Love this from Fred Mitchell
Martz and Smith had promised a more balanced attack after the Seahawks plan (47 passes and 12 rushes) blew up in the Bears’ face the previous week.
“When I talk about balance, I’m not talking about 50-50 or anything like that,” Smith said. “I’m just talking about keeping (the defense) off balance a little bit with the run, taking what they’re giving us. We did that for the most part today.”
When it came to the running game, the Bears gained 66 yards on the 16 attempts for a 4.1-yard average. Matt Forte had 41 yards on 10 carries. Chester Taylor picked up 20 yards on three attempts (6.7 average).
After he said this:
“That’s what we did, so we’re going to stay with that plan,” he said. “Sometimes the plan changes during the course of a game. We’re not happy with what happened, but not going to sit here now … it’s pretty easy in hindsight to say we wish we would have done this a little bit better. As I started off early on, I said we need to have balance, more balance, and that’s what we’ll do.”
Asked what he had in mind when he refers to balance, Smith said 50-50. We’ll see if they can achieve that starting Sunday when the Washington Redskins visit Soldier Field.

haha...oh Lovie, you're crazy!
and….there was hardley any change in balance from the Seahawks game (47 pass, 12 run) and the Redskins game (45 pass, 15 run). Maybe that’s more of a balance Lovie wants??
Change course during a game???
OH CONTRAIRE!!!
“We get off the bus running. If they figure that out then I guess we lose. This is football. Game of inches. Any given Sunday. High-motor guy. Rex is our quarterback. Take care of the football. Smashmouth. 4 quarters in the season. One game at a time. No more questions thank you for your time. I’m gonna go sit in a bathtub and eat some ice cream.”
Nearly.
Au contraire.

I rarely disagree with "Moon"
Mike Martz called 45 pass plays vs. 15 running plays in another skewed day for an offense that was showing signs it could run the ball and in a game where the Bears were never more than one score down
I didn’t see the offense play-calling as skewed. I thought Martz called a good game. Nice mix of runs, screens, 1 & 2 step drops, along with some 5 & 7 step drops… The offensive failures were more on Cutler not making good decisions and not being as accurate as he should’ve been.
HaHaHaHa!
Did you see the Bear greats on the sidelines before and during the game?
First one that Fox showed and talked about was “The Colonel” Richard Dent. Followed by Gale Sayers, Otis Wilson, Dennis McKinnon among others…
Yep! It's always good to see those past GREAT players...
Gale has to be pushing 70 and he looks like he could still play! Well, maybe Madden, but you get my point.
The offense was really really good for about 10 minutes.
The last two minutes of the half and then the first drive of the 3rd q. Thats when the short passing/running mix got going … but it didn’t last long. And they didn’t know how to adjust to CBs jumping routes.
Total fail on everyone on offense.

The Bears should have ran more...
But Cutler didn’t execute.

I know one thing
Was at the game yesterday. Beautiful day and great seats. Like many, I am starting to have real doubts about whether Jay Cutler will ever mature into an elite quarterback. I do know one thing, though — if he is going to do it in a Bears uniform, then we will need a big receiver. Cutler throws high, and he loves to throw jump balls. He is not going to stop doing this. Both Knox and Hester are decent receivers, but they are short. Jay either hasn’t figured that out, or he is makng some type of statement by intentionally throwing jump balls to tiny little guys.
The personnel packages in the red zone made no sense at all. Aroma has good hands and is long. Kellen Davis is a huge target. Maybe the draft next year. Knox and Hester are best at stretching the field. Near the goal with Cutler throwing we need big targets.
Thing is
martz likes the smaller, faster, shifter WR…..IMO I think that is why Olsen (besides also being a RE) and DA are not used as much by martz…..
IMO the problem is and will be martz…..but thats just me…..

Martz is all about going vertical
thats why he likes fast WR’s he’s not using DA that much cuz DA is just lazy won’t do whats asked of him and Olsen is a tight end not a WR his job is to block first and be there when Jay needs to dump off the ball. We ran a west coast offense under Turner for years with no luck don’t fool yourself’s into thinking we would be better off with Turner still in town. Martz system is just so much different from anything these guys have ever tried before its going to take all season for them to “start” to get it. Think about it, next year they fire Lovie the new coach brings in a guy to run a 3-4 Defense and suddenly we don’t have a top 10 D any longer at least not that first year.

It is possible to conceive a west coast-style offense here that doesn’t feature Ron Turner in any capacity.

nice post and im starting to doubt cutler as well.. ive been on the cutler bandwagon but he seems to lack fire in his play and basically lost the game!! he just seems out of it and his delusional comments after the game makes me wonder whether the " cocky punk" thing is true..
except for the defense the bears are horrible.. and with the next 3 games its not looking good..
the martz experiment looks like another lovie buddy hiring and we all know that scenario..
He just doesn't get "it"
Nor do I think he really cares about winning. I’m just going to sling it all over the place!

I can't believe you guys
Lovie is a good defensive coach, his buddy Rod is a good defensive coach.
how is our defensive doing?
Lovie doesn’t know offensive. Ron Turner was not a Lovie buddy and must have had something on the McCaskeys to get his job back after his futile attempt at being a College Head Coach.
Lovie was lucky to get Martz to come to Chicago considering he is going to be out of a job next year. It’s asking a lot of a buddy to stand in front of the firing squad with you.

How about just mature to the point of being above-average?
I question whether or not he’s even capable of that.

He made some comments about Hall not being that good.
Not sure that I completely disagree, but still odd to say after handing him an NFL record. Here’s a link.

Gotta love the management of this team.
Last year, they went out and got “prized free agent” Rod Marinelli, who was supposed to coach our talented D-Line to sacks. But, Angelo forgot something… the talent. Well, he didn’t forget it, as much as arrogantly thinking his draft picks were, you know, actually talented.
Marinelli couldn’t do squat with what we had, which led to a mid-season trade for Gaines Adams, and the eventual break the bank free agent signing of Julius Peppers.
This year, our management arrogantly went out and did the same idiotic thing on the other side of the ball. Angelo though Mike Tice would instantly fix our O-Line. Except, there’s one glaring problem: he doesn’t even have an O-Line to work with.

The O-line played very well in the second half
Cutler single-handedly lost the game on his own. He literally sucks beyond words.

Not their fault
The ball was there before Hester could make his break. Knox didn’t come back, but based on Jay’s history of not erring on the side of caution I’ll side with the WR. This isn’t something new with Jay, I saw it first hand in Denver.

that martz offense is about timing and trust by the QB and receivers ? I know I hear that 50 times a week before the season started and 20 times a week now….

Very true
but there’s still his decision-making to take into account. Yes, he throws to a spot the WR should get there. With that said, doesn’t he have to check off a well-covered WR? Everyone of Hall’s picks were the result of him being in perfect position and having blanket coverage.
"How do you know somebody is great? When you see how they respond to adversity. Anybody can man a ship when the waters are calm." - Jerry Angelo
I do agree
with that….There were times that the out let pass was probably the safer throw but refuses to throw them…..His decision making and accuracy has been bad but IMO I chalk it up to him probably thinking “oh god oh god oh god” on some of the passes….
When martz was hired I thouhgt he was a HORRIFIC fit for Cutler so to me until martz is gone this is probably what you will get…..So to me this season was a waste when Lovie was not fired…..

I have no idea what the answer is
“If we had to play them tomorrow, I’d still go after him every time.”
Here’s what Jay said just awhile ago per Brad Biggs. I guess he really hasn’t learned anything from his mistakes.

Did you now here
about how Jay and DeAngelo had a “feud” or personal challenge with each other? Hall said he knew Jay would test him by throwing his way. Gee…I wonder why he jumped all those routes? Not only did Jay fail physically, but he got whipped mentally as well. Way to put the team ahead of your personal glory!

Hall was able to take the inside on Knox all day because of Knox's inexperience
Jay should have been checking away from Knox after the first INT. Hester needs to learn how to fight for the ball. Bennett is the only reciever that really looks like he knows what he is doing out there.

I think we are getting into the meat of the crap sandwich we were served this off-season
We knew it wasn’t meat but we sampled the sides and they were good and it was presented nice.
Angelo, Lovie and the rest should have been sent packing before this year started. We retreaded an NFL outcast in Martz after no one wanted to come in under this regime. We suffered through until basically Lovie is running the D again and put a never called a play dline coach in as DC.
We got a shinny overpriced appetizer in Peppers, Taylor and Manu but forgot we didn’t have enough money left for any other en tree but a crap sandwich. So basically we overpaid on positions and they poorly evaluated the glaring needs in oline improvement. Seems for the price of Peppers and Manu we could have bought a pretty good oline. Peppers is good but still no pressure for some reason.
So like every year we get a flash early to make us optimistic about our sandwich selection and soon find out it still tastes the same… Like crap.

well Lovie is doing a good job running the D
should have drafted O-linemen all day on draft day (make that draft week now)
and picked up a #1 WR while so many were changing teams.
as bad as that game was we were one challenge flag away from winning it.

The NFC is not very good
We are in a playoff spot now! I really hope Cutler (who was the one responsible for this loss) gets his act together. The line settled down, the Defense was dominant, they were getting good field position (Shanahan is really scared of Hester), the running game was not too bad, but turnoveritis got us.
your right he should have been throwing to Bennett instead of Knox
Bennett reads the D and helps his QB out, Knox and Hester expect Jay to do everything for them, WR’s have reads and adjustment to make also. Jay needs a go to guy and Bennett seems to be the only one applying for the job.

The line actually looked “good” in the 2nd half. Cutler got a bit too comfy behind them though..not sure why we didn’t just try to run it again..or on that 1 yard fumble, we could’ve just tossed it outside to taylor or forte and probably scored.
