally sucks, but they were within the sucky rule that allows a team (Skins) to benefit from its own mistake.

Other assorted crap is imaginary penalty on Webb and other little calls and non calls. But the cutler non-TD is concrete and would have won us the game.

Refs waited til after the defensive td 2 plays later to suddenly decide to throw the delay penalty

The phrasing of that sentence confused me at first (making me think you were confused) but i know what you mean. And then you’re saying -7 Bears, where we lost the Cutler TD, then -7 bears where we lost the defensive TD, and then +7 Skins where they should have been called back for Haynesworth/Webb.

So if you do that math, it’s 21 points misery for us. But in reality, it wouldn’t have been cumulative if the refs did the right thing; the cutler TD would have prevented the defensive TD situation from occurring. But who cares? The refs sucked almost as much as both teams did.

Jupe's correct

Hangovers are caused by your brain being dehydrated. If you’ve got a heavy night of drinking planned, make sure you drink a lot of water before you hit the hay. Stay away from caffiene and salt and you’ll be better soon.

When you go to somebody's house, you don't crap on their floor. Being a fan of one team does NOT give you license to be a dick to fans of another.

Corollary: When people are visiting your house and behaving themselves, them being a fan of a different team is NOT a reason for you to piss in their beer.

I'd Get Used to it

Because I fully expect that on January 3 the Bears brass will march out and give the 4-1 start as the reason the coaching staff is returning. I know this organization well enough to know they’ll cop out and use that as an excuse to bring them back and not own up to the fact that it’s the labor dispute that really edged them to keep the staff. 1 more year of this crap.

Moore's 2nd pick

was nullified by a delay of game on WSH.

And Jay tried to sneak on the goal line but was called a fumble not a TD. DIdn’t challenge b/c they had JUST challenged the play before on a Bennent catch everyone thought was a TD but was down at the one.

See I don't think we can blame Lovie for making the first challenge

because Cutler validated Lovie having to challenge to Bennett play by fumbling the ball on the next play. If Lovvie had more confidence in his offense scoring at the goaline then maybe he doesn’t challenge the Bennett play. So when the Cutler fumble happens, Lovie was hesitant to challenge the 2nd play because he didn’t want to blow all of his challenges and it was close.

Yeah but it worked!

is if the staff in the booth didn’t make a strong and fast recommendation to challenge. We don’t know what (if anything) they told Lovie.

that was frustrating.

could they really not see the replay where cutler scored and it was ruled a fumble, which was shown multiple times on tv before the redskins next snap? dont they hire people simply to decided whether or not it would be a good idea to challenge a play? fire them.

2 plays later, refs made the right call on the delay of game (although a little late), but the bears still got hosed.

they finally started running more shorter routes, but im convinced neither knox or hester have any idea how to run a route of less than 15 yards. aromashodu and bennett need to see the ball more if they continue that trend.

when you force 6 fumbles, please recover more than one of them.

My thoughts:

  • I’m tired of Jay’s lazy throws. I’m also tired of our receivers not always fighting for the ball.
  • For whatever reason, Forte isn’t playing well enough to start. Chester has earned more touches.
  • No complaints about the defense. They tighten up as the game goes along. But Peanut is done, I’m sorry to say.
  • I like Lovie as a person and a coach. That being said, I’m ready for the Lovie era to be over.
  • I live in Vikings Country. I’m rooting for the Pack tonight.

by Jepp The Viking on Oct 24, 2010 5:01 PM CDT reply actions

yeah, you can say that

The topic comes up on and off around here.

There’s a high number of people who certainly want to see him on 3rd down situations.
There’s a lower (but still significant) number who think he should have more touches than Forte.

I’m not sure yet; since we seem to be “experimenting” this season anyway, sure, let’s see him used in some starter running roles and see how it shakes out.

Personally, I think his presence has helped Forte step his own game up a few notches, so I appreciate CT’s contributions either way.

Chester Taylor is good,

both of our running backs need more touches. Personally I would like to see their touches to be about even. If both got 10-12 a game I think they would both be pretty good and the team would be better off for it.

Delay of Game penalty needs to change

they let the play happen, it should be able to be declined…and definitely a loss of down on the goal line, minimum

Eh

It was called to the rule of the law, much like Megatron’s no catch in week 1 (which I agree was also correctly called.) I think it just sucks because it took away what would have been a game clinching pick-6 for da bears. It’s kind of an unintentional dick move by the refs.

it happened several times against GB

they delayed of game on the goaline, and kept giving rodgers 1st and goal, so it’s not just this game

I think

If the refs don’t call the play dead at the moment the time clock hits 0, then they should allow play. It’s their mistake, if they missed it then let the play ride as it was obviously pretty damn close (within tenths of seconds) anyways.

Agree.

It’s like that law that says a criminal can’t profit financially from his crime (like selling memoirs from prison, etc). As someone put it earlier, a team shouldnt be allowed to profit from their own penalty by having a play negated.

Either they should give the opponent the chance to decline, or the refs should have no chance to call the delay of game after the play is complete. Like how a coach can’t challenge after the next play has started. You snooze, you lose.

it should be like offsides

or the opposite of it. it’s a free-play for the D if the refs didn’t bother to blow the whistle. if something great happens for the D, they can decline it and the play stands

I liked the offense in the 3rd Qtr

It seemed as if the Bears where going to actually score in the 3rd Qtr; Cutler was getting good protection, the running game was working…All in all the offense was moving the ball, but when it comes to scoring, the execution is terrible. That and the turnovers…Bennet’s catch was short of the endzone, but I had this uneasy feeling about the following 1st and goal play. I’m not sure who they were playing (Either Green Bay, Seattle, or Carolina), but the very next play after the challenge of an almost TD catch, they fumbled the ball and it happened in the preseason on a 1st & Goal.
Cutler is not showing to be a clutch QB yet.

this is very depressing.

Just when you think the problems are solved on this team, more problems rear their ugly little heads. this team lacks the ability to play a complete game on both sides of the ball. AND THE COACHING STAFF, WHAT THE FUCK! When Lovie doesn’t throw challenge flags is when he should and vice versa.

I swear, this team makes me want to relive my teenage days by doing illegal things with exotic plants.

We need these last two games big time

We are at home against two teams which were good, but The Bears are a good team as well and when your at home you need to win these type of games.

2 or 1 more win would help give the bears some breathing room from minnesota and Green Bay.

3-0
1-3 since

I still believe this team can do some things, The o line came around, Martz did well, Cutler did well at times at others he did not.

I disagree with comments about Lovie

not throwing the challenge flag on the Cutler play because he threw one the play before. If the guys upstairs say it is a TD, then you need to challenge. That is a play worth points. You must challenge if you think it is close. Inexcusable of the coaching staff.

I am also disgusted with Cutler and Martz on the final interception. Why even have Knox run a deep route. You have had the short to intermediate passing game working in the 2nd half, you need to keep that working and play for the tie at home.

I put this on the coaching staff first, Cutler 2nd. But both are in need of a kick in the ass after that game.

I don't have a problem with the deep route

Martz' is proving

to be the same old stubborn person that he was in San Fran and Detroit. I think that he really just can’t not call pass plays, kinda like an addict. After a week in which Lovie comes out and say we need more balance, and Martz says that he should have called more running plays in the Seahawks debacle, what happens?

Martz call 16 running plays, including Cutler’s QB sneak,
10 to Forte for 41 yards = 4.1 yards a carry
3 to Chester Taylor for 20 yards = 6.7 yards a carry
2 to Devin Hester for 5 yards = 2.5 yards a carry
Don’t want to think about the QB sneak yet.

The point is, our running backs were doing a great job. This was a close game, there was no reason to go away from the run, and every reason to stay with it. If the Bears had stuck with the run until the Redskins had to bring eight in the box to stop it, he could have started calling his pass plays or god forbid he use some play action.

In the 2nd half of the game the O-line actually started to come together a little bit. They might have built up a little confidence had they won this game. That was ridiculous play calling.

by Fridge72 on Oct 24, 2010 6:21 PM CDT reply actions

I am ok with the offensive game plan today

Our guys failed to execute, Cutler is hearing footsteps on every play and is making bad decisions because of it. Our 2nd tier wideouts arent helping either. These kids just dont have the experience to run this complex offense. So basically we took who was a 1st tier QB and paired him with a 2nd rate wide out crew, a 3rd rate group of tight ends, and a 4th rate O line and we are all wondering why the execution isnt there, its obvious to me. Its time to simplify this offense so these morons can figure out were they are supposed to be. Martz isnt to blame, its the lousy offensive personnel plain and simple.

I'm okay with the late 2nd quarter

I just don’t understand why it takes so long to GET into that gear and why it doesn’t wanna stay in that gear. 40 passes and 13 runs in a 3 point game when quick passing/runs were working is obnoxious. But no longer suprising.

by awfullyquiet on Oct 25, 2010 12:19 AM CDT up reply actions

I think

we’re almost saying the same thing in terms of dumbing it down. While I agree that in some instances, especially the o-line, there is a lack of talent. It is still on Martz to dumb it down, as the play caller he needs to recognize what is working and go with it. That’s his job.

Establishing a run game is not an outrageous idea. Especially in Chicago, outdoor northern stadium, the run game is going to be important getting into November through January if we make it that long. If opposing teams respect our run game, the passing game will get that much easier. Plus our O-line should gel a little faster in the run game.

You speak of TE’s, I ask, why is Dez Clark not dressing for games? That is on Martz. We have four TE’s on this team, we only ever seem to get Olsen or Shamoomaleuna in the game, that’s not exactly working for us.

Sorry if this comes off as pissy, I’m still a little upset about this game. We had the talent to win this, but the Bears got brain punched today then shot themselves in the proverbial foot.

Obviously martz read my fanpost about getting the ball to olsen, but must have ignored the part about the jump ball in the red zone.

Absolutely agree,

Chester Taylor looks good when he gets the ball. Can’t understand why he isn’t getting it more. Though I don’t really understand why Forte isn’t getting it more either.

Personally I would like to see Taylor and Forte split the carries about evenly. I like Taylor better running the ball between the tackles, though Forte’s re-found speed is impressive, especially when we get him the ball in space. He doesn’t break tackles as easily as Taylor but he sure takes off on those screen passes.

Comedy of Errors

Not sure if anyone else noticed this, but NFL.com got creative with the highlight link for our game relative to all the others. The highlight link for every other completed game on the scoreboard says ‘Visiting team vs. Home team highlights". For the Redskins-Bears game it says “Comedy of Errors.” Can’t say I disagree.

On a positive note, I can think of a lot worse performances to suffer through than what we did today (see Raiders domination of Broncos).

I thought the Oline improved in the second half but Jay was awful. Just poor decisions I think caused by thinking he has to force good things to happen. Our wr coach should be fired tomorrow, these guys just do not know the nuances of playing the position. Hester still has not learned to come back to the ball. How hard is that to comprehend?? Martz's offenses always turn the ball over

at an alarming rate. They always get their QB killed. He’s had different players and position coaches over the years. The one thing that stayed the same was Martz. Are all of his QBs “interception machines”? Do they all “hold onto the ball too long”? I never liked Martz. I gave him a chance because the Bears hired him, but I never liked him. Don’t get me wrong, he’s great if he has one of the 5 best offensive lines in the NFL (which the Bears don’t have). If you need that to be successful you are not a “great offensive mind” no matter how many people say you are. Jay hasn’t shown his the accuracy we normally see from him his last couple of games. He’s still shell-shocked. To make matters worse, nobody on the offense is on the same page. Somebody needs to tell the coaches that training camp is over. Bottom line: Jay will never reach his potential unless he goes to another team or until Martz and Angelo are gone. Period. End of discussion. He was headed in the right direction in Denver until Pat Bowlen inexplicably and foolishly soured on Mike Shanahan.

This is merely us reaping what we sowed for a half-assed O.C. search in the offseason that left us with our only option – one that has proven to lead to QB sacks/hits, unbalanced pass/rush ratio, turnovers, and a high scoring… wait, where the hell’s the last one!

Great way of putting it. I don’t know if I’m just being stubborn or stupid or what, but I can’t give up on Jay Cutler. I can’t do it. Maybe it’s because I have his jersey, maybe it’s because I will never forget how absolutely ecstatic I was when I found out about the trade. But I believe he has potential and I believe that the Bears are eff-ing it up.

I hated the Martz hire at first, warmed up a bit, but now I’m over it. We definitely need to get rid of Martz, definitely need to get rid of Angelo. Lovie should probably go but if we could somehow get rid of the first 2 I could stick it out with Lovie one last time.

Oh yeah and you do point out very well

I do seem to remember a lot of “He holds the ball too long” when talking about Martz QBs after Warner. Those guys were all also turnover prone. Jay has been getting screwed by his coaches and systems I think. He is a gunslinger, he’ll throw lots of picks, I’m OK with that but he needs to be put in a better position to succeed.

WOW

after fumbling the ball, throwing 4 picks, he then says if we were playing them tomorrow he would go right back at hall??? Hummmm Does he knows its bad when your throwing to the wrong team? I agree you have to let it go after an interception but perhaps it should set in just a little bit lol. Our offensive line did look better in the second half, but Jay is unsettled and gun shy right now. He has to plant his feet, he’s constantly throwing off his back foot. Maybe if our line can start keeping off the turf he can get enough confidence to set his feet before releasing. The deep route Hall was way ahead of Johny that ball should have never been thrown. We at least showed up today for this game. The Seattle game was horiffic!

Plenty of Blame to Go Around

But a lot of it has to go to the coaches. Still an unbalanced attacked, bad challenges (again) and the Bears just got outcoached.

Some of it was on Cutler. Some of it on the receivers. A lot of it on the coaches.

The line, briefly, in the 2nd half looked like it was coming together. Maybe they can build on that (Or just completely destroy it).

This team is nowhere near perfect, or even good. Hester looked bad at WR today. Jay looked bad at QB, Knox looked bad. Just an awful, awful game.

Missing the playoffs in 2010

would be in the long-term best interests of the Bears franchise. Angelo has been there for almost a decade and I have no reason to expect him to all of a sudden figure out how to build a football team. A playoff appearance would mean he’s not going anywhere for a long time.
